I'm glad people are really enjoying this so far. 😄 Thanks for sharing the words and your point of view too Troy! At the time you made this video, the mod is in beta, so there are some things I most-likely overlooked. Animations (mainly the idle and specific model-clipping) and vehicle model tweaks (to make them fit just like how Nintendo did for the Standard vehicles) need to be done but we need more manpower for that to happen. So far I'm only able to update the textures that are wrong, as well as the characters sticking out their leg when drifting on a bike. Weird invisible menu models and the wrong menu idle pose need to be fixed by the people who helped me with the code. Still lots to do, but I'm certainly happy to see this mod is actually real, at long last. 🥳
@@cadewatson3041 There is "a way", but since it involves manually patching a Gecko code within the game itself without making the anti-cheat trigger (if it's still a thing in Retro Rewind), then yeah, that is a possibility. However, I don't recommend doing this since you can access it in online play as well, and you can crash the whole room if you select an illegal combo. This is a very big mod and there are thousands of files included, if we really want to include this mod in modpacks and distributions, then me and my team are required to change the way how models are loaded in the game. This part is getting rather technical and might be confusing or difficult to imagine (don't feel bad if you or anyone else doesn't understand this part): 1,528 in-match combo models + 4880 unrestricted in-match combo models need to be compressed to something like, one file to contain 42 characters (24 regular + ALL Mii variants and weight classes), one file for all 36 vehicles, and then probably a few more files for finetuning all the animations and whatnot. Currently, this mod really is pushing the real hardware to its limits. BUT! We have a base to work with! If the coders can make this compressed loading method work, then for sure we can actually see it getting implemented in more modpacks and distributions. 😄
Ok thanks, if I was ever to do it, it would just be to play on all the extra tracks along with all the extra combos with friends. I appreciate the lengthy reply explaining it all!
@@Wingcapman I really hope to see it get into something like Retro Rewind one day. It'd definitely breathe a lot more life into the game. Awesome work so far!
Bowser on stardard kart looks like he's straight from MK64. Toadette honeycoupe is def my favorite though, looks like a car youd get in a barbie/toy set.
I especially think it'd fit in Retro Rewind. There's already MKDS and 8DX tracks in the game, having any character on any Kart just feels like the proper thing to do.
If CTGP were to add this it wouldn't be in CTWW or time trials since it tries to be vanilla but with CTs mostly. Will probably be in Rewind since it already has shit like Ultra miniturbos and Mega clouds anyway and ZPL is more willing to just toss any compatible mod into the pack than Bean is.
Retro rewind needs this. mkds used to let all the characters use all the vehicles when you 100% when I was a kid I hoped this game would let me do the same, can’t say little me wasn’t sad when you couldn’t 😂.
I was just telling my friend yesterday that I wanted a mod like this and it’s here! They all look really funny and some look really cool, but I think my favorite is Waluigi on the Dolphin Dasher. I think that the animations should be changed up a bit to fit on the bikes a bit better but it’s still in beta so it’s not the biggest issue. I can’t wait to use this mod at some point! Something I think could be a nice touch, although would take lots of work and might be very hard to do is making the karts and bikes bigger or smaller depending on who you pick. It might make it a lot easier to see certain aspects and potentially balance out any hit box issues
In a way it is possible to tweak the vehicle models, but sadly the placement of all the tires and their distance are hardcoded; if you change - for example - the tires from the Offroader, then everyone's Offroader will be affected. I feel like this can be improved by writing extra code to make this work, just like how Nintendo did with the Standard vehicles. 😄 (There are special files dedicated to vehicle "parts" but to the day I posted this message, that modding part is still new territory.)
I'll tell you this, if they were to fix up the animations a little, particularly the idle ones-- that being, clean up the hand positions on some of the bikes, particularly for the heavyweights, eliminate some of the clipping by scaling up some of the karts for the quirkier models like Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Dry Bowser and the like, I could see this being something that finds its way into a lot of modpacks. Only thing I would change up is the UI, I would have the little arrows on either side be for scrolling through the different weight class vehicles, that way you only have to press the button twice at most to find the vehicle you want. It'd save a lot of time when changing combos in an online setting, and I just think it would be a whole lot better than manually scrolling through 36 vehicles. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to edit the menu UI to compensate for more or less buttons, I've been out of the modding scene for years at this point and it kinda left me behind, but the first thing I would tackle is the kart selection. Then I'd start cleaning up some of the models where possible, again, scaling the vehicles as needed for certain characters (though that would be monotonous, it would go a long way into making it presentable for a serious modpack). I feel like if they tackle those two flaws, this IS something that makes it into retro rewind or, if not, a pack *like* it.
