About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.
Thanks for watching our video. This snow creates some challenges but nothing we cant handle 🤠👍 have a great day and keep checking in for updates!
We will, God bless you!!!
love watching your videos! Thank you! (we live in Minnesota, I will take the snow over the cold most of the time, I can remember a snowfall we had where the snow- not drifts mind you, came all the way up past my hips! I'm 5'4" tall! It was crazy- I was actually trying to get myself to work!) I have to watch the video on the behavior of sheep next! They are fun and scary at the same time! That big guy I can see he rules the...roost?? The flock?? Anyway, Thank you!!!
I take care of 3 horses, chickens, garden and landscaping on a 4 acre ranch near the southern border. But the snow here is just a few inches. But I was raised near St.Louis, so I know how it is.
Our challenge is heat in the summer, but thank heavens it's not humid! 💚
The music starting about 9:20 was great! Who was it?
Great video, thank you all, love the life you are living
I'm am, trying every day to live more live you are, so but
Will get there!!!! God bless you all
So glad I found you. 73. Always wanted to be off the grid.
I know this was two years ago but I loved watching it. I am 76 years old I do love this kind of life but this would have been a hard day.
I love watching you guys.
Yes. We are 78 and 65. Once upon a time we had 25 cows and 15 horses plus 2 children. Now we have a very good garden and 12 chickens. Just right for us.
I love the sounds that chickens make. Bless their hearts!
Thank you for this glimpse of reality when it comes to homesteading. No shortcuts. Great job.
The worst snow I can ever remember was as a junior in highschool. We had a 687 acre farm in Alpena, Michigan....raising primarily hogs, chickens, rabbits, and lots of hereford's. We had a week off from school due to snow storms that raged through dumping over 5 1/2 ft of snow. NO JOKE. The snow plows couldn't even get through it, they had to put blowers on forcing snow banks along the road almost 28 ft. high. We had to go out to do chores, after digging for hours through snow we couldn't even see the top of....just to feed the cows. It froze up our pipes from the well house next to the barn, leaving us to haul milk cans of water from the neighbors..and then, had a chimney fire from soot build up in the chimney from our wood furnace. So, then we had no heat a few days til that was repaired. There were 9 kids in our family. And you know, we didn't think much of it either....we just knew we didn't have to go to school!!! LOL! We were happy!
Linda Humphrey I'm a new subscriber and watching old videos and I saw your comment. I live in Alpena!! Well, actually 13 miles out in the Long Rapids area. What year was this? I'm guessing 1978 ish.
Omg... I remember this. I'm from Michigan, Tuscola county..
We had to dig out the snow literally to get out the front door of the house. The road commission guys were camping out at their shed the night that storm started moving in and stayed there 3 days.
Gotta love Michigan winters 🤣
Ha good times in an average snow fall,, for north central ALBERTA, CANADA. Your dog is getting a good work out
Old Norwegian saying," There is no bad weather --just the wrong clothes!" Here south of Buffalo this is a light snowfall!!! LOL... Stay warm!
Lili Pintea-Reed you all do get some snow if you are referring to Buffalo, NY. We are eastern NY in Saratoga County, currently getting up to 2 feet. Not done yet.
Love that saying!!! My better half is from Erie, PA...lots of "lake-effect" snow there. Here in SC we get flurries a couple times a year. April 1, 1972, Columbia saw about 2 feet. Everything in the state came to a screeching halt for over a week... except the mail. My Daddy worked at the Post Office! lol. We kids loved it, but poor Daddy was NOT a fan!

Matthew Vaughan if you want to see someone more local off grid, check out BossOfTheSwamp. He lives full-time in a cabin in NH and also has an off grid cabin in western NY. He’s currently making only about one or two videos per month due to health issues, but has tons of videos on his station that are a great view.
Although the conditions were tough, it looked so peaceful and loved the music. Felt so relaxing and soothing. Thanks for showing this.
Wow, Guys! Hard work but well worth it and thank goodness snow isn't year round! Gorgeous homestead.
