It makes sense from a casting standpoint; general audiences might not believe him in that kind of role, even if it’s unconscious. That “might” is enough to put casting directors off when all that money (and their jobs, possibly) is on the line
And a good actor. It bummed me out that he didnt sound like Frank Castle or Shane Walsh. And then I was like oh yeah, those were characters and hes an actor. Jon is the best, I love everything I've seen him in so far.
This interview was way better than the one with Howard because they let Jon actually answer the questions rather than cutting him off every two seconds.
I love how honest he is and how he doen't go on to diregard the victims stories. I love that he validates the probability of the existance of those people being monsters for others.
As a theater actor who’s worked with people who have worked around stars on projects, I hear a lot of surprising stories that make me sick. It’s so much easier to be respectful and professional. So glad Jon seems like a great guy truly one of my idols
Everyone's going off on Jon like the question was "do YOU give him a pass?" (which he said it would be wrong to give him a pass). The question was did HOLLYWOOD give Polanski a pass. When Jon refers to it being a "different time", he's not implying that because it was a different time, he should get a pass. He's referring to Hollywood (which is the whole point of the fucking question) as a whole, giving him a pass when the incident occurred because not many people spoke out against influential people during that time. So people (Hollywood)(as in, ya know, not Jon) might have given him a pass for that reason. Unlike today's predators being exposed, it was a DIFFERENT TIME. Also, nowhere does he say that Polanski's personal tragedies make it okay to do what he did. But his tragedies may have made Hollywood (again, not Jon) take it easier on him as opposed to others. He could have been a bit more emphatic about not giving him a pass, but he clearly says he doesn't. Fuck, people, listen before criticizing the dude.
Dude. Jon Bernthal is so fucking real and legit. Seriously Immense respect for this guy. Level headed, light hearted, yet serious when he wants to be. I hope more up and coming actors have his vibe.
I love Jon Bernthal, thank you for having him on the show. Loved him on TWD, miss him there as well. He has gone on to do a lot of really good things since as well. I really enjoyed the interview.
I truly like this guy as an actor I have since I seen him on The walking Dead but I think he tells people what they want to hear. I would bet he has done alot of the things he is saying needs to change because no way he acts parts with never tapping into that place and he has to have been there before to tap onto it for some of the roles he has played
“Oh fuck, my wife was butchered to death, guess I’ll anally rape a an adolescent”....no John, no. The murder of Polanski’s wife is not a justifiable reason for what Polanski did to that girl. That’s sick.
As a fan of him from what I've seen, mainly the punisher tbh I'm glad it seems he would think differently about working with Polanski now. Yeah yeah, his victim now forgives him, but the guy drugged and raped a 13 year old girl when she was also saying no, crazy people just seemed to forget that, and he didn't even face justice for his crime, he fled and then made out it wasn't a big deal what he did. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of ppl who would want a person dead if they raped their 13 year old daughter. Can you imagine in 30 years time giving R Kelly a standing ovation for winning a Grammy for a new album, or applauding Harvey Weinstein for creating a new successful movie studio that produces more Oscar winning movies
He didn't really back Polanski tho? He just said that at that point in his life, when he was just scrounging around for a way in to the film industry, he was happy that someone gave him a way in. That doesn't mean Jon Bernthal's a bad guy he was just focusing on his own career.
I stopped watching after Carl was killed, having been reading the books since they debuted. I gave it another chance when my fiance wanted to watch it, and ended up watching thru until Rick left the show. Shane would fit right in with what I watched up through, he was just ahead of the curve in the beginning, and Laurie fucked with his head too much.
Bernthal seems like the kinda guy who was a small build nerds best friend and kicked the shit out of all the bullies, or instilled enough fear that nobody ever tried it in case he caught wind
Kubrick could collaborate. He asked Malcolm McDowel if he knew any songs after realising the home-invasion scene was missing something. He also gave R. Lee Ermy a license to say whatever the fuck he wanted. He wasn't known for his collaboration such much as his absurdly brutal methods, though. Doing so many takes that it literally drove people to tears, emotionally abusing Shelly Duvall to induce genuine hysteria on camera, wilfully nearly blinding Malcolm McDowel for a pick-up shot, foot-down DEMANDING an accurately coloured table in a black and white film. The guy was a nut. Talented and intelligent but a fucking nut.
