Hello @ LFR FAMILY! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appeared on our radar..
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! That's a hard one to start the Nightwish journey.. I'll give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan:
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

highly doubtful, there are many other female singers with wider range. this girl mostly does opera and tries to go the highest pitch other than diversifying it. Why do you think the bassplayer sings? because Floor can't hit the pitches he can. Bands with 2 different singers do it because one singer can't do what the other can.

Floor is VERY, VERY diverse. Do your research before randomly claiming stuff you can't back up.
Also Marko singing doesn't mean anything, he sometimes has his own songs/own verses & most of the time just harmonizes with Floor. Has absolutely nothing to do with pitch.
P.S: Floor "mostly" doing opera, is again a baseless claim. She sings in varying styles, Tarja was the one mainly focused on opera-singing.

This song starts with "The End" and if you look up the lyrics ends with "The Beginning". The female singer is 6' 1" and 173lbs. She's married to a drummer for the band Sabaton and he's 6' 7". She's probably the primary female (soprano) singer in the world right now. BTW, the songwriter is the piano player. The song also parallels the life and death of Edgar Allen Poe who wrote novel The Pit And The Pendulum but was also written because a rift in the band when he had to fire his childhood friend, Tarja the first female singer for the band. He caught a lot of shit with hate mail because of that firing. He felt like committing suicide but wrote this song instead. Tuomas the pianist writes 95% of the songs. The lyrics probably meant he erased everything he ever wrote. Kind of erased his life.

A few of their songs are long master pieces like this. More like musical theatre than something you would rock out to. Most of their songs are shorter but still very well written and quite dramatic. They are a Symphonic Metal band. because of this they have very different sounding songs, from Heavy, to folk music, and use a wide variety of instruments. They aren't for everyone but most people can at least appreciate the talent even if the music isn't for them. Liked and ready to sub at the next NW reaction :p

Took a lot of grief and dealt with great depression contemplating suicide, but instead kills himself in this song. Guys...🖐 the Poet and the Pendulum 🤘
    As a first.....ow boy!
This is imo their best song, the backstory, the lyrics, the music 👌😎
There are 3 great songs...dare i say epic?
This one, Ghost love Score and the Greatest show on Earth.
Normally i would say do Ghost Love Score 1st. After that do some other songs like Storytime, Romanticide, Song of myself, Yours is a empty hope or 7 Days to the Wolves 😋 evt. some other songs and then go for The Poet and the Greatest show....they both need some homestudy...just some. To know what the songs are about.
Nightwish has 9 studioalbums and are at their best live! Wacken 13 (a must watch, pick a song any song and you are in for a treat) London 15 (which this song is from) Tampere 15 or Buenos Aires 18 👌🤘
Comic con???? What...never been there, probably never will be!
Ehm Beyonce.....🤔 yeah she is Good but Floor Jansen 6ft 1 is something else, she is our Valkyrie our Angel of music! She has a range that is fingerlicking 4 octaves someone mentioned. She does lows (growls) and with no problem goes high D6 (for 8-10 sec)is the highest i know and me thinks on the new album she even goes higher.
If you want you can check out Beste Zangers 2019 a dutch tv show with singers doing their stuff, not a competition btw.
Floor sings songs there in German, Spanish, Dutch and English. She does a lovely version of Shallow 😘 and then there is The Phantom of the Opera..ow boy..she sings this with Henk Poort (Mr Phantom in the Netherlands)...let me say it this way..all the other versions are ruined for me...it is That Good! 😎
Well hey Thnx for this! As stated this is a awesome band and if you choose to go on this journey, you will be in for a Epic ride.
Have Fun and Enjoy it All!

This one is deep. Tuomas, the keyboardist/composer/songwriter, wrote this after the band's first singer, Tarja, was let go from the band. Tuomas and Tarja grew up together and Tuomas centered the band around her. Some say he was romantically interested in her. Tarja married her agent and he basically had too many demands or else. To avoid conflict, Tarja was let go. Tuomas became depressed to the point of suicide. Not only did he think the band was over or that he lost the fanbase, he also lost his lifelong friendship. His mother and father consoled him and was his last lifeline.