I really loved listening to the music on this vlog, beautiful sound. 🎶
Love the aerial shots of the homestead, so pretty with all the snow. Great reminder of how difficult life could be for our grandparents. I'm from Calgary Alberta and we don't often get such large dumps of snow but one year we got about 3 feet of snow overnight and the city was at a stand still for a day while the trucks got out to clear the roads. City buses couldn't even make it down the roads. It was a snow day for everyone and it was great to see whole families outside shovelling, building forts and snowmen and sledding. Stay warm and safe.
Your homestead is beautiful even covered in snow. Lots of hard work you both are to be admired for. Happy to call you friends.
Love watching your old videos 😊
Correct. I am 69, disabled widow in Alaska. We have been hit with several earthquakes, 7.0 & 5’s, then it went -5. I had a couple of frozen pipes, had to recheck all the heat tapes & get them before too late. I was raised here, it’s home. Ordered bunch of seeds from Baker Creek. Have greens growing inside for Guinea Pigs. Got 5 more minutes of sun today. I remember in 85 snow was above roof of house. Had to dig a tunnel, taller than me, to the front door. I’ve seen it -65 in Fairbanks. Summers are 24/7 & grow huge gardens.
I wish you luck! I live in Fairbanks and all the darkness is hard on me and my family I hope you are taking care of yourself and that you get some help soon
Yikes!!!
I would have to move at all cost... I just could not deal with the darkness
You have my respect.
Doug you are living the life I wish I could live. You are truly blessed. Make sure you tell the wife how much she means to you. Stay safe and warm
I second that ^ Glad you guys are OK. We know big snow out here in NY, too. Stay toasty!
johnny30806 am sure he tells her.
Inspiring lifestyle, I am in the process of liquidating my life and moving to 10 acres in Oregon, off grid in the middle of nowhere. Your documentation of life on the farm is much appreciated.
Yay! Do it!! Beautiful path to be on for sure. Organic and natural... so good for body, mind, soul. Blasting prayers your way.
CryptoMystic the "nowhere" is somewhere.
Thank you for this special video of the animals and farm life. I live in a town with my parrot but miss the country so much.
I’ve seen more than 9 ft of snow in one drop many times in my life. Often see below 40* F. almost every winter. Live in southern Canada on the prairies. Still seeing the remanence of this years snow in the yard. -20*F is really enjoyed here when we have a spell of more than 2 weeks at 35-40*F. Enjoy your videos.
Off Grid, Love your videos! That's what keeps people young! My 75 or 80 year old relatives still could do it! Don't stop, or you can't do it! Many Blessings!
Athena Millay exactly.
75 is not that old I raise great pryenees puppies, quail, rabbits, chickens, ducks, bees, cows, not many just for myself.it makes me get out of the house also I still enjoy it.i have about video you have and enjoy, keep up the good work. Thanks
We got 9 inches Saturday 1/12/19. We are hauling 75 gallons of water every evening to our live stock. Even when it's hard, I wouldn't trade this life for anything. 💗
Oh yeah. Blizzard of 1978 in central Indiana, we had 18 inches of snow with 68mph wind. My dad tied a line from the house to the barn so we wouldn't get lost. We were farrowing eight sows the night it hit and the lights went out for three days, but we didn't loose a single piglet. Now that was hard work!
@@tanapittsford5067 That was a bad one! We sold our place and moved to Florida, our kids were glad for the Blizzard in MA. Florida was great for a few years but then it was off to Oregon and starting over.
I lived in Ohio then and it was 25* below with wicked winds.. We were snowed in for a week or longer.. You couldn't see out our front windows, because of the snow being so high..
@@19Photographer76 hubby and I also did that. Lived in Maine, went to Florida for ten years, came back to homestead in Maine,(again)15 years . Now, we're 75 and the snow is just more than we can deal with. Back to Florida. I guess it's not about the goal, it's about the journey.
