    Actually, in "tournament play", it is against the rules to call lines "tight". The new rule in 2021 and forward says you must call the ball IN unless you CLEARLY see it out, ie: space between the ball and the line. Therefore, all disputes go the IN column, not the OUT column.

      I wonder what would happen, in a tournament if let’s say singles to bring the amount of eyes down. Player 1 hits a ball at the NVZ and almost falls in. Power toes the line while the other player gets excited and hits a Ernie and it whips past player 1 shoulder in a downward motion. It’s pretty high tho. Both players recover player 1. Asks was it out because they thought it would be. The other player jumping thru the air says idk. And then correct them self and says I think it was out. But an official over hears and says if you didn’t see it, it must be called in?
      I’ve done things similar to this where I’ve hit a ball and the other side hits a ball over and i duck or am unbalanced to look at the ball. It’s just an interesting thing

      Playback at 0.25X and sure enough the ball is in but somehow he calls it out and he is absolutely certain that he is right. How can someone be so certain and be wrong at the same time. If it is close I call it in. I don't get paid to do this.

    So frustrating on middle line serves and aces when they are called out because the receiver is under pressure. I sometimes call the lines too tightly but then there’s also parallax issues on sidelines when I see space between the ball and the line from the far side versus my partner who’s closer to the bounce. If partner calls it good then benefit of the doubt goes to the opponents and ball is good. Too often when the situation is reversed it becomes
    “I think that was out, it was hard to tell, what do you think partner?”
    “I couldn’t see it clearly, but if you thought it was out, then it’s out” or similar words to that effect.
    Sometimes opponents will offer to replay the point after they’ve suffered a stunning winner, which tends to deflate the team that hit the called out winner, nothing like a good ol’ reset in the middle of the game, or better yet, the match winning point.

    Interesting choices of video to prove your points. 1st Example - ball on court: as can happen, the guy with the obvious put away missed his shot and it was returned as a winner. Had they not made the call, "ball on court" they would have won the rally and it would not have been played over. The "obvious" (potential) winner of the rally with the put away is not always the winner of the rally. 2nd Video Example - Ernie line violation - at 1:53 / 1:54 your last step with your right foot while in court is on the kitchen line. Play it in slow motion at .25 speed. The angle of the camera is not good for making this call but if I were reffing this and making a decision based on video, I'd call you on the line with your right toe at 1:53/1:54 3rd situation - bad line calls: at 2:54 in slow motion it looks like the shot is good but just barely. With the speed of the ball and the low angle I can easily see how this call is disputable so not a great video example for line calls. Better to show us a video where the shot is obviously 6" or 12" in the court and it's called out by the other team with a poor angle to make the call. There has to be a quick and decisive way to resolve these tight calls in Rec Ball and fortunately the rules are in place for it....the team on the side of the net where the in/out dilemma occurs makes the call with final say. You say, come on guys, it's Rec Ball, just play it over but did you do that with your called foot fault on the kitchen line Ernie shot at 1:54 or did you not give in?...in that Rec Ball scenario? 4th situation - taking your partner's shots - good example with video - silly behavior in Rec ball, who wants to play with you if you do that? 5th situation - hitting opponent with ball: I think this is an ok shot in Rec ball as long the player you are drilling is at the same level you are at. If you are a 4.0 and you do that to a 3.0, then you are an A-hole...same thing with a Nasty Nelson. Entertaining video, good for starting discussions about these situations.

    The tagging segment. I have mixed opinions. I normally apologize when I tag an opponent. There are unscrupulous players where they go for the face or just play recklessly. Those types of players I stay away. In terms of targeting a player, in recreational play, if I'm in an uneven match up, I try to keep the ball in play as often as I can without the extreme poaching. On the other end, if my opponent has a weaker partner, I don't target. The objective is not to humiliate. That's all. It doesn't take much for things to get out of control in pickleball.

