  • HEY. LISTEN. HELLO. WATCH OUT.
    Ocarina of Time turns 25 this year, and considering I haven't played it in almost that long, I figured it was time to come back to Hyrule. But what if our trusty sword was a replica? What do you do when you don't have a sharp hunk of metal to hack-n-slash your way through the game?
    Time to find out if we can beat Zelda Ocarina of Time without a sword of any kind. Go get some popcorn, this one's a long one.

    If I remember right, the deku stick does indeed deal the same damage as a sword. It's just that it's the master sword, and not the kokiri sword, so you're basically dealing double damage during the child arc. Also jump attacks deal double damage again, so you're dealing 4 damage to the kokiri sword's standard of 1. 2 when jumping slashing.

      Damage values are based on each of Link's hearts having 8HP.
      Kokiri Sword, Broken Deku Stick, and Broken Giant's Knife all do 4 damage.
      Master Sword and Deku Stick do 8 damage.
      Biggoron Sword and Unbroken Giant's Knife do 16 damage.
      This is specifically because Dark Link has the same HP as you do, which can vary depending on how many Heart Containers and Heart Pieces each player obtains in their adventure.
      This actually means that you can defeat Dark Link in 2 hits if you get the Biggoron Sword and don't collect any health upgrades. The opposite can also be true if you use glitches to get 20 hearts (160 HP) before fighting him or just cheat for max HP with GameShark codes.

    I remember using Farore's Wind a lot as a kid, actually. It was basically a two-way Homeward Bone; if a dungeon was giving me grief, I'd use it to make a warp point where I was, then leave the dungeon and come back when I had more fairies/magic/potions/items and be able to pick up right back where I left off. It wasn't game-breaking or anything, but it saved me a lot of time going through puzzles over and over.

    • @Dwyer69
      @Dwyer69 Год назад +37

      See I don't remember it working as a two way homeward bone, I just remember it being a warp to the entrance of a dungeon from inside it. And I feel like there's never been a moment in a pre-BotW Zelda game where there's any reason to leave a dungeon in the middle of it. There's not really any resources you need to replenish from outside a dungeon besides fairies, and even then they aren't super rare in dungeons.
      I can't really think of any moment in a Zelda game, especially OoT, where the value of this spell jumped out at me, despite it clearly being good in the right setting

The Deku sticks have limited durability and break after a few hits or so. Because of this, you can only use them so much. You have the ability for child Link to do as much damage as adult Link (aside from the Biggoron's Sword), but only as long as your supply of Deku sticks last.

    • @hi-ougidemonfang

      The vanilla use of it is you use it, It creates a warp point at the last door you used, and then teleports you to the dungeon entrance. you can then use it again to warp back to the room in the dungeon saving time. I guess. Randomizers and some mods often have an option to let you use it to set a warp point anywhere. And yeah some glitches can change where it’s supposed to warp you too.

Maybe you’re confusing the “memory manipulation” part with power crouch stab, a glitch that takes advantage of a crouch stab not having a defined damage value, which causes it to default to the last used damage value. This means for example if you swung kokiri sword normally before doing a crouch stab, it will deal 1 damage point, while if you used jump slash with kokiri sword before crouch stabbing you would deal 2 damage points

    It's fitting to feel nostalgia for a game like this. I remember sitting Infront of my small square-back tv, half a metre away, and playing with a blanket around me to keep me warm when I was about 10 years old.
    It's a game about growing up, and it feels kind of sad about how simple times were when we were younger. But also how much we can do as adults. Which is a theme if the game.

    There's a nifty little trick that should actually fix BOTH of the times you broke the challenge. Crouch stabs have the rather unique property of storing the damage value and type of the previous attack, so if you jump attack with the master sword and then crouch stab with the hammer, it tricks the game into thinking you attacked with the master sword, and uses its jump attack value.