God Bless you
I am here, and you are all the way over there... hugs
I’ve been secretly wishing for snow but not that much! Beautiful drone footage. My favorite part was the ducks coming out of the water to feed, getting back in the water then back out again, too cute!
I enjoyed the music in this one. I'm surprised the ducks and horses weren't afraid of the drone flying over head.
The most snow I can remember was the Blizzard of 78 that totally slammed eastern New England. I'm in Massachusetts; at the time I was 10. We got about 4 feet of snow starting Monday afternoon, before school got out. It was already snowing hard when I was let off the bus. That blizzard caused a tremendous amount of damage and many people died and many more injured. Cars around Boston got stuck on Rt 93 and could go no further. It snowed so bad the huge plows could not see the cars stuck on the road and were hit and crushed. Some people who got stuck in their cars tried to walk home or to some other shelter. Some made it, some died in the snow, too cold and too much work trudging through it. We got about 4 feet in my area, but the drifts on the back of the house were much higher! I remember we couldn't see anything out of our living room windows and Dad couldn't get the back door open there was so much snow blocking it. (we always used our back door because the end of the driveway was there) Dad did manage to get out the front door with effort. The snow was as high as our mailboxes. No joke either, by father took a picture of me sitting on the beam that our mailboxes were mounted on and the snow was right up there, no gap under the beam. It was as high as our 4 foot chain-link fence. The whole neighborhood was eerily quiet! Nothing moved, the snow was too high for the cars. My mother's car died in the snow and she walked home 3 miles in that storm. She got home around 7pm through the back door. She looked like a thin snow man and she was completely exhausted! I remember she took a hot bath to help warm herself back up. We lost the power for 3 days, school was out for a week. When I got back to school, I learned from other kids that their power was still out and some didn't get it for about 2 weeks. Now power in the house in February in Massachusetts is a very bad thing if you don't have a wood stove! We did not. The winds were crazy, esp on the coast. People's houses were either flooded by the waves, damaged by the wind and some were torn off their foundations. Some people died in their houses from cold, esp the elderly who had no one to help them. It really was pretty bad out there. When I was a kid, I didn't know the extent of the damage of the storm, I didn't watch the news in those days, nor did I listen to the radio. We had a good solid strong house that made it through just fine except for losing the power for 3 days. But that's not the fault of the house.
Then in the early 90s, 1992 I think, I was in my early 20s we got hit again, but I was living else where with room mates and we went sledding in the back yard. The friends of my room mates came over and we had a blast out there in the blizzard, but we all got cold and wet. We went back in. I could change my clothes, but the visitors couldn't. So they stripped down as far as they dared and we put their clothes in the dryer. I passed out a few blankets for them to wrap up in until their clothes were done. We ended up getting just under 3 feet of snow out of that storm. We didn't lose the power either.
If you Google the Blizzard of 78, you'll see how bad that storm affected the North East.
SpiritBear12 I loved reading this ♡
Thank you. I'm surprised it got 9 "likes" so far.
Loved your video! Hard work but oh so peaceful, free and satisfying! Our 2yr old daughter squealed as you went to each animal 🤣. Outside here is looking the same here. Great advice on keeping age in mind as we build our homestead- we are really trying to be mindful if this!
l'm thinking a winter chicken coop close to house. smell is at a minimum, then move away in warmer temps.
Hi Doug and Stacy, I just subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to watching your videos. I live in Chicago and my snowstorm memory was the storm of 1979. I was a little girl and it was my best friends birthday. I remember wanting to bake her a cake. My mom asked how I would get it to her as the snow was taller than me. My wonderful dad shoveled a path down the alley so I could bring it to her. It was like a snow maze, I couldn't see over the drifts on either side. I remember him telling me to go slow so I didn't drop the cake. He shoveled through the drifts three houses down. My Dad passed when I was just 18, over 30 years ago. Thank you for your video and question that brought back such a beautiful memory of my Dad. Stay warm and safe. Best, Francine
❤
I was in Chicago in the winter in the 70's at Arlention park a horse track we had to shovel snow off the roof of the grandstand to keep it from caving in what a winter it was
What a beautiful memory and how blessed are you to have had such a thoughtful and loving Dad. We are in the grips of a heatwave in Australia with several days at 41 C degs so I can't even imagine dealing with that amount of snow.
