Hey Doug, How do I get started, become moderator on my channel. I assume it's in the setup of your channel? For an old Hillbilly start to finish please. Oh can I do it all on smart phone or are some settings only available on PC?
How do you become a chat moderator. And when you do. Are you able to Mod any channel or is it a particular one.
@@gino07770 Moderators are appointed on a per channel basis. The streamer/creator has to add you as a moderator on their channel. Its up to them to choose who they want as a mod.
@@DougHewsonYT Thanks for the reply. I apreciated.
That was cool to see the other side of the Mod life, It's not all tea and doughnuts. You guys work hard behind the scenes. Great job
Glad you enjoyed it!

Very helpful Video, thanks for taking the time to help out new mods.

Awesome video of moderating during a live stream! Thanks for making these videos Doug 👍
How do you do this on iPad Pro? On RUclips app?
Hi Doug, I recently added a moderator to my live streams and have found your videos to be helpful for things I didn't think about. One answer I haven't found yet is whether or not moderators are compensated by content creators? I'm seeing how useful moderators are and curious about how they are shown appreciation aside from verbally in the stream. This is all new territory for me. Thanks much!
Typically mods do it for the community, but it's really good if you can appreciate your mods in some way. In the past, I've had people ask if mods get paid, which generally they don't (unless they work for the company) - but I really like this question, because it gets me thinking further about this.
Recalling my experience, I've been appreciated by getting free merch, Amazon gift cards, free access to courses/training/masterminds, etc. and things like that. On one occasion, I did get paid for moderating a special event live stream. Bottom line, your mods will appreciate it when you appreciate them!
Thanks Doug! This is extremely useful information. I love all of the options you shared. Since I don’t have merch ATM, or courses, Amazon gift cards are a good option. I never thought about a special event live stream, but if I have one, I can see paying mods should be a part of it. Thanks again!
Thank you for this. I just became a moderator for the first time and had questions. You answered all of them! This was awesome of you to post. 😃

@@CelestialKappait has no down falls 😂
@@AlphaPerspectiveDailyYou're either being sarcastic or you haven't been as much involved in the moderation scene as I have. Are you just chilling in the back not really doing anything? Do you answer questions? Time people out? Deal with bans and ban appeals? Do you clear the streamers redemption notifications and alert them of new ones they may not have done? Above all this do you have access to or deal with their discord Admin permissions? Do you ban, timeout, and mute people in discord? Do you manage mods in discord to make sure everything is running smoothly? Above all this... Do you get paid? I highly doubt it. If you havent done any of this sadly I wouldn't consider you more than a fill in. So now tell me... it does not have downfalls. You're pulling off a second job that has an hourly schedule of 24/7 and you arent being paid yet it has no downfalls. Be realistic my guy.
“Lay down the law!” Geez, thanks for all you do to keep these chats clean and safe for everyone. Thankfully, my live streams are not as busy as this so I moderate for myself. What’s the ratio of concurrent viewers to moderators you recommend?
I love that question. I think it depends on your channel’s demographic. Some of the channels I mod for have a very wide cross-section from young to old, and it’s usually the younger demographic that tend to spam, etc. That being said, you never know when a random troll scrolling through a bunch of public live streams will come across you stream. For a public stream, one should be the bare minimum. I’ve been solo on streams with a few hundred concurrent viewers and that can become a handful. I think 3-4 is a good number in the up to 500 concurrent viewers for a public general audience stream.
When it comes down to a more niche audience, say older professionals, 1 moderator is probably going to be able to handle hundreds of concurrent viewers as they are mainly moving into helper mode rather than moderation mode. being there to deal with the random troll is probably as hard as it will get.
For member’s only type streams, you could probably get away with zero moderators.
Hi Doug! I didn't know there was a keyboard shortcut 😀Thanks for the tips.

