I was not a gunship guy, but many of my friends were (we are all retired now). When I was the AFSOC Liaison Officer to the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center & School (SWCS) I gave the AFSOC briefing to the SF qualification course and acted as the "aircrew" during the isolation/planning phase of training. As I told them years ago - The first and most important thing the gunship wants to know is where you are. There are numerous ways to do that, but let's just assume you have gotten that done. They know where you are. The second thing is the gunship sensor operators (two of them, one fire control officer, and a navigator) want to find you on their sensors. Once they have done that... the third thing... they want to know the targets in reference to your position (clock position and distance) - no ten digit grid coordinates. Years ago we had AC-130A aircraft in the reserves and AC-130H aircraft active duty at Hurlburt. I acted as a controller during an exercise and rode in the sensor booth for four sorties (about 20 hours total). It may have changed a bit and the sensors are much better, but I would be willing to bet that no Aircraft Commander (he is the one who pulls the trigger) is going to fire onto coordinates. So, the sensor operators work something like this - One sensor operator keeps his sensor (he can switch between several) on you. What I saw was the good guys said the target is at 2 o'clock for about 100 meters, on the far side of the road. The second sensor operator who go to the good guy position, follow the road and get to the 2 o'clock position and find the target. In the compound clearing process from your videos, it gets more simple because once the gunship is on target, it is game on, BUT they still want to know where the good guys are. In your video the rotating gun that you see from inside is more than likely the 30mm on a AC-130J. To the best of my knowledge the 105 and 40mm configuration on the J is the same as the H - 105 howitzer sticking out the left paratroop door. Does not use a standard 105 round... uses a crimped round so the projectile won't fall out before firing (what I was told). Just forward of that is the 40 mm bofors canon, fed with four or five round clips. I was a C-130 and MC-130 guy, but, as I said many of my buddies were gunship guys. I didn't see any gunship guys commenting, so I figured I would help. Great videos. Keep up the good work.
Bored not, ambitious... we Spain were the naval and army force nº1 at some point but decadence bring down empires :/ Now you are lucky because the firepower has become so big that no first world country want a war that can touch their land
As an american i'm always concerned at just how much money we throw at our military, we have 50 of these, and over 5000 other aircraft capable of various levels of destruction. We also built 10 floating cities to launch these things all over the world.
@Asterius I may be wrong, but I heard the A-10 was created because the military developed the 30mm Gatling gun and needed a vehicle to mount it to. In other words, they created a huge gun then proceeded to add wings to it.
@@suckaduck42o7 I wasn't talking about the AC-130, I was talking about the A-10 because a previous comment says the US find a way to put big guns on things while the cannon on the A-10 was built and the plane was designed around it. So kind of the opposite.
Let be honest tho if you could call in an ac-130 with a-10 warthogs and some f-12s for dog fighting you'd control the battlefield. Combine that with an amazingly trained infantry with abram tanks you got one of the deadliest forces around.
Well his countries military is very small, and doesn't have the technology we have. Estonia is the size of New York State.....and has the population of Rhode Island. We have more people in the military than there are in Estonia. Its cool to see his review machines and tech he is not familiar with.
The U.S. army has infrared "friend or foe" tags on their uniforms. When an AC 130 is inbound, the soldiers fold back the Velcro straps that are covering thes infrared tags. That is how an AC 130 pilot knows who is friendly and who is not.
Puff the Magic Dragon: The AC-47 "Spooky" Gunship Military version of the DC-3. First flew in 1935, in the military was called the C47, it was used as a gunship in Vietnam. There are still many DC-3s still flying and used commercially in Alaska.
The DC-3 holds a special place in my heart, the first aircraft I was able to fly after basic ground school for a private pilot's license. After my husband and a bunch of crazy skydivers jumped out, the co-pilot gave me his seat and I flew it back to the drop zone. What a treat!
During the Tet offensive our city had Puff missions on it. Only mini-guns back then, and was a monster. One enemy soldier in town fired at it as it circled. We saw his tracers climb up in the direction of the aircraft. I guarantee he missed. ( Having been in a helicopter receiving ground fire, they weren't often compensating for the aircraft speed and the bullets time in traveling. So a lot of their tracers seemed to curve away from us to where we had been when they fired. They didn't lead the target. Or compensate for drop. ) Puff returned fire with a 10 second burst. We considered that soldier's action as suicide. Side note: It was interesting to hear the change in noise when the mini-gun was firing in our general direction. Away from us it was a groan. At us was a crackling of the bullets with the groan softer in the background.
A MESSAGE FROM A U.S. VETERAN, I SALUTE 🫡 YOU ON YOUR SERVICE TO YOUR COUNTRY!!! I have been watching you and am very impressed by your conflict assessments and knowledge about these battles! Actually, the plane developed out of the Vietnam war. The original plane was a smaller AC-47 with mini-guns (7.62 mm ). It was developed because the plane could loiter longer at night and provide firepower for Special Forces camps against infantry attacks. Later, someone got the idea to attack trucks along the Ho Chi Minh trail, which the main targets were trucks. This required larger guns. In addition, they fought with the anti-aircraft batteries along the Trail. Eventually, the North Vietnamese deployed surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) making it too dangerous for the AC-130s. The U. S. Air Force realized the airplane was still useful in other combat situations and kept it and updated it.
LOL - let's not get crazy. The Rooskies have some humdinger firepower too. Their class of naval ships with every naval weapon they can muster onboard...sheez. Think they can only afford to sail one at a time. But still.