I agree! He's cool and refreshing. I really like him, but at that moment he was really looking out for his career and threw morality right out the window. Jon had no problem throwing Spacey under the bus. Kevin Spacey is done, he has no bearing on Jon's career. Polanski, on the other hand, is still a prominent figure in the film industry, but Polanski sexually assaulted a minor just like Spacey did! But, Jon switched up his tune when talking about Polanski. I understand he doesn't want to put his foot in his mouth and prevent himself from getting work, but come on.
As much as I grew to dislike Shane, I definitely respected JB. He sold it the whole way through and I really liked him on "Snitch". Solid actor for damn sure and it's good seeing him seem like a down to earth dude. I'm glad he's doing so so successful now 👊🏾
Came here from a Joe Rogan pc clip where they said he shat on Kevin Spacey despite being the 8th lead. I didn't see that. He say's he lost respect for Spacey on set after idolizing him and that he never saw conduct equivalent to the allegations. Also points out that Polanski shouldn't get a pass, after he himself gave him one early in his career. Sounds like someone with regrets and a decent view. I'm not even a fan
he said he wouldn't give him a pass. opinions on someone as a person and their talent are two different things. he's not saying what he did was ok, everyone here is acting like his just another sheep
James Connolly OI moron, allegations are exactly that, allegations. we live in a society of innocent until proven guilty. Not guilty until proven innocent, so if at the time there was this one allegation it would be stupid to not do something because of it, what if it was a lie? false allegations happen, so to take it as fact without it having a court date is foolish.
I’ve liked Jon Bernthal for a good long while, since Walking Dead. - After listening to this interview... fuck yeah. Officially one of my favorite actors now; I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Omg wen I was watching the 1st bit I thought it was years ago, but then they mentioned the punisher and I was like, wooooaaah, he looks so young there, no way he looks 41😍🤤
I've met a lot of cool fucking people from Hollywood, Jon Bernthal came off and one of the most REAL people and I love that he's gone on to do so many other projects that I enjoy watching....and Rick is Raising his Daughter. Jus' Sayin'
I don't know, man. I think it's really odd that one of Kevin Spacey's best movies is The Life of David Gale which is about a man who goes through a kind of character assassination thing after being wrongly accused of sexual misconduct. It's ironic that he's facing that kind of situation yet this time apparently deservedly so.
JIM: "Do you feel that Polanski gets a pass from Hollywood?" JON: "Well, ummm, he's ummm, it was a different time, ummm the victim forgave him after all, ughhhh, 13 wasn't THAT young back in 1977, ummm, she wanted it more than he did, ummmm, I don't want to get in trouble with my Hollywood masters, ummm."
Sam, that was a really funny joke about jon's nose in the beginning.. How they unconsciously rub their noses or something. Top notch stuff right there... Jeez..
They should make a parallel universe spin off of The Walking Dead in which Shane kills Rick and takes over. Because we all know it in reality that is how it would have been :D Also it would give us more of this brilliant man's acting to enjoy (No homo :) Cheers
klipser66 Why do you say "no homo"? As if saying you enjoy his acting would imply you're gay.. he is a fantastic actor, though. One of my favorites working right now.
Where I come from men never praise other men, also just by saying you enjoy acting would also make you gay here. It's kind of an inside joke if you will.
Oh yeah it's horrible. Just kidding, the place is beautiful (Croatia) and people are too. They sometimes act tough, but in the end are loving, caring and welcoming to everyone. It is just part of the folklore, no big deal.
I know. He unintentionally talks like his only problem is with behaviour at work. Spacey's a creep on set, now POLANSKI, that guy was a fucking pro. Kept HIS rape at home.
What an awesome actor and man. Def had favorites all through my life but rn it's him. Since I saw him shoot that mofo in the leg on the walking dead. The man just acts so raw.
What you call stead fast rigger regarding our 2nd amendment stance is what we call principle. There are 1000s of gun laws on the books, we have more than met you all half way. Gun control doesn't work unless its intent is to make slaves.
