  • With its constantly shifting sandbars and powerful currents, the maritime
waters along the Jersey Shore have long been recognized as being among the most dangerous in the world. The final resting place for over 2,000 ships and vessels.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, sailors and Sea Captains navigated with not much more than a compass and old charts. Horrific storms and unseen dangers caused many ships to run aground and break to pieces along the Jersey coast.
In 1815, volunteer lifesaving crews made up mostly of local fishermen, were tasked with rescuing survivors. By 1874, 40 U.S. Lifesaving Stations were in operation, beginning with #1 at the tip of Sandy Hook to #40 on Cape May Point. By 1915 , the Life-Saving Service had been incorporated into the new U.S. Coast Guard.

I live in long branch NJ right next to pier village and find this fascinating. I have always wanted to learn about my town’s history and past but never knew how, I would look at books at the library and even head up to the lighthouse museum in sandy hook 🪝 , but never got the full picture. This channel has help me so much and I thank u for ur contribution to this community.
