I Tried Loving The 2023 KTM 790 Adventure…

- The KTM 790 Adventure surprised me. In a way, it's not the best at anything. But surprisingly for a bike in this price range, it doesn't really lack anything either. And that's kind of rare.
Thanks to ATH MOTO for lending me this bike for a week!

I bought one, have almost 6000 km and love everything about it!
keep the Pirellis?
@@TheDennzio 10000km and still good
I don't get why people are worried about it being made in China. Given all the problems (mostly minor) with the original 790/890 if anything the CFMoto built bikes are going to be better than the Austrian built ones. IMO the 790 is a great bike for the price that as you mention seems to be left out of all the comparisons. it's less than a T700, and in the same range as the Honda Transalp 750, and Tuareg 660.
I agree... I think the days where Chinese-built automatically equals crap quality are behind us...
@@KRANKiT Specially with cfmoto. I think they are quality!
@@KRANKiT No they are not. China = sweat shop/slave labor produced garbage, and you know it. It's only about higher profits for that small, rootless, international clique of bankers...not the consumers...not the workers. It's wanton greed/fraud at the expense of others.
Great work as usual, thank you for being one of the few reviewers that actually pronounce Tuareg correctly, only one other I have viewed mentioning it seemed to know the backstory either.
Thanks :)
Your videos are Great !
Keep them coming !
Thank you!
You are kranking our some top quality videos! Keep it up, love it! Wish I could ride and afford one of these beauties, I'm probably more in the T7 camp but this looks awesome!
Thank you very much!
Excellent video and explanation and perspective, thank you
Cheers!
I'm at nearly 3000 miles on mine. Did have a little bit of electric trouble where the key needed a jiggle for the bike to fire up, but it's gone away again and I'm not too concerned. Beyond that, I've ridden it reasonably hard and it's still looking and feeling pretty new.
Did the seat get any comfortable after few thousand miles or still stiff and uncofortamble?
@@djessbolan I think this model has a pretty comfortable seat from the start and no major change since, even though I've heard the older models didn't really. I had a 390 and that seat was really hard in comparison.
How nice to stumble up to your channel, you make perfect reviews almost F9 level and then, when putting the video on pause to find out you were driving in Fǎget, must be Romania, the country I love. Greetings from Belgium from a new subscriber!
Thank you! Appreciate it!
Nice review and very useful information for someone looking at this bike. Thanks!
Cheers!
Thanks for putting together such a well thought out video on the 790! Think I'll go test ride one.
This might turn into a really expensive RUclips view for yourself :))
Enjoyed this video. Great job.
Thank you!
Loved the narration, videotaping etc

You have a gift. Another terrific video.

