What do I think of the NEW Tri-blend BRUSH Markers?

  • Using the markers was an emotional roller coaster full of twists and turns! Find out what I think of these triple nibbed brush pens in today's review!
You can find sets and singles of these markers at Blick: shrsl.com/3r3mn
The original set of 24 is on sale on Amazon 10/18/22: amzn.to/3SajgZJ
*These markers were sent to me from crafter's Companion for review purposes.
**UPDATE: I just heard back from Crafter's Companion about the color range and they said they have no plans to expand the colors but HSN (home shopping) as an auto-ship option for additional colors. I looked at the 3 pack sets they sell and the colors all seem to be in the 24 original colors so if you purchase the 24 set and the 3 packs you will have duplicates.
The NEW Tri-Blend Markers from Spectrum Noir are designed for crafters to create 3 color blends in the color families of the Spectrum Noir range of markers. Simon Says Stamp has the markers for $4.99 each shrsl.com/2h0lu (affiliate link) which is pretty reasonable since they have 3 brush nibs and if I want to buy a 3 pack of replacement nibs for my copics it costs $7-$8) These markers were just released last week so not many stores carry them yet, I linked to Simon Says Stamp because they ship worldwide and have flat rate international shipping.
    Pros:
*Price (3 colors in one family for $5)
    *Convenience (fewer markers to carry)
*Fits in the Spectrum Noir color collection so if you have other SN markers they will work well together and if you have refill inks you could revive them (although they are not marketed as refillable)
    * High-quality brush nibs, very similar to Copic
*Caps are easy to remove for arthritic hands (Be careful replacing them do you don't damage the tip on the edges.)
*Despite the length of the markers they are very comfortable to hold (they are one of the larger markers around tho)
    Cons:
*There are some pretty big jumps between colors making for difficult blends especially with the blues pinks and purples, alternately there were a couple of markers with tones too close together
*Some of the colors don't seem to match the original Spectrum Noir Markers exactly
*Since you essentially have 3 markers in one barrel there is not a lot of room for ink so these markers are likely to run out sooner than traditional markers.
    Bottom Line:
The brush nibs on these are perfect, they are so much fun to color with that it's a shame that some of the color choices in a marker are too far apart to create a smooth blend. I think they were probably trying to get more variety in a limited amount of markers but I worry that beginners might get frustrated and think it is their fault the blends are not smooth. I wish they used the color pics from the original first 24 tri-blends because those tones blended beautifully and it really would be effortless if they were in the brush form. That said for coloring the images I showed they worked very well. Smaller areas will be fairly easy to blend and since these are marketed to stampers it will probably be fine as they are working in smaller areas. I think the ink would run out too fast for marker artists rendering full page artwork. I recommend trying a few colors that don't have big jumps in color number (zoom in on the package photo and look at the end of the marker with the color codes, chose ones where the colors are only a step or 2 away from the next color) and see what you think. Also, I think some of the purples and greens are "samey" so you probably don't need all the colors for a decent variety.

Great review Lindsay. I’ve never owned or worked with alcohol markers, and finally splurged and bought the 24-set of Tri-Blend markers last month. Shortly after receiving them, they announced they’d be releasing brush tip Tri-Blends. I was so disappointed, because if I’d known the brush tips were coming I would have waited!
Seeing your review, I’m glad I didn’t wait!! You’re such a talented and experienced artist, and if you’re having a difficult time blending the colours, I would definitely struggle as an alcohol marker newbie.
I bought the Tri-Blends because they seemed like a good set for beginners - easy to blend, and a cost-effective way to get 72 colours in a 24 set. I’m really enjoying them so far, and now my bad case of FOMO (fear of missing out!) has been cured, thanks to your honest and thorough review.
I hope they re-consider their colour choices based on your review, and learn that they should send a new product to you to focus test PRIOR to launch!
Thanks for sharing and curing my FOMO. 😊

With your blending skill set, it's clear that Spectrum Noir needs to rethink their choices..And, the amount of ink it takes to get a good blend, sadly, your markers will be dry soon. It's too bad when you think about the research they must have done to come up with these color jumps. Glad you shared this..Sandy

I wish they used their original color choices from the first triblends, they were good! I think they might have gotten feedback that there were too many colors in that line or maybe wanted to have a smaller run of colors due to the economy and so they tried to cram too much variety of color range in the markers.