Nothing is wrong with his nose and ears. He is very attractive and a great actor
KitKatze Very Jewish looking tho and he had the nose of Rocky Marciano (an old boxer). In a huge fan of Jon but I see what he means
It makes sense from a casting standpoint; general audiences might not believe him in that kind of role, even if it’s unconscious. That “might” is enough to put casting directors off when all that money (and their jobs, possibly) is on the line
His face is proportional to me, and works very well!!
Actors/entertainers are more insecure and have more mental health problems than most other professions.
You know you like an actor when they sound like a dude you'd meet at a bar and become friends with. This guys so real and transparent
Transparent in the sense that he showed that Hollywood ethics is total bs, otherwise he shouldn't have to search for excuses for Polanski.
I was a PA on a Bernthal film called Day Zero - he was totally cool and I am so happy that his career is taking off- cannot wait to see The Punisher
That was a good movie
Awesome!!!
Glad to hear it’s not just an act, he seems like such a good dude in this interview
Such a cool dude.
duribe1000
He really IS A COOL DUDE! I AGREE👍😄🐥
darryl johnson Lol one comment ultimately defines a person makes him the biggest piece of shit on the entire earth. Lol yea ok.
Agree
And a good actor. It bummed me out that he didnt sound like Frank Castle or Shane Walsh. And then I was like oh yeah, those were characters and hes an actor. Jon is the best, I love everything I've seen him in so far.

This interview was way better than the one with Howard because they let Jon actually answer the questions rather than cutting him off every two seconds.
I can hardly watch Howard clips bc of that shit.

br33zyb0y1 this comment deserves more attention. God, some of these idiots in the comment section are just, well, idiots. 😂
Dude.
Jon Bernthal is so fucking real and legit. Seriously Immense respect for this guy.
Level headed, light hearted, yet serious when he wants to be.
I hope more up and coming actors have his vibe.
Gosh, you can't NOT like this guy!
Zoe Tuinman language!
@ maybe you should have included ranch.yeah?
@ and I was just joking
He’s very humble and gracious.
Yep
Absolutely loved Jon Bernthal. He seems like such a cool, genuine guy. Great interview.
I love Jon Bernthal, thank you for having him on the show. Loved him on TWD, miss him there as well. He has gone on to do a lot of really good things since as well. I really enjoyed the interview.
Love this dude, he seems like such a real dude
Brilliant guy. He gets so much across on screen in such a short amount of time. One of the best supporting actors out right now.
I truly like this guy as an actor I have since I seen him on The walking Dead but I think he tells people what they want to hear. I would bet he has done alot of the things he is saying needs to change because no way he acts parts with never tapping into that place and he has to have been there before to tap onto it for some of the roles he has played
He's a very good looking dude. I can't believe he had problems with his looks.👍😎
“Oh fuck, my wife was butchered to death, guess I’ll anally rape a an adolescent”....no John, no. The murder of Polanski’s wife is not a justifiable reason for what Polanski did to that girl. That’s sick.
He's not saying he's justified, he's saying he's been through trauma that's damaged his brain, and he couldn't control that.
He has the nose of a Greek and jawline of a super hero like a total badass, I know many women that think he’s sexy, even after Shane
Yes
He didn't really back Polanski tho? He just said that at that point in his life, when he was just scrounging around for a way in to the film industry, he was happy that someone gave him a way in. That doesn't mean Jon Bernthal's a bad guy he was just focusing on his own career.
Henry Wilkin he said he wouldn't give someone like that a pass and that he wasn't a father
Still the best walking dead character even 9 seasons later 💪
Agreed bro. Shane was always my favorite. Even now.
@14:48 he slips into his punisher voice
60 seconds in and I realise how good of an actors jon is.
Bernthal seems like the kinda guy who was a small build nerds best friend and kicked the shit out of all the bullies, or instilled enough fear that nobody ever tried it in case he caught wind
Man crush, what a good dude
I'd pick Jon over Brad Pitt any time, any time
I like his personality and that's hard to beat
And he’s like 20 years younger than brad pitt
Kubrick could collaborate. He asked Malcolm McDowel if he knew any songs after realising the home-invasion scene was missing something. He also gave R. You've got geniuses who are nuts. And you've got nuts trying to be geniuses.