Thank you very much!
well, had one as a loaner bike while my suzuki was being serviced. 500kms on board and the quick shifter was already acting up. Between 4th and 5th gear it had a 3/5 chances of throwing a false neutral to the point I wasn't quick shifting while overtaking, couldn't handle the suspense :)
I just bought the black one. So far so good. It’s perfect for me as I’m older now so do need the better 890. I will enjoy the heck out of it. 🤞cheers
I'm looking at the 790 at the moment. It felt really fun to ride, a little less refined but it made me smile. The other bike I'm looking at is the new v stroke 800re. I'm really considering the KTM for the price.
I love my 300 Rally in the technical offroad riding, but sometimes crave more acceleration and top speed on the open road. I'd like to test ride a 790 one day! 👌
You might enjoy it quite a bit!
Well, as a happy KTM owner, after reading the thousands of complaints on the 790/890 platform (camshaft failures left and right, etc), I wouldn't touch them with a stick...
$10,990 MSRP 2024 KTM 790 Adventure. That is an insanely good package for everything you get compared to tenere. Plus it looks much better than original 790.
you can buy a sherco for that price also
and to do 800 km/day or more if needed?@@hardendurorider
But it's KTM, it will be in the shop every other week
have a 2020 790 adv r. It’s been incredibly low maintenance. Awesome engine. Very fun. Was afraid of ktm reliability but surprised at how good it’s been.
@@hardendurorider Sherco doesn't make adventure bikes.
There are 2 reasons why I never thought about buying a KTM (and I'm from Austria).
1) colour: I really don't wanna have an orange bike.
2) and that's the biggest reason: reliabilty
The most important thing for me is that a motorcycle is reliable. I know a few guys who ride KTMs and every single one of them had massive (and sometimes expensive) problems.
And that's really sad because I think performance wise, these bikes are great.
and the new ktm790 is not as ugly as all the other bikes from team orange.
Agree 100%. Personally, I will never own one for the same reasons. And I will add the smug attitudes of the people who ride them are a bigger turn off. They think they bought skill spending all that money.
I mean... I never got the smug thing... As in, just buy the bike you like, who gives a sh1t what reputation does a brand have? At the end of the day, get what you like and you'll be happy. Usuallly :)
@@tieoneon1614 I can assure you that the ktm owners I know dont think they bought skill. And are very laid back. Maybe you feel insecure and inferior for personal reasons. hahaha I also ride a harley bagger and same types, just bikers enjoying themselves.
Great vid .. I am looking at theses 790s for a do it all all round bike 👊
Cheers!
Very good info and reviews, I m happy to see your review. Because I just put a deposit to buy this one ... so thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
This is my ideal bike if only I could trust it to get me there AND back EVERY TIME
Dont let the internet wackos prevent you from getting the bike you want.
In real life away from the keyboard these are great bikes! Best KTM Ive had out of a lot of them.
I’ve got the original 790s. Its only flaw was the suspension. One serious suspension upgrade later… it’s the only bike I need, and handles pretty messy (steep washed out rocks) easily.
Nice, the 790 was and is a pretty nice platform overall
You need to find a way to test the Honda transalp. I favor this bike because of the cruise control and tubeless tires, but that Honda looks nice.
I'd give one a try if the opportunity ever comes up, why not.
It's always good to hear to a wise man. I'm considering both 790 and Tuareg 660, pricewise they are very close, for me very valid point is how easy is to lift a bike... I guess KTM will be bit easier even with couple kgs more. Nevertheless good review, nice footage, high quality. Cheers.
have you compared them yet in real life?
@@kloppskalli I checked both bikes in real life, 790 felt much lighter to me, I guess it is better weight distribution. I ended up buying very different bike from adventure, but it's not my last word. So when I'm back to considering ADV I will lean towards 790 or maybe something new what market will bring.
Clicked "like" before I watched because I think all your vids are unique and amazing. There is a lot of bikes coming from China now. Will be interesting to see if the quality is ok. I mean the Kove 450 did survive the Dakar so that must mean something.
They've been here in Oz for over a decade, quality on the non-cheap products is good these days. Certainly no worse than Japanese stuff made in SE asia
Yeah, personally I think that these days, Chinese-built does not automatically mean crap quality.
again! Good video :D Just wanna ask something, because you tried so many bikes. Do you know any like... traveling Bike with low seathight and an short space between seat and handlebars?
Out of the ones I tried so far, the 790 is the shortest ADV bike and most approachable. That being said, there are plenty of other bikes I haven't tried
I really like your videos! What is your personal bike?
Great video, I am actually shocked at the price. I never look at new bikes because they are so expensive.
I owned a 790 Adv R from 2019 that I sold for a 701 enduro.
