I am a Pastor's wife. When I was called First Lady, I said you can call me by name if the person is an adult or Miss M... or Mrs. W if you are a child. Addressing me as Sister M or W was okay because I feel they are my brother and sister in Christ. I do not like the First Lady title. And I do not mind sitting in the back if that is where I'm needed.

@@barbarastinson9240Some people have called me the first lady because they grew up with that in other churches. And others did not attend church where the First Lady title was used. My husband refers to me as his wife which I prefer. He does not call me the First Lady.

I visited a church with my cousin once, and there were rules regarding their “first lady”: she did not come out into the sanctuary until after everyone was seated, no one was allowed to approach her, she left the sanctuary immediately after the service, and she had an “armor bearer” with or around her all of the time. I eventually met her personal armor bearer, because it turned out that she became a manager in my department, and what is so tripped out to me is that she had all of these time demands for this person( the armor bearer) who too was married, and did not care anything about the time demands she was requiring of of a married woman, who divorced, perhaps, not all because of her demands on her as her armor bearer, but I’m certain that was a big part of it. That’s why I can’t deal with the black church. It’s been poisoned by the culture, the music, pimps (you know who you are) or simps( You also know who you are)in the pulpit, and dumb sheep always wanting to be entertained and have their ears tickled!!

@@condesabeatriz9303 I had never heard of it before until I was talking to my district manager and she mentioned that she was the armor bearer to the First Lady at that church. I even asked her what being an armor bearer entailed..the description was too much!!

I was considering becoming a member of a church. But when I saw that the “First Lady,” was the co-pastor, I knew I needed to keep looking.
@@donnajaemoon Welp if he is married, In most cases these days, that is going to be the case. One reason is to keep up with his running around, secondly, most pastors does not make provisions for their wives when they die, divorce or retire. This has become her way of having income after he is done.

I've never liked pastors' wives being called 1st lady...not sure when or how or why they were given a title as such. A lot of man made things goes on in the church now...not interested & most definitely not BIBLICAL. Good commentary & much needed clarification.

I don't like the word "first lady". To me first lady is a worldly term. When I was growing up we didn't pay the pastor's wife any more attention than any of the other ladies in the church. And I don't like armour bearers either. And those that stand when the pastor walk in like he's a king. I wish they would stop it. He's a servant.

I personally find it amazing that when one highlights those practices that have become commonplace in our churches: those practices that are not founded on scripture and people interpret that as holding the Church in low esteem... Make it make sense 😕

I've been preaching that for years and lost every preacher friend I ever had, lol. Actually you show respect of person you sin. The first lady is actually the body Christ or the church. First lady is a term of entitlement and a bedding ground of arrogance.
This is good teaching. I’m sick of the first stuff. I know a church (200-400 members) who has a first lady that is the money manager, secretary, women’s leader, co pastor, and choir director. She has armor barriers who meet her at the car, drive her around on Sundays, pull the car in, and follow her everywhere on church day. 🤦🏾♂️😂

😂😂😂😂😂😂 RIDICULOUS!!! My cousin was an armor barrier for her “First Lady” and I think some people think it’s “an honor” to be an armor barrier. Also, after a while my cousin began to resent the “first lady” and would say, “she can carry her own pocketbook and Bible! I’m ready to go home after church and take care of my own husband and home!” So I see the task as tearing down families, marriages, and homes! I can see respect, but treating her like she’s “higher” than the other of us women, is absolutely RIDICULOUS!

I just ran across this and I have been arguing with my family about First Lady it’s not. Biblical .The church so badly want to be like the world especially the black church they love titles there’s nothing in the Bible about deaconess as well . some church is so out of order.

I have been trying to find out where this term came from and its biblical basis. I never heard the term until about 8 years ago as my home church is not structured in that way.

So I hear what you’re saying about the FirstLady Pastors wife who was offended that you stole from her. You being cool with the Pastor/ Friend prior to the incident is fine, but that Pastor was also HER HUSBAND, and that should carry some weight. I understood you to say that when alone , that you and him were cool until she was present, and then things would shift. Something is wrong with that on both ends and I’m not speaking of hen pecked. As her husband wasn’t he supposed to care about her concern(her heart) with the trespassing you’d caused. Not saying there was not to be forgiveness, but if my husband was still friends with a man who had ( let’s say) harassed or violated me in some way - that would cause problems in the marriage (Loyalty, Security, Trust,) I’m just saying, that’s real! You’re saying that your situation with her wanting you under the jail was power, control, entitlement, and that may be true, but then let’s say she wasn’t the PASTORS WIFE, what should a HUSBANDS sincere stance/ role be? That’s a real question. He shouldn’t be cozy with the offender of his wife behind closed doors , nor should he be hen pecked into doing things to keep a power hungry wife happy. @mathewnickens, we are the church, not the building. Too much non biblical things go on that it turns many off. Remember, in the old and New Testament, it instructs that we are not to add or take away from the word of God.
With all those letters Paul wrote to the church in rebuke.. looks like he had a low regard too 😊… Hmm, why aren’t we judging him?
@@helenahall4893 I'm sure I said nothing about a building. much less it being the Church. I agree that there's a lot of non-biblical things going on in "so-called" places called "the church". But I actually believe our Savior's word in Matt 16:18 (...I will build my Church..." I believe Heb 12:22-23. The problem is that many have a very poor understanding of Christology and Ecclesiology which manifest in many Christians disdaining what and who the church actually is. We're hyper Individualistic.

