how did you discover some of your favorite artists?
When all that RUclips beef stuff was going on I found a bunch of small artists I enjoy listening to
oh nice, which beef? feel like there's a been a lot haha
@@brza88 when everyone was going at Dax and then Scru vs Upchurch I think. Lots of reaction videos and collabs came out of that I think.
I saw a little edit of one of my favorite novels with Laufey's song 'Valentine' & now I listen to her everyday lol
I heard doin time on tiktok and i looked it up and all her others songs & i fell in love with Lana Del Rey. I knew her before but never really lokked in to her 🫣
THANK YOU! I am so tired of having the same 5 songs on my playlist, and whenever I go to pre-made playlists it's the same ALWAYS the same TikTok songs and I want to discover smaller artists with more unique music! It shouldn't be this hard to find different music than the same 5 songs!!!
If you need a new song still check out “N6 - Thoughts on all platforms (music video on this channel) ❤️🙏
I’m an artiste from Ghana 🇬🇭, I just put out a new song and I’m sure you’ll love it. Just search for “S.O.V - Point”
Check out my music playlists on here.
Also on this one, where I have an abundance of songs in variety. www.youtube.com/@Lil-Stupid-
As a music artist being discovered is the hardest part! You have to understand that I am not just competing with other artists I am competing with anybody who makes their own content! Because people only have so much time in a day to observe content online! Facts!
Totally agree! We compete with the mainstream while still trying to make original, stylish music, videos and art that we are proud of. It's a lot of work to be independent but at least we're not totally alone on this path. 😉
being an internet influencer isnt the only way into the industry, its just the easiest to do with the least experience.
Sorry but you are facing the consequences of feeding into an oversaturated market of internet musician-influencers.
Many people in your position have made it big by being lazy, while others worked their ass off and never got anywhere.
Do not take these as words of discouragement. Let all words you hear, whether helpful or hurtful, fuel your ambition and spirit
i am not a internet influencer but i understand your point and agree 100%@@blinkerz4676
No cap it don’t matter how good you are
Gen X here. I had to look up all the slang to get through the vid 😂
trying to learn the magic of discovering music on my own so i don’t have to be the fake fan for finding it on shorts or tt ☠️
Frr😂
Gatekeeping because of the way you discovered an artist is completely ridiculous and utterly stupid, Let people enjoy things.
@maximized_1 It's not even a gatekeeping thing for, it's more that I'm looking for that deeper engagement and it gets drowned out so easily by those who find it through short form content.
"please dont skip forward though, it will mess up my yt analytics" got me crackin
The "Charts" function on Rate Your Music can be incredibly helpful for discovering new music. It allows you to sort albums, singles, mixtapes, etc by so many different variables. For example, genres, subgenres, year, decade, descriptors and so much more. Rate Your Music has expanded my music taste by a lot.
rym is most pretentious music site
@@AgnusDei695 @AgnusDei695 although that is true, you fail to see the true purpose of the site. There are so many great artists on there especially in the top 100-1000 albums on there. People get stuck up on how the top 100 is so obviously stupid and not focus on how they are still great albums. Plus you can find more niche artists easily by using list function. Let's say you find a review that really matched your feelings. You can then click on their account and see all the lists they have created. Chances are you will also like what they like. Most RYM users don't even pay attention to the charts because it doesn't matter. I would have never found artists like Shiina Ringo, Songs: Ohia, The Microphones, Neurosis, Seiko Oomori, Sonic Youth without the site.
@@AgnusDei695what is pretentious. People don’t pretend to like something. Rate you music ranks albums on ratings and popularity (highlight popularity) so stuff that maybe is not the best but that a lot of people like will be higher on the list. There is nothing pretentious about anything.
thanks dude, i gotta check that site
ur pfp looks like panchiko
Tip 11: Only listen to the first 15 seconds of a song.