I wonder how this bike would compare to my old 790.
If I remember correctly, the R model has a slightly steeper head angle, which makes it steering way better than the standard model. I felt that mattered more than the difference in suspension.
Maybe I have to go and try one...
I think the biggest difference you would feel is suspension though...
Just ride one from the Dealer and find out yourself. Some review doesnt cut it. The most interesting is the new revision of the engine. I have a 890 R and owned a 790. The engine of the 790 was much more fun, especially on the road.
New subscriber, appreciate your content. Have you tried the Aprilia Tuareg? I went with a Norden, seat height is something that still messes with me...getting used to it.
Thank you! Unfortunately no, but I would love to!
A few years ago, I bought a new 1190 super adventure,
Loved it, miss it.
it had to go.
Just took too tall.
Bought a new KTM 1290superduk gt.
As a 1290 Superduke R owner myself... That's a more than respectable choice
Really well made video and I mostly agree with your opinion, although I think the 390 adv is better for the price (almost half)
To each their own ... I don’t think many would cross ship, but some would :) thanks!
The 390 is a gutless single cylinder sooooo…..no 🤔🤷♂️🤣
Wondering how you would compare it with the new 800DE...it would be somewhere in the middle of 890 Adventure and T7 or am I wrong?
I don't know, I've never ridden that Suzuki. I'd love to try it though
Good that Tenere 700 is finding good competition. Wait for the Kove 800 super adventure, and the CFmoto 450MT.
The more competition the better!
If it wasnt for all that tech, ride modes traction control etc, I would buy one tomorrow.
On the other hand, that's exactly why one would buy something like this over a Tenere. It's a preference thing, and luckily the market has plenty of options
What about the camshaft issue?
Transalp 750?
I was angry at first hearing CFmoto makes them but it's not like KTMs were reliable in the first place lol so I guess i'll get over it, as long as they prove reliable enough. Is a bit annoying though, because you can get a tenere for cheaper and have 0 issues basically and it is made in japan, which does matter, that japanese factor, you can have a tenere for 30 years and I bet if you needed some tiny obscure part you would be able to get it through the huge dealer parts network.
actually, CF moto SSV are more reliable that Japanese brands. Ask the bord patrols or forest guards
In my place, you can't get a Tenere for cheaper. At the end of the day, it depends on what a rider wants. With a Tenere, you trade comfort, tubeless tires and general modern amenities for a Japanese build and reliability. For some, it's worth it. For others, not so much. If I was to spend my own money on such an ADV bike, honestly I would not buy one without cruise control for example. But that would be my use case, for other people other bikes could make more sense.
That's a good point, they do have a pretty good reputation in the ATV and SSV world
Does it have cold start issues? My 2021 890 adv r did.
what issue were you having?
My 2022 KTM 890 adventure was plagued with quality control issues and shit breaking. My final straw was when the radiator was leaking and got told the radiator was deformed from the factory, clear coolant filled from factory and 4 weeks wait to get everything fixed. Keep The Money and do not buy a KTM or maybe mine was a one off...
I think fabrication defects like that are more like a one off... I hope they got you covered under warranty at least.
Double check the ground wire, and put a high end fuel pump in, good to go :) thanks
Nice vid 🤘 Mine leak coolant on thermostat housing on first 100km 🙄 So it has the same problem as older model
Sorry to hear that
If anyone is familiar with Grant Stone boots, they know that China can make some very well specification products. Granted that Grant Stone is a small company unlike CF Moto.
I tried loving the 2023 Gas Gas ES700...and succeeded !!!
Well since CFMoto is making its own variations soon, some people would be better off waiting for that since Im sure its cost will be even lower and different colors
We'll have to see how they will differentiate the 2 bikes
Not for me, thanks to not enough dealer support as a big reason
This looks really nice, I wonder though why KTM isn't selling it in Poland, where I, unfortunately, live. An adventure bike with a fairly low seat would be perfect for me because... I... ride on the snow a lot. Yeah, I ride on the snow. I'm not short at all, obviously. I couldn't be short, I drink RedBull a lot.
On an unrelated note, is it true that KTM has people looking through the comments under the reviews of their bikes? Because if it is true, that is a brilliant idea.
Strange...in Lihuania KTM is a best selling brand, far away from Honda's or Yamaha's numbers
That is strange... They should sell it there at some point too I think
nice bike. it kills camshafts every 10k km tho.
Did you feel any heat from the engine?
Nothing out of the ordinary I’d say. But it was a cold week
Attractive bike for the price, I have couple of the CFMoto 450's and they're actually pretty good, IF you can find a dealer that doesn't rape you on dealer add-ons, it's a great value, challenge is finding such a dealer...
that depends a lot on location

