FIXES:
The Lion King Game Over screen is actually not from an official release but from a very convincing bootleg community game made by fans called Lion King 5: Timon & Pumba. So fortunately or unfortunately, it is not officially licensed by Disney

“I heard… waves” THAT! I remember exactly where I was. I was immediately sucked in n have become a lifelong fan lol wouldn’t even be who I am without it :’-}
I’m glad so many also remember this feeling :)
God, my first game was kh2 and only cuz my rich well off cousin was dumping his ps2 catalogue, he was a gamer™ that story and RPGs wasnt his thing (blessing for me) and to this day...
Hearing the sounds, the piano, all white, with images of a boy, standing atop of a beach with waves of water slowly cutting in, and heaving the flute end when the starting menu fully manifests, that was the life...
I love Kingdom Hearts. It's the only thing in my life that actually makes less sense the older I get. Specifically the fact that it exists at all.
@@aconcernedindividual297 it’s kind of funny how if it were not for Eisner being a hipster at his approved ideas in the later years like alien encounter and other things kh wouldn’t be the same as it is

FINALLY A KH1 VIDEO WITHOUT A SHITTY SATURATION FILTER
oh is that a thing?
@@mugenbop almost every trophy video
I'm one of the biggest Disney dislikers I know lol. I never liked any of the movies [except for Atlantis] and cannot stand most of the characters. Kingdom Hearts I & II are still somehow two of my top favourite games of all time. That shit goes hard, even if you don't fw Disney like that 🗝 Trust
it’s so hard to sell to ppl that don’t like Disney “I SWEAR it’s actually so much more than that and easy to look past pls give it a chance” but that’s what I always say :’-}
Yeah it's kinda funny when outsiders just dismiss and refuse to give the KH series a shot saying "how the hell am I supposed to take a game with Disney characters seriously? LMAO"
Atlantis: The Lost Empire was so overlooked and had spectacular visuals. Sure the twist villain thing is overdone today, but it was fresh when that movie did it. Maybe not the best twist villain, can think of a couple Disney ones even that did it better later on like in Toy Story 2 and Wreck it Ralph, but still was a rather early example of one.
KH story is not as complicated as some people make it seem.
But I see a lot of people skipping dialogue and whatnot then being confused.
yeah its a little goofy some of the takes but ah well
@@kamikaze5528 I'm sure a lot of it is due to the games story being divided into SO MANY different consoles. I don't just mean later generations. The first time I played KH2, I didn't understand what was going on because I was completely unaware of Chain of Memories on the Gameboy Advance.
I'd imagine a lot of people coming from 2 to 3 had the same experience with 358/2 days being on DS, Birth By Sleep on the PSP, Coded/Re:Coded on mobile phones & DS respectively, and Dream Drop Distance on the 3DS. It definitely wasn't a "one console in the house" friendly series given that every game actually has major story implications.
@kamikaze5528 i wont say you are necessarily wrong but i feel like as long time fans we underestimate a casual person just getting into it. Kh at this point has so much lore to keep track of that its not easy to keeo track of every tidbit. People also start at different points in the series. Lots of retcons happen alongside new infio. For someone who goes into it expecting a simple Disney game they end up being in for a rude awakening.
Hell even for long time fans there are debates in the community on certain lore bits.
At this point kh is crazy with its abundance of lore spanning over 20 years and you either love the crazy wackiness or you hate it or you just simply tune out and play for gameplay.
@@BananaBanditos In II you are supposed to be lost in the beginning, even if you played COM. You'll be able to pick some stuff earlier, but Roxas was a complete incognito going from one game to another.
By III you had all the collections in a single console.
There was the issue of the mobile games, but it's mitigated by Back Cover.
But yeah, I only managed to play BBS on the PS4, diving in before the 1.5 collections was a crapshoot.
@@kita6502 The lore is no more difficult than reading a long running series.
Discussing lore is also pretty common in various series.
It's no more complex than say One Piece (I'd say it's even simpler, actually), Fullmetal Alchemist or A Song of Ice And Fire.
The different jump-on points yeah, playing Days first might be a very strange experience.
8:20 that particular Lion King game over screen actually comes from an unlicensed version developed by a company called Dragon Co.