Nah i always have to listen to a song 3 times to like it 😂
speedruning new artists
@@vulee100I discovered a lot
Simply no
I love this so much bc ppl always tell me that I have mid-music taste when I let them listen to my go-to Spotify playlists and I be feeling like I have a personality from TikTok bc at one point I had nothing but TikTok mainstream indie-pop indie rock music on my playlists and I just never knew how to find new music to be "my little secret" until now so this is really helpful. Underrated video😁
discovering your personal taste is a fun process & i'm glad i could be part of your journey. don't worry bout those people though…you should never feel ashamed for enjoying something even if other people call it basic. *you* get to decide what makes you happy, not them
When I was 14/15 I was really into psychedelic rock, the 60s and 70s one and just by curiosity I found like hundreds of artists in the same genre. It's amazing. Now i listen lots and lots of genres, extremely trendy and obscure ones, I just love music:)
As a classical/jazz trained musician, the algorithms on Spotify drive me nuts. Everything sounds generic. I appreciate this video (I'm only 2 minutes in but look forward to it). Surprisingly, this is the only video I've found on this matter. It's unfortunate because IMO Spotify is helping to take the personality of music, which will make sprouting bands lack personality as well. It's all about the live scene for now and you really have to seek the organic music.
Have you heard Outro Tear by the 3 rappers in BTS? It's a rap song that has a very Hans Zimmer-esque production. I'd also recommend Rain by BTS, it's like a mix of jazzy vibes and hip-hop.
I was born in the late 70s but kept up with music trends for a while. I was in my 30s before I realized most of the music I listened to was produced by the same people. Really was an eye opener.
Try Haegeum by korean rapper Agust D - he wrote, composed and produced it entirely himself. Also storyboarded the music vid himself, it's like a whole neo noir crime film lol.
Also recommend his other song Snooze, he asked the famous film music composer Ryuichi to help compose it, very cinematic sounding.
Hey, it's off topic, but your natural voice is really cool! Feels nice to listen to you talk, keep it up)
One thing I personally do is go to a local thrift shop and look if they have any good looking CDs. That’s kinda how I found one of my personal favorite records, Vibe by Jacob’s Ladder. Sure I’ve also found some other gems like some old Hip Hop records like Richie Rich’s Seasoned Veteran, but it’s always a pleasure to see something that’s truly unknown.
#2 “for the faint of heart” lol. ❤😂 seriously though some really good points brought up. Thank you!
Love your video. The method I use is simply just go out my comfort zone and explore, even though that sound so cliche. I'm just trying to find good albums in every genre and subgenre out there, from future funk to deathcore. But of course, once I found something I really like, I stick to artists that are similar to the one I prefer. Hope you found this helpful. Cheers.
Where do you look for albums?
Listening to internet radios is a good way to find artists in in bigger scenes.
And for more niche genres i personally try to look for DJ sets/mixes, and what the other artists on their labels do, and if they've been on different labels the checking out the people there usually gets some good results
This was super helpful man, thank you!
you can also find your fav artist's music label and find similar artists signed there. It'll work as long as its not a giant label like warner brothers or rca that has thousands of artists
on the EDM side of things, theres a label called Monstercat, and I follow every release because they have such great quality control and many, many of my favorite edm artists have released under them before. A bit of a hidden gem I would say
The yeat record part killed me
started watching the vid assuming your a super popular music creator but dam you make good ass content for not a whole load of awareness. good shit man
i saw this vid a couple months ago, im glad its gaining traction
this video is a hidden gem.. coming back to it after like a year
For me, sometimes if I find somebody who posts really good songs on their socials or references really good songs similar to my taste, I will try to find playlists or stories from them to find more of what they listen to, with the hopes of finding something new
What type of genres you usually like?
I am not alone! Thanks. Part of it is laziness just listening to what pops up but it looks like it takes a little effort to get past the big label artist wall. I've tried guessing artist names to see what comes up, your ideas are much better:-)
Love this!! Always lookin for new music
lmk what works best for you 🙂
ruclips.net/video/HEJ2ppkA3Xk/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Good video! I'll take number 10 even further and say to figure out who mixed/mastered the song. You may find you like a certain finish on the tracks you listen to.
one way i like finding new music is by just looking up a genre i like on spotify and going to the playlists and scrolling until i feel like i went far enough, found my favorite album of all time like that
Thank you for all this information
I too once looked up with whom my favorite artists are also working together just to find out they produced another style I could not find myself up to. I found like 7 artists and nothing really compares to them even recommendation lists try hard to convince me otherwise. It just doesn't work. Because once I found an artists music or band to cater to my interests, it is also when it exceeds my wants and needs so I can not go for ten different bands literally producing the same or similar music style. I've been a great admirer for psy trance once. And it is easy to find the two orthree spots to buy new records on the fly if I wanted to. But having had dozens of records on the music, given all its sub styles, made me feel tired to listen to.
