MANA is not a short word for mananaggal. Its a dramatic twist of wordplay, Pablo transforms "MANA" from a mere abbreviation for "manananggal" into a profound concept. Rather than a literal reference to the mythical creature, "MANA" which means inheritance and receiving blessings. Pablo adds an extraordinary layer to the song "MANA" by connecting it to the mythical creature "MANANANGGAL." This symbolism reflects their commitment to staying grounded despite their rise to popularity, akin to the creature's lower body. They share this groundedness as an inheritance with their fans, fostering a powerful and lasting connection. The upper body of the manananggal symbolizes their prowess as "LIVE MONSTERS" in their singing, akin to being powerful and mighty, capable of conquering various stages. Yet, they remain grounded due to the lower body, signifying humility and rootedness amidst success.

Mana symbolizes SB19 remaining humble in spite of being successful. Mana is short for Manananggal, a mythical creature from the Ph, it is able to divide its body into upper & lower halves. The upper half has wings & can fly towards the sky (pertaining to their moving towards success) while the lower part remains on the ground (symbolizing humility since their feet remains on the ground). 💙

    MANA
    Ayy, Isn't this strange?
You didn't knew me when I was still on the ground
Ayy, Not even once you've asked how I was doing, I'm betting you 50
    Ayy, Now I'm up here
    I see everything's changed
    Didn't you miss me?
    Oh yeah?
Nah, I'd rather half of my body go missing
    Oh yeah!
    Why is it like this?
    I can't understand what you're saying
    Is the world really unfair?
If it is, then I'm here to change it
For me it's not a bother
If you still refuse to see
I possesses gifts no one can ever dispute
    Mana- nanggal
    Manananggal, mananananggal, mana
    Heaven and earth
Can unite if you just believe
Even if you haven't realized the value of these gifts I possess
    Mana-nanggal
    Manananggal, manananggal (Rrah!)
    Mana
    Mana
    Mana
    Mana
Huh? I can't hear what you're trying to say
It can't reach me from where I am now
And the airplane beside me is too loud
I'll go turbo, turning on the nitro
    Zoom to far away
    I wouldn't stop
    I be floating here
    Cause I'm grounded
    Chillin'
What you calling punks? Yeah we not dead
    Don't you have anything new?
Something I didn't know yet about myself
    You really haven't learned anything,
I think you need some sort of a miracle
For me it's not a bother
If you still refuse to see
I possesses gifts no one can ever dispute
    Mana- nanggal
    Manananggal, mananananggal, mana
    Heaven and earth
Can unite if you just believe
Even if you haven't realized the value of these gifts I possess
    Mana-nanggal
    Manananggal, manananggal (Rrrah!)
    Mana
    Mana
    A monster?
    Is that why you're scared?
Just shut that mouth of yours
    Don't test my patience
    Go on, go on
    Just don't you fall asleep
    A monster?
    Is that why you're scared?
Just shut that mouth of yours
    Don't test my patience
Go on, go on, just go on (OOHHH)
    Mana- nanggal

"MANANANGGAL" is a mythical creature that when it turn into one at night the upper body cuts in half from waist ang it has wings and can flew away leaving its lower body on the ground. Its was a methapor that when SB19 is being famous and soar up high like the upper body of manananggal they will stay humble and its feet will still on the ground like the lower body of manananggal.

MANA simply talks about power and integrity. Double meaning Mana is a supernatural force or power that may be ascribed to persons, spirits, or inanimate objects. Mana (short for Manananggal) is a mythical creature who cuts body into half and back again. The upper part refers to the clouds. The bottom part refers to the soil. And when they attach there goes integrity (which means the state of being whole and undivided)

it depends on how we use or what's the context MANA could mean a gift or an inheritance. MANANANGGAL is a mythical creature that can separate the upper half of its body and fly from dusk to dawn and haunt, prey on fully pregnant women who are asleep so they can extend their mile-long tongue to their belly and suck out the blood of both the mother & baby these 2 are their fave to prey on but they do haunt whoever is unaware, alone & asleep! While they conceal the lower half of their body (below waist which naturally has both of its feet on the ground) from the public eye. Another characteristic of the manananggal as what our old people describes, they don't prey on the area where they live, they will travel another barrio or small town or city to hunt for their meal.
To Visayan/Cebuano speakers MANANANGGAL has another meaning too! From the root word TANGGAL (remove) Manananggal refers to the person who does/acts the removing of something. Like how you use the word DRIVE to DRIVER or MINE to MINERS.
So how Pablo uses the word manananggal & its characteristics is such a genius idea. As someone who follows them since their GO UP time I could say SB19 is manananggal the good way! They are monsters on stages no matter how small or big, they are master performers they don't half-ass no matter how huge their name became, they are grounded and always look back how & who they are before fame. They don't prey on their own kind to make or keep themselves great compared to the others. They keep themselves low key & humble so as not to alienate those who are new in the industry, they accommodate & encourages them.

