    A small correction from my side: there's no way an EP2K could be used in Kazan. They change locos (due to electricity current change) in Vekovka, a station some 200 km east from Moscow. EP2K is a direct current loco, while Kazan is located in 'alternating current' region.
    Overall - a fantastic series, thanks! Wish I could take that ride myself.

    Doc. The conditions I experienced were more the result of weather in the entire northern hemisphere that winter. It was a severe year and harvests were not great in Russia, Canada and the USA. I skied in -20 F conditions in New York State, - 25F in March in Quebec and events were cancelled due to temps in western Canada. In the fall of 74 we started skiing on Halloween in the east.
    Yet, after Moscow where we were delayed on arrival by a day due to a blizzard closing of the Sheremet airport, when we got to Leningrad there was no snow and plenty of fruit and vegetables. Learned to love creamed mushrooms while there. The Nevsky Prospekt was open and uncrowded with smiling people. I couldn't believe how congested it was in 2010 with advertising really diminishing the spectacular city center. Having lived in a number of countries while growing up I was surprised on the actual similarities the USSR and the usa were. Did spend an evening in 1975 with a friend and his parents in their apartment in the Lenin Hills. He was a skier in the cross country sport. His parents were teachers at the University up there. They all emigrated west in the Yeltsen years. Good bread, Borscht and stoly that night.

The German trains are somewhat the same hard seats and quite uncomfortable since the y don't lean back, didn't get a sleeper car since it was a day trip to Switzerland.👍

    @doc7austin’s DreamlinerCentral. Very well done sir, with lots of details. I'd like to share one observation. The borscht soup should be served in the deep soup plate. To serve it in a cup is profanation! And, most importantly, to get a real taste of borscht, you should accompany it with at least one drink of vodka! (not beer) :-) Good luck!

    Stayed four nights at the hotel Ukraina in March of 1975. The city was undergoing a toilet paper shortage. NONE AVAILABLE IN THE HOTEL! People were having to use wash cloths and then rinsing them out. There was a shortage also of fruit that winter so it was the first time I had seen scurvy. Three oranges sold on the Arbat black market for the equivalent of 50 euro. The only meat served to foreign tourists during the four dinners served was on the last night. 100 grams of cow tongue...
    Things have definitely improved!

    • @ammm-wq2mz
      @ammm-wq2mz 4 года назад +1

      Funny, the locals in 1975 had a much better life than yours at the Ukraine Hotel. Probably foreigners were bullied on purpose. The only truth is problems with toilet paper. I don’t know what was there with fruits, apples there are then, oranges were not always available. In any vegetable store you could buy carrots, beets, onions, etc. In any restaurant for workers there were meat dishes. On the market you could buy nuts, honey, dried fruits, everything that private traders sold. In the pharmacy, you could buy vitamins, even down to pure ascorbic acid. Maybe you just didn’t know where to find what.

    • @johngrissinger6463
      @johngrissinger6463 4 года назад +1

      @@ammm-wq2mz I learned while there how the arbat worked a little bit. I was there with the US Olympic Commitee, and we were escorted around with inturist guides speaking straight party message that all was fine. My Russian Hockey liaisons were more candid about the health problems going on. Got to witness the guys buying black market gasoline for their Volga auto so they could take me out to see the Party functionaries Dachas. This was early March so much snow. We were having a great time so it until out of nowhere a convoy of spiked tired motorcycles appeared escorting a Rolls Royce with a gumball red light fastened to the roof. My two escorts were freaking. It was Brezhnev! The car passed within 20 meters of us... I kept my camera in my pocket thank god, and I was not dressed as a foreigner so we were ignored. We three peed in the snow and quickly left. Four years later in Lake Placid I chanced to meet one of the two who told me they were visited that night by the gru wanting to know what was going on. They did not get into trouble for taking me out there. I was visited by a member of the US consulate when in Leningrad later who told me that the Russians had requested that I stick to the agenda...

      @@johngrissinger6463 Your memories are really interesting. Then, foreigners from capitalist countries were often assigned special service officers. Guides 100% worked for them. Your movements would not be left without attention. It is strange that they cared poorly about your diet. As a child in the hospital, I hid the meat under an unfinished side dish so that the doctors would not swear that I was not eating well. If you came to visit an ordinary family, you would have been well-fed and happy. :) A lot of time has passed since collapce the USSR, now Russia, by the way of life and assortment of goods, doesn’t different from an ordinary western country, including bad things. Just in the west propaganda is still ongoing.

    Russia is such a mystery, just like who doc7austin is, is also a mystery. Beautiful country, although life is so difficult for its citizens under authoritarian regime. I would be afraid all the time, not knowing if I'm being watched by the government and being followed , like you see in the movies. The trains are amazing, but not sure how they can be profitable with so few passengers, in every video. Nice to see many of these places on video that we've never heard about, but wouldn't want to live there. Also, it would feel so weird not being able to read anything or communicate because of the unfamiliar language and script.

      Maxim, he wrote "7 LARGE railway stations". So do not carp please. Moreover only 3 permanent long-distance trains leave from Rizhski station. And Savelovski station serves only suburban trains at all.

      @@Alex.Pasquale That's not a fault of the stations. Savelovsky, for example, had trains to Uglich, Vesyegonsk, Rybinsk, Leningrad and everything between before they were canceled by the greedy newcomers. Now pasangers who are going there are forced to use uncomfortable connected trains and up to 5x time longer on the road.

    You ought to mention that on Ryazan-Moscow line the trains drive on the "Wrong" side of the road :) Due to some kind of a UK involvement.

      This train approached from Kazan rather than Ryazan, so it only rode for some 25 km from Luybertsy on this left-sided line; and this feature was not quite visible for the author because the line is four-tracked here, with left-sided traffic arranged on two pairs of tracks individually, and Moscow- and Ryazan-bound tracks interleaved.