Khruangbin is sooo good. It's really a vibe
i always check the favourite albums of the people who follow me or that like an album i like too on aoty, ie the parasocial version of asking your friends lmao, found so much stuff that way
Fire tips! Thank you💯
the discover section of Spotify is really good too
Rhythm games made me listen and enjoy stuff that i normally wouldnt even think about, trough like various different genres of music and made me find a bunch of good music by just playing them
Thanks bro, cool video
Finding specific channels on RUclips who make good mixes. For those into Indie/ Chill/ Variety: Mol (that’s his channel name) has fire playlists
(no shameless plug)
I feel that finding ur channel is my little secret
i love going through movie or show sound tracks!
I'm right here guys! Congrats you just discovered my music my friend😉
Very useful tips, thank you man
Word up, dude. Love the video.
Thanks for the tips, I'll probably watch multiple times to get everything you're saying! One thing I would recommend is maybe changing some of the background music or effect music, the trumpet announcement thing is clashing with the chill music. I recommend adding a different sound effect that's more subtle, and maybe reducing the volume of the background music or (I personally prefer) removing the music entirely or using very soft ambient.
Interesting topic 🔥🔥🔥
Local music store tossed out Madhouse-Nixon's Ego Trip, and now it's one of my favorites from that era.
Nice video! Maybe you could do a video from the other perspective? Like how to get discovered as a music artist? I think that would be cool to see
For me the way I discover new music is I pick a song that I listen to from an artist where they only have 1 popular song. I check out that artist’s other songs cause most of the time, nobody actually listens to the other songs cause that artist is only a one hit wonder. I feel bad for one hit wonders tho cause their other songs are probably even better that their one hit wonder song
Thank you for the info. I find new music by watching the what’s in my bag videos from Amoeba
whats the song at the start?
This actually happened to me. My manager knows all my favorite songs and ive never told him about them. He just plays songs at work and he just happens to play the exact same music I listen to and none of it is exactly popular
Thankful for the algorithm to show me this video (a year late, but still)
I do use the RUclips recommendation algorithm, _but_ _it_ _is_ _crucial_ _to_ _keep_ _it_ _trained_ . Start the recommended music video but don't let it run too long (few seconds max); go to the artist's channel immediately and check the number of subscribers. Then only check out artists with a relatively small number of subscribers (few hundred max ideally), that is where the most creative and original music is to be found. Eventually the algorithm gets the hang of you liking niche artists in your favourite genres and starts recommending the good stuff instead of the average commercial nonsense.
Note of caution: the recommendation algorithms have a very strong tendency to mean-revert to mainstream commercial stuff as soon as you watch any of that. If you DO want to check out something mainstream then ideally do that from a different computer and not logged in; this prevents the algorithm from mean-reverting to commercial stuff because it doesn't go into your watch history.
The best thing about listening to small artists is that you will find little in the way of reviews and other people's opinions, which means you are actually _forced_ to learn to listen properly and form your own opinion about those artists' music.
For convenience I use music apps. But for learning more I go out to thrift stores. Some of the stuff I love with all my heart isn’t even out there on anything. It’s amazing some of the stuff people leave behind that’s why I have cassettes cd’s and records so I have a wider reach to new artists and genres
Can’t relate wave savers was a recommendation from Spotify and I love all there song and there underrated af
LOVE the Peggy shirt!
you have a good voice. just thought you should know.
I love system of a down, searched the specific subgenre up, but couldn't find anything like them :')

Try Linkin Park, Korn, Slipknot and Skindred
@@mdaadldei hello, yeah, i have been giving KoRn and slipknot a chance, so far really enjoying their stuff! Might take a look at Linkin park and the other one u mentioned, thanks!
@@mdaadldeiI love skindred
😁 watched the entire thing. get your bag
Everything he listed I lowkey been doing for over a decade. Use every avenue to find new music that resonates with you.
Good tips! One way I find new artists or musicians is from movies. I'm a music composer and my ears are always listening when I watch a movie or TV Show. Especially the international movies, cartoons and TV Shows. Side note: you laughing at your own 'meet cute' joke made me laugh. 😄
Have you heard Snooze by a korean rapper Agust D? He asked the famous film music composer Ryuichi to help with the composition, so it's got a cinematic sound to it which I really love for hip-hop songs. I'd also recommend his other song Haegeum, which he wrote, composed and produced by himself. He mixed in an old traditional Korean stringed instrument with a modern beat, very cool.