Thank you so much for this! My twitch streamer is moving into multi-platform streaming so I'm n00b at RUclips, you covered the basics really nicely. Will check out your other vids to see if you have any advice about moderating for multiple sources of a stream at once (e.g. Twitch, RUclips, & Kick) is there an app or some trick we can use? Thanks again! 😊
most of my stuff is RUclips specific, but on occasion there is some crossover.
I tried the Option Key Method, do you also have to hit another button cause I hovered over a name the bar comes up are you supposed to click the mouse pad as well?
So long as the chat window is in focus, it just a matter of hovering with the mouse and holding down option. If that's not working, you will have to click the 3 dots to the right of the comment instead.
The message that displays: "This message is held for review." and gives you two options, either to Show or Hide -- if I don't want the message to be shown, should I necessarily press "Hide"? Or is it hidden automatically?
for those, you can let ride if you’re busy - they will stay hidden from the general chat. I’ll click show if the AI flagged it in error.
Awesome Tutorial Doug! I've never been a moderator but would like to help one day if needed, it's true, sometimes you need several moderators when there's spammers. You do an excellent job moderating !
Funny thing, I saw me in the chat at 528 😄
nice, you got a cameo Suzy!
hello Doug, thanks for all the tips so far.. what to do if ppl on my live stream speak in Azerbeyjan? :D
That just depends if it's an issue for you. Many streamers like the chat to be in their native language so they can understand what's going on. If that's what you prefer, then you can politely ask them to comment in the language you prefer. Let your mods know how you want that handled as a streamer, and if you happen to be a mod for someone else, ask them offline how they want you to handle it.
That was a helpful video for me to understand the basics. I was wondering how some people timeout viewers for certain amounts of time? I was watching my streamer when another mod times out someone for more than 300 seconds. I was just curious on how they did that.
Variable timeouts is relatively new - its not available on all channels just yet. I've only been able to access it via the RUclips app but not on desktop so far.
Can you use moderation tools as a mod for someone else's channel on a mobile device? I have a wrench or two but havent had to use them, believe it or not, and dont know how to If I did.
Yes, it works just as well on mobile. Tap the comment's 3 dot menu to bring up the options.
brows your channel just today
if a person says something bad and the moderator deletes it, will it show up later when it is saved to the channel? I dont know if that makes sense. Let me try to ask in another way just in case. So if someone watching the video later when the live is finished and saved to the channel, will that deleted comment appear on the video for the amount of time that it was on there before getting deleted?
No, if the moderator removes it, it will not show to a viewer at all. Mods and streamer can see that a comment was removed but no one else will.
And if u ban someone, or if u put someone in timeout, if they kept on sending chats during the time out or ban, are the moderators still able to see those messages?
I know no one else will see them, but can mods still see them?
If they are banned or "hidden" from the channel, they can keep chatting but no one will see it - not the mods and not the streamer. For time-outs, users are told they have been timed out by a moderator - any messages they try to send during the 5 minute timeout just won't send. Once the timeout is over, they can start chatting again.
im a mod in a live and this helped
Right on! 🙌
Great video. Random Question. if a moderator is themselves being abusive. Is there any resort to reporting them? Some moderators seem to abuse their power.
From a viewer's point of view, there is a general Report button, which is next to any comment/chat message. Keep in mind, it has to fall under a RUclips Community Guidelines violation, like harassment for example. Hopefully, if the streamer sees it, they would remove the comment and remove the moderator. I would hope most serious creators care about their moderators representing them in a good light and remove bad actors.
Thanks for the video! I'm a freshman moderator for the YT channel, the channel owner prohibits hiding users. How do I undo the erroneous ban, you mentioned a small window of opportunity? I mean, how is it done technically, I just don't want to experiment on users.
If the pop-up to reverse a hide user from channel disappears, click the 3 dots on the removed channel/message, and you should have the ability to "unhide".
That's how it is Doug. Gotta give them that hammer!