    Great video, but let’s discuss #5. Don’t you need to practice targeting various parts of a person’s body (not the head) for league or tournament play. Now, I agree if there is a great disparity in skill it’s out of line to hit the opponent, but if skill is the same, and the game is not a warmup, then I’m thinking it’s ok. But, I’m an ex hockey player and I’ve been hit by 80mph slap shots so a plastic ball is nothing.

    I laughed hard on these. One time I was told specifically not to smash at an opponent. Of course maybe second point of match a meatball was served up and I pegged her in arm. Felt horrible. And amen to line calls in rec, if it’s close it’s literally always in. My biggest peeve is when ppl explain it hit out before the line. That’s impossible because it was in. Feel like most rec players have no idea when a serve is in at middle line. Nice video 👍

    I started playing park & rec PB (doubles) almost 5 mths. ago. My understanding is there are unwritten P&R etiquette rules with one being: If you are obviously the strongest person in your foursome, tone down the competitiveness and hit your opponent’s balls that they have a chance to return. Work on a new skill - perhaps it’s a great time for work on that third shot drop shot. No BANGING on weaker players. There is one guy that's younger (40's?) that "slams" on everyone; constant "tournament" mindset. We have a diverse group of men and women, approx. 98% are 50 yo and older (60, 70). We recently had a round robin within the group and I was playing doubles opposite of him. I was up front and crowding the center line while he was serving to my partner. He is a very consistent server. He did not like it because his serve goes down the center and then curves out/lots of spin. He intentionally served and hit me. Your advise.

    • @skidz8426
      @skidz8426 2 года назад

      don't stand on the center line, I'd try to hit you also, but you're blocking your partners view of the ball they have to hit the ball, just stand out of the way and walk in after your partner hits the ball. as for an unspoken rule: I think it depends on a lot of stuff. for example if a weaker player keeps hitting lobs I'm smashing everyone at them. I have a pretty killer soft block just over the net. If I'm playing with someone who cant move very well I wont use that shot.
      here's something to think about. As a stronger player in my Open play group I usually get paired with the weakest player, the other team will isolate me out. when I get the opportunity do I hit a winner or just a shot they will be able to hit back. so anyway it's just hard to say about the unspoken rule. I try to make it fun for everyone

But I did not feel bad about it, because the serve would have gone in (like 3 feet inside the center line) had they not been in that position. Different story if they're aiming at you with no intention of landing the serve. But without knowing if that was the case in your situation, I can see the other guy's side. Why should he have to change his (consistent, per your description) serve, because you've decided to be an (bleep) and stand where it usually goes?

    How about private league play when open play is scheduled? I live in NY where space is limited and most groups use the team reach app. It’s really blowing up here and space is limited so it can be really frustrating when a group is taking up a court and denying people into their rotation _for 3-4 hours right before sundown!_

    • @julabask
      @julabask Год назад

      In Boston most cities will have on the gate a recommended app to reserve for open play and they will for free keep and prioritize parks for open play. When it comes to private play most parks and recreation are going to ask you to pay for a permit of rany organized sports and don't want it being absorbed for hours by private teams. Parks are supposed to be used for quick rotation public open play.
      Most of the people who train for tournaments jump into open play and will just compete against other rec players but stay on the team with their partner. It's small teams of 2 people so pretty easy to do
      Or
      When we are 4.0+ players training though we have private gyms that we train at in Boston. Private gyms are way way cheaper then park permits.
      Also at 1pm most parks are dead so we practice with our own nets then too.
      Also many of the players I compete with own their own pickleball courts too and we invite each other over for practice and dinner.
      But parks should be left to the open play and rotate in. It is not appropriate for any team to reserve it for 3 to 4 hours for themselves.

    You ask, why make a call about stepping in the kitchen or stepping on the kitchen line while in Rec play, as if thsi is somehow trivial. I compeley disagree with this sentiment! The kitchen rules are arguably the most important rules. There's a reason why the kitchen rules are so strict (Can't have your forward momentem carry you in the kitchen on a volley and can't have anything fall into the kitchen, such as hat, glasses, paddle, etc.). The adavatgae of hitting anything within the vacinity of the kitchen is huge. The rule keeps people honest and awy from encroaching into the kitchen. So, yes, we should be calling all kitchen rules even during rec play.

