      So how does the wheels get wheel slip

    • @joshc956
      @joshc956 3 года назад +2

      @@Mrmonkey19888 They really shouldn't be using a slug to pull real weight. It's designed to spread traction, not add power. It's useful for low speed switching operations but it's the wrong thing to use here, and probably the cause of the slip. The front engine's power is cut because the slug draws from it, so they don't have as much concentrated power going into the climb to boot. I'm not sure if slugs have sanders, or if that training loco does, but if one or both lack sanders that's going to contribute, too. Essentially, 2/3 of the power sources chosen for this job aren't really made to do the job at hand.

      P.S. That is how I clean my track. Either digitally by coupling some locomotives together, hooking up a train, (Might as well get some revenue.) and setting the engines for different speeds. I also do it in analog by putting five or six locomotives, some with radically different gearing, on a train and let the wheel spinners do their work. It works great, and running your fleet like that really separates the men from the boys. This only works if the "spinning" locomotive(s) do NOT have traction tires, but the other locomotives can have them. ♡ T.E.N.

      Cow and calf units are different. A calf is a functional locomotive just with no cab (alot like a f7B) what they have here is a slug. Slugs do not have their own prime mover just the electrical components that are slaved to the attached locomotive.

      @@fancyyahoo correct slugs contain traction motors and all the electrical components of a locomotive except the diesel engine and generator as those have been removed and usually replaced with concrete blocks for weight to give the slug traction. Reason is the slave locomotive can generate more electricity that its own traction motors can use. Some slugs (like the one here) were built with dynamic brakes although most were not. All slugs are built out of retired locomotives

    probably pushing against his cars brakes which aren’t fully released ie. trains BP not fully pumped up….setting a minimum application and pushing is a common shunt move especially when coming onto other cars….
    basically when the person on the ground says stop the engineer shuts throttle off/applies more air brake and the train stops very quickly…
    though you don’t want to be spinning wheels or pushing car brakes on for too long…
    another reason is they could also be pushing cars with handbrakes on

      It's called a "Slug" RP-E4D. This unit has motors built in for low speed yard pulling. It gets its power from the main locomotive the "mother" to run its traction motors . These do not have prime movers "diesel engine" built in them.

    Why does the first responders train need to be so long.?
    Anyone.!?!.
    I don't think it is a first responders train.! The tank cars look virtually new. Surely they would be using old, knackered stock.?

      @3:25 if the train goes in the opposite direction another mile it would be in City Point. That same line was used during the Civil War to bring in supplies from the North. Northern ships would come down the coast to the Chesapeake Bay up the James River and be offloaded at City Point.
