  • Took me nearly 10 months to finish the project, but the coil winder can now wind both coils (inner and outer) in a matter of minutes. Please take a look at PART 1 of this project at: • Winding copper condens... . Thanks.

    Double helix condenser is the general term used for these condensers, BUT it is actually single-path, double concentric counter-wind coils! :)

    This technique is now being used to heat thermal stores when the solar powered ImmerSuns are over supplying. I have used the 10mm version of this as a heat exchanger, pumped from one tank to a other once the DHWT reached the set temperature. It really amazed me how efficient it was.

    I did use salt for a bifilar-wound cooling coil and you're right; it takes ages to get the salt out. The coil ended up in the bath being filled with hot water, shaken, drained over and over til clear. If I'd thought about it, I'd have put a thin plastic tube in the hot tap and fed it up the pipe.

    • @LouwrensvanderMerwe
      @LouwrensvanderMerwe  6 лет назад

      Getting the salt out is a NIGHTMARE! I now only fill about half of the 3 metre tube with salt and it still takes a while to get the salt out. Sometimes I also have to do the warm water and bath routine like you. I have tried to fill the tubes with paraffin wax and it works like a charm, but filling and removing the hot wax is a big mess if you do 10-15 coils at a time like I do. Cheers.

You can also buy rolls on eBay and Amazon. If you are in New Zealand you can buy copper tube by the metre on Trademe for about NZ $8/metre. In Hamilton and Tauranga you can also buy copper tube by the metre from Wholesale & Industrial Supplies Ltd. Cheers.