My grandparents had a farm in Cameron, Missouri. We would visit from California in the summer. As a child, I never thought about the harsh winters they endured. In their 80s they were pumping well water, cooking on a wood stove and used an outhouse. My grandma died at 83 and my grandpa died two weeks later at 87. I loved their farm.
It was when we lived in PA, we had almost 2 1/2 foot of snow on our farm the cows didn’t even want to come out of the barn. But the worst day was when I woke up in the middle of night, to a loud sound got up, didn’t see anything so I went back to bed. Woke up again freezing. Thought the alcohol drip had run out on our gas well. Soon as the sun came up I headed up the hill in the snow to fill it up and and 1/2 way up I found what had made the noise. There was a 3 foot hole in the ground where the gas line had frozen and blew. The gas people couldn’t get to us for 3 days called hubby he was in Nevada with a load on the truck and said well I’ve got heat🤦🏼♀️ if I could have reached thur that phone I wound have bonked him on the head🤣. Life of a truckers life. I worked the farm 2 years by myself.
Love watching you two - many blessings (and stay safe!!!)
I just came across your videos and subscribed. We live on Lookout Mt in NE Alabama. I am a Miami born and raised Florida girl. The first time I saw snow was when it snowed in Fla. We moved to the mountains in eastern KY in 1994. In 1995 we had -20 and -22 degree weather for 2 weeks with no electricity, icicles so big it took 2 people to pick one up. We put extra insulation in the farmhouse we remodeled so the kerosene back up heat kept us toasty. We live on 11 acres now with 2 ponds, a creek running through. We are not off grid but would like to be. We are 64 and 59 years old, health not the greatest but we love to garden, can. We raise rabbits, chickens, ducks, we have mini horses. We had snow 5 years ago this same week. We were stranded half way up the mountain for 4 1/2 hours. Vehicles turned every which way. We are expecting snow today, schools are closed, some businesses. I would love to see more than a few inches of snow here for a few days.
We had a snowstorm when I was a kid that covered every door and window on the first floor of our house. I had to ski out of the second story window, off the porch roof to get out of the house! It was one of the worst winters for snow. We always try to have equipment in the house that if we have to go out a window to shovel out a door, we are ready. Growing up in Maine you learn that snowshoes and a shovel is much more than decorative. 2 feet of snow at once in your area is a lot to deal with. Phew!
Lucky for us, my brother in law was on the snow removal team for our town. He came over with a bucket loader and made a great path out one of the doors. The snow was so deep that you could touch the power lines with ease from the snowbanks. That was so much work to remove the snow from rooftops of all buildings. Just trying to get out onto the road, you had to have a spotter because the height of the snowbanks made it impossible to see oncoming traffic. It was magically quiet too. Oh, that year, the mountains people skied on were open until May.
Now this winter has loads of ice underfoot along with snow which is wicked slick. Extra long boot picks are necessary. Courage, Barbara in Maine
same here in 78
wow where was this
@@jessicacanfield5408 central Maine
you are up there aren't you
I remember the snow being that deep! I also remember it dumping a ton of snow in April one year! The year we moved to SC, Maine had huge amount of snow. Our friend in Embden said it was up to the eves.
We live in WI - I bought a plastic kids sled and put a rope on it so I can drag water and feed when snow is deep. Works great! It really helps especially after big storms.
I am happily Looking foreword too all of your happy lasons
Living in the snow belt on the south shore of Lake Erie they measure snowfall in feet here. Most I have ever seen was probably the blizzards in '77 or '78. Snow drifts were ten to twelve feet in some areas with 60-80 mph winds. Being just out of high school it was a lark to us back then. Knee deep snow makes everything twice as hard then having everything frozen is like icing on the cake. Keep up the great videos and be safe.
