Hello NAVE crew, What's up? In this video we brought interesting information about Intravenous Anesthesia in Cattle (TIVA in cows). It is not very often performed in this species, but it is very good, in several aspects, especially because it avoids animal's movement, minimizing risk to the team and the patient himself.
This 150kg cow was anesthetized for an abscess removal, due to omphalophlebitis. We used xylazine (0.05 mg/kg - IM) as premedication and ketamine (2 mg/kg - IV) as anesthetic induction. Anesthesia was maintained with ketamine (2 mg/kg/hour) + xylazine (0.1 mg/kg/hour) + guaiaphenesin (EGG) (50 mg/kg/hour) - also known as “triple drip”. In addition, we performed infiltrative local anesthesia (lidocaine) in the region to be operated on. The animal was monitored by HR, RR, non-invasive BP, SpO2 and eyelid reflex.
Once it is a bit difficult to intubate a cow of this size, we decided to administer O2 (100%) intranasally, with a flow rate of 5L/min. In this video you can see that the parameters were very stable throughout the procedure. To show the efficiency of the O2 supply, we remove the cannula for a couple minutes... and you can see a fast drop in the SpO2... So, see the importance of the O2 supplementation in anesthesia!
