That was such a masterful introduction to looking at Akhenaten's reign from a social political perspective instead of a religious one. While it was couched in religious terms and themes it seems that has gotten all of the attention and not the political and social powers and changes that were a part of it. Also great generalizing to modern contexts. We and ancient Egyptians are still humans and still act similarly especially when it comes to social change and power.
I love Dr. Cooney. She is always so fascinating! She is also a frequent guest on the Craig Ferguson hosted late late show. Which I recently found her visits on the Jay Leno fly. I knew her from Mythvision and was happy to see her on a talk show. How many T.V. talk shows have brilliant scholars on them? We once had Carl Sagan, then Neil Degrasse Tyson. But Dr. Cooney should be another of these brainy stars!
@@Uncanny_Mountainfascinating theory, but how do you provide evidence for it? Edit: Btw I don't think Israelites are/were monotheists.. rather henotheistic.
He had to leave Thebes because they believed that each town belonged to a particular god. He had to claim a new land that had never belonged to a god. That is why he founded Amarna. By the way, I agree with David Rohl, that Akhenaten was a contemporary of King David.
Super conversation. I think the evolution of Mediterranean and Mesopotamian theological culture is looking more like a plate of spaghetti than clean lines of development by each feudal group.
First of all, the historicity of Moses is so close to zero that even talking about the invention is pointless. Aten was not a new deity but was an aspect of Ra long before Akhenaten and before his father. The prominence of Aten started around the first heb sed festival of Amenhotep III and Akhenaten simply ramped that up. The artistic style also started to evolve during the reign of Amenhotep III, and the most stylized depictions of Akhenaten started from the beginning of his reign and evolved into more realistic, even modern depictions during his latter years. Lastly the two words "Bible" and "Archaeology" should NEVER be put together, since Archaeology isn't interested in apologetics.
It irritates me that they assume that everyone watching this is an ignoramus who thinks Akhenaten was an alien or something. I have studied this time in Egypt since childhood.
I think he was ridding the kingdom of the totally corrupt priesthood and I can't think of a better representation of the almighty as the sun....light ....energy
I've always wondered if there was a connection between Akhenaten worshiping ONLY the Aten because he saw something during the Exodus. The "Spirit of the Lord" and the "Glory of the Lord", the 2 objects, one the "pillar of fire" that shone light over the Hebrew camp all night while the "Red Sea" parted, and the other which flew around fighting off the Egyptian army all night, shooting out flames that took off the wheels of the chariots. Imagine experiencing that alongside your father, Thutmose III, who may possibly have been the pharaoh of the Exodus (his eldest son, Prince Thutmose, suddenly disappeared from historical records, resulting in Akhenaten becoming pharaoh in his place ala the "Passover"....?). Then he sees this "sun-disc" god in person, sees the power it has to wipe out their entire army, then suddenly he decides "this is a REAL god!", and rejects all other gods. The question is, did this event really happen? If so, in my opinion, this explains everything.

Exactly. It's funny to see these European scholars go on about Egypt without considering the overwhelming evidence of the link between the ancient Egyptians and the rest of Africa. Amazing and very telling

WoW, dr. Kara I see you. Yes, I see you! A really good educational clip, g00D jOB!!!
Why do we consider the Israelites monotheistic, when in the Bible there’s references to other devine beings?
To promote the idea that the Israelites were the first to invent the monotheistic religion doctrine.
Dont mind them my dear, Isrealites only became monists in the mid 2nd century BCE.😊
Moses was Arkenaten, he became Dionysis, Son of Isis
David is Rameses II
Joshua is Tutmoses III

From certain depictions I have gathered that Akhenaten worshipped the light of the sun, not the flaming orb in the sky.
"authoritarianism" is such a crass frame of reference. This is a modern paradigm being shoehorned into an ancient system.
Do tell, please...has Akhenens body been positively verified? Was Nefertiti Smenhkare?
Akhenatens physical portrayal is reminiscent of Stone Age Venus statues.
Because he had just one god, he felt he had to be all gods rolled into one.

You need to get out to Africa a little more and see the African people. Maybe that will clear up that picture image you’re talking about.

One of the rules of Egyptology is don’t admit ancient Egypt (ancient Kmt) is a Black African civilization.
@@oseiosei6649 yes, they must maintain the fiction to get funding for research and to get published
Ancient Egyptians were not black. DNA is pretty solid evidence, apart from common sense