Anigia Invhi We grew up in Cleveland. As kids, we often waited for more than an hour at the bus stop. Several busses passed us by and did not stop cause they could not fit us in -- packed. You'd freeze your buns off waiting for a bus to stop and take you home.
I loved this video I can't imagine waking up every day to the beauty and peacefulness that you guys have. I remember when I was younger I'm 56 and back when I was a kid and even a teenager we used to get a lot deeper snows that it was truly snows and not just size but I'm in Tennessee I've been in Tennessee pretty much my whole life except for about 4 or 5 years that I lived in Heber springs Arkansas but we are in Tennessee now and we just do not get the snows that we used to get we get a dusting of snow and it's gone by the next day or we just get ice so it's not as fun as I remember as child because I love the snow.
You need to get a sleigh. This will help with hauling water, feed , etc. I live in N.E. PA in the Pocono Mountains and we've had rain, rain, rain. It's been cold but not below 0 and no snow which is odd.
Great Idea! Maybe a sled would work too? Cheaper and easier to store, is my thought. And lighter in weight. There hasn't been much snow this year. I really miss it! God's peace 😊
This is normal for Northern Michigan.I'm a snow bunny and this is my favorite season. I'm crazy I know but moving snow is so much fun for me....❄💙❄
Janice Albig I'm a new subscriber and watching the old videos and saw your comment. I live in Northern Michigan....Alpena.
Welcome to the page...
Reminds me of living up the mountain in Washington state, north of Spokane. Watering was always a problem
Here in the SE PA, it's not unheard of to get 3 or 4 feet of snow and that occurs every couple years in waves. What kills us are the Ice Storms. The trees, streets (many accidents), & power lines all get coated with ice and it gets weighed down. Many trees & lines come down in those type of storms, but it's so pretty. Everything is crystallized.
I enjoyed this video. Hard work but I liked to see how the animals were handling it.
Impressive photography with the Drone footage and all the other techniques used
NW PA here. This winter hasn't been too bad here so far but last year, Lake Erie snowbelt got 5-6 feet dumped on us on Christmas. Things ground to a halt even for us who are used to it. Still, winters aren't as bad now as they were when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. My dad ran a snowplow and I have pictures of him standing on the piles of snow at the edges of the road where the plows had gone through and his head was up almost to the phone lines! Not even unusual back then!
@@nancygoerlich8526 yeah, lake effect snow areas are definitely more prone to much more. That's interesting that totals have declined over the years though...
Thanks for sharing! 😊
Hey Doug and Stacy, I know this was so much work for you guys, but it’s so beautiful, thanks for the drone footage. I love snow, but I guess because we never get it, I know if you get a lot it could get old really fast. I live on the Alabama/Tennessee state line and the most I can remember, I was like 8 years old and now I’m 61 so yep a very long time ago and then it was like maybe only 12 to 15 inches, but for me it was awesome. We have more like ice and not snow and it totally shuts us down here in the south, not being accustom to that, people can’t drive so it’s a dangerous combination, every one just stays home. LOL We only have had rain, rain and more rain, I would love to have one good snow a winter, I guess should go further north but have lived here all my life so just a bit too old now to move, especially with the animals. So grab you some warm tea and stay close to the fire and relax you both have worked very hard so days like these just rest your body. I really enjoy your videos thank you for all that you share with us to teach so much, we are never too old to learn, much blessings to you guys for the new year
I was thinking about the aging in place philosophy you guys are using and thinking you might need some help later on. That looks tough for a young fit person.
I live in NWFL and the most snow I remember us getting here was about 2 inches over night and early in the morning. December 23, 1989.
1971...Athens/Huntsville Alabama....my baby was 6 weeks old. I got a friend to watch her while hubby and I went sledding in the back yard! LOL.....We got , I think, about 5+ inches of snow ! We had a ball! Got pictures, too....
@@pattybowden506 I now live in NEFL and we got enough snow and ice in '89 to shut us down for 3 days! ....It didn't take much... LOL! ...Got pictures then ,too. My son was a year old....
