These older Shakespeare 2062 reels (and their little brother, the 2052) are fantastic older worm gear drive freshwater spinning reels. Super smooth cranking with a good drag setup (6 disk drag stack) and aluminum bodies. These are still great reels to use today. Unfortunately (due to cost) worm drive gear/pinion gear systems aren't used regularly anymore but they are the strongest setup for a spinning reel due to the amount of engagement area of the teeth between the drive gear the pinion gear. There are a few Chinese manufacturers making them but they are $200+ and not as well made overall as the older ones from the accounts that I have read. As an added bonus, they also are smooth with no feedback from gear mesh through the handle.

I was watching this again because it popped up on my RUclips feed. I have eight of the Shakespeare Sea Wonder reels and recently found and purchased two PUM conversion kits for the Sea Wonders. I converted a 2090 to manual line pickup and it turned out fantastic. I’m keeping the other kit intact as I want it for my reel collection. I know of no one who has ever seen these prototype kits or a PUM Sea Wonder spinning reel. - Chris
I have one of these and was surprised to find that a Penn 700 or 704 bearing works perfectly in this reel. You can’t beat a worm gear drive! Another good vintage reel video! I’ve subscribed to your channel because of these vintage reel videos. Thanks for doing them.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching!
Just found of these on a Shakespeare wonder rod.
Reel was totally froze up. Took apart cleaned and lubed. Got working like a new reel. Internals of this reel were very interesting.
Cleaned the pole and cork like new and then gave it away to a friend. When you get old giving is more fun than getting.
In the Shakespeare 2062 video you mention the leather drag washer . To my test carbon fiber washer. , teflon washers and leather washers. The leather is absolutely superior in stoping power and durability plus smotness. Wish to days reels had them.
Ricardo Garcia you could use leather punches to make some 👍
Beautiful reel - love those worm gears.
Thanks and me too! I use a Shakespeare 2052 (smaller version of this one) all the time. So smooth to crank and built to last. Thanks for checking it out!
This is dope.
When Shakespeare engineered the 2200 series reels in the early1970s they produced them in Japan. They were every bit as robust as the 2062. I bought my 2200 ultralight in 1971 and still use it. It's very smooth operating just like the 2062. You have to love those old Shakespeare reels that were built to last!
I have owned a few of the 2200 025 Sigma ultralight reels you mentioned. I did a video about one I sold as a matter of fact: ruclips.net/video/6c7kbE65TPk/видео.html
They are very good reels too but not as ruggedly built as the 2052 (smaller version in the same family of reels as the 2062). The Sigma line was and still is a very popular reel. The 025 commands high prices on eBay too. Both lines of reels are better than a lot of other reels on the market today in my opinion.
@@TheFishingHobby Actually Shakespeare made two different spinning reels that had the same 2200 model number. The 2200 Sigma is much different than my 1971 vintage 2200. I would rate my 2200 a much better reel than the 2200 Sigma.
I own that one too 😆
Have a look at this thread and scroll down a little bit and you'll see my post with a picture of 3 different Shakespeare models and you'll see mine. You are talking about the one with a metal side tag plate on the side that says Ball Bearing on it. @@TheFishingHobby Gotta love that old metallic green 2200. I gave one to my brother a couple years ago for his birthday. He liked my 2200 over the years so much that I thought he'd be really surprised to get a fifty year old reel as a present. I still use mine for crappie fishing and it's still mated to the vintage Berkley Cherrywood rod that I bought for it back in 1971.
That would be a nice pair for sure!
This reel has big and strong gear and bearing for life time
Yes it does!
I found a brand new spool for my 2052 on eBay like you said, took awhile to find it. I had to bid $25 to get it,but so worth it. If the plastic spool gets any rash it restricts the casting. Thanks again for your help. By the way has this reel sold yet?
Nick Sandoval congrats on finding one! Yes this reel has been sold. These old Shakespeare reels are so nice! I love the 2052, I may even try to machine up an aluminum spool for mine at some point.
The Fishing Hobby if you do machine an aluminium spool please to a drag cap aswell, than make at least 5-10 more and put them on eBay . This would perfect the reel 👌 please do it !!! If you ever do it my email is c8542780@hotmail.com.
I'm afraid they would be cost prohibitive to sell because it would take me hours to do each one, I think.
Great video ,I have one lovey reel , greetings from the uk
Thank you!
Nice, If I had It, I'd use It
Definitely still good user reels. I have had several, all equally well made. The smaller 2052 is one of my regular user reels.
I look like the 2052 also I grew up using it. I still have the matching purple pole. I'm going to fish it for the first time in 40 years this weekend. I would be interested in buying a aluminum spool or 2 if you sale them. Have you balanced a 2052 like you have the other real in your video?
Have you tried the zebco Cardinal 3? They are nice to! But much more expensive.
