Craig was sold outside the US as Sanyo. Around 1971, a military family became my neighbors and their older son, my age, had the AM/FM/Cassette with the 'stick-shift' control. It had been bought overseas and it was badged 'Sanyo' . At the time, I dreamed about getting one of my own. But just about all of them, any brand, started at nearly $100, which for me, might as well have been $1000! Craig's products may not all have been the best performing. But they were mostly quality-built in Japan. The Craig 212 3" reel to reel was Consumer Report's top-rated 'Best Buy' portable tape-recorder in 1966. It also starred in the '60s TV show 'Mission Impossible' in many of the "tape will self-destruct" scenes. From the late '70s through the '90s, you could find this stuff dirt-cheap at yard-sales and flea-markets. But lately, I have been seeing prices climb on eBay.
Thank you, loved this! It only took 3 years for RUclips to recommend it lol. I had the Craig 212 recorder as a kid, I loved that thing and used it all the time. My mom got it at Lafayette, I believe our local branch was a Craig dealer and they carried or could get most of their products. I currently have a 2106 5” portable in my collection waiting to be restored.
I bought the Craig model 2401 reel-to-reel 7" reels tape recorder circa 1969. Although this catalog listed it as $169.95, I was able to get it for a bit under $150.00. I still have it! It was a beautiful piece of machinery in its day.
I think Craig sold their stuff anywhere they could find a retailer willing to carry it. I'm sure the hi fi and car audio chains carried Craig and sold those Craig/Pioneer car tape players. Probably the rest of the stuff found a retail home at the likes of Service Merchandize, Best, KMart, Woolco, some of the "local" department store chains, maybe some of the better drug store chains... If anyone knows of any retail outlet that had any sort of exclusive arrangement with Craig, I'm sure we'd all like to know.
When I used to go to grade school and one of the students there , his last name was Craig. I remember him telling me that his father owned the company. It was all BS....🤣🤣🤣
"Parent company" is not an accurate term to use here, I don't believe. Pioneer existed in Japan as Fukuin Electric Works. Channel Master was a New York based company that imported much (or all?) of its product line. Did all of it come from Sanyo? I don't know. Craig was also an importer, as the video describes.
I still have the AM/FM radio shown at 13:56, model 1404. Unfortunately when I last turned it on, it went pop and made some smoke. Probably to do with old capacitors - any suggestions on how to get it fixed? It's another one that says Sanyo on the inside.

I had the shortwave radio at about 14:00 when I was a kid. Thanks for reminding me of this!
We sold these in the late 70's and early 80's at P.N.Hirsch & Co.
Wow! I actually had the big am/fm/sw radio with the buttons on top. Brings back memories. Thank's!
Cool.
I’ve seen some of these as a teenager.
Question:
Who sold Craig brand❓
Love the old catalog.

I’m thinking 🤔.......
have the 2106 R2R player, still works...5 bucks from a flea market...auto reverse R2R was a premium option ....

Sanyo Craig pioneer and channel master we’re all one in the same at that point. Sanyo was the parent company of all of them

The Craig I used to know as a very young kid made toys.