Watching you guys is so awesome. Even with the two feet of snow I would much rather be dealing with that than being in the normal everyday rat race at a 8-5 job. I totally get what you guys are doing and it's great!! Keep the videos coming. People like me need the break from the 8-5 BS and see what real living is like. I am trying to get to that point.
Wow! We are in North Texas and no snow yet this year....today was in 30’s and 20’s by tonight. Coldest it’s been. By Friday..... 70ish. That’s what we say... if you dont like the weather just wait a couple days and it will be different. I remember in approximately 89/90 winter we had snow that was over the running boards or bottom of door. Ice is what we usually get and everything closes. We dont get it often enough to warrant purchasing the equipment to deal with it. But those cowboys in pickups just go their normal speeds (fast) and they end up in the ditch and that’s where they stay for several days. Most people dont go out unless they have to. I loved your video. We have acreage but are aging and we only have 4 chickens left. Raccoon of epic proportions got 4 last week. He is no longer with us! When these 4 chickens are gone that will probably be it for farm animals unfortunately. It’s like giving up. Younger people these days dont want to be in the so-called country, or Egypt, as the family calls it but we are really like 20 minutes outside a major city. Lol ! Know what I mean!
SuzZ Copher I have 4 chickens. Why give up?
A sled you could pull or have a horse pull to put your supplies on would help with this type of snow.
This is why I have always heeded your advice about Aging in Place. Since we are still planning our set up, i have to keep reminding my sister and myself that we need to remember we arent getting younger! Thank you for sharing the difficulty that bad weather can add on top of regular concerns.
Wow the snow is simply beautiful to look at hard as all get out to live in but beautiful nonetheless. Thank you for sharing your life with all of us.
Unfortunately, this amount of snow is all too common for us in Upstate NY! You make a good point about aging in place and dealing with the snow. Since we are in our early 20s, we're not thinking about that quite yet, but will have to consider it as we age and continue homesteading.
24”! That looks like Northern Michigan where I live! I didn’t think Missouri got that kind of snow. It sure does make chores harder, doesn’t it? Loving your videos.
Marsha Frick I'm a new subscriber. I live in Alpena.
Great drone shots. I’m impressed by all the extra effort you would have taken to film this!
Thanks !

Really just discovered you guys. Absolutely Love it! Keep on keepin on lol. Would love to be able to attend a conference. I lived through the 1979 blizzard in Chicago. It was ridiculous. Cars were abandoned in the street. My friends and I went in Possees to get supplies and shared food
Hello Doug and Stacy. Love your videos. I can't wait until we find our homestead. I find peace in watching all your videos for now. Thank you.
🙏
Gosh! I love you guys! Thank for sharing your life with us. Watching you guys provides emotional sustenance for many. I know it does for me.
It looks like you got a lot of snow. I grew up in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. On March 4 1966, (I was 9 yrs old at the time) we had a blizzard that crippled the city for 3 days. The winds blew 70 mph and drifts were up to peoples roof tops in places.Though it seemed like much more snow fell I think it was the strong winds and drifting that made it so bad. People could not get their doors of their homes open. I remember my father having to dig our way out of our house. And our fence in the backyard probably 6 foot or more was completely hidden. Google great blizzard of 1966 in Winnipeg, MB. Needless to say Im a southern girl and I live in Texas now since the 80’s. Traded in my winter boots for flip flops lol! 🕊Shalom!
My husband and I dream of a simple life on our own homestead! Working towards our goal in the next 5 years ♥️♥️ we love watching you both!
🙏
Love you two! I'm a single woman looking into tiny houses, but you two are so inspiring. Thank you so very much.
You two made it look easy! Thanks for putting the work into this episode. The aerial shots added to the winter paradise of your homestead. Really enjoyed it!
Thanks Leo!
