Roy Tarpley (21pts/20rebs/11offrebs) vs. Lakers (1988 Playoffs)

  • Just a reckless game by Roy Tarpley which yielded both good results and bad. Tarpley sprints up and down the court like a mad man, hustles his tail off on rebounds and defense, yet also attempts 24 field goal attempts (and makes seven of them). In the end, it was just what Dallas needed as they got to 1-2 in the series playing in front of a roaring Reunion Arena crowd. Tarpley was the Player of the Game and it's safe to say that you'd take some of the less successful plays made by Roy in order to get all of the good ones he made.
From Game 2 of the Denver series until Game 5 of this Lakers series (10 games total) Tarpley averaged 18.6 points and 15.2 rebounds per game off the bench. This might have been the best basketball he ever played. R.I.P. May 27, 1988.

Roy the Rebound! Addiction is powerful. He could have been one of the best power forwards in NBA history.

@@vdLeo-je6os to me, he’s kinda like Ralph Sampson in that he showed amazing potential but never reached his full capacity. He and Ralph could’ve had a great rivalry going on in Texas for years if they had both been able to stay clean/healthy.

The '86 draft consisted of Roy Tarpley, Len Bias and Chris Washburn---drugs and alcohol addiction ruined their careers. Dennis Rodman was in that draft too but was able to persevere through it somehow.

He could have been one of the best three power forwards ever played the game. (Of course If he stayed out of drinking alcohol). RIP Roy from an Aris-Thessaloniki fan where Roy Tarpley played in 1992-93 season avg 22 points and 17.5 reb. per game. RIP Roy. Great player, great guy.

The Mavs of those days had Donaldson, Perkins, and Tarpley, and the trio complemented each other very well. Good games of Tarp was possible thanks to the other two (Donaldson working very hard to keep Kareem away from the basket, for example) and vice versa. So nice.

In a parallel world, where West did not veto Roy and Aguirre for Worthy, and where Roy didn't have a drug problem, the Lakers dynasty was even more amazing! Even in this reality, the Lakers would have been okay because Worthy didn't have longevity anyway. Roy drug issues came to light and was suspended by the NBA same year Magic retired. Worthy was no longer Worthy after Magic retired, and had all those injuries.
