- Salmon fishing in difficult conditions on the Tweed at Upper Dryburgh. I can not thank Dryburgh ghillie Brian Douglas enough for pushing and encouraging me not to give up and continue fishing.
The rain was heavy, the water coloring and rising and ready to pack up when I took his advice and fished the Boat Pool. I'm not one to continue in harsh conditions if I'm honest and it took a lot for me to pick up my rod and tackle the Boat Pool. I'm glad I did. I learned a lot on this day both about salmon fishing in difficult conditions and a renewed willingness to push myself further.
Walking from the upstream Bridge Pool, I had time to think about my tactics for these conditions. I opted for an Intermediate line and long tailed sunray, cast slightly upstream on a long cast with a fast strip across the pool. My thinking was the floating debris was not yet saturated and still mainly on the surface as opposed to suspended in the flow; the intermediate line would pull the fly down and under the debris. It worked and didn't take me long to get into a fish of about 9lb. A decent fish made very special in the conditions I faced.

Great video and example of perseverance and also success by adapting to conditions presented. Thank you.
It took a lot to push myself in those seemingly impossible conditions. A memorable fish for all the right reasons!
against all odds, you found, fought, and landed a salmon. hat off to you for not giving up. What most people don't understand is that at least 50% of the success in Salmon fishing is a mental game. If you are not mentally prepared most simply give up. This is a nice, short inspiring video. Thank you for sharing.
That is 100% true. I learned a lot about salmon fishing this day - I also learned a lot about myself! I was so close to giving up but the Ghillie pushed me on !!
Great fishing, even better photography! Tight Lines Sir!
Thanks for watching - tough day but glad I stuck it out!
Another great video 👊👏
Thanks again!
Perseverance paid off in the end, well done 👏🎣😄👍👍
It did - To be honest - I was ready to pack up, so the reward for perseverance goes to the ghillie for not having that and pushing me down to the Boat Pool - I learned a lot on this trip though - I will definitely be thinking more about changing tactics in adverse conditions rather than just packing up when it gets to tough :) ......... snowflake that I am :)
Great video. I’d say your talents are well beyond the average RUclipsr
Wow, thanks! I really appreciate your kind words!
Very nice video . This river looks amazing .
It really is! Fantastic river the Tweed!
Amazing video. Beautiful river. Would love to fish that water myself. 👍👍
The Tweed is one of my favorites! Very famous Scottish salmon river! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love spey fishing and I wonder who is more dramatic - steel headers or Atlantic salmon anglers 😂
Ah an age old question! I have an equal love for both!!!!
Superb !! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks a lot 😊
Nice
Thanks
Paul, one must always fish the fly...you don't catch salmon if the fly is on the rod! Brian was right, You have to try...and as you have so eloquently shown, succeeded with the elements against you but using tactics to promote a strike! It does not get any better than that, my friend! Now time to buy Brian a pint...Mike.
Old Japanese proverb "Must have fly in water to catch fish" definitely worked true here. I really enjoyed this fish for the reasons you have mentioned. I learned a lot about fishing and myself this day. Yep, a pint or two coming Brian's way next I'm down on the Tweed! Take care, thanks for watching and commenting!
👍👍👍!!!
Yeah - tough conditions but triumph at the end :) Thanks for watching!
I know some people won’t like this but I caught my first salmon in about 1990 and I am amazed anyone wants to go today, not only due to the death of fish but do you really want to hassle a fish that’s that endangered. Put away your rod and go trout fishing . The fish must come first. Incidentally I don’t rate the beat I have fished it.
Each to their opinions!
official Croc . . .
Yeah definitely! Was more the manner I caught it than the fish. But that's salmon fishing at that time of the year!
Great video, what line are you using there?
Hi. Thanks for watch. It's a Rio Skagit 600gr short head with a 15ft Rio Versi-tip intermediate then a Rio 6ft Versi-leader. Hope that helps. It's my go to set for fishing a sunray.