    I thought answering cell phones was first in your list. 😂
    I think arguing where you start yelling and totally get on back-and-forth during rec play is annoying but that’s just me. At a certain point, you’re like, you know what I’m not gonna win anything in this rec play. I mean, it’s not a tournament, you’re not gonna get any gold.. I’m gonna let it go and do better the next play and “get them back” by winning the rally or score a point. Use your anger and frustration to fuel your game. Again, this is just me.

    There should NEVER be an argument about a call. The team on the side of the call makes the decision. It is ok to discuss / ask for the opinion of others and you may not agree with the decision,. After a few close calls are made, it becomes pretty obvious which players consistently favor their team.

    I constantly hit players with the ball but not on purpose! I always apologize as soon as it happens and they always tell me not to worry since it's a good shot. I have hit many speed ups at my friend's face, and at this point, he just thinks it is impressive because nearly every time I speed up at him, it is at his face. I swear I don't mean it!

    Targeting in rec play is bs!! Poaching is kinda bs but targeting the weak link and not letting the more skilled player get shots in is what causes poaching. I get if it’s a big point, but I can’t stand playing with a lower skilled partner when the opposition hits 90% of balls to them. On a hot day I ask “why am I even here?”. When I’m the weak link being targeted I actually enjoy it (more balls) but have seen some players get really down on themselves after an hour of getting worked over.

    And why do you have to play like you're the only court on a 1-mile radius?

    The most annoying thing is when a ball goes on another court and the person that picks it up has to find out who is serving before returning it, meanwhile 7 people are waiting for you to solve this puzzle. Really? Just give the ball back to the court quickly and move on.

    what are you talking about?! It is not about winning and loosing...give me a break. Please think why are we stepping in front of our partners and poaching the ball that was aimed at them...Most teams are aiming for the weaker player even at the rec level....that is the main reason. Next reason is the player closer to the net has better chance of putting the ball away...and if player is fast and skilled to step across he/she should try if opportunity is there. In rec play if someone is making the bad calls...just pick up your staff and leave...

    a couple of my petpeevs having too many balls to play with, where I play they have a bucket of balls behind the court and they grab a new ball almost every serve ahhhhh like you pick up the ball and they pull one out from their pocket "keep it" no I'm hitting you back this ball. you need 1 ball but more than that especially!!! especially when someone hits the ball into the net and it's right in front of them and they walk away from it. every time. ahhhhhh, back to the too many balls people will kick the ball to the back of the court expecting me to whip a new ball out. I hate that. I should make my own list. next when quite "playing" not they walk off the court. like if you say, if they return it down the middle I'll get it (forhand) and then they stop getting other shots down the middle, that are there shots. and this will be my last one, I'm a shot maker, a finisher the problem is I'm going to have a high error %. but here's the petpeev I'm praised for winners and reprimanded for non-winners. we need to stop making mistakes. O shoot good idea I should just hit the ball inbounds. ohh but when I'm on my game " good job keep hitting shots like that. not calling score. what about people who don't move up to the net. " if they smash the ball I'll have to move back anyway" seriously someone told me that.
    quick story when the dura fast 40's were breaking all the time I bought 200 onyx balls and people were like these are the official tournament balls, these are too those balls are just sponsoring the events you watch or play in. We'd break those dura every few games they were horrible. hardly break the onyx balls.

    Ball on court is a safety issue. Even though the player had an easy put away, it would have been bad if the ball had rolled under his feet and he fell with nobody warning him.

    • @CurtPrice
      @CurtPrice 2 года назад +1

      Yeah but common sense should come into play as well. If the ball is rolling along the base of the net, it's in zero danger of being stepped on, I say let it go. We had a ball come into our court the other day, behind us, it cut across the back corner and of course we hear "BALL!!" right before we hit a winning shot at the net. And of course, we had to replay the point and we lost the replay, and ended up losing the game 11-8, so it could have made a difference. I understand the safety issue, but if it's nowhere near the players or not in any danger of being stepped on, maybe let it go?