Spectrum Noir did do a “re-do” on their colors several years ago (according to my friend with connections to Crafters Companion/Spectrum Noir and sells their products.) They did alter many of the original colors. I have the original markers and the refills were not the same color. I think I was told they were trying to fill in some color gaps. The color choices for the Tri-Blend TB one really is off, and like you have said, they have had so many reformulations of pen barrels, ink refill bottles, and pen styles, it has been hard to follow (and at times impossible to get re-inkers.) Thank you for sharing your experience with them.

If you decided to refresh the markers, you could choose refills in colors closer to one another. And, since the markers carry less ink, that could actually be an advantage in that you wouldn't have to wait a year for the ink to run out so you could refill using colors closer to one another to facilitate better blending. :)

Lindsey, this is a very accurate review I believe. Watching Sara demo these I thought they were not blending well so I didnt want to buy them until they were reviewed.I was disappointed because I really liked the ones I have without the brush nibs. In fact, I have the classic collection markers but REALLY enjoyed the triblends more. Remember the Camilion pens? Great idea, right? Well nobody has time for that! 🤣 Really, I dont want to wait. Spectrum Noir tri- blends bullet tips work great so I am disappointed that the new markers didnt pan out. Something went wrong. Different formula maybe? I'm sure Sara will get on this and get it fixed. Crafters Companion is a very good quality company who has too much of my cha ching!🙈💕 tfs❣ your results. ....not related but fyi...I just bought the new CC confetti pop box dies and LOVED THEM!!! I am having so much fun making these boxes! It's a hoot watching people play with them😁. A good example of CC quality. I tried making these boxes without a die a gazillion times. FAILED🙈 even through much determination and persistence so when I found this die set I jumped on it. I was skeptical but to my astonishment the first box I put together was a complete success! Sara's team really thought it through. I know you're THE FRUGAL crafter but you also do invest in tools. This is a set you will use over and over for many occasions and all age groups. LOVE your videos Lindsey, you are an essential part of my craft life💕

They chose different colors on some of these with bigger jumps between shades for some reason, probably for more variety. Brush nibs are easier to blend with but those big color jumps are hard to do. I wiyb they kept more of the original choices.

I was so excited when you mentioned the Tri Blend the other day. I am definitely going to purchase these after watching your review. When I travel I hate taking my expensive Copics. I usually refill them before I leave and I have had one leak before. When I fly I always carry them on and they are heavy, but I am afraid the airline will lose my luggage or they will come up missing. 24 markers are sure alot lighter than 72 even though they look bigger than a normal marker. It is so funny to think that markers and craft supplies are more important then clothes when you travel, It would totally ruin my vacation if I could not color. You guys know what I am talking about.
In my hotel room I am also afraid they will get lost or stolen. As long as I know the color difference I can always throw in a couple of the missing colors. This is so perfect for travel. I have completely stayed away from Spectrum Noir for awhile now. I purchased the original alcohol markers and they dried up so fast. That was before I knew you can use other refill brands or a little bit of alcohol (Vodka) if in a pinch. But after watching your review they look really juicy. Thank you so much for your honest review. I totally agree with everything you said, but in my situation the purchase of the Tri Blends will be perfect.
I also wanted to ask you about some card stock. Have you ever used brand Accent Opaque bought on Amazon? The price difference between them and other brands are crazy. 120 lb 325 gsm Cover Smooth is .157 per sheet (188179) and 80 lb 216 gsm Cover Super Smooth is only .047 per sheet (121947). I really like this brand and it is so affordable. I am sure if you did a review it would go crazy. The 120 lb is great for the base when making cards. Let me know if you decide to review it, I would really like to know your opinion and I just think it is such a wonderful deal it should be shared with everyone.

Thanks - excellent rewiew! I just ordered 6 packs of the brush triblends (3 in each pack so should be 18 pens, which equals 36 colours). Ordered them about an hour before your rewiew came 😂😂. Don’t regret it despite your rewiew, price was good (you can get them from Cradtstash now) and I have quite a few illustrators so can use them when the jumps are too big if I need to.
But I hope for the future they make some changes - and also that they explain what’s going on with the same colour coded markers being different colours.

