    I can totally relate to this. When I was in my 20's (1984) I wanted a Mark III because of Cannon reruns. I found a 1970 triple black Mark III in an Auto Trader magazine. It was local. My grandfather went with me to look at it. I asked him if he liked it. He said he did. My grandparents helped me buy it. I paid them back. Great story!

    It's wonderful to see a younger person appreciate these cars. I'm pretty much a Thunderbird guy and I seem to get more attention with the younger crowd. They just haven't made anything so plush and stylish since the 1980's, with a few exceptions from the 90's.

    Cartier Designer Series had ONLY ONE color combination each year… for the Mark V, 1977 was Dove Grey…with a single thin Dark Red paint stripe. 1978-1979 was Light Champagne, again, with a single thin paint stripe in Dark Red….that was it. Your car is the Wedgewood Blue Luxury Group. ALL Mark Vs had ‘Cartier’ signed clocks as standard equipment. Someone in the prior ownership installed that Cartier nameplate dash plaque. The exterior color looks metallic? If so, it’s not Wedgewood Blue…as that was a single-stage non-metallic color.

      I was wondering about this too.
      I'm not as familiar, but I was also under the impression that each of the specific designer editions were only in one colour 'theme', and that you didn't have a choice of interior colours or paint.
      Still, he'll learn more about it as he owns it longer and I hope his little initial mistake doesn't embarrass him :)

  • @dman19581969
    @dman19581969 Год назад +5

    This truly is a beautiful example don’t get me wrong but this guy just says whatever!! This is not a Cartier edition, not even the right color!!! It’s part of what’s called the wedgewood luxury car group, where you could pick and choose where you wanted your colors instead of getting a designer edition. You were the designer in Lincoln’s eyes and yes that’s how they advertised it. All the clocks said Cartier because of their contract with ford motor company back before they switched to quarts clocks in the 80’s. I still have my 1978 mark v, cream with wedgewood blue top/interior (wedgewood blue wasn’t only available on Cartier edition cars as stated in the video, it wasn’t even an option on Cartier cars) powered by the optional 460 with true dual exhaust and I love it. One of the previous owners of this car must’ve got that badge on the passenger side dash and put it there, you can find originals and new old stock badges on eBay. I’m willing to bet the original owners name doesn’t match that of what’s on the Cartier badge on the dash plus the opera windows would say Cartier to the right of the Lincoln symbol, which they don’t!! One last thing is that I’ve never seen any mark v (and I’ve seen a lot) with chrome window trim on the back window of a vinyl top car, Normally only vinyl deleted cars had that chrome window trim in the back or Givenchy cars because their vinyl roof was the front half and not the back half of the roof, looks like this one is aftermarket or put on afterwards at the dealer back in the day. None of the trim around the vinyl top ls like what I’ve seen before especially the trim around that rear window. Even the vinyl top itself comes up too far, it comes all the way up to the quarter windows like a mark iv, there is no gap before the quarter windows. It definitely looks installed after it ran down the production line. None the less, it’s still a beautiful car. Just hope this young man sees this comment (which he probably won’t) so he can tell the cars true story and not what he believes to be true!!

    I bought a wonderful 1978 Mark V from a friend in the 1990s. To this day, I must say it was my favorite car to drive. It felt like I was driving a cloud. Late one Saturday night, after I was deep in slumberland, I was awakened by the doorbell. It was about 2:30 am, and there was a police woman at my door. She said, “Sir, did you used to own a 1978 Lincoln Mark V?” I broke out in a sweat as she said those words, and she pointed to my car, which I had parked across the street from my house, but was now completely smashed and lying up on the sidewalk. A drunk had run the traffic light on the corner, clipped another car driving through the intersection, spun out and hit my beloved Mark V at 50 mlles an hour. Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first. 😢😢😢

    Something that comes to mind is that the Continental MKV series, Designer Edition cars or "standard", were probably the LAST American production cars that could be truly custom ordered from the factory...
    A buyer could specify ANY paint, ANY interior, any delete that struck their fancy.
    Mom n Dad had a Designer Series Mark... I think it was an Emilio Pucci Edition, that had the "reverse" vinyl half roof and they ordered it with NO opera Windows.
    The car was black and they ordered a three tone, full leather interior in mainly dove grey, with dark red insets and carpet and leather dash... All with black piping.
    SUPER SHARP and I've always wondered if that car still exists.