As an adult, your only option to do more damage to load for stabs is the biggoron's sword, although the giants knife also works as long as its not broken. Oh, Lemon, you brave soul! Taking on Ocarina of Time without a sword? That's like going to a war with a spoon. This video had me on the edge of my throne, clutching my pearls and laughing all at once.
    Firstly, I must commend your audacity. Who needs a sword when you have sticks, slingshots, and sheer determination? Your journey through the Great Deku Tree with nothing but sticks was a nostalgic joyride, and watching you whack Goma into submission was oddly satisfying. And let's not forget the endless grind for rupees - the true test of patience and sanity.
    Navigating the dungeons without your trusty sword was like watching a toddler try to conquer Mount Everest. The makeshift roller coaster of bomb hovers, boomerang throws, and fire puzzles was an absolute delight. Your commentary, peppered with sarcasm and humor, made the grinding and backtracking bearable.
    Dark Link, my dear nemesis, you handled him like a seasoned pro. Using dins fire and your hook shot to outmaneuver him was a stroke of genius. The frustration was palpable, but your perseverance shone through. The Phantom Ganon battle with the bottle trick? Classic. I nearly spilled my tea laughing.
    Bongo Bongo's hook shot glitch, though - what a revelation! Your dedication to uncovering every possible method, even if it meant diving into the murky depths of game versions, was truly commendable. Even though the run hit a brick wall there, you carried on with grace and wit.
    And finally, the showdown with Ganon. Watching you roll past his attacks and land those precious hammer blows was exhilarating. The moment you realized the master sword wasn't a replica - priceless! The triumphant finish was the cherry on top.
    In short, this video was a roller coaster of nostalgia, frustration, and triumph. You've given Ocarina of Time a new flavor, and it’s a dish I’ll savor for a long time. Bravo, Lemon! Can't wait to see what you tackle next. Maybe a no-jump Mario run? Just kidding... or am I?

    Actually, the Speedrunning glitch used against Bongo Bongo probably wouldn't get around the no sword restriction. The ISG in the title of Sniping's video certainly refers to the Infinite Sword Glitch, which causes the Master Sword to basically be in a constant state of dealing damage. If you look at their video (or 44:10 in this video) you can actually see the impact flashes coming off from where it's hitting, showing that it is almost certainly the sword which is dealing damage, which I would assume is still against the rules of this run.

    1. Sticks do double the Damage over the kokiri Sword, So if you use a stick to jump attack it be like if you jump attacked with the Kokiri sword twice making it really good for weak points where you can only get 1 good swing on them.
    2. Farore's Winds ability to teleport you back is extremely helpful especially when you get the teleportation songs because then you can leave the dungeon by teleportation, like the temple of time then put the sword back, go to castle town and restock or alternatively teleport to the graveyard into to Kakariko to restock on goods and equipment then you teleport to the temple of time, and grab the sword again if your a kid and its a adult dungeon or vice versa. if not then after either case recast Farore's wind after your resupply run to recall yourself to the dungeon where you last left off which I have done before cutting all mid dungeon resupply runs essentially in half since you don't have to travel back to the dungeon or through it again.
    It also is helpful in dungeons where you know you will be backtracking cause you can place it in strategic locations and just teleport to where your backtracking to instead of having to go there so its use if purely up to is you do mid dungeon resupply runs or are knowledgeable on when you backtrack. Another use if a certain entry or enemy leads to a path you cant undo without re traversing large swaths of a dungeon because of making such an accident if your still in the room then you can teleport back to the entrance of the way you came in to undo such an error or use it to safeguard yourself from enemies that teleport you back to the entrance by casting it before they do so.
    And finally there is no range limit or restriction on its recall function and the MP cost is only used on the mark for the spell not its recall side so for instance you can use it to bob back and fourth between dungeons using the recall regardless of MP, by planting it in one and complete another then teleport to the other after a optional small resupply run and then you can do 2 in a row back to back instantaneously. Honestly yall really be sleeping on this one as in any RPG Mark & Recall is a really good pair of spells to have in your back pocket for utility.
    3. 24:02 I think I should explain this the amount of time Lemon here can hold his breath or be in a hot area is based on your current health not maximum health. But it does mean for every quarter heart you have its an 2 additional seconds or 8 seconds per heart. Its under a minute because you only have 6 hearts which only amounts to 48 seconds at max so by raising Lemons maximum health it doesn't just raise the amount of abuse Lemon can take but also raises his Endurance in such situations given he is not injured.
    Fun fact if you jump into lava or do anything that resets the area the counter will reset to a maximum according to your new current health after the Lava takes a heart. So if your about to run out of time in death mountain and you have plenty of hearts to spare you can actually save yourself from the instant death caused from running out the clock by sacking a heart, and jumping into Lava.

