    I didn't read Louis as drunk on vodka at all, I read Louis putting on an act for Morgan. he seemed more relaxed about interacting with his humanity than anything, not drunk! which seems to me to be the theme of this episode, Claudia completely detached from her old nature focused on finding equals while Louis is still trying!

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Месяц назад +30

      Perhaps, but I do think Louis seeks out (and experiences) the effects of alcohol deliberately, considering Lestat (aka Louis's inner guilt) also accuses him earlier in the episode of using German brandy as a way to deal with his guilt and denial.

After seeing season 1 I did finally read the first book last year and I know this might be blasphemy to some people but I like the show a lot more than the book. Louis in particular is a lot more likable and Sam Reid is just too good as Lestat ugh lol. David does not appear this season. If they decide to keep David, he'll likely appear in Season 3 in reaction to Lestat's rock concert (or whatever the show has Lestat do to get worldwide attention instead). I don't think they can make Daniel be in David's place at all, since Daniel's not Talamasca. He doesn't have any of the epic knowledge of vampires and the occult that David has. And we're allowed to have more than one (1) old man in this version!
      The flashback to young Daniel is in episode 5, and the actors have talked a lot in interviews about how intense that episode is. But nothing about any past relationship between Daniel and Armand, sadly. Daniel never could have grown to be old and successful if he'd been involved with Armand. It would have destroyed him, just like in the book.

    • @aeonlicious
      @aeonlicious Месяц назад +2

      @@MavenoftheEventide At the same time I do agree that is possible to have more than one old man in this version of Interview Of The Vampire, I too believe that the writers and producers, despite saying that they are faithful to the core of Rice’s universe, will merge two characters in one for budged, creativity reasons or even simple and plain shock value.
      Once more, this is my theory, and the sources are the voices inside my head, but Daniel being “at the end of the road”, sick, with his own body failing him, kind seems like a set up for him to become a vampire in the same or similar way David did in the Tale of The Body Thief further down the line.
      David and the Talamasca might also show up later, and I sure do hope so (after Armand, David’s my favourite Anne Rice’s character), but again, Daniel being aged up, plus his sickness and previous encounters with Louis and Armand makes me believe that some of David’s plot lines will actually be Daniel’s in this adaptation.

    I can’t stress enough how important your episode breakdowns are to me because you do them with so much care and attention to detail, it’s truly refreshing. Also every time you talked about a book reference I had completely forgotten about, I got more excited because as “memory IS a monster” sometimes no matter how much I reread IWTV, I tend to forget those little golden nuggets of story that are so precious and that make the experience of rewatching the episode all the more enjoyable. I found myself reaching for my copy of IWTV and marking them down.
    Do you think the show runners and writers should use ‘revenants’ in the future as possible victims of the events caused by Akasha or further down the line Amel or should they leave them as part of IWTV only?

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Месяц назад +5

      I don't think revenants could be a result of the events caused by Akasha/Amel. The whole reason Akasha kills off thousands of vampires when she rises is because there's too many vampires, which weakens Amel's strength in her, resulting in more and more of the new vampires turning out bad. So her slaughter of the vampire population would actually do the opposite, bring the vampires back to good, healthy strong vampires now that Amel's web of mysterious nano-particle tentacles aren't being stretched so thin.
      The show could bring the revenants back in in other ways, though. Maybe we could see examples of Armand's coven making a new vampire, where they bury them and only the ones strong enough to emerge on their own get to live. We could see the ones that fail, and how the coven slaughters them immediately (illustrating why there aren't more revenants out there in the world). Or perhaps with the great convergence, we'll see a bunch of them as the vampire population booms and the new vampires get weaker and weaker as Amel's power is stretched. Zombie vampires running all over the world, and then that's why Akasha will rise to destroy them all so that Amel's power can be concentrated again on only a few vampires.

    It's been too long and I'm happy to see you doing breakdowns for the show again. I have a question for you about Louis. I was thinking that maybe the show has given Louis Daniel's mental health storyline from the books. I agree with you that Armand seems to be trying to protect Louis from spiraling and his care for him reminds me of how Armand cares for Daniel in the books. I think we're still getting some nod to Devil's Minion because one of the clips for Season 2 shows Armand and Daniel looking very romantic together during the 1st interview. I'm curious to see what Daniel remembers from that 1st Interview and why Armand feels more like a caretaker than a spouse to Louis.