Oh cool! I could only find singles and the 24 pack bug I did see smaller multi packs on the cc website and I thought they were from the first 24, they probably were the others you mentioned. There were no singles on the cc website do I lined to SSS as they have singles. Dont regret your purchase, the brush nibs feel great and 36x3 colors is a lot to pick from:)

I have a lot of the original ones and have heard that they changed the colors. I'm hoping I have enough of a variety to make up the difference with the big color gaps. I saw a video (can't remember who) that they are releasing more colors in smaller packs - Oct, Dec, Feb for sure, maybe Apr. to complete the collection.

Glad to see this, because I swatched the Tri-Blends by color number with the originals and found quite a difference. Also, thought too much difference in the three rather than gradual. However, I have everyone's marker, and still think the Tri-Blend is the best invention in the paper crafting industry! Since the new "Brush" markers are only a brush "shaped" tip rather than a "real" brush, I don't plan to purchase them. I have several brands with real brushes, and they constantly show coloring on acetate, then picking up with a brush to apply it. I love the company and have bought everything and used it. However, now that there is a new marker for each "tip", supposedly with the same color "range", it is redundant.

Thank you so much 4 this clear and SO honest review!!! 👍 💋 I biught 48 of the "old" tri blend markers and LOVE them, but when i saw that they came up with the brush version i cried inside... But not going to buy them now and ne even happier with the ones i have, even if they arenotbrush. It is indeed such a shame that the jump in color is so big, in the other version they are amazing. Thx!!!! And it was a shock that the color of the numbers are not the same!! So glad you told me, cause i wanted to buy some extra normal markers to get some extra colors i would also want to match the tri blend markers, but not smart.. But i think those numbers/colors should be of the samecolor, not so OK 😫😩. Thanx your review is brilliant and so COMPLETE!! wow👌

I love that you go into so much detail and use them to make sure the first impression isn't a fleeting one. I hate when channels open the package, do a few swatches, give the product a glowing review, and then they never use them again or later in a video say they don't like them after using them with no way to know that if you only see the review.
I'm grateful to know the gaps are too big on some of the markers because I tend to rely on sets to work together. I would have wondered what I was doing wrong for awhile before I would have figured out the issue wasn't all my lack of technique.

The inconsistency on the colours is one of the things that really annoy me. I have been told it's because they reformulated the ink, but markers from different lines aren't the same no matter that they have the same #. I would be very hesitant to get any refills for any of the markers 'cause what colour would it be?

I am thinking it's easier and cheaper to use watercolor. However, seems like it's difficult to get skin tones in gouache and looks like maybe 3 or 4 of those markers could probably cover most skin tones if people wanted to do mixed media type things.

Hummm🙄. The big difference between the shades really defeats the purpose of those 'Tri' easy blend markers... Also, not only the gap between the shades is too big to make shading work, I noticed the blending itself is not good. Too streaky which also defeats the purpose of blending markers.... My cheap markers do a better job😉. Thank you for your honest review as always😊.

I’ve always been a buyer of Spectrum Noir. Recently I tried the Tri-Blends and loved them. I’m more into alcohol markers now than I ever was before. And I agree, sometimes I just can’t get the blends I am looking for with the SN. I don’t own a single Copic. But I can’t help but kicking myself for spending money on the SN when maybe all along I should’ve just bought particular markers/blends I was looking for in Copics. I do have a set of Ohuhu and I like them very much and use them as a “fill in” where I need to. I always wonder if SN and Crafters Companion makes so many changes because they are marketed to crafters and not “serious artists”. {insert eye roll and wink}. Also, Lindsay, do you have any particular blends/colors of Copics that you feel are must haves? I’m always looking for a marker to shade and highlight polar bears, rabbits, white critters but I can never seem to get that right grey color. Great review!!! Thanks!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 года назад +2

You can't go wrong with a good range of greys for shading. I grab my Blick studios a lot to use with my copics if I want a brush tip but I use many brands. I do recommend investing in a marker that has a refill for colors you use a lot as it's cheaper in the long run. I don't have a specific color recomendation tho but like I said, a good set of greys is a must!