      @videogamerNattie98 Год назад +2

      Since I don't want to lose the heart to edit more putting the extra in a reply under will do fine for these extra points also spoiler warning you should watch the video first.
      4. Shadow Lemon's Health is based on your maximum health the more health you have the more it takes to beat him so if you collected alot of hearts you would have made the run very problematic in that section of the game. Also as you may have noticed Shadow Lemon gets more solid as the fight goes this is because he is slowly scanning you throughout the fight and once he is fully solid he goes on the offensive since he now has studied how you fight. But this is why in 3 heart runs he is a absolute push over but in 100% runs he is a rather durable and exhaustive to fight.
      5. 38:21 I also see you found the broken Stick glitch if you break a stick with a jump slash in midair and land or get hit after it breaks but before Lemon puts it away or if you hit two things at once with a stick it will break like normal but you keep the broken stick out. It retains the double damage but now it becomes a fully fledged permanent weapon until Lemon here puts it away again.
      6. 41:16 Because the Mirror shield is a key item besides being reflective, Like Likes those things that take shields and tunics away cant take the mirror shield away from Lemon meaning you now have a permanent shield even if they grab you so its a direct upgrade over the Hylian shield even if the functionality of it is the same.
      7. 44:18 Yep they made not 1 not 2 but 3 versions of the cartridge known as 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 respectively
      1.0 was made when it was first released. (Ironically a month after my birthday with the game being made on 1998/10/21 from what we have gathered from the build date with my birthday being 1998/9/21. Also after it reaches that date of this year the game and myself will be officially 25 years old with me reaching that age a month sooner of course.)
      In any case 1.1 was made 5 days after the game was first released basically think of it like a back then day 1 patch.
      1.2 was made a little over 2 weeks after the 2nd patch.
      1.1 Fixed a myriad of bugs in the game.
      1.2 Fixed more bugs, changed Gannon's blood to green from red, changed the fire temple music to be a remix of shadow temple's music, and the one dreadful thing in your case fixed that bug your describing that skips bongo bongos cutscene letting you kill him immediately many. They are also the most common cart
      You can tell the version by looking at the back of your cartridge there will be 2 numbers stamped on the cart if there is only 2 numbers then you possess a rare 1.0 cartridge most golden carts are this version with 1.1 version golden carts being known to exist but are very rare and because of the limited run time of the gold cart paired with it being an update at the end of its production run a 1.1 golden cart of this game is the rarest cart of all.
      If a letter is followed after the 2 numbers then its one of the two later revisions.
      XX = 1.0
      XXA = 1.1
      XXB = 1.2 (This is the one me, and you have as they are the most common cart basically this was the default version made for any future production runs after its first month of release.)
      As such I do not count the sword use against you on bongo bongo on the grounds that you have to use the sword only because they patched it when it was at one point doable without one. But as you shown Gannon cant be beaten unless you use the Master Sword on him in the finale so the answer to your question is you can beat 99% of the game without the sword but the final hits on Gannon have to be done with the Master Sword you also need to use the sword on Bongo Bongo if you are playing a 1.2 version cart due to the lack of the cutscene skip.

      Beating Bongo is still doable because of Power Crouch Stab. Uninitialized, it does 1 generic damage.

    Waves of nostalgia, immediate relaxation and positive serotonin, all from 30 of music.
    You can use Farore's Wind to at a point in the dungeon you want to return to, like say the boss room entrance, and recast it at the start of the dungeon to get there instantly.

    It was useful in the fire temple in case you fell off the spiral staircase to get the megaton hammer. Also was kind of useful in the room where you had to free the goron on the second floor of the rock maze in case you fell off. Other than that, Forore's wind is fairly useless outside of bugs and glitching.

    About Bongo Bongo: I’m pretty sure that deku sticks deal damage to him. If you can reach the end of the Shadow Temple as Young Link, you could beat him.

    That's also not just the hookshot. That's the infinite sword glitch which acts as link swinging his sword ever frame. It counts as using the sword.

    As a Former OOT Speedrunner I enjoyed this quite a lot. And to your bongo dilemma: the only thing that comes to mind and what was used in snipings video is infinite sword glitch. It does however use sword damage to infinitely hit a thing. So I doubt that would’ve qualified for your challenge. Then again using glitches there is several methods to beat opt without a sword. If you want to see what oot speedrunners do for challenge runs check out the low% category, it’s insane. Love your videos as always lemon you are chill as heck and I always have a good time.

    I feel like you're underestimating deku nuts. Stunning enemies (especially dark link, but as you learned, you need to aim a bit sideways) is pretty valuable, and on Barinade is actually kills the jellyfish (and also the soap bubbles, and also make all the flying mantas get up into the air).
    And Farore's wind is cool when you know the dungeons well enough and don't want to backtrack. It cuts the necessary amount of raising / lowering water in the water temple by a third, for instance. And it lets you immediately get back up to try to get the hammer again whenever you fall.
    38:20 If you break a stick in mid-air, Link doesn't put it away like he usually does. So you can just continue swinging it (with slightly reduced range). You can make it happen at will by jump-attacking a wall at just the right distance. If I recall, that distance is exactly one backflip if the wall is perfectly vertical.
