Wow! I'm not surprised if Malaysia is the one of the best develop country among all Asian Nations, you can clearly seen that Malaysia is on their tracks to become The Most Best Asian Country like China, Singapore and South Korea. Well Done Malaysia! Love from UK 🇬🇧
Yeah, they have clearly stepped up in transport across Malaysia but it isn't enough. KTM Kommuter is still pretty bad and old and the trains still run pretty slow. The private companies like RapidKL seem to be doing pretty well in terms of Metro trains but KTM still has a lot of work to do.
Honestly, there is a lot of improvement need to be done and need a great management team to supervise everything. Like ETS service , in Japanese standard, it's a semi-high speed limited express and it's more than enough running around 140-160km/h in a meter gauge track. However, running at meter gauge track is quite a challenge so that's why maintenance is a must frequently , but then KTMB in my point of view still lack of frequent maintenance.
If you listen the ETS Class 93 frequently, the moment when it take off , you will feel some kind of very safe kind of feeling, not sure why but it does have a good music.

Very impressive looking trackbed....the ride must be very smooth. When did the KTM started to upgrade their mainline and how far are they in the upgrade process?
Philip Soon The electrified double tracking started way back in 1995 around the Klang Valley. Then around 2004 that was extended to Ipoh, with new UIC54 rails. About 2008 the double track started from Ipoh to Padang Besar and from Seremban to Gemas, which was completed in 2013. Now they are upgrading the 1995 Klang Valley tracks to current UIC54 standard. Track refurbishment projects are now ongoing in the East Coast Line (Gemas - Tumpat, single line though). A new double tracking project is now just started from Gemas to Johor Bahru.
I recall travelling between Butterworth and Singapore in May 2006 and did notice improvements along some sections of the mainline. Glad to know that there's serious effort by the govt to upgrade the rail network.
BTW, love your videos. Pity that the technology was not available to record the railway scenes of the '50s through to the '80s in the same quality as yours. Good job
Just subscribed from Australia. A question regarding through trains to Thailand. I know the passenger service swaps to SRT power at the border, do the international container freight trains do the same ? Or does KTM power go all the way to BKK ?
ROGER EVANS Thanks for the subscription :) There are no more through passenger trains from Malaysia to Thailand due to the questionable policy of KTM keeping only electrically powered passenger trains (ETS and Komuter) on electrified tracks. For the few through freight trains into Thailand, it's the same: SRT locos take over at Padang Besar.
Ok thanks. I won't go looking for KTM Toshiba's when I go to Thailand next ! Been photographing trains in Australia for 40 years and just starting to spread my wings a bit. Might be time to give Malaysia a look too
pls note that a electrified gemas-padang besar has rendered diesel hauled passenger train and night train obsolete, same thing in western europe as the extension of high speed rail are effectively killing night train