What rod do you fish your 2052 on? Are you in Arkansas? My grandfather is from lead hill
Yes, I do live in Arkansas! I don't have the original Cardinal 3 but I do have a few of the latter ABU C3's and the skirted spool Cardinal 3 which is the same as the C3. Awesome reels, probably the best mix of modern and vintage features in a reel I have found so far. Worm gear drive, all brass gearing, silent anti-reverse, a bail that can be closed manually, bronze bushings and one of the best drag systems any manufacturer has ever produced.
The rotor I balanced in that video was the 2052. I balanced it for fishing with manual pickup but ended up not liking that method of fishing, so I had to remove the weight after reinstalling the bail wire. The 2052 is undervalued IMO. They can often be found for $20 or less in nice shape. I managed to pick up my skirted spool Cardinal 3's for around $25 shipped but it took a while to get them at that price. They are well worth the $40-50 price they usually go for IMO. I plan on doing a video on them at some point.
Great video! Do the handles on these reels fold?
They don't really fold, but they will rotate to where the grip points in towards the reel body so that it doesn't stick out. There is a thumb screw on the back of the handle you loosen that allows the grip part to rotate. There is a pin in the grip arm and a v-notch in the handle. Loosen the thumbscrew and rotate the grip/arm 180° and seat it back into the v-notch and tighten the thumbscrew back up to lock it into the stored position.
These are fantastic reels and I would recommend them to anyone.
@@TheFishingHobby I've got one that I scored at a garage sale for my ice rod. $2.50 score! I saw the pin and notch but not the thumb screw that is usually on the opposite side of the reel. That chrome ferrule must be the thumb screw that you are referring to. I'm going to go out to the garage and see if I can get it to fold back so I can get it in my rod locker case with my tip ups. Thank you for the reply
Liked and subscribed! 👍
Yup that was it!
@@skalvenner congratulations on that bargain and I'm glad you got the handle rotated. Thanks for subscribing and tight lines to you 👍
Cool! Yes I have fished the Cardinal c3 s for years. If you ever need some parts reels I have a few. I recently started collecting and using the zebco and Abu Garcia Cardinal 3s I couldn't afford them as a kid or find them when I got the money but then found them on eBay. I'm thinking of trying a drag system for the Cardinal 3 from a company called hedge hog. Check it out on RUclips it's totally cool. You should make some custom stuff like they make for the 2052, I bet there would be a big demand.
My main reels I've used the last 20 years are shamano spirex, great reel with nice features like the Cardinal 3.
What part of Arkansas are you from
North Central area
The ebay page has expired. What was your price? What is a good price for that same reel prior to maintenance?
Thanks,
S.
I believe I sold that one for around $40.
I have picked up some of these reels for $10-$15 that were in serious need of servicing (dried out grease usually is the main issue).
@@TheFishingHobby thank you for your kindness in replying.
Vintage Orvis spinning reels the 100S , try to get information but nothing, eBay sells a few but are all rust never clean I don’t buy in those conditions is a shame . Sorry for the critic but is true . Please if you have any information let me know are they smooth or hard to crank.
I have tried the Orvis reels and didn't like them as much as the Shakespeare 2062. I have sold the one in this video but I see others for sale all of the time on eBay. Occasionally I see some that have been cleaned and are ready to use. They are very smooth reels to use. I hope you find what you are looking for!
The Fishing Hobby I have one 2062 in the condition as everybody like vintage but new never used. With your answer I understand the orvis. Regards
Can you help me out? Do you know anything about a Penn 711? Brown, not green or black.
I do not actually own any Penn reels. There are some I would like to have but haven't bought any yet. I would highly recommend this forum: alantani.com
You will find plenty of people there who will know all about them! I belong to that forum and use the same name there as my RUclips channel.
The Fishing Hobby Thanks. Go to that site often. I'll try it.
hi do u have this for sale ,how much,i ve got a 5052 and a guy broke the spin part of the handle,
I sold this one and do not have it anymore. I see handles pop up from time to time and some pretty cheap reels for parts too on eBay. You may want to set up a saved search so you will get a notification when new items matching your search are listed.
En que año se fabrico este reel??
Gracias por compartir
I believe these were made from the 1950’s into the 1970’s
i ment a 2052
mine doesnt work as good as yours
I cleaned and relubed this one. They work really well when they are maintained.
@@TheFishingHobby yea i watched your video for a bit then i tool it apart and cleaned it and it works perfect now other than the little lock to keep the spinner bar down i got to play with it i got mine from my grand fathers stuff he keeps in are barn my mom told him that i like hunting and fishing and he said he has a tackle for me and a couple of reals amd a deer antler mount
Awesome!
These vintage reels, once properly serviced, not just this Shakesphere, but the DAM Quicks, Mitchells, ABU , Zebco, and others, will outlast all of the modern current China production by these manufacturers a million times to one.
No doubt about it.
