    I used this drill all week at work, drilling 1/4" - 1" steel and it was excellent. It performed better than the Red & Yellow cordless drills in our arsenal .
    The digital clutch was easy to use and within a few minutes I had a good feel for the settings in both speed modes.
    The build quality of the GPH01 is superb with excellent fit and finish.
    This is a Top Pro Grade tool and easily the best drill I have ever used with 30 years in the Trades.

    Higher Voltage equals lower current draw, that's where the efficiency comes from. That's why I'm so angry with Bosch for dropping their epic 36 Volt line.

    Glad to see this tool reviewed by one of the 3 channels I use to make purchase decisions. I'm also glad to see they didnt go with the crazy long side handle like New Zealand version had in another review.
    I've been slowly and almost unconsciously moving away from 18v red tools as my primary ( except for impact wrenches, lights, and a couple of other tools). Sticking to just 18v and making minor tool changes, if any, then calling it a new version isn't going to cut it anymore red brand. The makita tools I have I absolutely love. Ive been selling off red and will be buying into this 40v line, starting with the drill.
    Thanks for another great review.

      I don't know if it works for other brands but on my DeWalt DCD 999 drill I was able to fix the ridiculously long side handle issue that it came with.
      I took the bolt from the side handle on one of my old DeWalt drills and then removed the spacer from the crazy long handle on the new drill and replaced the bolt with the shorter one.
      Within a few seconds it gave me a normal length handle. And if you don't have an old handle you can just go to the hardware store and get the appropriate length carriage bolt which is what the DeWalt uses.
      I rarely use the handle anyway and when I do I really don't need one that's a foot long or whatever.

    • @robertrada6040
      @robertrada6040 3 года назад

      You can likely disassemble the handle and cut the metal rod to length. The XGT version has a bind detect cutoff so you’ll probably never need the handle anyway. I hate the attachment mechanism that Makita, Ridgid, and now “Flex” use. So, I bin them anyway.

    • @actionjksn
      @actionjksn 3 года назад

      @@robertrada6040 even now that I've made my handle the appropriate links I never use that thing I've never used the one on my new DCD 999. but if I was doing a job that it would really help on I guess I would put it on I just don't normally need it. But yeah DeWalt lengthened theirs by adding a plastic piece and you can just remove it if you shorten the threaded Rod which is just a carriage bolt on the DeWalt or replace it.

    Just bought the hammer drill and impact driver combo yesterday. First thing I did with the hammer drill was put a large paddle mixer on it and mix drywall mud in a 5 gallon bucket. It's scary strong and had no problems. Speed 2 is almost too fast with the trigger fully depressed in drill mode for most applications. Didn't take long to get used to finding the sweet spots with the trigger to drill holes of various sizes from 1/8" to a 2" hole saw. The impact driver is impressive as well. Haven't tried any lag bolts with it yet but it pounds 3" deck screws all day as deep and you want to go. I have lots of LXT tools and batteries but I'll slowly make the transition over to the XGT line and keep my old tools as backups or loaners to family and friends.

      My fabricating son and heavy duty mechanic son in law have been abusing it and it is outdoing all of the other battery grinders+ they do plug it into the AC adapter for extended work-both said all the brands batteries on grinders eventually get too hot on extended jobs and kill battery longevity so being able.to plug in on those jobs is important

      I just picked up the Xph14 kit that has the hammer drill, impact driver 4x 5.0 batteries and 45 bits. I do have a lot of Makita 18v 5.0 batteries so it made sense to go with the 18v tools. I’ve never had a Makita drill or impact driver just Milwaukee and Dewalt drills and impacts. Both new to me Makita tools have made it really fun and comfortable again using a drill and impact plus less fatigue. I was going to initially pre order the Makita 40v hammer drill and impact driver kit, but I was worried that that the 2x 2.5Ah batteries weren’t going to be enough. It looks like the 2.5Ah will handle a lot more than I thought without dying.

    • @actionjksn
      @actionjksn 3 года назад +2

      @@akaredcrossbow you cannot compare the amps directly with 18 volt or 20 volt. When you double the voltage you only need half the amps to get the same capacity and performance. A 60v Flexvolt battery that comes with the dewalt drill is 2 Ah on 60 volt and 6 Ah on 20 volt.

      I would argue that the Metabo HPT 36V triple hammer is one of the best impact drivers made and it rocks on so many different situations that it is hard to beat. It depends on the work you are doing and if you want more speed to finish longer drives on fasteners.

    • @mak450
      @mak450 3 года назад +3

      I once saw me Metabo/Hitachi marketing reply on an instagram page that the real benefit of their 36v system is that the tool is less stressed, even if it is getting outpaced by an 18 or 24v tool, you're using less of your battery packs, and the tool stays cool longer. For Makita I think it's the same situation, at least when it comes to something like a drill or impact driver.
      There is a channel out of new zealand that has tested the 40V against the 18v, the Hitachi 36v and other impacts. They're not on a different planet, in fact the gen 3 will still outdrive it, so making it unwieldy due to excessive power isn't something either Makita or Hitachi has done.
      And of course, when they really want something to fly they just make a version that requires 2 batteries.

