My dad didn't fly an ac130, but he flew the regular c130 over Afghanistan, he deployed troops there, got shot at, and dropped off tanks and supplies. He told me about how he would bring in new troops who were excited and ready, and when he picked up some troops from Afghanistan, he would see how their expressions had changed from excited to borderline scarred for life. Whatever is going on there is horrible, and I give every ounce of respect to those who fought there.

It started in Vietnam with an old C-47 (DC-3), with a mini gun. It was called "Puff the Magic Dragon". Later "Spooky"
They upgraded to an old C-130 cargo plane. It worked pretty damn good. Nothing succeeds like excess. A few generations later it became the AC-130 "Specter".
It does require air superiority in the area.
Clearly! It would be a sitting duck to a mid fighter or any decent anti-air battery!
But watching it in action feels like watching a car crash or some incomprehensible depraved art, it feels a little wrong and yet you can't look away and can't help but admire it...
On the roof of the German Technics Museum in Berlin (Deutches Technic Museum) there's a C-47 visible from the streets around. I went to Berlin last fall and it was an amazing experience to go around and see all the WW2 birds...

I was not a gunship guy, but many of my friends were (we are all retired now). When I was the AFSOC Liaison Officer to the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center & School (SWCS) I gave the AFSOC briefing to the SF qualification course and acted as the "aircrew" during the isolation/planning phase of training. As I told them years ago - The first and most important thing the gunship wants to know is where you are. There are numerous ways to do that, but let's just assume you have gotten that done. They know where you are. The second thing is the gunship sensor operators (two of them, one fire control officer, and a navigator) want to find you on their sensors. Once they have done that... the third thing... they want to know the targets in reference to your position (clock position and distance) - no ten digit grid coordinates. Years ago we had AC-130A aircraft in the reserves and AC-130H aircraft active duty at Hurlburt. I acted as a controller during an exercise and rode in the sensor booth for four sorties (about 20 hours total). It may have changed a bit and the sensors are much better, but I would be willing to bet that no Aircraft Commander (he is the one who pulls the trigger) is going to fire onto coordinates. So, the sensor operators work something like this - One sensor operator keeps his sensor (he can switch between several) on you. What I saw was the good guys said the target is at 2 o'clock for about 100 meters, on the far side of the road. The second sensor operator who go to the good guy position, follow the road and get to the 2 o'clock position and find the target. In the compound clearing process from your videos, it gets more simple because once the gunship is on target, it is game on, BUT they still want to know where the good guys are. In your video the rotating gun that you see from inside is more than likely the 30mm on a AC-130J. To the best of my knowledge the 105 and 40mm configuration on the J is the same as the H - 105 howitzer sticking out the left paratroop door. Does not use a standard 105 round... uses a crimped round so the projectile won't fall out before firing (what I was told). Just forward of that is the 40 mm bofors canon, fed with four or five round clips. I was a C-130 and MC-130 guy, but, as I said many of my buddies were gunship guys. I didn't see any gunship guys commenting, so I figured I would help. Great videos. Keep up the good work.
It’s nice to be appreciated, and to be reminded that the mere existence of these weapons keeps our allies safe and free. It’s well worth the expense.

I spent 20 years in the US Air Force and my first assignment was working on C-130s and occasionally I worked on AC-130s. They are incredible war machines. There is a fire control officer in the cargo compartment of the plane that operates the guns, not the pilot of copilot.
As per your question on how the crew on the AC 130 are able to differentiate friendly vs foe… the Americans on the ground do have communication links to the gunship overhead, but we also have strobes on all friendlies working with ground troops. The interesting thing about the strobes is you can’t see them with your naked eye but it is visible via night vision and other technologies. Very very cool!

Known as "Puff the Magic Dragon"
The HC-130 was first used In 1960's Vietnam, they were called "Spooky" or "Puff The Magic Dragon". As a Veteran of that conflict, I can personally say this plane saved hundreds of thousands of our troops. Their operations included suppression of VC & NVA attacking many of the Firebases. Additionally, they worked the Ho Chi Min Trail where the NVA brought troops and equipment from North Vietnam into South Vietnam. With their capability of finding the enemy through their IR cameras, working over the Trail was Death from above to the trucks loaded with supplies, tanks, artillery, and troops. Many were lost due to AA & missiles, but they were a unsung hero in my war.

Thanks Artur. Your perspectives are always interesting and fun. You speak great English too.
It was developed in Vietnam as "Spooky" with smaller guns at first to suppress NVA and Viet Cong troops hidden in the jungle. It was first mounted on a C-40 WWII airframe. It proved so useful that the platform was moved to the much larger C-130, called the AC-130. The system was improved and incorporated into battle tactical plans. Very effective enemy suppression in rough terrain as well as jungle.