it cannot be expressed enough how much Nomura was cooking with the KH1 character designs. His master work as an artist
He really expressed character
Kingdom Hearts was my obsession as a pre-teen. The first game is my favorite and the only one I ever replay. Of all crossovers in media, KH is by far the most outrageous yet it somehow managed to work in the best way possible. Almost like magic.
More importantly, I’m really happy you gave a shoutout to The Bouncer! That’s my all-time favorite video game and the prime definition of a “hidden gem.” Tetsuya Nomura’s characters all feel like a family, and I think The Bouncer is one of his most unique works. I love the Dog Street tribute through Pence’s appearances in Kingdom Hearts II and III. I dream of The Bouncer making a return someday.
This wasn't "Video essey." This was experience, where you see random stranger looking something with a smile and go "hey what's that?" and reply is "My childhood, wanna hear a story?"
Thank you Mugen. Don't know if it's game series I ever play, but damn, what a ride it was to listen. It was one of those "once in a blue moon" videos
Thanks man, I’m so glad you enjoyed it like that :)
I think the genius of the subtle Riku/Sora rivalry at the very start of the game is a very important. That kind of rivalry is easy for most people to relate to, and it's very easy to make people feel it without outright saying it. The game doesn't force it so you feel like you have that rivalry, not just Sora. Instead of ham fisting it down your throat with blunt dialog like "Riku, my greatest rival. I will surpass you!", It allows you to actually relate to Sora and feel like you're imposing your own ambitions on him instead of playing out pre programmed ambitions. Being able to do that right off the bat with a brand new character goes a long way in building that attachment that keeps people around.
Absolutely. It allows us to feel that rivalry naturally.
Even in that first cut scene where Riku says Kairi is as lazy as Sora and how she doesn’t deny it, showcasing that there is something there, Sora and Riku starting the race Kairi starts sitting down while she’s standing and both are immediately ahead of her and she’s laughing, but Riku is in the lead.
The Final Fantasy trio on the island don’t even rub Sora being worse than Riku in his face. They are just playing with him as well, they just take it for granted and treat it as such that Riku is stronger (because he is at the start).
The score keeping, Riku’s nonchalance and cool guy act, it allows adds together in a way that makes the player want to go “I’m going to beat you Riku! Somehow, I will beat you.”
I really do hope that Square Enix sees this (since they watch videos like this) and keeps in mind exactly what’s so special about their game. I’m not saying not to mimic everything they did in KH1, since the series is a different beast all together, but I know there’s something that they can take from it.
The rubery in the characters animation during cutscenes is something that a few of us noted with Donald and Goofy during the kh4 trailer. Its good to see they will dive even deeper onto that while still make make it all fit together in a Square like game
11:55 Bro made me feel like I was living that magical moment all over again 😭
I'm glad bro :)
I remember on my first play through when I got past the fight with riku after defeating maleficent and saw the cut scene with sora, I immediately turned off my console and literally had a crying session. I literally thought that was the end of the game. It was only after thinking about some of the other things that happened around that scene that I decided to go back and get through the rest of the game. Boy am I happy I did that!
Yeah, but that ending kicked even harder, dudes working so hard to get back together only to be separated once again.
Talking about the camera, the original KH was VERY different from the versions we have today, there was no analogue analog stick to move the camera, it was on L2 and R2, that shit was pain.
oh god thats right!! I forgot to mention this its been so long :3
I find it funny how the thumbnail has Kairi and the keyblade when Riku exists
he wasnt there at the beach that day my dude ;)
@taputrainer8463 its almost like she is the Crux to Soras story and has been stated multiple times throughout the series to be the most important when it comes to Sora and in the games words "is his light"
@@ShirouBrando I meant Riku should be there too with her
@taputrainer8463 ahh gotcha yeah That's fair
I mostly chose not to include him because it would have felt like too many subjects and detract away from Sora :)
Kairi is the main reason I formerly loved and currently despise Kingdom Hearts. Her mistreatment will never be forgiven or justified by KH4.

Funny how that version of Xiaolang/Syaoran has the same Japanese VA as Sora (Miyu Irino).
And like kingdom hearts Tsubasa’s story takes a massive shift in tone when the Tokyo arc happens.
@@bearerofbadnews1375 the most important thing is not that.
The most important is to PRAY that KH will not end up on an ETERNAL cliffhanger like xXxHolic or other CLAMP works. It was a real miracle TRC series had at least story arcs resolved and finished for "one side of the coin" (while xXxHolic - The other side, "Rebirth/Reverse" story of the series - had CLAMP once again ran out of steam).
Imagine Riku getting a happy end but Sora ending up in an eternal narrative limbo - TRC series suddenly came to a halt that "well".

