Yes, it is possible. The hot leads from the pickups go to the outside contacts of the switch. The center contact of the switch connects to the volume pot. Generally in telecasters the bridge is grounded by the metal base plate of the pickup, via the mounting screws. The metal control plate connects the ground side of the output to the pots and the switch
Marc I am finally getting around to the wiring. I have all the wiring completed between the pots and have done that exactly like standard telecaster wiring ..[if I was using the standard telecaster 3 way switch]. I have a wire going to the hot leg of the jack from the middle leg of the vol. pot. I have also soldered the ground wire which would go to the jack from the top of the tone pot. I have ran and extra wire from the top of the vol pot and used that as a ground under the Tele bridge. NOW, When looking at the control plate upside down with the (box style) switch to the left and vol and tone to the right. My question is; where you to told me to connect to the vol pot from the center leg of the box switch, do I solder that to the lower leg of the vol pot just as you would do from a standard a tele style switch? Thanks very much your videos are all great!
First of all to the mantle of the output jack; and to anything metal that is close to but not actually part of the electronics (strings - via the bridge or tail piece, housings of potentiometers, the frame of the switch and any shielding if present).
Hi,, i got mini toggle switch ,6 pronged how do i connect the gibson standard wiring ? What wire goles to what prong in the toggle switch ,it has 6 pins and no ground obvisly it has a (chasisground) ,,hope u can help me ,i tried several forms of wiring and doesn t seems to work,,, thanks ,,,i can send u a photo if u want, ,
It depends on the type of switch you have; it should be on-on-on and there are two types of those which are mirror images. You should try to determine which contacts are connected to each other in each position of the switch.
Ok thx,, going to buy the classical toggle switch,, thas why i was asking if ,, i can send u a photo, cause i dont unos how to doit , dont hace a multimeter,, thax anyway...
@@xcorp21 You could use a battery and a small light, from a bicycle for example, and a bit of wire to check the connections in the switch. If it is an on-on-on switch the middle two connecters should go to the hot side of the output. One of each of the outside connectors should be connected to the hot lead of the pickups; if one of them is on the left, the other should be on the right (or the other way around depending on wether it's a type I or II switch). I am subscribed to your channel and have many of your videos in a playlist. This video is something that I am working on now. I am putting together a Telecaster and I have wondered if I can use a box switch with 3 legs, as in the picture on the right side as displayed in the video. The Tele is the standard 2 pups and I have a chrome control plate cover that has 3 holes. Could you tell me which PUP should go to what leg and would the bridge ground from the switch also. Thanks very much.
my electric guitar has a problem and that is that when I select a pill it stops ringing it will be that something broke I do not know I need your help my facebook Is Alberto Ávalos Díaz please help
No... he does a poor job for fellows who do not and will not understand a basic electrical diagram. He assumes too much and should realize many guys do NOT know anything about diagrams and basic guitar wiring. So stop and simplify it and just show what to do and skip all the theory and pronouncements. Look at all his questions about what to do! It is NOT clear what to do and most guitar players do not CARE about electronics. Skip this one.
The point of this video, and the series it is a part of, is to try to explain basic guitar electronics with some hopefully easy to understand diagrams; NOT just show what to do but show why to do it. Anyone not interested is more than welcome not to watch.
Sorry but this has to be the worst video on the subject that I've seen, videos like this are what makes RUclips a minefield. There aren't just 3 terminals on a 3 way toggle switch, most have 4, some have 5. It's easy to mistake the common lug for the ground, which is why I'm looking for a video about it.....oh well on to the next one.

What about grounding the switch?
Tanks so much all your videos are very helpfull God bless you my friend
Thank you. Really helped me.
Thank you, it's my pleasure.
your video is great....clear and easy to follow. tks much...
Ok Dracula... the guitar has six wires and the switch has six contacts. It looks like the one on then left end. Which wire goes were? NOT that simple.

Thank you very much. Your channel if very helpful and informative.
Thank you for the videos you rock!
Thanks! You're welcome.
Thank you
It has to be grounded. I have a separate video about grounding metal parts.
so where would the ground connection go ?

Could you be a little more specific? You select a pickup, it makes sound and then it stops? Most likely you need to clean or replace the switch.