Wow! That is a lot of snow! You guys are working hard. 💪👊
So beautiful! Living. I think this is the life God intended for us. Hard work, but definitely worth it! Makes me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder describing all their hard work. Im in NE KS & we got 6 in. No big deal, except living in an old mobile home, I have to be careful about sliding snow off the roof. This morning I went out & it was hanging over the edge about 10 in. I just came in & closed the door when WHOOSH! down it came! Glad it missed me. :) In Bend, OR in 1973 we had a snow that dumped 33 in. overnight. As a child I loved it, of course....Snow Day!! But my dad was out of town & my mom, my 2 brothers & I had to shovel the roof off. Love you guys & all you do to live the good life!
Hi TEAM, Sorry about the snowy surprise! Presume that the work made for an intense appetite! Hope that BREAKFAST warmed Y'ALL up for the winter wonder land! BLESSED BE!
You guys are truly such an inspiration. I'm not a homesteader YET but really wanting and trying to get there. With a family of 8 (6 kids) it's definitely something I've been wanting to do for few yrs now and watching your videos encourages me that much more. Thank you so much for inviting us into your lives. God bless you guys!
All the money you will save growing food and family 🤠👍
I know this was 3 years ago, but I SO enjoy watching your videos! You guys are inspiring to say the least. May God continue blessing you as you bless so many others!
We just plow our way to where we need to go. We live in northern Minnesota and we usually get a lot of snow but lately we haven't received a lot of snow. Sorry but I love the snow. Lol. All kinds of activities that go on up here in the winter time. It's a blast. Y'all might just have to take a trip up here to northern Minnesota and Wisconsin area and see and join in the outdoor fun.
Remember the Halloween blizzard of '91? Here in Duluth we got 37" of snow in one shot.
I was in Oklahoma right after I got out of the service, but my parents told me about that one. He was in the hospital over there at that time. We used to live in esko till I was 6 then we moved over in Beltrami co. Watching videos like this keeps me sane. I drive OTR and it is really horrible anymore out here. I think this is my last winter driving. I'm done come summer. To many close calls of head-on and see them with there faces in there cellphones. I'm ready to get back to simple living again.
DeWayne Whitney I grew up near International Falls, MN! Northern Minnesota is the most beautiful countryside!
I lived in the suburbs in 1978. It snowed for 2 days and became the famous blizzard of '78. I think we got around 4 feet. We got about 8 inches this weekend. I've been a homestead homie a long time and haven't won diddley !! LOL
I assume you're talking about Buffalo, NY...yep the wind took all the snow off the frozen lake Erie and dumped it on the city. I was a senior in high school and on that day my mother was held up at gunpoint in Amherst. It was hard getting to her with the roads being closed down. I remember all the dads in the neighborhood shoveling the street so the others could get to their homes as they came home from work. That was the greatest blizzard I've ever seen in my 59 years.
That is a lot of snow. Mean while here in Montana, we don't have hardly any...What?? We are praying for snow. It we don't get it, we will be in serious trouble this summer. I always love a big snow. I know it makes your chores more difficult, but there is just something about a big snow storm that brings out the nesting instinct in a person. Stay warm and be careful out there❤
Kristine Lewis will there be water shortage?
Been thinking of moving to Montana. Where are you?
@@danasmith1165 it is so funny that you asked this question now, a month later. We have so much snow. About 4 feet in our yard. On Monday morning, the temp was -35 F. That is pretty extreme for our area. We live in a small community just outside of Helena MT. The Helena valley will have flooding. No more worries about snow here. Water is usually not a problem in MT. I have lived here all of my life and I love it!! Where are you from Dana?
Kristine Lewis so glad you got your snow :)
I'm in Ohio, about an hour south of Cleveland. Have been researching different parts of MT and they say Billings area has more sun than the mountains (west).
I knew MT was more sparsely populated than we are here in OH but when I learned Billings was the largest city yet so small in population compared to cities here, I thought -- great !
So glad you replied. Everyone I know who visited MT loved it. I can't wait to go.
A few years ago here I remember when the wind chill was -45 but we don't get alot of snow, never anywhere close to 4 ft.
Do they do a good job plowing?