    One issue I see is you can't have a compact battery in a 40V configuration. Sure could Makita put some flat packs in there to hit 40V with a 1Ah compact battery. Yes, but they likely won't. Having a 3.0HO compact battery is nice. Also I believe they are bringing out a 4.0HO battery compact battery, likely with the 21700 40T cells, same as in the 8.0Ah. I get what Makita is trying to do is standardize the battery so it is backward compatible with all tools yard and on. Yet, I'm not really sold on that idea yet.

      Well, ya know, flex and Kobalt added one more cell to an 18-volt battery pack and call it 24-volts. Plus, they are like the industry standard now. No one can beat them. LOL. So, in all seriousness, the drill and impact compete with Metabo HPT. They have 36 volt tools that rock and they too have issues getting the message to the masses. They even have a wall adapter. So with so many great tools on the market, we still have a large group (Read that as HUGE) that say if it aint red, it's dead. Milwaukee makes good tools, but they are a marketing machine. No one markets like Milwaukee does and in simple terms, as long as Milwaukee is close in power, it wont matter unless some of these companies pay a lot of money in marketing (read Brain Adjustment) to get the masses to change brands.

    What you said in the first 10 seconds of the video is legitimately why Makita has stayed in the top 3 tool brands for as long as it has.
    When you make tools that work the way they're supposed to and are near indestructible, that alone will speak for itself and save you from investing billions in advertising. At some point in my life I'm probably going to make the full switch to Makita, as painful as that will be having been a Bosch enthusiast for so many years. They're products keep getting terrific reviews and I've never met or seen anyone with a Makita product in their hand that couldn't compete at the topmost levels of craftsmanship.
    It's all fun and games to have the newest "mainstream" red or yellow tool to tote around the jobsite....but when the metrics and specifications need to match the day in and out performance, Makita, in my opinion, seems to be the unsung hero of the big three tools brands.

      That 2.5 Ah is not even remotely comparable to an 18 or 20 volt tool. At the voltage it runs at that battery is roughly equivalent to a 5 or 6 amp hour battery.

    • @essentials1016
      @essentials1016 3 года назад

    • @actionjksn
      @actionjksn 3 года назад

      @@essentials1016 well of course a higher Ah has more current to draw from. That still doesn't change the fact that a 2.5 Ah battery at 40 volts is not similar to a 2.5Ah battery at 18 or 20 volts.
      The battery in this video is fairly large for a drill it's nothing like a 2.5 Ah at the lower voltage.
      After you get too big on a drill battery it just gets too big and heavy to lug around and use on a small tool like a drill.
      My DeWalt hammer drill has a 6 Ah flex volt battery and it does not look much larger than the battery in this video. By the way the 6 Ah flex volt battery in my drill is only rated for 2 Ah when it is run at 60 volts.
      The 2.5 Ah battery in this video would probably be 5Ah if it were run at 20 volts. Which is plenty big for a hammer drill.

    @actionjksn 3 года назад +3

    When you up the voltage you don't need as many amps. Nor can you really have as many amps in the same size package. My 60 volt battery on my saw is 9 amp hours on a 20 amp tool and only 3 amp hours at 60 volts. And as you know that thing has plenty of capacity.
    On my drill the 6Ah battery is only rated for 2Ah when used on a 60v tool and that is also a very big battery.
    If I was not already invested in the DeWalt platform I would totally use Makita. There is nothing out there that is enough of an improvement to be worth switching when I have this many tools.
    By the way on these huge drill bits with the wet wood you need to back off of that thing and give it time to cut. You testing guys crowd these tools way too much.

      Juan, I would have to bring them both out side by side in the same wood. Our wood is such crap these days! Some of it is just too sappy to get a good feel. The Dewalt stuff is not as refined, but might have power that is in the same ballpark.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  3 года назад +3

      @@willng34 Refinement comes from the motor and trigger and how they respond together. Many tools, especially brushless do not like to work well, or be controlled, at very slow speeds. Makita will. The VST is excellent and does not step the motor up in speed, you can work it up slow and feel the trigger pushing the motor. The rubber over-mold is grippy and the ergonomics are perfect. Dewalt has a more hard rubber over-mold and it is not everywhere it needs to be. There is a difference in feel, fit and finish. Does everyone need it? No. Take a battery out of a Milwaukee tool and it can stick, be very tight, or actually be loose. Makita batteries fit perfectly and the batteries have a gloss finish on the top to help them slide out easily. Dewalt, Milwaukee, hilti are all great brands, but none of them engineer products like Makita. Milwaukee is a marketing machine more than a tool company. Does that make sense?

    Only issue is weight/cost of batteries. Higher Voltage is achieved by using the same mass produced cells...just more of them. Hence why the 2.5 AH is the size of a much larger AH 18v.
    Cant imagine how monster of a size a 7.5 AH or something would be..not to mention cost from all the cells.
    Good thing is that higher voltage is lower current draw...so technically less heat and wear so the batteries should last longer....