I’m trying to figure out how link a iPhone membership
I was wondering if there's a RUclips bot I can add to moderate streams and hide any users with specific words in their names that keep spamming the stream chat
There are chat bots out there from various streaming asset sites like Streamlabs, Stream Elements and Nightbot for example. From what I've seen, the best action they tend to take is to timeout based on certain behaviour. There may be something out there that does it, but I've not come across it myself.
Hello,
Question: So can a mod un-ban and un-time out someone that has been banned or put on timeout from another moderator?
Un-ban, yes. They can go back to the hidden comment and hover/click the three dots and un-ban - handy if done accidentally. With time-outs, you currently cannot undo those.
I finally can be Nick eh 30!
As a moderator; How to highlight a user's comment from chat, so the streamer and viewers can see that? then how to remove it.
Right now, RUclips doesn't have that option. Some third party streaming options have that ability, but it's all done outside of RUclips.
How do o sign in as a moderator? Can I do it from a I pad pro ?
yes, any device you can log into and interact with your comments.
how do you slow down the time the live chat goes?
Do you mean slow mode? Only the streamer can change, turn on or off slow mode in the chat.
I asked a question on someones live stream where the reader was responding to our questions, and my polite short question was erased before the reader could even get to it, i wrote a different question, again very basic, but again it just disappeared, before my eyes, and so i wonder how that happens and if it is a moderator that is randomly erasing questions. Im not familiar with live streams, so perhaps you can give an idea how that is possible. I am a member of that channel and listen regularly. Thank you.
A number of things could be happening there.
#1 the Google comment filters are auto-removing the comments due to a possible trigger word in the comment. These can sometimes happen for seemingly no good reason. I've seen this happen on a number of occasions. From a moderator's view, the comment doesn't show in the chat at all and I've had the commenter ask if we can see the comment and we cannot.
#2 Sometimes live Google moderators may be watching and removing comments real time. I have seen this happen once or twice as the mods can see that happen with a note saying a comment was moderated by a Google Moderator.
#3 the creator's blocked words list is doing something similar to the above. That will depend on what words of phrases they have set-up to be auto-removed. In these cases, they are held for review and the moderators who can then approve then if they are actually OK.
#4 In addition, moderators on the live stream (or the streamer) could be manually removing comments.
If anything odd like this happens, you could politely ask the mods if they saw your comment.
Hello! During a live chat, accidentally I timed someone out.. that person has not been able to return back into that chat room under that name since, why would this happen? And how do We fix it? Thank you.. I am very new to moderating ☺️
Timeouts will only last 5 minutes so it's unusual for that to lead to a permanent block. Possibly they were hidden by accident? The streamer may need to check their Blocked Channels List in Settings to see if they are on there. If not, one trick I found was to add them to the Approved list instead.
@@DougHewsonYT thank you so much!
Hi there I have a question are RUclips moderators allowed to tell people off on livestreams or tell people to not do this and that and solicit others?
They should be following whatever the streamer wants for their stream. If not, the streamer should remove them.
In my opinion, we should all conduct ourselves respectfully, whether moderators or not. I think a higher standard should be expected of moderators as a rule. That being said, the streamer should set the tone and rules for their stream and the moderators should respectfully enforce those.
Hi mate,i have just started as a mod on a friends live stream,2 so far.when i delete messages,he still seems to see them, and read one out accidentaly, thinking i didn't delete has caused confusion...can you help, thanks Andy
Sounds like he's viewing his comments via a 3rd party streaming app or service. They pull in the comments directly from RUclips but don't check back for changes to the state of the comment. I notice that on streams I mod for that use StreamYard. I've seen comments pulled up just after I've timed out somebody. Not sure if the RUclips API allows them to poll or refresh for updated comment states (might be something I could bring up with the team).
@@DougHewsonYT thanks for your reply
I tried to add a moderator to my livestream, I found no way to do it. The 3 dots by the person had no option to covert to a moderator. This is on android
You need to be logged into the account that is streaming. Only the streamer can mod someone.
@@DougHewsonYT I was, it was done on the RUclips app on my phone. Seams like this sort of thing only works well via a desktop. This is 2021 and you would of thought RUclips would of sorted this issue by now

