Seen damage to starters and alternators when operating 100% offroad where fine dust and water is an everyday occurrence. Internal components were very highly worn at time of overhaul ,most were replaced with new . 100% Dirt road work tends to sand blast paint so a rubber shield is a good idea . For a family truck comes down to the individual .
I was informed they are not there to keep the engine free of mud and dirt etc but was there to help direct the airflow from the grille right around the motor and under the car to maximise heat dispersion. An airflow slipstream so to speak. Has to do with air pressure pockets etc. In your case the air will come in and out the wheel arch path of least resistance. Its engineering type stuff like the airplane wings lamina flow etc. Over my pay grade.
I suppose if they didn't matter or do anything they wouldn't put them there. One thing I did do is make some rubber plugs & use grommets to plug those outside facing holes in the chassis rails to keep dirt & dust out of them. My Landcruiser VDJ79R chassis rails are clean on the inside like the day they came from the factory whereas my old mates is full to the holes with dirt. Can't be good for them when it gets wet.
@@Fourby4Diesel Could be to do with hot air management & engine bay airflow & cooling the engine too. With them in place the cooler air is more likely to get drawn the front and pushed out the back of the engine bay cooling the rear of the motor and components.

I changed my alternator 2 weeks ago. I broke the clips taking the cover off in order to gain access. After running for 2 weeks on and off road I have noticed mud splashes on the alternator. I don’t mean to disagree with you, but you generally say Toyota knows best. Anyway, I guess it’s personal choice. I’ve ordered about 20 clips, and i’m going to refit the cover - I will have enough spares now for any occasion that requires remove the covers for inspection or repairs.
The fourth one came off on this trip and I have monitored the situation for years. It makes no difference in my experience, just Tidey the view from the side up, which I’m not really interested in. I’d rather be inspecting and cleaning properly.
The real question would be why does Toyota choose to mount the most sensitive external component of the engine (the alternator) right next to the wheel arch and down low in the first place...even in the 79 series and 200 series they are flagship off-road vehicles and it's the same....either stupid or they just hate theyr customers and taking the piss making a fortune off selling replacement alternators
You can replace them if you like, but as I said in the video, my reasons are, it’s a waste of time. I prefer it open for inspection, maintenance, and cleaning and my experience is nothing goes from the Tyres through sideways to the engine bay, which I explained in the video that was the point of it.
Anthony are we ever going to see your face in a video? I have been following you for a very long time and have never seen your mugshot. Be nice to put a face to the voice just once haha. Yeah i recently replaced my 120 splashguard inserts from AliExpress $18 for the set of 4 + new clips & fitted up perfect. Not sure what Genuine are priced at but no doubt expensive

Like you say it makes maintenance much easier by allowing you to actually clean parts of the engine bay

When looking at a new vehicle, it would look untidy to see the engine components it’s not a quality finish without them

I might point out the default air intake on a lot of Toyotas is in that wheel area. The Toyota engineers did not seem too concerned about it.

I know exactly what you’re saying. It’s a waste of time replacing them. My Prado hasn’t had them for a while an it’s been just fine.

I'm all for genuine Toyota parts, but these replacement liner kits are like $20 on eBay, so why not replace them.
