    Super helpful video. I have two questions: What will happen when 2 moderators timeout the same person? Is it 300 seconds timeout or 600 seconds? And the other question is can we unban person banned a long time ago and how if it's possible? Thank you!

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  3 года назад +2

      If multiple mods timeout someone it does not stack, they just get the one 300 second timeout. The only way to unban someone later is for the streamer to go into their channel settings later and remove them. Mods cannot.

    Hi Doug.. great video. I have a basic question. How can i get the questions from the live chat to the youtube live video stream? Do we need a special tool

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  3 года назад

      You can highlight individual chat messages on screen if you use certain live streaming services or software. most of the web based streaming services do it, like StreamYard, Restream Studio, Melon, Be.Live, etc. along with the software Ecamm Live on a Mac.

    When having Moderators, do channel owners have a moderator hierarchy? Such as Doug being the Main moderator and then then others back you up? Picking up things that you may have missed while addressing another issue?
    (I may have asked this too soon as I am watching your Live Moderator Video where you are getting into that.......)

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  3 года назад +1

      In terms of RUclips's mechanics no - there is only the Streamer, then Mods then everyone else (regular viewers, Members, etc.)
      How defined those roles are depends on the individual streamer - some will keep all mods equal, whilst others might have a mod "leader" so other mods can have a go-to person mid stream if any issues arise. The bigger the streams get, the more necessary the latter becomes.

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  3 года назад +1

      Great question! In a live stream situation, you can see within the chat window that a comment was removed, by whom and also the ability to click on it to read the removed comment.
      For a video comments section, you don't get any of that.

      Nice question - I have a video covering this in my queue to make. The most basic way is to copy/paste the link from a pre-made list - possibly stored in a Google Sheet/Doc where it could be shared with other mods as well. Then there are some automations you can do which I'll be covering in my upcoming video. These relate to various types of hot keys, buttons and even voice commands!

      @@theastewart6721 no problem! Quite simply so long as you have moderator status you simply copy and paste the URL into the chat. A fully fledged URL (with the at the start) should automatically turn into a clickable link.

      @@erinnflaherty it’s not really a huge amount of work. They are already wanting to be watching the stream, and happy to help out. Sometimes on a livestream another mod may block someone wrongly or by mistake and I've noticed on one of the other mods I can unblock someone he has blocked but most others I dont have that option. • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  3 года назад +1

      None of the RUclips tools are helpful for that, but you could co-ordinate that in a private chat convo on Discord, Messenger, Slack, etc. I did something like that for Dee Nimmin a few weeks ago, people were Super Chatting for channel reviews and I grabbed the Q and tracked down the link to their channel so Dee just had to click the link and read the question.
      You could also use a Google Sheet or Doc that is shared and drop the chat message in there.
      I have a video planned on automating Super Chats into a Google Sheet, which is something that can really help streamers.

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  3 года назад

      Sorry if I've missed that, RUclips isn't showing that to me. I'll answer here:
      If you're strictly referring to comments (on a pre-recorded video) rather than the chat in a live stream, then the mod abilities are more limited. In most cases a mod can remove a comment, but there isn't an option to "hide user from channel". Best case would be to let the channel owner know of the comment so that they can deal with it. If the channel owner can give some direction in how they want their moderators to deal with uncomfortable comments like asking too personal questions, then they do have that ability to remove the comment.
      When it comes to comments, if you want to appoint someone to respond and deal with comments on more powerful level, you can add them to your channel as and Editor (Limited) in the Permissions section of Studio. Then they have the ability to respond as the creator, use all the moderation tools (Hide User from Channel, Report Comment, Remove Comment, etc.). Keep in mind, they also get access to other parts of Studio as well (but not everything).

      The moderators I teach about are the ones that help streamers moderate their live chat. In that regard, each streamer appoints their own moderators so you need to become a regular in their community as most streamers only appoint moderators they know and trust over time.

      On a mobile device, it gets a bit cumbersome. You have to copy and paste, which means you might be jumping around a bit.
      One thing to note, if you're using the YT app, if you tap on a person in chat, it gives you the option to go to their channel, and anyone can do that from the chat. You may not need to post the link, rather have people tap on their comments and select the option.

    I wonder if you have any experience of messages 'vanishing' from live stream chats. I say 'vanishing' because the moderators insist they are not deleting/removing them and yet the message in question simply does not appear in the live chat. The message was sent and I can see it in the chat on my PC monitor, yet it is not visible to anyone else watching the stream. It has 'vanished', but how is this possible? This vanishing message issue happens intermittently and happens to about one in every twelve messages I send. It only happens to me (nobody else in the stream chat is affected) and only on this one particular channel. I have over 160 hours watch time on this channel (4th most hours of anyone, only the three moderators have more hours) I am respectful of the channel rules but would never use obscene language or be offensive in any event - Some have suggested the moderators are simply using the remove tool available to them in an effort to discourage me from using the chat but I do not want to believe this is the case as I would be very upset - I would appreciate your thoughts on this and if you can spare 2 minutes I have put a short video on YT to further illustrate the problem complete with actual screenshots. The video is titled 'Why Do RUclips Live Stream Chat Messages Vanish' - Thank you so much for reading my comment.

      I just found your comment in my "Likely Spam" folder. I went to your channel to look at the video you mentioned, but there is no content showing up. Your channel is only a few weeks old - did you comment from the right channel?
      I'm unsure what this chat issue is, but I can tell you that I do encounter people having issues where comments sometimes are not showing randomly like that. Because many chat comments do still appear, its clearly not a channel level ban. I would have to surmise its a RUclips level glitch, whether thats a server issue, connectivity issue, any of these are very possible.

