Today we look at my favorite clean up crew for planted fish tanks and aquascapes. I go over the top 4 aquarium community livestock that will help make maintenance a little bit easier.
A clean tank is a stable tank. When people post in forums asking how to deal with algae outbreaks, invariably you will see posts suggesting adding this or that fish to deal with the outbreak. Although effective at dealing with the incidence, it is a poor method because it never addresses the underlying issue that caused the outbreak in the first place. A responsible aquarist should not rely on fish to solve a problem.
A planted tank clean up crew should be used to supplement or augment your good maintenance habits, not replace them.
If applied in this fashion, aquarium clean up crews can HELP keep your tank clean and stable in between your regular maintenance.
My Top 4 clean up crews for a planted tank are.
Shrimp.
Ottocinclus.
Snails.
Corydora.
Any combination of these in a planted tank will help inhibit a myriad of potential issues when paired with regular maintenance.

Good to see you back. Appreciated the honesty on the clean crew for the planted aquarium. I love the look of the L series plecos (when you see them...), but nothing replaces the ecosystem health approach of having shrimps, otos, corys and snails for the planted tank.

So sorry to hear about your hand but very glad to see you making videos again. Great video as always. I keep cherry shrimp in all of my tanks and have noticed a big difference in my tanks because of them. I also have Panda Corydoras in most of my bigger display tanks and they both really help out with my heavy handed feeding. My Panda Cory also breed quite readily. I also have snails in all of my tanks. I prefer the bladder/pond snails only because they seem not to breed as much as the Ramshorn. I have Otocinclus in one of my tanks but I'd love to have them in all of my tanks. Thanks for sharing and as always keep doing what you do if it works for you.

Hey! I learned a lot from your video's to help me with my own aquarium, so thank you very much! I have only one question. I have 3 of 4 mentioned above in my aquarium except snails... I have clown botia in my tank and they are known to LOVE snails as a meal. Do you know of any snail what does the job 'clean-up' wise and where botia's stay away from? Thanks in advance! If you have Clowns you are pretty much assured to not be able to keep snails with them. In SOME, very rare instances, fast breeding pond or ramshorn can oit breed the Clowns and you can keep some...but in most cases the Loaches will just keep eating until they are gone. Even bigger snails that Clowns cannot eat outright will get nipped at and picked on until dead. Probably best to not attempt.
What about Corys, dwarf crays, shrimp, ottos, and some snails? Can they play nice together?
In general yes although dwarf crays have been known to munch on shrimp and be nippy at some fish.
What clean up crew would do well in freshwater thats 27°c-32°c and moving river style slow moving water? Also what plants? Should I consider?
That is a warm range...first make sure you have good surface agitation to allow more o2 to enter because high temps limit gaseous solubility.
For river style tanks use long, thin bladed plants like swords, vals, ferns, crypts etc as their shape is adapted to the flow and they should do well at those temps as well.
Ottos, cory and neocaridina shrimp will all do ok at those temps eveb though it is near their upper limits...but again, make sure the surface agitation has a bit of a roll to it to make sure o2 levels remain adequate.

Ah...i don't have much experience with snakes although i think any cleanup crew you put with it would just end up as snacks

I'll put it in the list. It has been some time since I had a neon breeder tank running but i have some spare tanks around so I'll set one up to refresh myself first and then for sure.