  • @sashadeea
    @sashadeea 4 года назад +3

Ok, so you guys have no idea about the band, the history, or anything else about this song which is a shame. it's actually wrong on so many levels to react to this song without a background check first.
So first of all Nightwish had another singer by the name of Tarja Turunen. She was Tuomas's (the keyboardist) crush in high school and one of his closest friends. He is also the main composer of the band and the creator of the band since you had such a nice time making fun of him without checking first. In 2005 he was forced to fire Tarja because her behavior became a problem to the band as she became so full of herself she refused to go to rehearsals, or go to a tour in America, demanded more money and a private tour bus for herself and her husband who was the manager of the band at the time. She also said that she was the voice of Nightwish and she wants to leave the band a be a solo artist and without her, Nightwish will no longer exist. All of the members became frustrated about the situation there were fights, demands, and stress around the band members so they all voted her out and gave her a letter which later was published for the fans in order for them to understand why. After this Tuomas was cursed and judged by the fans and the blame fell on him. He considered suicide but instead, he composed this song as a reflection of his feelings. The verse "being raped again and again" is a metaphor for being so judged by the press the fans and everyone around him. This masterpiece has so much feeling, suffering, and pain behind it. So next time you react to a song do your research and stop judging without knowing the whole story. Me as a fan I'm disappointed about your remarks.

This is like diving straight into the deep end of Nightwish world. This one needs the back story of the keyboardist, Tuomas, and a really dark spot in his life. He basically writes and composes 90+% of their music.
From Wacken 2013, Ghost Love Score, Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide (a really heavy one) are better introductions to Nightwish, all excellent songs by the way.
After that from Buenos Aires in 2018 e.g. Devil and Deep Dark Ocean, Slaying the Dreamer and then slowly moving deeper into the rabbit hole with celtic vibes, soft ballads, really heavy songs, more of power metal, more proggy, more poppish and everything in between. In a few even some jazzy vibes.

Usually reactors see Poet after they fall farther down the Nightwish rabbit hole and are encouraged to research it first. It was very interesting watching you without you knowing what the song is about. Floor Jansen is the Nightwish Army’s Valkyrie and yes, she does work out. I'm just starting the video, so don't know if you touched on this, but this is a hightly personal son for Tuomas, the keyboardist and writer of the song and most if not all of Nightwish's songs. This was written after the band parted ways with their original singer, Tarja. It was contentious to say the least and there was a lot of flack thrown around. It's about as personal as a song can be.
Edit:Don't think of necessarily Floor singing the song, but Tuomas expressing himself though the band as a whole. I believe this is him, symbolically committing suicide. I think this is very hard for him to perform and band members have been seen checking on him mid performance.

He writes most of the songs but not all of them. Marko is also a good songwriter. However, all of them play/participate in other projects so they pick which songs to do as Nightwish and which to do elsewhere. Marko often sings with the band Delain as well as his own band. Tuomas and Troy perform in Auri with Tuomas' wife Johanna as the third member. Emppu appears with Brother Firetribe though I haven't seen anything recent from them. Floor pops up in several places; Beste Zangers, Northward, guest with Epica, guest with Kamelot... Kai is also very versatile. He was previously the drummer for Wintersun.

Welcome to your first stop of a long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey. I hope you enjoyed your first Floorgasm :-)
My personal suggestion for the next songs in order to give you a nice overview of some "styles" covered by Nightwish:
-> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast
-> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide, Last Ride of the Day, Ghostriver
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls)
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead)
-> Then the new stuff with "Noise" (Video), „Shoemaker“, "Harvest (Lyric Video) ...
    Just my personal thoughts :-)
One thing you can definitely be sure of: Every song is different, has some surprising transitions, is intense. And none of the songs you're going to discover will disappoint you.