You did see the word "manananggal" flashed on the screen several times. "Mana" ( inheritance) is short for "manananggal" (the mythecal creature that seperates its upper half of its body to fly away to hunt). They chose this creature to describe themselves that while they fly high in their career, they keep their feet on the ground or stay humble. "Mana" is written like "What?"

ANDRES BONIFACIO is considered to be among the Philippines' heroes, as googled: Andres Bonifacio is regarded as the Father of the Philippine Revolution against Spain. He also is known as the Father of the Katipunan, a secret revolutionary society he founded in 1892 and whose goal was to win Philippine independence from Spain by means of a revolution. He was arrested and ordered to be executed by Emilio Aguinaldo, the first Philippine President, when Bonifacio challenged Aguinaldo's ascension to power. Now back to the song 😂 Pablo, or whoever helped him with this song smartly incorporated the sinister laughter in horror movies along with the interlude of sounds often used in old horror (cartoon) movies (hope i got my message through, am not really good at explaining things 😂)

  • @quixxxilver
    @quixxxilver 2 месяца назад +15

Hey, fellas! Some context for you: (Unfortunately, the lyrics translation you used wasn't very good, with several glaring mistakes and poor word choices. For example, it translated "manananggal" as "remove", which is totally wrong.)
In the song, MANA is short for *MANANANGGAL*, which is a kind of supernatural being from Filipino folklore. It looks like an ordinary human by day, but at night turns into its monstrous form: it splits its body at the waist while the upper half gains wings and flies off in search of prey. (Maybe No Drink and reMARKable know the word "tanggal", which means "detach"; "manananggal" literally translates to "someone that detaches".) The song also mentions -- in that chanted part led by Ken that y'all liked -- ASWANG, which is another kind of horrific supernatural creature. Ken chants "ASWANG ba, kaya kinakatakutan?" which translates to "Are we ASWANG, is that why you fear us?" Their costumes represent the manananggal/aswang -- not ravens or crows, really. Recommend you look for a picture of the manananggal! It's really freaky and unique-looking monster.
What's unusual -- and brilliant -- is that Pablo embraces this imagery of the manananggal and aswang as "monsters" and applies it to SB19. His lyrics go "I'd rather half my body go missing." He then turns being like a manananggal into a positive: someone who uses their super-human abilities to fly and soar to heights of success while keeping their feet on the ground. The chorus goes "MANANANGGAL... Langit, lupa, magsasama.... 'di man kita tunay na halaga ng aking biyaya." ("MANANANGGAL... Sky and earth unified... even if you don't see the true worth of my gifts." BIYAYA was translated as "grace" in the translation you used, but a better translation is "blessing" or "gift".)
Before MANA, I'd never encountered a positive take on the manananggal. But, come to think of it, nowadays saying someone is a "beast" or is "terrific" (which originally meant something terrifying/terror-inducing) is saying they have an impressive, "unnatural" level of skill. And SB19 are 100% BEASTS at all they do. So in MANA, they fully own and celebrate being beasts. That's why the music has a sinister sound, with a sort of evil clown/carnival vibe and that evil-sounding laughter. The monster imagery is also reflected in the choreography and the visuals. That's why in the AAA performance, the backdrop is the moon over dark woods, the dancers make grotesque faces, and everyone does the wing-flapping part of the choreo at the end.
One last clever thing (intended by Pablo) is that the title is itself the word MANA / NANGGAL split into two. As I said before TANGGAL means "detach", and if you do detach that part, you're left with MANA, which is harder to find a one-word translation for. MANA means "something passed on", usually something passed on TO YOU by your parents/predecessors. It can be used for material wealth, or hereditary traits, or skills/practices/traditions taught to you (which touches on MAPA's theme). Lastly, it can also mean "something passed on BY YOU" or what you leave behind for those that come after you. In this sense, maybe "legacy" would be a good translation.
Looking forward to your next SB19 reaction!

I think the translation you just looked up is wayyyy too literal. It's not even the translation of the meaning of the song in totality. This was like a verbatim translation that took away the real meaning of the song.
So manananggal is a mythical creature and doesn't mean "remove". Although it could mean "remover" but not in this context. The mythical creature removes half of its body so that its torso flies up to the sky while its lower body stays on the ground. It's a metaphor for humility. Their feet stay on the ground while they fly high (become successful).

You think we should have not even attempted to understand the lyrics, never pulled them up and instead just tell you how the song sounds to us being performed? Honest question. We don’t speak Tagalog to have known the translation was incorrect. We tried our best as common foreigners to understand the meaning of the song. Even though maybe we failed to do so in the video. Thanks to our comment section we got it down packed now. The mythical creature has the top body up in the sky representing their success. The bottom half is on the bottom to represent that no matter the success at the top. They remain Grounded. Which honestly is how we know them to be lol. Very humble, kind and successful young men.
