Replacing a Hymer / Fiat Ducato Heater Resistor

  • 2008 Hymer B544 based on a Fiat Ducato chassis.
Heater and Air Con only work on max speed setting (4) all other speeds are dead 1,2 & 3.
Usual cause is a burned out resistor but they are hard to find if you don't know where to look.
If you do know where to look then it's a 5 minute job.
It took me lots of digging to find out how to do it so I hope this short video helps the next person.
Really all you need is a 5.5mm Hex socket (or small wrench/spanner) and the replacement part (About £10 , $12 on Ebay).
I reckon this could save you a bit of money, time and energy rather than taking it into a workshop.

Many thanks for taking the time to post this. I had this on a VW T5 so as soon as I only had one speed on my Ducato I knew what the problem was, but not where it was! Thank again

The reason for this resistor failing might be that the bearing on the fan is sticky. Then the fan will not speed up and the temp fuse on top of the resistor blows. Some correct oil on the bearing end a new fuse and the fault is history. (this video is one of the best instructions I've seen for ages!)

The bit that I needed was your instruction to slide our the resistor. Easy when you know how but impossible if you don't.

Thanks for this video mate, finally got round to checking mine in my Peugeot Boxer, as it would only work at #4. Pulled it out and checked the resistor with a meter. Resistor is fine but the whole thing is corroded, so sprayed all the contacts (plug and resistor pack contacts) with electrical contact spray, and plugged it all back in, and it's working again. I've also got a new one on order :) and will swap it out as soon as it arrives... happy days.

i have a non working fan motor - been like it for a year, but as i have an auxilliary diesel heater, i wasn't too bothered with it. But now we heading in to colder weather, i feel it incumbent to get the thing working - not so much for the heating in cab area, but to dlear inside of windscreen when it mists up. i ordered my resistor from Germany - it was a lot cheaper than ebay, and didn't take very long to arrive. Going to try and locate the old one today, and like your video, i also will video it if possible for future reference for other people with same vehicle as myself ( Iveco 50C13 16 seat minibus) Many thanks for your helpful video on this subject.

The problem I described is that the fan is either (1) Off on settings 1,2 &3 (2) Only works on setting 4, full speed.
The fan DID work but only on full speed.
The resistor is used to slow the fan down.
If your fan DOES NOT work then you have a different problem.

It's likely to be the actual switch (the piece behind your 1,2,3,4 position dial) that is burnt out. see at 3.00 mins at this link: ruclips.net/video/HwQECDGve4g/видео.html "Go Humberto" - I hope you don't mind me adding the link to your post. Your video has been excellent and helped me with my Citroen Relay Van , where like yours, the strongest position (position 4 on my switch) worked but 1,2 and 3 didn't because the resistor was faulty and could therefored not function to slow the fan down. Big thank you to you for your great video and contortions to explain everything in great detail :-)

I have a Citroen Relay Van 57 plate, just removed/replaced the matrix on it, ( Leaking badly, BIG job, hopefully a vid to follow on that,) but also had the same issue over and above, hoped it was just the actual switch as in 90%? of cases, so swapped that first.. (Damn.. ) anyway already received new new resistor so will get that sorted ASAP guys.. P.s, if anyone needs info on matrix removal give me a message.. you'll need 12 hours if decent DIY'er