"I will build my church" could mean build up His people, to come together, on one accord, and obey God's Commandments. You stated, "many have a poor understanding of Christology and Ecclesiology. The problem I have with both of those words is that neither are found in the Bible. I know what the words mean, but the study is based on one's perception from the information they gather. This would conclude man's interpretation, not what God said in His word. I am quite clear on what the church is and what we're seeing, surely isn't it. Lastly, you said "we're hyper individualistic, no, I don't think so. All anyone have to do is open the Bible and read it, study it, research what you do not understand. I have read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, with pen to paper, and researched what I did not understand. I also went to Seminary school and completed a DMin degree in June, 2022 because I wanted to learn all I could and apply it to my life. I have a question for you: Did you ever wonder why the Temple was never rebuilt? What did the other 2 Temples have in common? As a pastors wife, I find that I should always be an example to the women as to how they should live. I live Proverbs 31 as well as Titus 2:3. I am a co-laborer with my husband, just like Priscilla and Aquilla. It's sad that a simple title has left such a bitter taste not only in the mouths of those who have been in the role, but those whom she was supposed to serve. For that, I'm sorry. Thank God my pastor and his wife are not caught up in titles. We can call him by his first name, and she refuses the title of first lady.
Spot on, spot on. That's the problem with many churches, especially small ones. They treat ministry as a family business that should be an inheritance for their kids. This erroneous teaching has been going on for years. We are supposed to be workers one to another not worshipping the pastor and his family. I pray that people's eyes will be opened and that churches willl stop these bad practices.

You speaking truth regarding First Ladies nowadays. Some are so messy and are causing division and confusion in the church . A lot of them have cliques too in and out of the church.
This is a thing? I have never seen this in any church I've been to. I'd leave immediately. We have the pastors wife but she's just the pastors wife really. She'll greet people at the door and we honor her along with the pastor on pastors appreciation but that's about it.
Not only is First Lady not biblical, neither is wearing outrageous bird house and flower mound hats that take up the space in the pews. Stop it.

It's a Black thing that you find in most Black churches and now spread to some of the White churches. It is not Biblical this elevation of the pastor, his wife and family into a role of entitlement. which leads to pride which God will not abide. It's one thing to give honor to whom honor is due but to put them on a pedestal, doing this, you set them up for a fall. God will not share His glory with another. There is NO BIG "I's" nor "LITTLE I's" inn God's Kingdom. one is not elevated above another.

You're awesome and use the gifts that Father God bless you with very well. I have never called any Pastor's wife as First Lady. Growing up in church this was unheard of. Truly traditions of men, first lady. Again this is why Father God's children are so behind with the correct teaching of God's Word. May the Lord continue to help his children with biblical, knowledgeable, Pastor's like you. And may we all continue to seek answers when it does not line up with the word of God. My daughter says the pastor's wife should not be overrated, neither should she depreciated, as has been the culture of the church to devalue women. Standards change over years. Women back then were valued even less than they are today.

It Shouldn’t Be A Problem Unless You Allow It. Not All Pastors Wives are the Same. I was Blessed to have served under Two of the Best 1st Ladies. They Both Sat on the floor in the General Audience. Both Served wherever assistance was needed without fanfare. RIP 1st Mother Fannie Bridgewater and Lady Deloris Cyrus. I Miss You Both Tremendously

I agree with you. I grew up in a church where the ladies were and are called that. You are correct. A lot of them have that "I'm better than you" attitude. Some wanted a person or persons to carry all of their stuff, and wait on them hand and foot. I heard one say that their "adjutants" had to put their coats over a puddle of water so that the "First Lady" wouldn't get her shoes wet. Then her and others laughed about it.

In Jeremiah 3:15 it says that I will give you Shepherds after my own heart, who is Jesus talking about here, and if he gave some pastors, who did he give them to and how can you be a pastor without people to Pastor, Walter Jones you are wrong, and why does Scripture say in the book of Hebrews obey them that rule over you, because they watch out for your souls, and it'll be uncomfortable for you if they have to give a poor report to me about you, who is he talking about here, you are wrong and you can't use that analogy with two police officers in this particular place come we talked about spiritual matters versus physical matters
Never seen this in my church nor my town! No special seats for anyone!! We esteem only One! Jesus Christ who sits on the throne of our hearts and our physical temple! Learned this behavior from social media!

It's about time someone else attacked this subject I've lost a lot of pastor friend because I taught against first lady being scriptural. It is a sin according to scriptures "hereby we perceive God has no respect of persons" "when ye have respect to persons ye sin" these two scriptures it a sin but a lot of jello spine preacher pasonify the term permitting them and their churces, can it end you in hell, well does not the scripture say no sin can enter therein

The pastor I grew up under did NOT want our congregation referring to his wife as "first Lady " for the reasons you stated. He made it very clear that she was a sister in Christ. She wasn't over anyone, she was HIS helpmate. That's it. So, even though people refer to my current pastor's wife as first Lady, I call her Sister. Side note: neither my current pastor, nor his wife require people to call her first Lady, but some people feel like it's the appropriate thing to do. It's weird to me.