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Месяц назад +7

      I don't think Louis's mental health storyline is necessarily the same as Daniel's in the book. Other than Armand being involved, I don't really see any similarities at all. Armand even is handling Louis much differently (kind, gentle, cautious) than he handled Daniel in the book. Daniel was spiraling because he so desperately wanted to be a vampire, and it was denied him. Louis is spiraling because being a vampire/immortal is emotionally hard for him, especially with all he's been through. Two very different spirals. Now that I think about it, they pretty much all have mental health storylines in the books 😆
      As for the trailer clips you saw with Armand and Daniel in 1973, I can't talk about those yet until Episode 5 airs 🤐 I can't wait for you all to see it!

    • @bluboy4ver2
      @bluboy4ver2 Месяц назад

      @@MavenoftheEventide Okay that makes sense. I was only pondering it because I wonder if Armand in the show is taking care of Louis for Lestat like Marius cared for Daniel in the books before he eventually returned to Armand. Could Louis being in denial about wanting Lestat back be a coping mechanism because his guilt over losing Claudia has traumatically affected him seeking happiness with the one person he truly loves other than her.

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Месяц назад +4

      I don't think Armand in the show has any intention of turning over Louis back to Lestat. Even in the book, he has some bitterness over them being together later, because he thinks Lestat is bad for Louis, and Armand has always tried to protect Louis from Lestat. Armand has always wanted Lestat for himself, he sees them as two of a kind, deserving each other, but he thinks Louis deserves much better than Lestat. Armand can be gentle and patient and kind and soft with Louis in the way Lestat rarely ever seems to be in the mood to be (at least that Armand ever sees, he only hears the bad stuff and wants to rescue Louis from it).
      In the show, Armand does NOT want to be left alone and altruistically give Louis back to Lestat. He'd be devastated to lose Louis now. He can only say he's happy for the two of them in the books once he already has a whole family of his own (Benji, Sybelle, and Daniel back again). And even then, he still thinks he'd be better for Louis despite knowing Lestat is what Louis wants.
      I think what would make Armand happiest is if he could have both of them. If he could be their third as Claudia once once. That way he knows they both have what they each want most, that he's not keeping them from happiness, but he also still gets to be part of it. That would be his dream come true.
      But yes, Louis is definitely in denial about wanting Lestat back. Or rather, he knows he feels it, but he doesn't WANT to feel it. He wants that feeling to go away, and is trying to move on. We'll see if the show ever lets him succeed... 👀

    Wow, I thought I knew some Vampire Chronicles lore but you put me to shame! Definitely going to check out your other videos on this show because you went deep in the lore!
    There were a couple of bits that I thought played out as indirect references:
    Claudia ripping the soldier's heart out is something Pandora does in QotD.
    Daciana reminded me of how Gabrielle is described in modern times: she lives in the bush and doesn't really care what she looks like. Jumping into the fire happens a bunch of times in the books but I was also reminded of Magnus.
    I think Daciana saw a vision in Claudia's blood which happens in the books when weak vampires feed from strong ones. Claudia's blood shouldn't be that strong (it was established as weak in season 1) but then again they do mention that she's done a lot of feeding so I think it works.

Some time ago a fellow fan of the show vehemently defended the filmmakers' choice to show Louis, Lestat, et al, smoking in the show, claiming that the vampires smoke "on a regular basis" in the novels to appear more human when among mortals, but I cannot recall any instance of the vampires smoking.

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Месяц назад +5

      They absolutely do not! Your friend is misremembering. It was entirely the show's choice to add that in. I suppose in theory they could hold a cigarette and pretend to smoke it, trick the human's mind into thinking they're actually inhaling, same way they can pretend to eat or drink. But there is no actual example of this happening in the books. Only humans are ever shown smoking (like Daniel in the first book).

