In The Dark you can sometimes hear your own heart beat
Or the heart of the one next to you
The house settles down after holding itself up all day
Shoulder slumps, gives a big sigh
You hear no one's foot fall in the hall
That drip in the kitchen sink markin' time
June bug on the window screen can't get in but he keeps on tryin'
One way or another we're all in The Dark
    Fireflies, sparks, lightning, stars
Campfires, the moon, headlights on cars
The Northern Lights and The Milky Way
You can't see that stuff in the day
When the earth turns its back on the sun
The stars come out and the planets start to run around
Now they call that day is done
But really it's just getting started
Some folks take comfort in that
    And how dark is it
    It's too dark for goblins
    And how dark is it
It's so dark you can smell the moon
    How dark is it
It's so dark the wind gets lost
    How dark is it
It's so dark the sky's on fire
    How dark is it
It's so dark you can see Ft. Worth from here

    This song is a masterpiece.
I was driving home one day, and it was harvest time, so as the sun set across the fields, there was a faint haze that looked like gold dust fluttering in the air. Where I come from, the fields stretch for miles and miles, and the sheer vastness of the beauty around me was overwhelming. Point is, as I was driving on this beautiful day, this song started to play, and I realized just how lucky I am to be alive where I am with the people I have around me, and that in the span of history and time my life is a mere blink. It was an indescribable, spiritual moment that I'll never forget.
Guy Clark was truly a master craftsman and will be remembered forever as a genius of songwriting.

I don't mean to wear you out but if these types of beautiful story tellers move you, please give a listen to Shawn Mullins " Twin Rocks Oregon". It's funny ' cause I'm a 63 year old hard rocker but I love all beautiful music. I'm also very easily moved (big baby) and songs like these just get me busted up. As you get older you understand the soul in these masterpieces. Sometimes the simplicity of a story/song is powerful. Proof positive that sometimes less really is more! I'm very familiar with Townes Van Zandt.... Another Treasure, him and John Prime ( I remember everything is great). Bless you man!

Billy Joe Shaver "Window Rock" and James McMurtry "Ruby and Carlos"
      Happy Listening!

I wept all the way through listening to this song for the first time. Too beautiful for words.

Pure lyrical genius. Who could not be moved by this? Mr. Clark even used the astronomically correct description of "nightfall" -- "The Earth turns its back on the sun..." (Nope, the sun does NOT set, folks.) Amazing. Brilliant. A treasure.

So enchanting the words he speaks. No wonder so many folks love this song. Thank you for posting the lyrics
The chordal progression is > E-B-F#m...using B-A in the refrain.
I am definitely adding this to my campfire rotation.

Agreed. The album's opening song isn't bad, either. It's "Mud," and yes, it's literally about MUD and it's gorgeous, too. Guy Clark....
