- For this trip my wife, son, and I travel from Portland, Oregon to Chicago, Illinois by Amtrak train. We purchased bedroom in the sleeper car that we shared for around 48 hours. We got to see a handful of new states and spend a lot of time together which we all greatly enjoyed. There are a few things that I included here in my experience that I didn't know about prior to riding Amtrak that may help you prepare for your future trip. Thanks for watching!

I've watched a lot of Amtrak videos and not one had a toddler along. I've been thinking how fun it would be to take my grandkids and their parents. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. You did a great job sharing the ups and downs. I'm really picky about cleanliness and that's one of the reasons I haven't pushed to move forward on Amtrak with the little ones. European trains seem much cleaner and more modern however, riding Amtrak at least once is a right of passage for Americans! Your family is adorable.
My toddler had the most amazing time on the train and keeps asking me for another train trip. I would definitely recommend, just bring disinfecting wipes for all the surfaces. The blankets they provide are clean and in sealed plastic bags. Thanks for watching!
wow brother your videos creatures captured in camera were part of my childhood as a child I believed them now they seem incredible to me 😊❤️
That's awesome! Thanks
Amtrak has been refurbishing the entire Superliner fleet of cars, long over due. Some of them have been around since the late 1970s, the newest since the early 1990s. I have found the heaters a bit too warm, and the air conditioning a bit too cool, especially the top bunk closest to the HVAC vent. I have also found the sound insulation between bedrooms and roomettes not very good.
The refurbishment is a stopgap. Amtrak put out a request for proposals for replacement equipment for the superliners
It’s gonna be interesting to see what comes of this. They hope to have new rollingstock rolling sometime in the 2030s.
I’m doing this route in November…last year I did it from Chicago to Seattle
10:50 Didn't look like Joey enjoyed the Mac & Cheese, lol. Glad to see everyone enjoyed their vacation. : )

Too hot I guess! He only like his food luke-warm or cold 😂
It was a lot of fun watching your video. I especially enjoyed watching what great parents you are to your kid. My grandmother used to enjoy traveling by Amtrak, and I've wondered about doing a little Amtrak travel myself. But I have to say your video and other videos have convinced me that I probably wouldn't like it. The views seem incredible, of course, but the over heating room, and the dirtiness, and the inability to sleep, and even occasional smell from the other bathroom, I'm pretty sure would result in me having a rough time.
If you are used to traveling in luxury and staying in nice places you probably wouldn’t like it. I’ve never really do this train wasn’t bad. I’m accustomed to camping and cheap hotels so this wasn’t too bad at all.
@@SideMoneyTom You did look pretty worn out at the end of the railroad trip, lack of sleep is never helpful. I don't travel in luxury, but I am a picky traveler, and I need a quiet place with a comfortable bed at an absolute minimum, and no issues with the temperature of the room. Thus ...
Took that route and was 40 hours over due once
We’re you at least in a sleeper and getting all the extra meals free?
@@SideMoneyTom nope in coach
That shower room is gross. You should've used the in room one
People poop in the in room one though…
You were in St. Paul, Minnesota - not Minneapolis. Amtrak does not stop in Minneapolis.
Thanks for the clarification, I’d never been before and they both seemed to mesh together into one big city
Yes, Minneapolis and St. Paul are one large metropolitan area together, but they each have distinct downtowns and unique cultures.@@SideMoneyTom