@@JaneTB612 I haven't but I will look him up! I like Korean pop/indie music and Ryuichi Sakamoto. This sounds like a good combination! Utada Hikaru also used a sample from "Merry Xmas Mr. Lawrence" and made it pop/hip-hop. Thanks for the recommendation. 😊
@@soulfulandnice Ohhh nice! Agust D is actually a rapper in BTS lol. Their rapper's stuff is very hip-hop. I'd also recommend Outro Tear by their 3 rappers, I think the production has a very Hans Zimmer-like sound. And I used to listen to a lot of Utada! I'll have to check that out, thanks for the rec too 🥰
nice suggestions
Good to see anothër yeat fan 🤟😎 thx for the helpful tips
why his his voice so nice omg
Calming voice
Honestly, I just wanna know the title of the song playing in the background
I honestly don’t know how I found really small and unique music artists cause I started out listening to a lot of mainstream artists and bands before I started listening to vocaloid and finding artists like maretu, guchiry, and parsley onuma. I think most of that led me to listening to more original songs by utaites like luz which introduced me to visual kei music somehow?? I started off listening to really small bands like Amai bouryoku and zombie before getting into more popular bands like mejibray, malice mizer, gulu gulu, dadaroma, and Versailles. I decided that I liked the sound of dadaroma, amai bouryoku and gulu gulu better so I found smaller bands that were in the menhera kei sub genre and that sound similar like jigsaw, lyrica, or lamiya. After that I got into more j-rock and found artists like the oral cigarettes or 9mm parabellum bullet
Liner notes used to be a big way for me to find new music
I swear the music you used in the background I've heard in vrchat a ton
hahah, thanks! ur cool!
gotta check those “artists you might like”, skim those artists and their features. then your recommended songs start getting more obscure
What’s the Song Name?
Sometimes when watching a TV series a song might pop out. I will then go do a search on that TV series, and look for the song. Does take time.
like this song, found while watching a Netflix series
Adele H - Gnossienne No. 1 (Erik Satie)
I love finding new stuff through DJ mixes. The Moment YT channel has a large collection of RnB, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, etc... which is a great source for artist discovery (And finding the samples to new songs). Other than that, I also tend to look for 1hr+ playlists of random music, and peruse around the creators that make those songs. There are tons of stuff to look into and get a feel from. I personally browse by genre. Try everything you can find!
Here's a couple recommendations from me:
DnB (Drum and Bass)
Intelligent DnB
Breakcore
Jungle
House
Techno
Hip-Hop
Latin Jazz
Jazz Noir
Jazz Rap/hip-hop
Samba
Bossa nova
Acoustic folk
Salsa classics
Reggaetón classics
Shoegaze
Indie rock
Math Rock
Alt-Rock
Classic Rock
Post hardcore Rock
Grunge
Nu metal
And much much more!
American mainstream music is mainly Rap/Pop/Rock/Country; European is Pop/Rock/and different sorts of Rave music. Genres we share are reinvented by another, and the ones we don't share make us even more unique, so be sure to browse other countries too!

Any tips for getting into rap? I just haven't found any artists that I really like but it seems to be something everyone else loves
doom
bro some people just arent into rap, but maybe try some older stuff, the style tends to be pretty different nowadays so you might find something you like from the past.
"rap" is an umbrella term for a ton of different genres and styles…you could be super into one kind of rap and really not into another. a good starting place is spotify's official hip hop playlists, they cover a lot of the bases (Mellow Bars for chill rap, Spilled Ink for underground stuff, etc)
You might want to look into the history of hip-hop culture, learn some context.
Back in the day there were more hip-hop purists and they were wary of pushing boundaries, people like Atmosphere or cLOUDDEAD were hardly respected. Nowadays there's a lot of variety, from clipping - who make concept albums - and Death Grips to JPEGMAFIA to emo rap and whatever you might dig.
Khruangbin is so so good
i actually follow a meme account on istas but he has some fire ass music recs
@?
1:08 bro you watching me!?
One thing is to look up local artists and bands in your state, you will find alotttttttttt
This is a rather West-centric response, many countries might barely have local scenes attractive enough to angsty youth with access to the Internet. Imagine living in a backwater place where people still think they are cool for being into Pink Floyd, while you got into math rock and midwest emo.
damn you bump underscores too?
i might just listen to you yet /j
Under appreciated artist here! Everyone send some love where it counts :')
Small artist always make the best music , and I'm tired of listening to the same music promoted throught TikTok of Shorts just because its paid to be promoted or made by a popular artist ... And finding smaller Artists becomes very hard and rare .
