little voice was the closer she's ever gotten. unfortunately she shifted to a little less interesting pop music... even though she still came up with songs like once upon another time which were totally great. I wish she did something more leaning towards blues too tho. such a shame

Meakame is right, it's about a crush of hers that's not happening. If you search her name and come round soon, there should be a clip titled "sara bareilles talks about grammy and sing "come round soon" from 4 years ago where she mentioned briefly the source of the song. I can't include link here, it's a great piano rendition too. Love that old version. What's amazing is the transformation this song has taken throughout the years and it just gotten better and better. She's beyond talent.

Most songs are an amalgam of experiences, so it's probably not about only that. But I read something way back about the impetus for the song being her parent's divorce. So I interpret all the 'daddy' and 'play throw and catch' references as literal, though they're probably metaphoric as well. It just really makes more sense to me as an absent parent-child relationship, but who knows? And no doubt the meaning has changed for her over time...Whatever was behind it, she definitely went there.

She recently broke up with her long-term boyfriend. I'm guessing that's behind the amazing intensity of this song... just watching it from behind the screen, I could FEEL her anguish and see the pain in her glistening eyes.

As soon as I got to the video I skipped to 3:15.....You could say I was a bit terrified. lol.
    Pretty voice tho.

Thanks for the info. I'll take your word for it about the crush. Can't remember where I saw the interview about the divorce, but as I said it was a looong time ago, back in Little Voice days. Anyway, doubtful she was getting all teary-eye about a college crush at Radio City...Could have been the recent break-up, although it seems like she's the one who did the walking away. So I guess it will remain a mystery, which is as it should be--the woman deserves a private life, lol.

I seriously wonder whether there have been any unsuspecting parents who have brought their kids to one of her concerts, because Sara's live performances aren't really family friendly

  • @mysticsmb

But the song was originally written about her father, and he was in the audience for this. I think his presence at such a milestone event and the nature of their relationship over the years is more likely the source of all the emotion.

I want to have her baby. You can't be a true Sara fan and not want to have her baby. It's kind of a thing.

  • @vantilate

Wow, is that true? I'm honestly curious. I would never have guessed, given the lyrics of this song... I thought it was about a guy who was toying with her feelings.