    Light Champagne Full Vinyl or Landau Vinyl Roof
    Light Champagne Bodyside Moldings
    Dark Red Dual Pin Stripes on Bodyside
    Cartier Logo on Rear Deck Lid
    Cartier signature in Opera Windows
    6-Way Power Passenger Seat
    Dual Beam Map/Dome Lamp
    Illuminated Visor Vanity Mirrors (both sides)
    Turbine-Style Cast Aluminum Wheels
    He claims Wedgewood Blue was only offered for the Cartier. Not true at all. The Cartier only came in Light Champagne. Some previous owner slapped that Cartier badge on the dash. The "Cartier" clock was standard in all Mark Vs but certainly did not make them a Cartier. Furthermore, this is NOT a Lincoln. It was not marketed or sold as a Lincoln. No where on the car does it have a Lincoln badge. The window sticker did not say Lincoln. The sales brochure did not say Lincoln. This is a CONTINENTAL MARK V.

(Lincoln hood ornament, Lincoln symbol on the steering wheel/opera windows and a Lincoln symbol on the truck that slides to the left to reveal the lock where you’d open the trunk. The window sticker and sales brochure don’t say Lincoln for traditional purposes.
      What you’re thinking of is the 1956-1957 continental mark II. Which was a beautiful car build with no expenses spared and yes, it wasn’t a Lincoln, it was built by the continental division :)

    • @robertkunce

      @@dman19581969 Thank you for the response. I appreciate that and will respectfully disagree with you in that the symbol you are referring to is a variation of the original continental star from the '56-'57 Mark II that you referenced. And yes, that same symbol was used on the true Lincolns such as the Continental, Continental Town Car, and Continental Town Coupe' of the 70s. These models not only have the symbol but the actual Lincoln name on the car itself.

    • @dman19581969
      @dman19581969 Год назад +1

      @@robertkunce I can respect where you are coming from because they did always call them continentals to keep the tradition going but, the continental division shut down in July of 1956 because ford lost over $1,000 on every mark II sold which is close to $12,000 in today’s money. Go watch an old advertisement from 1978, they will refer to it as a Continental throughout for traditional purposes, but at the end it says “A mark of tradition” with Lincoln-Mercury division underneath it, not Continental division because it’s a Lincoln. We can’t really debate over the symbol because you’re correct, the Lincoln symbol used back then and to this day originated from the continental division from 1954 to 1956 and was created for the mark II and a fun fact is while creating the symbol, it was originally round instead of rectangular with the crest in the middle of course but, Mercedes claimed it looked too much like theirs so they redesigned it and the redesign was hard for ford to mass produce economically in the mid 50’s so each hood ornament for a Mark II cost as much to produce as a 1957 Ford grill did. However, I still don't understand why they would not have put the name Lincoln on the car somewhere or in the brochure or on the window sticker. Also, why would they put FORD on the sill plate rather than Lincoln? This is what drives me crazy. All of this comes about for me because I bought a '79 Mark V nearly 2 years ago from the original owner. It was in storage all this time and had just 170 miles on it. It now has just under 700. @@robertkunce Thank you for your response and I’d have to agree that it’s confusing. I always wrote it off that it didn’t say Lincoln anywhere for “traditional” purposes. I also have an original mark v and it also has ford on its door sills and I’ve always questioned it as well, because I feel the door sills should say Continental if they wanted to be “traditional” but, if you look at photos of the original Continental division of ford plant, it says “ford motor company” on the plant. Lincoln’s of the late 70’s just had plain black door sills with chrome around them, they didn’t say Lincoln or ford, but it kinda makes sense for our mark Vs to say ford on the sills because agin, even the plant for the continental division said “ford motor company” on it in big letters. Now what truly makes this a Lincoln to me, is that all Mark Vs were assembled alongside the Lincoln Continentals at the now-closed Wixom Assembly Plant in Wixom, Michigan. So the same people that build our mark Vs also built continentals. To my knowledge the mark II was the only true “Continental” but who knows I suppose. What matter most is that you have a beautiful car and I’m happy you finally got one after all these years and a nice one at that from the sounds of it. My 78 mark v and my 97 mark viii are a dream to drive, the only two cars I can drive and feel better once I’ve reached my destination then before I left!!