@SD - 05FS - Credit Valley PS (1653) I can confirm it is a motto of the AC-130 teams, I believe it even appears on the modern day patch of the 8th ASOS. I think. It's been a while.
The AC-130 is an airborne artillery platform is what they call it. It acts as air support, so when troops on the ground mark a position, the AC130 lights it up. So you have an air strike on command for an extended period. Instead of having to wait for individual planes to refuel and return, the AC 130 can hit all kinds of targets for a long period. Its genius frankly, but only works once we have air superiority, or it could be shot down.
I like how the air force got a bunch of leftover tank canons and thought “ we can mount this on a fucking transport plane” and it actually fucking happened.

I spent 20 years in the US Air Force and my first assignment was working on C-130s and occasionally I worked on AC-130s. They are incredible war machines. There is a fire control officer in the cargo compartment of the plane that operates the guns, not the pilot of copilot.

The inspiration for the AC-130 must have been the Douglas AC-47 Spooky (also nicknamed "Puff, the Magic Dragon"), back during the Viet Nam war. A Puff could in one ten-second burst put a 7.62 mm round into every square yard [meter] in an area the size of a football pitch. Anti-infantry close air support weapon.
When I was in the U.S. Army, we were given IR strobes so during times like these, you can usually track where your guys are generally at night. Training we never used them, and some of us would wear then in Afghanistan.

When Russia found out that the US had in fact microphoned the Earths oceans and with this they were able to know where every single Russian sub was at all times, and not only know it was a Russian sub, but which one, and have a full dossier on its Captain. A KGB agent said to the effect, 'We were never impressed with what the US did, we were impressed that they thought to do it".
@Crimson Shooter of Abrams Yep, just like how the US respects quite a few of Russia's military aspects (mainly the Su-27 and Mig-29, though the Mig-21 still holds a special place in my heart)
US uniforms have IR tags that flash on the cameras when moving, usually when seeing heat signitures US troups will blink as the Tags reflect to the camera allowing to know freindly from non friendly. On the soldiers the IR tag is under a strap on thr sholders and on the helmet.
I wanna say the movie Black Hawk Down showed that. It's at the part where it's night time and the solider has to throw a ir flare to tag the enemies pretty sure it cuts to the heli and you can see the soldier "blinking" could be wrong tho.
@@CYWNightmare The black IR tabs on our uniforms will look like a white luminous dot but the flashing is usually from something like an IR strobe light that some attach to their uniforms.
the enemy can copy those IR tags too, so it's not a fool proof tactic. that's why coms and coordinates are important before give the permission to fire.
@@esteban20969564 and they started to have to do that too. There's instances of the Taliban using it to fool coalition forces that are conducting strikes that are near friendly forces. We need better IR training and discipline now that even our poorest enemies have access to the same IR technology