You`d be surprised who actually shows up to theyr concerts, and even more, what theyr fanbase is. Its everything from pure classical opera lovers,pop,rock,hiphop....you name it. People gets introduced to Nightwish especially after Floor joined, and they are HOOKED. Whenever you check out songs they did at Wacken 2013,you will even see some of the darker brothers in the crowd clinching theyr fists, and pumping it to the beat. There is no real stereotype Nightwish fanboy or fangirl, they come all shapes, sizes, colours etc. The confusion seems real amongst all 3 of you,and im not surprised. You dove right into that 1 song about depression, suicidal thoughts and anger from a piece of history for this band. As someone else mentioned, you should have been introduced to some of theyr other songs first,so you would get to know them more. Understand the history behind the band and such. This is wild territory for anyone who hasnt the slightest idea on what deep depression is,even worse when you cant imagine why the lyrics are so dark in the first place. Basically childhood friends that all of a sudden got torn away from eachother,by greed and what not....some third party jackass who had left all his morales in the gutter, and Tuomas got the blame for it all over an extent of time, both from media and from many of the diehard fans. He then developed depression, and things allmost took a turn for the worst, but luckily.....he wrote his own suicide instead of taking his life, turned it into a masterpiece about/around mental health. Theyr other songs are much less "confusing",you got alot of good stuff ahead of you! ;) 16:07 Needless to say, this was Tuomas`s own song about his own biggest battle in life at that point,a song that really hurt him to perform. And that upcoming part Mother and Father had him actually sing along for the first time, because that is the exact words his mom told him, comforted him with. That made him realize,he had to get his sh*t together,as well as get help instead of taking "the easy way" out. Thats also why Floor is checking on him from time to another during this song, and Marco & Emppu walks over to him at the end,to show him "we are here for you, brother!". Marco especially has a few really concerned looks over at Tuomas, before he walks over with Emppu. They all know this song means alot to Tuomas, and is really difficult for him to perform. Tuomas is at a much happier, healthier place theese days...thats also why he never wants to play this song live anymore. No point in ripping up old wounds so to speak.

You were right about one thing: this is more like play than a song. Tuomas is a poetic story teller. Every song he have ever right based on a story. And this is also a play you really have to know the backstory before you fully understand what is going on there. So I recommend you to read the sad story behind this - he lost his dear friend in this scandalous episode in 2005. Why he looked as he looked in this video is because he ever didn't want to play this song live because he didn't want to feel the pain again he felt at the times when he wrote it out himself, in deep depression - but the audience demanded them to play it. So, Tuomas often asked his buddy to mute his ear monitors that he couldn't hear the lyrics while playing it.
Beautiful masterpiece! Thanks for reacting to it.

I'm not sure if you were trying to be insulting with your comments about ComicCon fans, but I have many friends who are serious classical musicians. I have introduced all of them to Nightwish at various times, and they have all become firm fans. The Nightwish fan base is marked mostly be a deep understanding of music, and a refusal to be fobbed off with lukewarm "pop divas" who for the most part can't even sing during their own performances.

The song is about the first Singer Tarja Turunen who was fired by Tuomas the Writer of all the music.

This was written right after the band decided to fire their original singer, the highly celebrated Tarja Turunen. Many fans turned away from the band and most people blamed Tuomas as the leader and main composer/lyricist of the band even though the decision was made by the entire band. Their second singer, Anette wasn't really liked by many. So Tuomas got a huge amount of hatred he even thought of ending the band. So in his own words "In this song I killed myself so I didn't have to do it in real life". This is their third and in my opinion best lead singer, Floor Jansen, a dutch woman who joined them during an American tour when Anette fell ill and was hospitalized. Since her relationship with the band was deteriorating fast anyway, the band decided to let her go. Floor had only 2 days to learn the entire setlist of 15 songs.