The AC-130 is an airborne artillery platform is what they call it. It acts as air support, so when troops on the ground mark a position, the AC130 lights it up. So you have an air strike on command for an extended period. Instead of having to wait for individual planes to refuel and return, the AC 130 can hit all kinds of targets for a long period. Its genius frankly, but only works once we have air superiority, or it could be shot down.
"Who thinks of that? Who puts a gun that size on an airplane?!"
'Merica. That's who.
Why did we put guns that large on the airplane? Because we couldn't fit a larger one.
@@lexwaldez damn right

Hell, we got a monster truck on that sucka too. If we can't shoot 'em we run 'em over.
Actually, the plane developed out of the Vietnam war. The original plane was a smaller AC-47 with mini-guns (7.62 mm ). It was developed because the plane could loiter longer at night and provide firepower for Special Forces camps against infantry attacks. Later, someone got the idea to attack trucks along the Ho Chi Minh trail, which the main targets were trucks. This required larger guns. In addition, they fought with the anti-aircraft batteries along the Trail. Eventually, the North Vietnamese deployed surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) making it too dangerous for the AC-130s. The U. S. Air Force realized the airplane was still useful in other combat situations and kept it and updated it.

A similar weapon was used in Viet Nam for the first time. They were used in heavily wooded area where the cong were hiding and targeting our troops. It was called "Puff". It would circle until it was called off by the infantry. It was said it laid a bullet down every square inch into the enemy. They hated it and usually would leave the second it was started firing. The jungle would be laid to waste, like a giant chain saw went through the area.
Puff the Magic Dragon: The AC-47 "Spooky" Gunship Military version of the DC-3. First flew in 1935, in the military was called the C47, it was used as a gunship in Vietnam. There are still many DC-3s still flying and used commercially in Alaska.
Also, in the Pacific the USAAF mounted a 75mm gun in the nose of B25 bombers.
Sorry during World War 2.
Some countries in South America are still using them
The DC-3 holds a special place in my heart, the first aircraft I was able to fly after basic ground school for a private pilot's license. After my husband and a bunch of crazy skydivers jumped out, the co-pilot gave me his seat and I flew it back to the drop zone. What a treat!
During the Tet offensive our city had Puff missions on it. Only mini-guns back then, and was a monster. One enemy soldier in town fired at it as it circled. We saw his tracers climb up in the direction of the aircraft. I guarantee he missed. ( Having been in a helicopter receiving ground fire, they weren't often compensating for the aircraft speed and the bullets time in traveling. So a lot of their tracers seemed to curve away from us to where we had been when they fired. They didn't lead the target. Or compensate for drop. ) Puff returned fire with a 10 second burst. We considered that soldier's action as suicide.
Side note: It was interesting to hear the change in noise when the mini-gun was firing in our general direction. Away from us it was a groan. At us was a crackling of the bullets with the groan softer in the background.