The thing that wraps around a tank's wheels in English is called the tracks. The word does double duty as they leave imprints on the ground also called tracks. The individual elements in a tank track are called the links (also treads or track plates).
Wrong! They are the same weapons systems on the same aircraft. Puff the Magic Dragon is the original nickname given it during Vietnam. The official name is 130H Spectre. Smoke is used to identify friendlies. The friendly unit pops a colored smoke grenade. We (I'm an Air Force Veteran) have a variety of planes for specialized missions. We really do try to not kill civilians, sometimes too much, but it's what we do. The A-10 is a great plane against tanks, especially either a tank battle or a column of tanks. The central gun on the A-10 can kill a tank. So a column of tanks, under that one gun, and you destroy a lot of tanks very quickly. But if you have large number of soldiers on the ground, the AC-130 allows a lot of options for ground support missions. The guns are controlled by the gunners on the plane. And then we have helicopter gun ships which are usually flow by Marine pilots. The battlefield usually specifies which plane will be used. And sometimes you're just use what's available at the time.
Part of what made the A-10 great against tanks was the depleted Uranium ammunition we used to fire from it. A hole on the outside of the tank, a fireball inside the tank.
Holy crap! Now that you said that all I can see is Chris Evans bahahaha! We need to make him a shield but the front would be this 🇪🇪 would it still be a circle though 🤔

Welcome to the United States military my dude

@Asterius I may be wrong, but I heard the A-10 was created because the military developed the 30mm Gatling gun and needed a vehicle to mount it to. In other words, they created a huge gun then proceeded to add wings to it.

@@suckaduck42o7 I wasn't talking about the AC-130, I was talking about the A-10 because a previous comment says the US find a way to put big guns on things while the cannon on the A-10 was built and the plane was designed around it. So kind of the opposite.

Puff the Magic Dragon: The AC-47 "Spooky" Gunship Military version of the DC-3. First flew in 1935, in the military was called the C47, it was used as a gunship in Vietnam. There are still many DC-3s still flying and used commercially in Alaska.
Also, in the Pacific the USAAF mounted a 75mm gun in the nose of B25 bombers.
Sorry during World War 2.
Some countries in South America are still using them
The DC-3 holds a special place in my heart, the first aircraft I was able to fly after basic ground school for a private pilot's license.
"Who thinks of that? Who puts a gun that size on an airplane?!"
'Merica. That's who.
Why did we put guns that large on the airplane? Because we couldn't fit a larger one.
@@lexwaldez damn right
Started in WW2 with B-25's and such planes loaded lots of .50 machine guns, found out it worked well, then in Vietnam war we tried it with C-10s
Hell, we got a monster truck on that sucka too. If we can't shoot 'em we run 'em over.

D King - helicopter gunships are usually Army.

Didnt some mad lad put a 105 on the stryker too
Honestly the Zumwalt isn't worth the review yet since the railgun project got mothballed.
Yeah, when you need a nuclear reactor just to power and fire it, (at sea) you might want to just move away from projectile weapons.
Ever seen a M58 Miclic?
Cool, this is a good list. Maybe video ideas.
They actually did start out this type of aircraft with smaller planes and guns, but they shifted to larger planes mostly for longer time to stay on station and hold more ammo, which also allowed for bigger guns.
The SR-71 is also a really cool aircraft if you want to do a video on that in the future. Cool videos by the way keep up the work, I really enjoy the vids!
That would be awesome
Yes except the SR-71 was a pure surveillance aircraft, while it was flown by the USAF, its missions were mostly controlled by the CIA.
@@Hellfire918 still I argue the most beautiful plane ever designed.
IIRC the SR-71 Was used somewhat offensively in Vietnam using the sonic boom as both a method of fear as well as communicating with POWs.
If you do make comments to the SR-71, you may want to clarify that it was designed with slide rulers and brains, not computers.
"If the Taliban is shooting from the building, you just shoot the 105 at the building, yes? Two shots, and there is no more building"
> That's the plan.
At that point the building might as well not be there
Depends on tactical data, but if the building isn't protected under whatever guidelines and is being used for terrorist activities, and there's no expectation for casualties that's generally the rule. Building can be sacrificed.
If it's worth killin, it's worth killin twice.
It's worth noting the 105 can shoot both HE and AP rounds. So it can be used to kill both tanks and buildings.
Estonians seem very kind and humble, thanks for the video bro, got yourself a new sub!
😂😂😂😂. I just came across this old video. Artur the Twinkie junkie. Great to see your show is still going on after all these years.
"who thinks of these things"
americans. they see anything and there first thought is...
how big of a gun can we put on it and how many?
The truest thing ever said
As an American I can confirm this. 100%
Can confirm from Minnesota.
Can confirm and im only 17, thus saying it's basic knowledge that we americans love big guns :)
13 y/o Arkansan here and I could not agree more, we got a jeep and my first thought was “It would be cool to mount a gun on top”