      OK, yes, I should have searched the title, haha! As I mentioned I have been on the other end where I have been moderating a stream and a viewer shares that their chat message didn't come through - sometimes even when trying a Super Chat.
      I've seen in often enough to believe it is a glitch of some kind. Whether a communications glitch between you and the YT servers or something similar like RUclips's built-in filters are incorrectly moderating your messages. If the latter, the mods may see the message appear on their screens but greyed out, possibly asking for approval before showing. If the chat is busy, they may skip over the greyed out messages to deal with the live messages first. It just depends on how those particular mods deal with the greyed out "RUclips moderated" messages.

      @alisonstephenson4621 4 года назад

      @@DougHewsonYT Thank you so much once again for taking the time to reply to my message. After due consideration I don't think the moderators are removing my chat messages because they claim they are not seeing them at all, 'greyed-out' or otherwise. From what you have stated in your reply I conclude the problem is a communications glitch between my PC and the YT servers. Strange though it only happens on this one particular channel's live streams and nowhere else? Perhaps I should hurl my aging PC through the window and invest in a new one haha!! - Anyways, thank you once again for your super-kind assistance in this matter, you have been an enormous help. Xxx

      Only the channel owner can do that. They need to dive into their Studio dashboard, go to *Settings* -> *Community* and find the *Hidden Users* box. Locate the channel and click the X to take their name off the banned list.

    How many people are too much for a handful of moderators?

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  5 лет назад +2

      That's a great question. When you get to a few hundred viewers, you probably only need no more than 2-3 active moderators in a stream. I some streams, I actually step back if we have plenty of mods and maybe interact with the viewers and answer questions instead. I've certainly experienced being the only mod and being tested by a troller or two, even in a smaller stream.
      I think even as you scale to larger streams with 1000's of viewers, you don't need too many moderators. If slow mode is enabled, it keeps it manageable for a small group of moderators.

      @@DougHewsonYT I totally get you 100%. I'm not very strict, but if they were to keep continuing, disrespecting a moderator is a bannable offence. The youtuber I moderate for has about 6 active moderators, and regularly gets about 200-400 viewers per stream. Unrelated; RUclips should make modding easier.

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  5 лет назад +1

      I agree. Disrespecting a moderator should be a ban. 6 for that many is plenty to go around. The good thing is that if a mod or two cannot make it to a stream, there is still enough to take up the slack. Also, mods know its covered so don't feel pressured to have to make it to every stream.
      I agree that RUclips could do some things to make moderation easier, like a separate chat room for the mods and creator only. I reckon we could brainstorm some other ideas as well ;)

      @@DougHewsonYT We have a sponsor discord in which the moderators discuss in and notify the others if they can't make it. It's very useful!
      The seperate chatroom would be wayyy cool! Usually we go back to the discord to discuss things during streams, but the chat will go away. Also, if you're a moderator YT should mandate live chat. Sometimes I forget to put that on, hehe.

    Can RUclips moderators legally discriminate based on Language or nationality and prohibit non-english chat?

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT  3 года назад +1

      I don't know the legalities per see, but I do understand there can be some apprehension if someone is using a language that is not understood by the majority of the people in the chat. I've not come across any specific instances where this has taken place firsthand.
      I understand if the streamer prefers people use the common language, to foster community, but I don't know how I feel about a strict rule on that.
      In a stream I mod on, we sometimes have Pilipinos come in and converse with each other for a few minutes in Tagalog. As it doesn't overtake the chat, or disrupt anything, we're fine with it.

      @@DougHewsonYT My experience was in a Space X Starship related chat hosted by Lab Padre. A person from Russia entered the chat and said "Hello from their hometown name". I had to translate to understand what they had said. I then replied "Hello from Canada". The mod warned us to use English only. But I wasn't sure how the Russian person could understand the warning if it was not translated. I followed up with a statement like "Learning another language is part of astronaut, or cosmonaut, training" translated into Russian. Found that my comment was deleted. Then I asked why and the mod simply said "English only" again. I typed "!rules" and noted no rule about a specified language for chat.
      I was wondering if that is a legitimate case of discrimination and if it is even legal to prohibit other language use on a platform such as RUclips which broadcasts in over 15 languages; they even go so far as to offer automatic chat translation tools in order to encourage an international community. As I come from a bilingual nation it felt unfair to discriminate if they were just saying hello to the world.
      It seems like a form a xenophobia targeting Russian people by the American mods because they often allowed Spanish and French to be included in live chat. I hope there will be better tools so that the community can communicate these experiences to RUclips. Currently it is designed so that myself and the other individual would have been left unaware we were censored and that would result in a feeling of isolation and segregation. Only because I was using a VPN to connect through this account could I see which comments were being blocked.
      As if to mute a persons right to free speech based on ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, religious belief, or nationality. It just seems fundamentally wrong to me. I'm glad to hear that you do not moderate in this way and I appreciate that there are people like you trying to educate the community on how to moderate effectively.

      If by banned, you mean terminated then there's no chance. If you mean you got a strike, then that usually expires after 90 days and you often are required to do Copyright School. You don't lose your channel though. If it's this channel, then you're fine.
      If you're talking about a ban from a particular channel (ie. commenting on a channel's videos or live streams) then you will have to ask the channel that banned you if they would consider unbanning you.