I'm in the southeast US, feel free to share for folks out there looking for an honest deal
How tall are you again? (Feet/inches)really like the looks/price of this bike for my type riding👌
5 foot 7/8

It's so low, even you could touch it

I am now on my 4th KTM & never had any major problems. my next bike will probably be a Honda as KTM is now made in China 🤪
Does anybody has their camshaft failed on these newer ones? This it my only concern about the bike. There was way too many camshaft fails...
Also interested to know this. You're talking about 2019-2022 models yeah? I haven't read much of 2023 models failing
I am having both at home. So I will probable know this season 😁
my 2019 failed. I hope 2023 will not 👌
It could be 2 things: the oil galleys to the heat get clogged, & or the camshafts aren't being hardened properly. Either way, it appears that KTM refuses to acknowledge the issue, so I would continue to expect every bike they make to have this issue.
That said, the aftermarket WILL step in and get owners good camshafts... Any day now...
20k in Australia 😅
I'm sorry for you guys...
Hopefully being Chinese-built, the reliability should improve.
You know, CFMOTO and Yamaha reached an agreement to have a joint venture in China. How funny will it be if cf started building the Tenere for Yamaha?! That would be hilarious!! Cross my fingers it happens!
I actually didn't know that
The ones we get in Australia are made in the Philippines, not China.
Really? Even for the 790s? I thought they were all made in the same factory
@@KRANKiT Yes, the plant is in Laguna, Philippines. It's called KTM Asia Motorcycle Manufacturing Inc. (KAMMI) and they make the 790s for the Asia Pacific market, including Australasia/Oceania. I don't know if they supply any other markets.
big road bike with some dirt tires i would call it a rally bike the fact that its built in china cf moto the chines bikes from now arent the same as the ones from the past i have several Chinese bikes I would complain about the price if anything, in my part of the world.
Or you could get CF MOTO 800 MT Touring fully loaded and same engine.
Sure the weight down low makes it feel lighter, but it also makes it unstable and harder to balance at low speed, (just balance a shovel in the palm of your hand with heavy end up vs down and you'll see what I mean), I found it wants to tuck the front under in slow turns , doesn't have much feel on the road and is harder to keep straight slowly rolling up to a stop at lights compared to a taller centre of gravity. Just my experience.
Interesting, in my experience it was the exact opposite. Having the weight down low requires less input from the rider to balance it, and thus making it easier.
@@KRANKiT Agree it takes less input, but that in my opinion gives it less feel and makes it harder to keep it straight at low speed , I got back on my old GS 650 with it's low centre of gravity after spending a lot of time on my top heavy T7 and it felt almost uncontrollable compared to the T7. The T7 is a bitch if it starts to tip but the height gives it more predictable handling and better weight transfer to tyres for cornering and braking, it's just a bastard to pick up if you drop it. There's quite a science to it and pros and cons to both. A good read is the myth of centre of gravity where he explains why a lot of bikes are faster when they raise the COG.That being said that's just my experience riding it, I guess everyone is different.
You have it backwards
@@Kelly-oq9nh no, I've ridden both that's what I've observed. Someone did a time test through road comes on a sport bike with a low COG, them added weight up high and improved the speed through the same t test. There's quite a bit of research saying the same, but there are times a low COG is an average, presumably like crawling over rocks in a river crossing or such but that's only one part of riding dynamics.
@@Kelly-oq9nh imagine placing the shovel blade-end down on the ground, then from handle try balancing the shovel. Then place the shovel handle-side down on the ground and balance the shovel from the blade. I think most people will find the former is easier to do than the latter. That’s the advantage in placing the MC’s C.G. lower down.
Really, I thing that the bikes made by CFMoto will be more reliable, than those made in Austria. CF moto has a bulletproof reputation in SSV already, that is not a new manufacture, and much more modern compered to Mattighofen plant
One can only hope
I'd probably like it, if it didn't look like a snowmobile
Seriously, if the clutch pull is THAT hard for you............consider a Suzuki DR200, or a CRF250L.
If a person is a total beginner, what is he doing on a 90HP near 500 lb bike off road?
I ll keep my Dr-650
Just bought a Norden 901, but yes, I will be keeping my DR 650 as "back up" 😂
How are you liking your Norden? I am thinking of getting one to accompany my DR650 also.
@@gregjoubert5118 I Haven't even taken a ride yet. I'm in Canada, At least another couple of weeks before the snow/ ice/ temp cooperates enough to go for a spin.
"I never would have thought I would say this about an Austrian bike" You still haven't.
7:06 that’s a good list of std equipment…. I was going to buy a new R1300GS , cash, but now I th8nk I’m going to get one of these and simultaneously purchase £12,000 of TSLA shares with the saving !
(three years from now I think that sum will triple in value…)
ugh, the hatred of Chinese goods just cause they are Chinese is so ignorant. They build to the specs they are given. They aren't just inherently bad.
Also KTM isn't that known for reliability anyway.
so u got the entry level adventure bike from ktm, u comparing it with the Multistrada (worth 37) saying the suspension and brakes are not great and u expect to be taken seriously??
Try listening to what I said again. Carefully this time.
yes dude u did mention the Yamaha tenerè but what can I say "the 790 is not as characterful as a DUCATI Multistrada" really stood out like ok i get the exaggeration
@@asundersweet one, as you realized, it’s an exaggeration. In fact, I exaggerated all those traits like not having the best brakes, nor the best suspensions, and so on. That was exactly the point of those statements, this bike isn’t the best at anything. BUT, it is a complete package. You don’t need to be the best at anything to be one of the best overall. And that’s exactly what I said. All those exaggerations and comparisons were specifically added to prove this point.
Also, I would like to add, in my opinion, character is not related to the price. Example, my 1.5k Ducati monster had heaps more character than the double the price FZ6 I had some time ago. Plus, character is subjective too, so it’s hard to quantify on a scale.
Crappy build quality makes me think of Tesla, not CF Moto
Wish the plastics didn’t look like a tribal tattoo.
I kinda like the plastics...
Good job! But I would advice doing your research instead of simply reading headlines or going by hearsay. There are incorrect information in this video especially in regards to the CFMOTO partnership.
Genuinely curious, what part about the CFMoto partnership did I get wrong?
Actually most parts are made in China & India but they build in Philippines & others countries. Same as FORD & other american companies.
to be exact here's the countries:

- Pune, India
- Mattighofen, Austria (Headquarter)
- Girona, Spain
CKD/CBU Plants:
- Medellin, Colombia (CKD)
- Cartagena, Colombia (CKD)
- Buenos Aires (CKD)
- Manaus, Brazil (CKD)
- Hangzhou, China (Joint Venture plant - CKD, CBU)
- Laguna, Philippines (Joint Venture - CKD, CBU)
- Jitra, Malaysia (CKD)
Of course it beats the T7 easily...everywhere. Not good comparing it to bikes less reliable, but double the price. Btw, things the Chinese build nowadays: ruclips.net/video/cjP7iliL7bg/видео.htmlsi=TgZp0aSXzqh2O9uC
Okay, now tell me another bike that gives 95hp at that price. Do not mention 800mt cf moto because its the same engine….
Im still waiting….
Still waiting
I never said it's bad, did I? :)) That's the whole point of the video, at the price point it's really good!
Let us know hows it's running when theres 3 or 400. 000 miles on it...
Not...
It will be long gone in the first or 2nd year of ownership... just think of all the break downs and lost days of not riding when its in the shop get fixed...

ok KTM, whats the true weight? 5 gallons of fuel, quart of fork oil, 3 quarts of motor oil, 2 quarts of radiator fluid and hard/soft racks mounted, it comes in at 500 pounds ready to ride....
Its another 500 pound slog good for riding 30 mph on groomed forest service roads. Plus, its made in China. No thanks.
I’m shocked to hear questions about made in china still in 2025
Are you really? They're capable of making great hardware... But that isn't the standard yet...
Very confusing review...
Chinese built gives me some hope. KTM doesn't know how to build bikes to a modern standard.
What a joke. Chinese stuff SUCKS
How so? KTM is setting the standards for modern motorcycles. Look at how far behind Japanese bikes are by comparison
@@aaron___6014 sure