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Maybe I am focusing too much on the color family. Ie. red with red etc. Grey's never crossed my mind. Gonna hit up my stash tomorrow. There has to be a decent range of grey in there and I’m just looking over it. Thanks, Lindsay!!!

    • @thefrugalcrafter

I think the big difference us copic has their own factory and the other brands use a variety of chinese factories to make the markers and they have little control over changes. I mix and match my brands so dont be afraid to buy a single marker her and there to fill in gaps. They dont all have to be copics to work well!

Lindsay, am I crazy or was there a video from you in the last 24 hours about some FANTASTIC cheap watercolors? I've tried to find it 2 hours later without success. Did you pull it, or rename it? I'm ALWAYS glued to your videos when you introduce new/great paints! Thank you!

Frances, One of the cheap watercolor sets she reviewed are the Pretty Excellent set. Here's the link for her review: ruclips.net/video/rFRO6UPqzWA/видео.html . I bought them at amazon and love them. I just checked, and they still have them available.

I gave up on Spectrum Noir a long time ago. Got tired of new formulas, etc especially considering the $$ I spent on the originals. CC states you can use their new formula with the older pens and refill them which I have as of yet to try. I'm just thinking that if I want to enjoy coloring with alcohol markers I'm just going to start buying the Copic markers- you get what you pay for.

On one hand it's good that they strive to improve but it burns the early adopters. I would love to be in a focus group:)

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich If i were to guess, I would say that CC does not use focus groups. They seem to put flawed products out, time and time again, using the purchasing public as ginny pigs. In addition they refuse to stand behind their products. Buyer beware. Thanks again Lindsay for your honest reviews. They have surely saved countless consumers tons of money!

@@emptynestscrapper961 I absolutely agree with you. I purchased many CC products, but in the last couple of years their quality has gone down a lot, you are right they use consumers as guinea pigs, they mislead us with their shows which now they have 2 a day and it's very obvious that they push people to buy giving us very misleading information. I stopped buying from them. The ink and the color system should be the same for the entire marker line, that's what they say, but it's not true. What bothers me the most how pushy they become and praise their products as being the best and that's far from the truth. Y hope Sara watches Lindsay's review because she is not only experienced but honest to a fault, I would believe her over Sara always

Based on Lindsay's review I bought the Ohuhu brand at Amazon and love them. I just invested in the brush marker set and I think the brushes are better than Copics. My opinion only 😁

Judith F Thanks Judith, it’s nice to know it’s not “just me”. It took me a long time to save up, and I collected 72 illustrator markers, but after I started using them, the brush nibs began to decompose. No sooner did that happen, did I see Lindsay’s review on the Spectrum Noir new illustrator markers with improved brush nibs. I immediately contacted the company to see if they would replace the markers or the nibs. They were uninterested, and offered nothing to stand behind their product. I will never buy from them again, and warn shoppers as often as I can.

I sincerely appreciate your honesty when reviewing any product, but especially with markers that tend to be pricy to begin with. I'd rather use 3 different pens that come closer to the ombre range desired than to invest in pens that aren't nearly as close as they should be just because they're in the same marker. I'll refrain from purchasing these pens and maybe in a year or two they'll have a much improved ombre selection in each marker so I'll feel better about spending my hard earned money on them? Just hangin' lose...

How long ago did the 1st ittiration come.out? I wonder if they have changed the ink and in turn the color has changed. It appears the the triblend and the brush tip are mire similar other than the fleshtine family.

Hi thinking of trying these markers out would u suggest I go for the bullet ones or the brush x

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 года назад

Well, I only have the original 24 sets of each. The brussh tips are better nibs but the colors they picked for the bullet versions were better blends. If you are a stamper working am all id go for the bullets otherwise go for the brush.

Are you comparing the classic colors vs 2 verses the classique colors, they reformulated them. The triblend colors are similar to the classique., according to them, I don’t have all, lol.

Very disappointed with spectrum noir. Had the full set of the original ones, plus many refills. Something was very wrong with the refills, they dried out to a funky consistency. Total waste of $$$$

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 года назад +1

Oh no! I didnt hear that about the refills. I had to add denatured alcohol to many of my old square ones and they work great now (they dried but were hardly used) so you might be able to revive them.
