It really sounds like I have to put up with abuse from my landlord. I've never missed rent, have no complaints, I take care of my home. Yet my landlord is being so awful to me. Every day I dread not having a roof over the heads of me and my kids. I understand she could be getting a lot more in rent for this unit but I keep up with all my responsibilities. Obviously she has no grounds for eviction, but how is it OK for her to be doing everything in her power to get me out over money she could be getting for the unit? And there's nothing I can do about it? I'm a disabled single mother of 3. I have nowhere to go. I don't know what to do.

My friend is renting a house in Maine. The heating system was broken and it could not warm it up above 50 F. After a whole year of begging her to fix it, she purchased an electric heater, which costs more to the renter to pay for electric bills. Then there is the problem of the drainage system. She frequently needs to use a pump to drain the pipes from the kitchen sink and the basement. The landlord refuses to have a contract because she knows that her house has a lot of problems and she does not want to fix them.

If you have a signed lease you are obligated to pay your rent in accordance to your lease. Your lease is a contract. Have you sent your landlord a written request to fix your issue? Try writing a letter outlining what is the issue that needs to be fix. Having a written request makes a big difference.

I'm finding what the atty say is unacceptable. It's impossible to give respect where there is none; however, I'm not one to put more wood in an inferno I'm trying to extinguish. You can't make a person respect you; however, you can refuse to be disrespected. It's as if this atty is saying to the viewers to acquiesce obsequiously. I'd feel akin to my ancestors whom were sold into chattel slavery. This is atrocious behavior, of which, is swept under the rug; the piling up of atrocious behavior under the rug is difficult to tread. The atty must be a tyrant. BUMP THAT!!!! My neighbor is a chain smoker, sometimes doesn't sleep so he dictates when I can sleep also. Tried to talk to him and his family members peacefully but they pretend to not understand English or they ignore me as I speak to them and walk away.

What state do you represent. He keeps saying how powerful the landlord is and a tenant should kiss ass. NOT TRUE! You have rights if you're being harassed or living in an inhabitable apt. This guy is giving terrible advise. Who wants to be in a co-dependant where you're getting abused.

You need to listen to the entire interview. What I emphasized is that you have to pick your fights. A landlord can give a 30 day notice to a month to month tenant without a cause. Where will the lower income or poor senior come up with first and last? Will a new landlord want to take on a tenant that had a problem with a prior landlord?
I said NOTHING about living in an uninhabitable apartment. And of you don't think that Landlords have more power than tenants then you are not living in the real world. The intent of the video which I believe is clear is yes tenants have rights but you want to be careful about what you want to fight about. Eric HELPS

I keep my rents below market, My tenants don't want any contact with me, there afraid I will raise there rent. I had one tenant that used a cooler for over a year, because he didn't want to tell me the fridge went out. His neighbor told me. And then you have whiners that complain about everything, and yeah I don't put up with it.

I'm a landlord and very proactive with tenants issues. All problems/concerns are resolved in 24 hours in most cases. That said, there are bad landlords out there...but most are good. If you are not happy with your landlord, just move out. No one is putting a gun to your head forcing you to stay there.

This guy is awful. You as a tenant don't have to put up with slow, unresponsive landlords or property management companies. If you are afraid to complain call your housing Authority. If you don't report repairs you are part of the problem.

Ya know, Landlords only have more power if you buckle under their abuse. If you think turning Landlords in or holding them accountable is detrimental to the tenants, then your organization is part of the problem. Maybe if the landlords followed state, federal laws and building codes, and HUD policies if they were part of that program tenants would not have to fight for repairs, major or simple. Here in Montana, they must have cause, Montana tenants have the right to clean, safe, sanitary rentals. By Law, the landlord must provide hot water and maintain the property. If you do not report repairs and hold Landlords and Property Managers accountable for repairs you end up with Long Term Deferred Maintenance issues: cracks in load-bearing walls and ceilings, no hot water, windows that do not fit in their frames, mice, and other problems leading to building decay and eventually being condemned leaving all us Senior/disabled tenants out in the street anyway. Stand up fight back you pay for the space, you are paying for services the landlord must provide by law. Letting them skirt is not a solution! It is complete ignorance. I have taken on More than one Landlord and because I pay my rent in full and on time there is nothing they can do except the repairs or face the consequences. If I have to pay my rent even if the Landlord does not make repairs, I have every right to hold him accountable by any and all means afforded by law. Landlords believe tenants don't know the laws, they are mostly right. Some of us study state and federal laws, building codes, policies, and any other authoritative literature so that we can protect ourselves and others. Landlords bully tenants because they think they can get away with it, they only have the power you give them. EQUAL UNDER THE LAW, but not by Landlord whims,@@HELPSNonprofitLawFirm

@@quotestotez1676 I agree with everything you say. However it is not a perfect world. Unfortunately, not all seniors have the fortitude to deal with an uncooperative landlord, nor the hutzpah to deal with a jerk landlord. They get taken advantage of by landlords. And many don't have access to legal help. They are not like you. The point of the video if you listen to it is that you have to pick your battles with a landlord. Not all tenants receive the protection of subsidized housing. And you are aware of 30 day notice? Eric HELPS