I think in order to understand the band and it's fan base you have to know a bit about the band first, what drives it and the pure creative inspiration that is Nightwish. So, here's the skinny on what's been happening with Nightwish through the years, the decades. Floor is the third singer, believe it or not The Phantom of the Opera performance was Tarja's (the first singers) last performance before the band had to let her go: ruclips.net/video/8VgLKXD-BoY/видео.html The reason being that she never really felt like this was her path. Originally, when Nightwish was formed it was going to be more of a classical based band. Tuomas, the keyboardist, writer, and composer of ALL their music, noting Tarja's operatic training brought her into the fold and basically formed the band around her voice. Being that they were all good friends and growing up together, it was very hard for them when she started to drift away, missing the practices and started making statements about leaving the band. Some credit her being influenced by her businessman husband Marcelo Cabuli, who was incidentally overheard on numerous occasions making statements that "Tarja was the face of Nightwish" and that she "could do much better without the band". Floor was actually the 'fill in' singer back when Tarja started missing the practices. Then they hired Anette (the second singer) and she was with them for a time until the whole debacle at the Denver concert when they all got seriously sick and she had to be rushed to the emergency room... then she broke her ankle in a fall when she was pregnant. At that point Anette just wanted to heal, have her baby and be close to home. So they moved Floor to the position of lead singer. The song The Poet and The Pendulum, which was written and wholly composed by Tuomas, was all about the dark time around when they had to ask Tarja to leave. Tuomas and the band suffered depression over their feelings of betrayal, especially Tuomas who was affected the most, to the very point that the band, family, and friends were worried about him committing suicide. You can see in The Poet and The Pendulum that it's his journey working through that depression, those dark times. The Poet and The Pendulum was Tuoman's written suicide, instead of doing the actual act. The very last words of the song are about forgiveness, love and making a fresh start, "In the end I will always love you....The beginning". So very very hauntingly beautiful.
Also you will notice that the drummer Jukka Nevalainen was replaced by Kai Hahto due to Jukka having debilitating insomnia. Also you really need to check out their Greatest Show On Earth performance. By this point they have also added a remarkable multi instrumentalist with Troy Donockley. As a warning, the song is roughly 21 minutes long but well well worth the watch: ruclips.net/video/aTAaEHiGjvU/видео.html There are many many songs where Marco (the bassist guitarist) and Floor harmonize beautifully both of their amazing vocal ranges a compliment to each other.
As I mentioned above Tuomas (the keyboardist), other then doing the odd collaborations every now and then with other members of the band, writes not only ALL of NIghtwish's lyrics, but writes the music for ALL the instruments, as well as writes ALL the orchestral music you will hear playing in the background of their songs. He is a complete musical genius and will go down as one of this generations greatest composers.
As always listen, appreciate, and enjoy!! God Bless!!!

actually, prior to Tarja the band was of acoustic variety and the hardly knew each other in high school..further, she did not drift away but after 7 years of having her basic concerns ignored announced that she was leaving after the 6th album..then the band started to drift away from her with Tuomas anger growing over losing an irreplaceable vocalist(his words) ..this song is Tuomas's way of playing the martyr and purging himself of Tarja

actually, Tarja declared her desire to go so 2 years prior to break up...she married her manager and moved to Argentina...they agreed that she would remain for a bit but on her terms for, for a change : shorter tours, larger venues with less frequency'(to preserve her voice and overall health), better hotel and travel accommodations...no more life on a 24 hour liquor and smoke filled party tour bus, with greater privacy and time for herself...Tarja has documented proof that when she was timely informed of events, she made every effort to comply but was not utterly consumed by the band's business, planning her own solo career ..the depression , allegedly, suffered by Tuomas was not due to feelings of betrayal, since he felt no compunction regarding the letter he posted but rather from the avalanche of critique from seemingly everywhere for the terms painting Tarja as a greedy diva who lost interest in the fans ...an image directly opposite of the truth to be known to all

That's a pretty steep and heavy entry into the Nightwish rabbit hole 🤣🤣🤣
A lot of people -- including those in the comments here -- will tell you that you need to understand the background of the lyrics. You don't. This song perfectly embodies the various stages of depression, something a lot of people can relate to or empathize with. In fact, the composer of the song Tuomas is of the opinion songs should be open to one's personal interpretation.
Having some understanding where he is coming is from will provide some context on things that happened in his personal life but not having that context does not diminish the power of the song itself in any way shape or form.
That said I hope you guys will take some of the suggestions made on this thread, they are truly an amazing band.
