I am half way into this video but I need to correct something to the poster. You have referred to Fairview Training center as a "mental institution". That would be the State Hospital on Center St (at one time housing over 5,000 psychiatric patience currently in 2018 serving approximately 500 individuals with psychiatric issues). I have lived in Salem since 1979, took a great interest in Fairview from the time I learned of its existence back then period in later years my ex-wife work there for many years and I've had many, many friends who work there even right up until its closure including a good lady friend who sadly is no longer with us and whose name I choose not to mention in this post who was a high-level administrator at Fairview for approximately 20 years. Working for Danville services at the time of fairview's closure I did my training for Danville, some of my training, out at Fairview when there were only a couple individuals still house there in fact I am unable to name the individual but we at Danville services took the very last patient from Fairview after the closure. An individual needing constant care and supervision but also a very violent female individual that other facilities in the area chose not to take hence the poor woman being left as the last patient at Fairview. Perhaps someone from Salem reading this now will know who I'm talking about I would love to give the name but the confidentiality issue even though she has since passed is ingrained in my head. I'm getting off track, what I wanted to say to the poster, to clarify rather is Fairview was not for mental patients as you would put it Fairview was for mentally and physically disabled individuals. Disabled being the most politically and current correct term as it changes so often unlike the word retarded that had been used for so many years. Anyway friend just wanted to clarified for you the difference between the types of individuals housed at Fairview versus the types of mental individuals housed at the Oregon State Hospital. There are many wonderful videos on RUclips Simply by looking up Fairview Training Center it's slightly odd but true name. If you look you will find one that was actually filmed in 1959 that kind of glorifies the place and doesn't mention all the horrible things that were being done there but shows a great many children and individuals appearing to be happy and perhaps somewhere but for the most part back in those days. Patients were treated horribly it did in fact improve later, later years that is as we learn more and more about and I hate to put it this way using this word but physical and mental retardation. At one point in my past I was a housing manager for to medically fragile Cottages that Shangri-La in Salem and the majority of our patients there had came out of Fairview again I cannot mention a name but one favorite lady we cared for at Shangri-La I had turned out to not be mentally disabled or retarded as her books from Fairview stated she was put into Fairview as a child because of a backwards leg over the 50 some-odd years that she remained at Fairview before coming to Shangri-La she became socially again here's the word retarded oh, how I hate that word, and thanks to myself my co-manager and some wonderful staff members we realized that, I will call her patient m, was not mentally disabled at all, her years at Fairview made her such period shortly after leaving Shangri-La I had heard that this woman eventually was able to live with assisted care in her own apartment. I had done a lot of research and learned just how many physically disabled children were put out there that grew up acting mentally disabled because the staff didn't treat them as if they were only physically disabled and their main contact was with other individuals house there who were mentally disabled so therefore they became socially disabled. I am rambling, just wanted to clarify to the watches of this video and to the poster the types of individuals that were housed at Fairview Training Center. I have to use speak to text because of some physical issues of my own at this age so please forgive any errors. God bless to all and please pray tonight for all the souls that passed through the doors of Fairview training center in the many years in which it was in existence. Happy Thanksgiving to all! Oh my! I just read the above post. Never seen so many errors in one speak to text! Love the part about me not being the R word! Did you all catch that. Lol! Didnt realize that on you tube comments when you wanted a period at the end of a sentence it spelled out the word PERIOD. Grrr! Speak to text is NOT the best thing the Tech-Gods created :) Best wishes all.

Went this week....there's hardly anything left. It's very, very sad, IMO. In a year it will all be $400,000 eco-friendly houses or whatever buzzworthy words you want to use. Literally nothing is standing that's in your video. Wish I had gone sooner. Yes, the place you called the chow hall was in fact, the chow hall. Built in 1969, I believe it made all the food services central instead of de-centralizing them to each residence. I walked into a few buildings (which was a very bad idea because they're severely decrepit). I went into Oregon and Long, which are way to the west and nearest the Fairview Addition new subdivision. Oregon building, I'm not even sure what that was used for. The roof had fallen in on itself and it was such a tiny building (it's to the west of the laundry building hidden under the trees). I can't even fathom what they used the building for. Long is mid-century and was probably quite beautiful at one time. When you walk in, there's a wreck room and big windows that look out into the canyon (where a middle school is situated now). To the right was an entry room with what looked like a locker room or shelving to stick your backpack into. Then just a long hallway, which I'm guessing was a dormitory. There was also this amazing either art piece or fireplace. It was actually quite stunning. I went and looked for the exhaust, but there was none so I guess it wasn't a fireplace. It would actually look great in any home these days. I also looked into McCall, but can't tell what it was used for. A school perhaps?

The Food Service building was for residents on cottages close to there who were ambulatory. I worked there from 1981-1988 and residents who lived farther away and were non ambulatory or on intensive care cottages had food delivered from the Dining Hall to Dining room areas on their cottages 3 times a day (insulated trays like for hospitals).
