I can see the happiness, joyfulness, and generosity in this man's eyes, especially when he plays this song. Rest in peace, Kongar ol-Ondar. You will always be remembered.
"You bend with the breeze, or you break." The Germans have a martial saying still used to this day: "Steh gerade oder zerbrich" - same concept, different mechanics.
I'll never forget the first time I heard this piece. It was in a documentary called "Little Dieter Needs to Fly", about a naturalized German (Dieter Dengler) who became a US Naval Aviator and was shot down over Laos and held captive by the communist Pathet Lao. He and his fellow prisoners managed to break out, and of all of them, Dengler was the only American to evade re-capture and was repatriated to the USA, thus making history as the only American pilot to do so in the entire period of US wars in SE Asia. ruclips.net/video/uuMHkB8Tj-U/видео.html The music in the film fascinated me and I wanted to learn more about it because I had served in Asia (Korea) and was friends with many Vietnam veterans but I had never heard anything like this. I knew this music wasn't from the region. In the end I am uncertain why Werner Herzog chose this piece, but it was a good choice nonetheless because it communicated the surreal atmosphere of the circumstances in which Dengler found himself and the alienation that he felt by going from happy-go-lucky pilot to soldier in a brutal war which was being played for keeps by the Viet Cong, the NVA and the Pathet Lao. I strongly recommend seeing "Little Dieter" because it follows Dengler's catharsis as he returns to Laos forty years after his capture and he relives his ordeal for the cameras. Kongar-Ol was an amazing man, and so was Dengler. RIP.
This just goes to prove that good music supercedes categories of music. I have no idea what he sings about butI know how he feels about it and feelings need no translation. I typically don't like country music but Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson are two of my very favorite musicians. I don't discount anyone's music just because they are associated with a specific genre or not associated with any genre, like Ondar. I could listen to this amazingly talented man sing about Tuva all day long and be happy as a peach. Just wish he was still alive. I would have loved to see him live, I can only imagine the emotions he would convey in a live setting. If I am having a bad day all I need to do is watch this video and see Ondar smile and it takes me out of whatever funk I am in. That, to me, is the definition of great music, it provides the emotional push one needs to feel what they desire to feel at that moment.
In my opinion his voice (not skill but the voice itself) is unbeatable. Radik Tyulyush and Kaygal-Ol Khovalyg are great guys but they just can't sing as beautifully as Kongar-Ol did (buy the way they are my #4 and #2 respectively)
Different categories exist by their distinguishable properties, and that’s not the end of the world. I don’t understand why people are so scared of that. I like his music like you do, but that also doesn’t make it good, that’s all made up by an individual how they enjoy or dislike something.
Сказать спасибо слишком мало. Низкий поклон и уважение, словами не передать, его энергетика и голос доходит до каждой клеточки тела и души. Его нет, но люди его помнят.
I just learned from this that Ondar has since passed away. I am truly saddened to hear this. I was fortunate enough to spend a day with him while I was in LA
One good thing came from his sudden and tragic loss. The lesson that pure joy from a true soul still lives on after death. I know we all still feel his joy now. He lives on and lives on mightily.
Thank you for touching our world. Your successes live on in many us to this day. Even I have begun to practice and perform Tuvan music. Blessings to you and your son Bady Dorzhu.
@@beomgyuniverseofficial No, he mentions a memory with his father in the Library of Congress and Bady says his father said he can’t do khoomei so yes, Kongar-ool is his uncle*, not his father. *Edit: In the same video, when Sean is translating what Bady-Dorzhu says, he says “it’s your uncle Radik that does that” which means Kongar-ool isn’t certainly his uncle either. Ondar is a big family so I’m not surprised, they might not even be closely related.
This is the first time I listened to Kongar-ol-Ondar, and I have to say I have never heard anyone sing like this. It was amazing how he sings and does that with his voice. Now I'm going on a quest to watch and listen to more videos of him doing a performance here on RUclips. Great upload, thank you for introducing me to his music.
I AM FROM INDIA...DO NOT KNOW THE MEANING BUT LOVE THIS SONG AND THROAT SINGING VERY MUCH,,,, IT,S SORT OF SPIRITUAL EFFECT ON ME...THANKS FOR SHARING THIS GREAT PERFORMANCE....

He always looked so benevolent, and generous. He knew, or at least hoped, that what he was doing was offering joy or a moment of pleasure. Good music and a good meal are two of the most culturally unifying things this world has to offer, and he was a exceptional provider of the former.
Groovy ending man!! I own Genghis Blues, super dig, moving. Love and Respect to Kongar-ol-Ondar's family and friends. Gone from Earth, but his songs remain.
You could see the absolute joy on his face during the song and after finishing his song. He seemed so happy to receive a hug afterward. It's obvious to me that he was a joyful soul that loved with intensity and played his music with pure passion. It hurts to think that he died at 51. Good people are really taken away from us too soon. He left behind his amazing music for everyone to uplift themselves with and I'm truly grateful for him existing.
Thank you for sharing this video with everyone. Every time I see Ondar perform or sing, I can't get over the absolute joy he exuded. Thanks for keeping his memory and legacy alive with this video.
This has been here for almost five years and still this rather intimate performance is something I come back to once in a while. Such a great musician - just take a guitar and do some songs in your personal style, wherever you might be - and who wouldn't love Tuvan music. (And of course I'm here because of Feynman.)
OMG this is Kongar like I've never seen him before. I wanted to go to Inner Mongolia just to say hello to him as I had the means it would take, but I kept putting it off. Now I regret it. RIP Kongar-Ol, and RIP Richard Feynman, who brought Tuva to the West, and Paul Pena, who knocked the socks off the Mongolians with his earth-shaking Tuva :-(
Now Kongar-Ol is together again with Paul (Pena, father of "Jet Airliner"), and I imagine, they Kargyraa in heaven...'rock the whole thing up there :-)) ...and again I get tears in my eyes and in my heart, thinking of them. I am so happy that I can watch them both on DVD in "GENGHIS BLUES" whenever I want to. They both were some of the finest men here on planet earth EVER! R.I.P. , Paul & Kongar-Ol ! ! !

I can see the happiness, joyfulness, and generosity in this man's eyes, especially when he plays this song.
Rest in peace, Kongar ol-Ondar. You will always be remembered.
He is so happy it feels like a superpower.
When I saw him play he told us that "In order for a tradition to survive, it has to change." Words to live by...for now!

After years of practicing, i finally got throat singing down to where i could produce chords with my voice. But Kongor’s whistling. The man was a jedi
Wonderful. Did you see Paul Pena's performance in Mongolia (Ghengis Blues)? UNREAL
@@spudeleven5124 Mongolia? Paul Pena visited Tuva, not Mongolia.
@@BoarhideGaming RIGHT. Thanks for the correction. Paul Pena was amazing, though. I take it you've seen the documentary.

7 years before I stated. Only started a couple months ago...

And this recording is him on a bad day! Normally his kargyyra (the lower, almost robotic style) is much stronger.
There are a few recordings of performances with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones that really show off how amazing his was.