It surely is something that will most-likely help out the modding community. Only time will tell once that will happen, the community is still going strong, so it's not an unrealistic thought :)
I remember being so surprised when I saw this in Mario Kart DS for the first time. (Yes, it is just something a vanilla unlockable feature in that game.)
This mod is insane. I just feel like the vehicles should be their respective size per weight class, and that’s the only issue I have. Also Funky Kong Baby Booster and Waluigi Dolphin Dasher were the goofiest ones.
Yeah, many people wanted to have a public release since they've been waiting for such a long time, that we decided to release a beta of it. Animations and vehicle model tweaks are on the todo-list, and hopefully we can gather more people within the community to help us out with those. Honestly though, I'm glad it is working to an extend, and hopefully we can optimize the mod to the point it's actually way less intense on the game's memory too. Hopefully we can at least fix those nasty bugs. 🙏
I'd love to see a sequel to this video where, instead of focusing on the goofy visuals of the combos, focus on stat combos we never get to see. We got a tiny taste with mentioning baby daisy flamerunner... but then you never played it. And later you picked yoshi magicruiser... but on a track with no offroad.
Mario on the Phantom looks nasty, and I mean that in the best way possible. His color scheme really brings out the exaggerated streamlined shape of the bike. I bet Daisy’s drift stat could make the Phantom a pretty good bike.
I really hope we see some form of this in other mod distributions. It would add so much more variety to the game. Maybe vehicle sizes could be tweaked somehow to get it to look more natural. I also completely agree with the character stat swapping idea. That's something I've absolutely been wanting to see for the longest time.
The mod looks really cool, and I think it'd be really fun to have as an option on CTGP. I'm a little torn on whether to remove character stats, because I like the idea of characters having different bonuses from each other, but the way it was implemented in Mario Kart Wii just makes a very small group of characters objectively the best options, which leads to online lobbies being all Funky Kong and Daisy, with the occasional Baby Daisy or Toadette if the track has a lot of offroad. I did have an idea that I think would be a possible compromise that'd keep/fix both of those elements: remove the character-specific speed bonuses. There's a lot of different ways you could do this; my favorite would be to give every character the same speed boost based on their weight class, so heavies would get +2, mids would get +4 and lights would get +6, with each character getting another bonus of at least +4 to something else, like offroad or mini-turbo. This method would stop the game from getting significantly slower, with most characters actually getting a boost to their speed, while minimizing the influence of what's obviously always going to be the most impactful stat in most racing games. If anyone likes that idea, has an alternative idea or has a well-thought-out reason for why character stats should stay the same, even if the mod in this video was implemented, I'd be interested in reading those thoughts.
*i love the fact that NOW baby daisy is the fastest character, since she has +8 speed while funky kong has just +4 dpees, but since the flame runner's high speed stats, baby daisy is unbeatable* btw, i would love to see this feature in mario kart wii CTGP revolution. it gives WAY more variation
I feel like this was a weakness of MKWii in that it forced certain character/vehicle combos, which is something 8/8DX fixed by just freeing the vehicles from the characters and just adjusting vehicle size depending on character weight class. So, it'd be really cool if this was integrated into something like Retro Rewind. Although I would like to see at some point Retro Rewind add characters and vehicles from the other games as a lover of Lemmy Koopa and the Yoshi bike~
Being able to borrow stats, even in the same weight class, would be awesome. It'd be sick to play Peach stealing Daisy or Yoshi's stats. Or Koopa taking Baby Daisy.
i wanna see a race where you go online with people but everyone has to use a character and cart from different weight classes and see what people think up
So it looks like the medium characters lean forward on the large bikes that the large characters lean back on (Wario Bike, Shooting/Twinkle Star, and Phantom), and the large characters lean back on the medium bikes that the medium characters lean forward on (Mach Bike, Sneakster/Rapide, and Dolphin Dasher).

Baby Daisy flame runner is finally relevant
I heard that Rosalina is really tall. Over 7ft and that could be the reason why she's heavy weight.
actually she’s tall because the mario kart devs asks the galaxy devs to make her tall so they could add a female heavyweight to mkwii
@@musicbymason"Yes, mario Galaxy team, Rosalina being a tall mommy, i- i mean tall woman is integral for the success os mario kart wii"
Waluigi is also heavyweight when he was medium in the first two games but no one ever talks about that.
She ain't heavy, but she's too tall to fit in/on small vehicles, so she can only ride on big heavy vehicles.
3:20 Wario looks like he is the cart 😭
Funky kong in the baby booster is so goofy 😂😂
Funky baby monkey is a great combo I agree xD
8:58 Rosalina was purposely made tall to be a heavy-weight in Mario Kart Wii. She's 221cm tall.