I last moderated a stream on Friday, and it was working fine for me. Make sure the window the chat is in is the active window..
@@DougHewsonYT mm.. I'm just doing the usual stuff during live, just got confused why it just suddenly not showing the "thingie" when I'm holding the alt key now. Which is why I'm back to pressing the three dots for moderating lol (pain xD)
Why do those people have messages that say hide or show? Is it cuz they were banned before so the AI is cautious with them? or it’s cuz they used a keyword which caused the AI to hide only that specific message?
Either it matches a word in your own blocked words filter, or the general RUclips/Google filters.
How to do you stop the host from getting the blocked comments for their q and a? Tonight was moderating and we removed comments but it was selected by host with streamdeck
That's typically an issue with whatever streaming software/service they are using. Most don't update after comments are moderated because they simply take the incoming feed and don't refresh the entire comment feed. My recommendation would be to reach out to the devs of the streaming software/service to add that ability to their feature roadmap. I know that Ecamm are adding this in their current beta.
I have a ton of wrenches and lots of times I’m using a iPhone and can’t link memberships from iPhones. You probably can’t answer it … It’s fairly new issue RUclips hasn’t had memberships for that long. However I’m sure you’re aware of the iPhone products not being Best friends with Google.
If you mean the Join button to become a member of a channel, RUclips has this to say on their Help pages:
"Purchasing memberships on iOS is not available on all channels but we are continuously rolling out this option to more channels."
Hi, can you please tell me if an RUclipsr can mute a moderator for a time and how it appears for moderator? Thank you.
There is no mute per se, but a Streamer/channel owner can fully moderate a moderator.
- Anyone who gets a timeout will get an alert in the chat.
- If a moderator gets "Hidden" from the channel, they will also lose their mod privileges, so you'll know fairly quick something is up.
@@DougHewsonYT I'm a moderator and I couldn't sent some messages on Live chat, it said Error , try again, is possible the Streamer muted me for some time? then i could write again, thank you very much for answering me!
I've had that happen on occasion. Its simply the live chat glitching and/or just an internet connectivity issue.
Great I whant to be a RUclipsr so I will watch all these videos for tips
You got this!
Hi mate! Can you please tell me how to remove someone from a RUclips livestream if you have been assigned as a moderator?
If you're on a mobile device, tap on a comment from that person and choose "Hide User from Channel". On desktop/browser, you can do it two ways: 1) click on the 3 dots to the right of the comment and choose "hide User from Channel" or 2) hover over the comment and hold down the ALT/Option key, then click the 🚫 to hide the user. From that point, they will not be able to comment from that account.
@@DougHewsonYT Thank you so much!!👍🙂
Hello There! One question - How do i know if I am a Managing moderator or standard moderator??
If you're a managing moderator, when you click or tap on a comment, you should have additional options to add/remove moderators - that's probably the easiest way to tell. If not, you're a regular moderator.
@@DougHewsonYT That's great! all clear Thank you!
My problem is me being on a certain live channel that I really love very positive, but a lot of the times I would do a simple “hello how you doing” to certain moderator & everyone in chat and don’t get acknowledged wondering how to find out if a moderator blocked me?!!
That's an interesting one. When a moderator or streamer uses the "Hide User from Channel" option - it isn't supposed to be obvious. But what I would suggest, the next stream, get two devices and watch the stream on both. One logged in as you, and another logged out of RUclips. Comment from your channel and see if it shows up on the non logged in channel in chat.
@@DougHewsonYT thanks alot for that response, haven't thought of that been dealing with this for some time. If I'm blocked sadly said would just completely delete the channel wouldn't want any tension, thanks again 👍🏼

Is there a way for just moderators to chat with one another?
Not currently. It is on my wish list of features I'm hoping RUclips implements in their promised moderation updates.
So if u get alot of spam and to delete quickly timing them out will get rid of all the spam comments at once??
Yes, a time-out also removes their previous run of spam at the same time.

Im a mod for a small youtuber is there anyway i can give other people in chat mod?
Only the channel owner or high back-end permissions can appoint moderators. Mods and managing mods cannot appoint new mods.
I have a pretty basic question about tagging. I know how to tag in chat, but I don't know how to tag names that have emojis or different fonts. I see another mod that is able to tag names with emojis and such, but I cannot for the life of me figure it out! lol. Do you know the trick to tag these unique names?
My workaround for this is to copy paste the name from the chat. Special characters and emojis are near impossible to try to figure out any other way.

Does the youtuber have to make you a moderator?
Yes
What up with emojis a mod said using them will cause spam flag how's that
When it comes to emojis two things you want to look out for - too much in one post (we like to call this an emoji wall) or spamming the same group of emojis over and over (which is basically spamming). Just using emojis to embellish your comment is perfectly fine and what the emojis are there for.
I've not heard it referred to as a spam flag, that might just be what they call it in that community.

How does one let it be known to people they are willing to work a bit for money not for free as a mod? It's work after all! Like I know a lot of people that can mod from home for next to nothing a month bc they are disabled...but not dumb.
Interesting question, and I have to admit, I've only once done a paid gig as a moderator. In that case, it was a company with a RUclips channel doing a 24 hour live stream for charity. My reputation in the community and being in a non US time zone worked together and they approached me.
I do think you need a track record of knowing what you're doing and having a cool head at all times. I have not heard of anyone putting themselves out there, but I'm sure it can be done. Finding the right communities around live streaming and being active in them would open doors for gigs to come your way.

How Do You Become A Moderator
A streamer has to invite you to moderate for them. To get yourself in the best place for that, always be present in streams, be helpful to others, and join in the discussion and the general community vibe. They have to know you as a regular in their community and over time trust is built.
@@DougHewsonYT Thank You Doug

Its exactly the same. Once a comment has been entered and appears in the chat, you can click the 3 dot menu and select Pin. You must be the streamer or on the streamer's account to pin.
I'm a moderator and sometimes the streamer wants me to pin information.