Kubrick was a complete dick to Shelly Winters. I've since I've read about that, I've refused to watch anything he made.
He's a chill dude
This dude is an incredibly great communicator, don't sleep
I was with him 110% until the Polanski comments. No "it was a different time", "the woman forgave him, that must count for something". No, no, no.
TaylorBlevinsable
Jon is refreshing and GENUINE! COOL DUDE!!! He said NOTHING out of line AT ALLLLLL
"No no no".
That's someone from Hollywood right now
I agree! He's cool and refreshing. I really like him, but at that moment he was really looking out for his career and threw morality right out the window. Jon had no problem throwing Spacey under the bus. Kevin Spacey is done, he has no bearing on Jon's career. I understand he doesn't want to put his foot in his mouth and prevent himself from getting work, but come on.
If you ask him when Polanski, say, is trashed, he might throw Polanski under bus as well. Let's praise him for his honesty when he DOES take risk.
It was 40 years ago. Forgiven by the legal system, forgiven by the victim. Why would Bernthal not do it? Fuck off with your BS outrage.
I love Jon! Thank you for uploading this
As much as I grew to dislike Shane, I definitely respected JB. He sold it the whole way through and I really liked him on "Snitch". Solid actor for damn sure and it's good seeing him seem like a down to earth dude. I'm glad he's doing so so successful now 👊🏾
Connor RK900- Then he went on to defend Polanski and ruined it.
Came here from a Joe Rogan pc clip where they said he shat on Kevin Spacey despite being the 8th lead. I didn't see that. He say's he lost respect for Spacey on set after idolizing him and that he never saw conduct equivalent to the allegations. Wow, he seems like such a level-headed down to earth dude. I know have more respect for him.
*now
he said he wouldn't give him a pass. opinions on someone as a person and their talent are two different things. he's not saying what he did was ok, everyone here is acting like his just another sheep
Eysic Torres People have selective hearing and that pisses me off
''It was a different time''
''He suffered a lot of trauma.''
I'm pretty sure it's you two with the selective hearing.
James Connolly
Then he follows up with "we shouldn't give him a pass" jeez dude you just proved our point....
No, he gave him a pass by working with him when allegations were out about Polanski way before he worked with him. So no, you proved my point. Gg.
That one guy in the front just smile and stuff🥲🤣🤣
I’ve liked Jon Bernthal for a good long while, since Walking Dead. - After listening to this interview... fuck yeah. Officially one of my favorite actors now; I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Jim Norton talking about Martin Scorsese not knowing he was gonna be in The Irishman.
RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
"I'm a better father than you Riiiick"
Great man. Also, that hair. A+
Criticizes Spacey but remembers working with Polanski fondly? ok.
Such an amazing actor and person.
Omg wen I was watching the 1st bit I thought it was years ago, but then they mentioned the punisher and I was like, wooooaaah, he looks so young there, no way he looks 41😍🤤
Shane and The Punisher.. One of the best TV careers of all time
Who knew that the dude that played Shane and the Punisher was so damn cool.
And I feel like he actually is the Punisher in real life. They couldn’t have found a more perfect person to play Frank Castle.
Kevin Spacey bad! Polanski ok. -Jon Bernthal
I love how absolutely real he is. Him and Shia labouf are my favorite actors.
Shia??? Lmao dude that guy is a fucking moron and a bully.
Watch Jon interview him
I wish the old O& A and Jim was around to lay into Jon Bernthal about his human emotion regarding people accidentally falling into bullets
He talks like he is effortlessly humble, I really like this guy
I've met a lot of cool fucking people from Hollywood, Jon Bernthal came off and one of the most REAL people and I love that he's gone on to do so many other projects that I enjoy watching....and Rick is Raising his Daughter. Jus' Sayin'
I was hoping john would say people called me an "said when you said he rubbed you the wrong way, what did you mean by that"
I don't know, man.
I think it's really odd that one of Kevin Spacey's best movies is The Life of David Gale which is about a man who goes through a kind of character assassination thing after being wrongly accused of sexual misconduct.
It's ironic that he's facing that kind of situation yet this time apparently deservedly so.