Engineer: "RIGHT??"
People: you can’t just kill individual people with those giant guns
USA: hehe big gun go brrrrrr
hahaaa xD
that is funny!
LMAO right 😂😂
drill go brrrr
LMFAO
USA: you're right... we need a bigger gun
Engineer: “Hey, whats that cargo plane for?”
Soldier: “Cargo...”
Engineer: “...”
Soldier: “...”
Engineer: “Get some big pipes, Im going to put some more cargo on this puppy”
This went from a big softie like a golden retriever to a very aggressive Pitbull
(I know pit bulls aren’t actually naturally aggressive, so please don’t call me out for it)
America in a nutshell 😂😂
FoxGaming76 YT Ironically makes for a great comparison.
The US did a bunch of screwed up things to their beautiful cargo aircraft now it’s blowing up everything it sees.
I' from WI. USA. I know nothing about weapons but am fascinated by your videos. Keep up the good work, I may learn something about weapons etc. and understand the fascination with these weapons - other than the fact they kill.
I really like your channel. Very clear to understand.
I love this dude, he’s so positive and seems very dedicated to his fans and vice versa
Artur: “What do they use the AC-130 against?” The USA: “Yes.”
I mean, if you get a firing solution on something then yeh, you can take out anything you need to
What. Would you say if i told you a man got 500 kills in 100 days without using a sniper scope in ww2?
You ask who thinks of this the us the us in the 50’s and 60’s mounted fucking nukes to recoiled rifles and put it on the back of a jeep
The mini gun makes a distinct sound often called "the fart of the gods"
BomberBoi Ahhh the Davey Crockett! The inspiration for Fallout’s Fat Man!
Artur
in 1969 I was in the USMC at Phu Bai VN in what we called I Corp. I was on the line when the NVA tried to overrun us. We called in a gunship to help out and two showed up. When those planes roll over on their side and light up all three guns. It is amazing, sounds like a fog horn about 50 feet away, you can see the tracers below the plane sweeping back and forth. It was said the plane could put a round in every square inch of a football pitch (US or World Soccer) on a single pass. I do not know if the rounds were 7.62 or 50 cal, it wouldn't have mattered, they didn't stand a chance.
Fun fact: The AC-130 is known for killing its crew as the atmosphere inside the plane can be extremely hazardous
When you are under fire from a AC-130: "Don't bother running, you'll just die tired."
when a AC-130 sets up on u... its a wrap... no where to go but to the afterlife
Might as well make ur peace.
Instead they run into a "mosque" setup as an armory, which we are not allowed to engage since it's a religious place.
18:37 AC-130 Motto: "You can run...but you will just die tired."
I knew i was going to find this comment
No thats a Reaper motto
Now, that’s for Apaches
The aiming and firing is performed from the cockpit. The crew in the back keep them loaded and running. The cockpit has TV based gunnery controls.
Thanks for your work, I watch you from Seattle, 🇺🇸
“Who makes up these weapons on planes”
Welcome to the United States military my dude
I mean the us military budget is 700 billion so pretty much shit like this get accomplished with that big of a budget
@Asterius I may be wrong, but I heard the A-10 was created because the military developed the 30mm Gatling gun and needed a vehicle to mount it to. In other words, they created a huge gun then proceeded to add wings to it.
Jason it used to be a cargo plane same with the 130 but they needed more firepower so they put big guns in big planes and do big shit 😂
@@suckaduck42o7 I wasn't talking about the AC-130, I was talking about the A-10 because a previous comment says the US find a way to put big guns on things while the cannon on the A-10 was built and the plane was designed around it. So kind of the opposite.
@@jay_mw thats how guns tend to be designed too. You make a bullet, and then design the magazine to carry it and a gun to fire it.
"Pilot see that building?"
"Yes sir."
"I dont want to."
"Yes sir."

nice stolen comment buddy
There are different versions of the AC 130. As years go by we have changed what weapons on the Aircraft. Also there have been improvement to the sensors on the aircraft.
It's interesting you described it as magic. One of its predecessors, the AC-47, was nicknamed Puff the Magic Dragon, after a song. Regarding who thought up this concept, the AC-130 is the culmination of ideas of a flying gunship, starting with the AC-47, then the AC-119, which were all invented and served in the Vietnam War. The US Army also tested an ACH-47 helicopter gunship during Vietnam. The fixed-wing gunships were operated by the US Air Force air commandos, now known as AF Special Operations. The AC-130 is more powerful than the A-10, in a way, but they have different missions, and the AC-130 is comparatively much less survivable. Six were lost in Vietnam to enemy fire, and one in the Gulf War in 1991. Both are beloved by soldiers and marines in combat. The first gunships only had 7.62 miniguns, and gradually more and bigger guns were added. The 25mm guns do have high explosive incendiary (HEI) rounds. The AC-130 has evolved considerably itself; the latest version is the AC-130J, based on the latest C-130 platform, and updated weapons, including wing-mounted bombs and missiles! It was also one of the first aircraft to use high-tech sensors like infrared (IR) and precision guidance. One interesting sensor from all the way back in Vietnam could detect the firing of spark plugs, since the Ho Chi Minh trail used to infiltrate weapons from North Vietnam to South Vietnam was covered by dense jungle, enemy convoys were difficult to find.
“Who thinks of these ideas?” American kids 10-12 years old. Why? Because it’s cool!
Motto of AC-130 crews: Why run? You’ll just die tired! 🤣🤣
@SD - 05FS - Credit Valley PS (1653) It's a military quote I've heard also referenced to hellfire missiles.
Is that real??? a child thought the idea of gunship??
@@user-mz2kr4eh7r No but it's a simple strategy to put hella guns on a gunship. They coulda engineered somethin cooler but they wanted max amount of fire power, not just like 1 or 2 cool unique guns.
@SD - 05FS - Credit Valley PS (1653) it's a Sniper quote
@SD - 05FS - Credit Valley PS (1653) I can confirm it is a motto of the AC-130 teams, I believe it even appears on the modern day patch of the 8th ASOS. I think. It's been a while.
“Who’s the guy who thinks of this?”
It’s pretty much the American creed my friend.
More guns > less guns lol.
MURICA!!! Thats who
LOL - let's not get crazy. The Rooskies have some humdinger firepower too. Their class of naval ships with every naval weapon they can muster onboard...sheez. Think they can only afford to sail one at a time. But still.
Amen
Pretty sure the thought process went something like this.
"What if a tank could fly?"
Government: "Shut up and take my money."
Man I miss these videos. Back in the day when I wanted a mug. Your doing the lord's work now Artur. Godspeed!