Nomura is an amazing artist. His style is so visually appealing.
Tech Points are one of the coolest things KH had, and I’ve always been baffled by how they got dropped for the rest of the franchise.
Man, KH1 had so much heart (pun intended) put into it. I remember the day I found it at a pawn shop for just 5 dollars and begged my mom if I could buy it. Time to warm up the food, this is going to be a good one. TIME TO WATCH GREATNESS.
Thanks for letting me be in the video !!
I think Kingdom Hearts is successful in the same way all the Disney Renaissance movies of the 90's were successful. When the best animators, storytellers, musicians, and passionate voice actors and a director with a strong vision come together to create something, it was impossible for that thing to not be good. You can make anything work if the people you work with are skilled and put all their love and dedication into something. I think KH1 was peak, despite KH2 being the fandom's favorite. KH1 was lighting in a bottle and perfectly captured that collaborative core of this franchise that later games tried to emulate and strayed further from imo.

S+ Tier video essay, man. Imma be real with you, when Sora was first revealed for Smash Bros. I was _not_ having it. As someone who has never really interacted with Kingdom Hearts beyond knowing it as that bizarre Final Fantasy x Disney crossover with a convoluted chronology, I thought Sora's reveal was lame, a waste, and... weirdly unsettling.
But... After watching this, I think I understand the hype of that moment, and it's made Sora's inclusion in Smash a lot easier for me to accept.
Banger video, KH is one of my favourite video game series since i was a kid. And this video perfectly encapsulates what this game feels like
Im glad it encapsulates what you feel :)
Back in 2002 Kingdom Hearts and the Final Fantasy 7 movie were the entrance into my love for anime, videogames and (surprisingly) metal music. My best friend back then had the PS2 with this game and the movie. One day when I was with her, she let me play it. And it literally changed my world forever. Before then I don't really had a specific interest. I kinda followed what others liked. But then? Oh boy... It was the beginning of a fantastic time filled with hardships, friendships and a lot of fun and tears. I discovered a whole universe.
Maybe that one single day is the reason, I am who I am today. Sounds kinda cheesy, but I am a romantic ;)
Edit: So thank you for making this essay. It brought me back to an easier time in my life, but also filled me with happiness about the person who I am today thanks to this experience.
what is this amazing thumbnail, I want that as a wallpaper

13:08 pun intended

I love this, auto subbed, great work and as for me the way that I describe KH to people is sorta like this;
Kingdom Hearts story is akin to the ones you see in properties like Kamen Rider or Power Rangers, it may seem childish on the surface but hides a treasure trove of emotions, plot lines, trauma and a maturity/style that 9/10 of other properties in it's industry could never hope to pull off.
This usually gets my buddies to go from meme-ing on the game to actually diving into the heart of it.
Love the porter robinson musician remix as the outro song lmao

The mechanical breakdown early in the video, especially regarding Tech and context-sensitive attacks, is so imperative. People even now don't realize.
As an 8 year old, Kingdom Hearts combat, even Kingdom Hearts 1, *broke video games for me*. I'd played a lot and played plenty after. Other action RPGs even. There just wasn't anything like it.
I mean, even now. Over 20 years later. There's nothing that perfectly scratches that itch.
Elden Ring comes close, but there are very good reasons I have replayed KH1,2 and yes even 3 multiple times over the years.
FFXV had a similar quality to the way teleporting attacks were handled, and I loved that, but most of the rest of it felt watered down, simplified, unintuitive.
Kingdom Hearts, from the very beginning, was so dynamic and so free with player intentions and context in combat, it could have had the dumbest story or level progression imaginable and would still be extremely worth playing.
By some stroke of genius....everything fits nicely. Even the characters work. It's bizarre.
it's ok, everyone misses the hippo lagoon tree jump until they learn they can extend their jump with an attack

im pretty sure that the reason haley works so well is because he was cast as sora before they even had a japanese VA picked out yet, his voice IS sora's

I have watched a lot of kingdom hearts video essays. Damn near all of them, and while they are all good and it’s unique to the creator’s experience of the game, this is the first video essay I have seen that has truly captured the essence of the game and the beauty of it and have never resonated with someone about the game as much as this. Thank you. (Bonus points for the porter robinson outro)

29:27 Definitely dropping Scan, it's nice if I have a spare point but seeing how much health a boss has, while nice, is never actually that important or useful in battle.