This dude is such a legit good guy and takes zero bullshit and says whats on his mind. 0 fucks given. might be my new favorite actor
I thought the whole rubbing his head thing was part of the Shane character but he's done it several times lol
Seeing him in a normal setting highlights just how good he was as Shane. He's nothing like Shane *at all* .
such a awesome human being
an*
I Love this guys energy
JIM: "Do you feel that Polanski gets a pass from Hollywood?" JON: "Well, ummm, he's ummm, it was a different time, ummm the victim forgave him after all, ughhhh, 13 wasn't THAT young back in 1977, ummm, she wanted it more than he did, ummmm, I don't want to get in trouble with my Hollywood masters, ummm."
He said he wouldn't give him a pass he obviously doesn't want to be blacklisted
Anally raped her at that @@somerealnews6312
Impossible not to respect this guy
@14:44 great moment of self awareness.
Sam, that was a really funny joke about jon's nose in the beginning.. How they unconsciously rub their noses or something. Top notch stuff right there... Jeez..
And every joke you tell leaves people gasping for air? Get over yourself.
They should make a parallel universe spin off of The Walking Dead in which Shane kills Rick and takes over. Because we all know it in reality that is how it would have been :D Also it would give us more of this brilliant man's acting to enjoy (No homo :) Cheers

Where I come from men never praise other men, also just by saying you enjoy acting would also make you gay here. It's kind of an inside joke if you will.
you must be from some fucked up place then
Oh yeah it's horrible.
Just kidding, the place is beautiful (Croatia) and people are too. They sometimes act tough, but in the end are loving, caring and welcoming to everyone. It is just part of the folklore, no big deal.
klipser66 wow. Are u in a country that's just all 12 year old boys ?
why does Jon bernthal's face look like Josh Dunn?
True!
/Slaps down Kevin Spacey
/Talks up Roman Polanski
I dunno mang.
Yeah... it's a little fucking weird...
I know. He unintentionally talks like his only problem is with behaviour at work. Spacey's a creep on set, now POLANSKI, that guy was a fucking pro. Kept HIS rape at home.
yep. he lost me there too.
I feel like he was very unbiased and honest with everything he said about all the topics, I have no idea why you'ee being nitpicky.
Correction: Polanski kept his rape at Jack Nicholson's home.
It's a tough profession... like Jon said.
I quit watching The Walking Dead when they killed Shane off.
Mike Peterson you messed up he lives on through rick he becomes even more crazy than shane
Why that makes 0 sense
EXCELLENT INTERVIEW!👍😉😎
I loooove this guy in Ghostwriter...tiny part but perfect
Sweet Virginia was an awesome movie!
Norton worked with Scorsese a year after this.
I love that Jim and Sam aren’t afraid to ask tough questions like the stuff about Polanski.
Yeah, this "no matter how you answer, you will lose" questions. Does Bernthal really deserve such an attitude?
INCREDIBLY TALENTED AND BEYOND HANDSOME!!!!!!
What a straight up sound guy
He looks a tiny bit like Gary Sinise in the video picture.
How many times does this guy say "you know"
Pretty sure Jon Bernthal smoothed his hair
Jon is wearing one of his favorite shirts
12:43 Rubs his head
Edgar Mellencamp makes an appearance at 13:23
OY!!! Edgar tried to come out!!!!
FU. You cannot give a pass to Roman and accuse Kevin. FU.
that last bit about netflix is so true, the changed the game
I wish they had got rid of Rick and kept Shane walking dead would have been as good as it is now
What an awesome actor and man. Def had favorites all through my life but rn it's him. Since I saw him shoot that mofo in the leg on the walking dead. The man just acts so raw.
He's soooo purty
Talented man 👍👍
What you call stead fast rigger regarding our 2nd amendment stance is what we call principle. There are 1000s of gun laws on the books, we have more than met you all half way. Gun control doesn't work unless its intent is to make slaves.
He kinda looks like bizarro Michael Decuvony here
Jon is awesome.
Roman is a monster the girl had to forgive him are it would have destroyed her.
What bad ass in punisher. Fwwuucckk yeah
Great Guy inspires me to be an actor 😃
This is like AC Slater without all of the plastic surgery.
John killed that part
Sam, did you know that Jon Bernthal is married to Kurt Angle's niece?