    Ahh, here we are again, it's like dusting off that toy car that only makes sense when the weather is good for top-down driving.
    I was reminded again in this episode that they have changed their powers, or at least their ability to heal, which is in some ways very inconsistent.
    I thought the 94' version handled the death of Lestat better in that we really think he is dead twice based on the damage taken. Daniel blows this up immediately, and so does Lousi's paranoia, which is a welcome revision.
    Isn't Armand convinced he is the oldest Vampire left? He's definitely miles weaker than Lestat, certainly at this point. After Magnus his maker, Lestat had that brief exchange with Those Who Must be Kept where he got a nice power-up. I wonder if we will see Lestat walking in the sun, I would imagine he can if Armand can.
    I like how we saw Daniel's compassion in that moment when Louis crying.
    I do love the Daniel, real Rashid stuff.

      "Old World" in this sense means eastern Europe/Transylvania specifically. The old folklore and mythology. • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Месяц назад +4

      In the show, it seems like he loves him like a possession. But based on the way the actors have talked in interviews and panels, it sounds like Lestat needed to "die," to be brought down to rock bottom, to even be capable of beginning to love Louis in a true pure way. So now that it's happened, when he rises from the "dead," hopefully we'll get to see that real love blossom and grow.
      He's not really dead, he's been buried in a dump for five years by the end of this episode, slowly healing off of the blood of rats. Who knows when he might be strong enough to escape and live again!
      In the books, it's real love from the beginning, though he is very young (only 30 when he meets Louis, unlike being 150 in the show) and he doesn't have healthy ways of handling his insecurities, resulting in their relationship being toxic at times.

    Now, I'm not saying this actually IS what's happening....but, it could be possible that Daniel didn't necessarily mean that Louis was _deliberately_ holding something back[, we already know that Louis has unconsciously avoided or held certain things back before that were too difficult or uncomfortable for him to want to confront or face], but even if Louis was deliberately holding something back he could be obsessing over getting the details of what he isn't holding back exactly right literally just to keep the focus on what he isn't holding back instead of going off the rails after whatever things/details he actually is holding back OR it may still be important enough to him to get all the details that he's not holding back exactly right specifically because he's already remembered a few other things wrong and if there is anything else he's getting wrong it would raise the question why he keeps getting things wrong and the answer to why could possible upend his entire reality as he currently knows it and having absolutely nothing to do with whatever or why-ever he intended to be there doing this interview for.
    But....honestly, I kinda didn't think when Daniel accused them of holding back in that particular moment that Daniel meant they were holding back about the specific part of the story Louis was recounting right then, I think he meant that they were holding something back something else more generally and/or about the first/previous interview or such. And I don't think he was wrong about that.

      In the books, they get back together again after Lestat reads the book Daniel makes of Louis's interview. Lestat then writes his own book, telling his side of things, and Louis reads it and then goes back to Lestat, and they're together again after that.
      BUT in the books, Louis and Armand broke up before the interview. In the show. Louis is still with Armand. So who can say how that will change him going back to Lestat or not?
      If the show gets a season 3, that will be when Lestat writes his book (or, probably gets interviewed by Daniel instead, is my guess), so once Louis hears or reads the story Lestat tells in season 3, that will be what makes him decide to go back to Lestat or not.

    I think it seems like Armand is trying to control the interview and keep Daniel from asking questions that might bring up more hidden or misremembered memories or story incongruities that Armand doesn't want Louis to remember or notice. I think Armand had to agree to let Louis read those journals because Daniel accused Armand of controlling Louis exactly like Lestat did, because Armand could see that not doing so would play right into Daniel's accusations, and Armand had to give some kind of a plausible explanation why he didn't just do so to begin with to keep Louis' suspicion at bay. I think it's specifically _because_ I know how conniving and manipulative Armand is in the books that I think there is more behind everything he's doing and saying here other than and/or not just what he claims.

The previous interview was in all accounts quite traumatic so it makes sense he doesn't have much patience. I think he'll come around to Louis this season especially after that scene in Episode 1. I think it's the first time since the scene in Episode 7 that Louis was being genuine... Not as if he was lying but he was so shocked about having that memory right that he forgot putting on his 'Oh, I am the bored and mysterious vampire' airs.
