How Did Engineers Fix London's Wobbly Millennium Bridge? | Massive Engineering Mistakes

- When The Millennium Bridge in London was launched in 2000, the engineers' main purpose was to create an innovative piece of design to celebrate the new millennium. However, after two days after its opening, the bridge had to be closed. The problem? It started to swing dramatically putting people's lives in danger.

A wise man learns from his mistakes but a wiser man learns from others
When you study engineering online during covid:
6:30 And then the people sway to counteract the sway and everyone starts to over sway.. That’s just the sway it is mate!
8:12 simple, effective and logical.
Skip the faff and go to 7:50 for the fix.
Of course, the movie had to feature a few black men and women who had nothing to do with build - just to eliminate white men.
Thanks
They had to fix it in the first place because the Death Eaters destroyed it
From mistakes we understand greater truth.
so courageous of Roger to come on camera !!
If only our government was as stable as this bridge is now.
this bots...
I love how at 5:35 she's holding a left handed guitar in a right handed position lol
Allow it mate, she just wanted to demonstrate a point, not playing it.
@@alexchannel3187 I'm just baffled as to how they ended up only having a left handed guitar to do that shoot, surely someone there noticed, and as we know leftie guitars are a lot less common. It must have been an odd series of events that led to getting that guitar for that shot.
And is out of tune
They should've had her break out into Under the Bridge
Very interesting
Charleston needs one over the Cooper on the south side of the current bridge
Most of this engineers studied civil engineering postal course
Tuned mass dampers are fascinating components.
one in an earthquake actually moving is insane
They were even used in F1 cars...
before they got banned
i came from crash course with the woman
Which one? There are two women in the video.
Designed not to ruin the view of the Thames 😅
"All troops must break step" would be awesome to have fucking everywhere instead of them bridges cause the entire marching in step thing is a damn chore
I imagine they were really pissed they didn't do a rented crowd test before the opening.
Trump wasn't running for president yet this was not invented yet
can not believe experienced engineers do such a stupid mistake,
I came here to understand the concept of systematic risk in finance. This is such a resemblance.
I wonder if a cruise ships dampening system, that reacts to cancel out sway, could be used to eliminate bridge sway issues? Water tanks on either side of a section of bridge could work passively or actively.
We'd need to treat the bridge as if it had several sections with a dampening system for each one. Perhaps all the tanks could be linked together so the water weight is shared and could be redistributed as needed?
The presence of water ballast tanks on a bridge section would already provide some dampening of vibration as it would simply be absorbed by the water inside the tanks. But once sway was introduced the water would resist that sway while an active gyroscopic system could respond faster and more precisely.
Some people also need dampers to absorb their negative energy and vibrations. Hint-hint for someone looking for a start-up idea :)
The sway had the potential to get you even better views of the Thames, right from the water. Just sayin'.
How to put a positive spin on a major design error.
This is what happens when you focus more on "Modern Design" over practicality
Lol, what about that's a new learning! And it looks so smart and it's damn practical.
@@radicalpotato666 It looks shit... suits London though
Blame it on the Death Eaters from Harry Potter!
It's been a long time and several comments make this reference. What did the DE do to a bridge?
They only named one of the people on the video. Who are the others?
Probably by the same engineers going back to school!
London Bridge is down
Why are there still hundreds of people walking on the bridge when it was swaying, if i saw a bridge swaying that much i wouldnt get on it.
You seen the cost of living in London? They were gambling on surviving the collapse and getting a nice compensation claim in 😂
@@Jonathan_Doe_ If I lived in London, I'd be a Lemming too
5:35 the guitar is upside down......
The death eaters knocked it down
This the bridge from Black Mirror?
when it starts to sway and the people are also swaying with it is just.. bro it's just dumb.. please, humans, THINK.
BSABE 1-A MOMA

Simple solution that costed £5m..
Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Structure was "Styled" before it was engineered, first and foremost you engineer a structure, engineer from first principles, (you cannot beat the Laws of Physics), then you let the "Stylists" loose on the structure, or better still , tell them to keep their sticky little fingers off the creation of an Engineer.
This is what Melbourne was doing today
Bridge engineers are paid peanuts comparing to their European colleagues for their hard work and getting extensive education. The throat cutting bidding processes force the wages down and this does not encourage the brightest young minds to enter this field. Therefore, UK bridges are being designed by average (and few brilliant passionate) engineers. Unfortunately, I anticipate more serious problems in the future.
British: Spot major problem with bridge, close it for a year and a half, only reopen it after a solution has been found and properly tested with thousands of people.
Chinese: Spot potential problem with bridge, ignore it, see potential problem become reality, blame someone else, watch bridge collapse.
Say what you want about the time it takes the British to do things, but at least there is usually an emphasis on safety.
We've seen bridges collapse all over the world, so why are you so obsessed with Chinese bridges? They may have had more collapsed bridges than some other countries, but given the size and terrain of the country, (plus the occasional earthquake or major flooding), they surely have more bridges and so a higher figure is to be expected.
And they also blew it up and it fell in the Harry Potter movies.
Loved this interesting phenomena. I also liked that there were woman engineers contributing to the topic. Great work!
Notice in this video how the male engineers are the ones who didn't account for the feedback loop (greater swaying with greater steps), but the female engineers are the ones who explain what they didn't account for 😂 "I told you so"
Bridge are dangerous since 1200 years a go.....
I ll never sign for a project like this.
U have trust at least 100 people work with you.
Really think I should've studied engineering..... Hindsight 🤷🏼♀️
Listen to your parents, kids. Lol
Wobble wobble ;)
普物仔簽到==
I dont know how they did it and quite frankly I really don't care...............
Misleading video… The original team of engineers did not save their reputation at all - did not get a chance. Other company (Atkins) did come up with the solution, but officially they can’t talk about for some reason.
What a condescending documentary (if you can call it that). I'm going back to Grady.
This is so overdramatic
chinese glass bridge brought me here
Gec students , attendance here
Pretty good doc, but seriously, what is with this new trend of inserting scripted "interviews" 🤡
LOL shtty bristish construction.
It looks beautiful? it honestly looks fugly. What a total waste of money.
Why didn’t those clowns know any of this before they designed the damn bridge 😡
Of course, the movie had to feature a few black men and women who had nothing to do with build - just to eliminate white men.
Who is the female Asian "expert"?
We'll never know!
Idk why they used a dirty poon on cover