@@danasmith1165 Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I have never been to Ohio, so I don't know what it is like. Billings is very nice. More open landscape than the area I live in. Billings is the closest we have to a big city. I don't know if Billings gets more sun. I would say Billings is hotter in the summer than it is farther west. I love Helena for the multiple recreation opportunities we have within an hours drive from our home, including lakes and forested mountains. It is beautiful. We love to camp and go 4 wheeling. To address your question about plowing. I think they do a great job. You can send me a friend invite on FB. I have alot of pictures out there. Take care...hope this helps...
Hi Kristine, thanks for the reply. You have a common name (me too) so am unable to find you on FB.
If you tell me when you will be on you tube (your time), I can get on it then also and post my email address. (Then I can delete the email address). Would love to get your email.
Or perhaps you can tell how to pull you up on FB.
:)
I love learning from the two of you!!. And to see your farm life family so engaged in really... everyday.. in the winter.. and it's just beginning.. Thank you!!..
love your vids. 63 years old so I can't homestead, living vicariously through people like you on youtube. thank you for that. I do live on lake huron though and love it here. got a foot of snow the other day, single digit temperatures all last week, frequent power outages here in this historical town due to old infrastructure so I'm thankful I never lost power last week because the generator wouldn't start. I should think about getting a backup generator I guess. but I won't complain too much after watching you work out there in the snow. really enjoyed the music on this vid. I do have oil lamps for emergencies and survival equipment so I am there at some level but would love to be off grid, have wanted to be for many years. well done!
I'm in northern Indiana and remember the snow store of 1978. 3 ft in 1 night. You guys do a great job. Keep up the good work.
Hey lovely people, we usually don't have snow that even stays on the ground more than a day... In The Netherlands, that is. I remember a week when I was little (late seventies somewhere), that our mum took us shopping and we had to use some sleighs. No traffic possible in our neighbourhood. Also, some 7 years ago, we had some days with big snowstorms and some snow staid indeed for some days. Not too much, not as deep as you showed in this video!
Take care, and have fun preparing for coming winter ;)
I bless you
with love, Diana
We got only 5 inches in PA, the challenge isn't the snow so much as the icy roadways with dipping temps and wind chill at night. Be safe, stay warm! Love your Homesteading vlogs, I'm learning so much! God Bless. 🙏❤🙏 ~Michelle~
Love watching your videos! Homesteading off-grid is what our family is working towards.
I love watching videos like these. Seeing people successfully living without electricity and other modern conveniences is inspiring. I probably won’t ever go off grid myself but I do love learning how other people do it
Take care of yourselves, you two! That's a lot to trudge through, even without rams trying to take you out!
I'm old enough to remember the Blizzard of '78 up in Michigan. Don't remember just how much snow that left, but I remember Mom driving us into town to stay with family until Dad could get power back to the house.
Then there's also the '08 blizzard that left 22 inches or more across Ohio.
Congrats to all the NEW #HomesteadHomies of the Month!
@Rick Mitchell I remember that year, too! My Mom went into labor with my little brother during that storm here in West Michigan and my Dad had to shovel out the driveway to get her to the hospital 😜
@@CopperIslandHomestead I lived in Saginaw County back then. Moved to Owosso in the 80s. I imagine being in the western part of the State made that storm even worse with getting snow right off the lake.
It’s true - that lake effect makes the snow so wet and heavy over here!
Winter wonderland!! That looked brutal! But it was a beautiful production 🌸
It's 34° at 04:40 it's should get up to 50° today. I live in western Washington. About 10 miles from the ocean. The most snow I can remember is 10 inches in December of 2008. You have to remember the ocean puts a lot of heat out. So we really don't get that cold here. But we get over 100 inches of rain each year. The coldest I can remember is 10°+
Beautifully filmed video! What a treat to see the homestead life in the snow. The most snow here in North Central Florida was last January when we got half an inch! It was gone by noon, but my three year old had a ball!
But from this hard day, came the most beautiful video I have seen. There isn't a favorite part, because every part is beautiful and full of a new surprise. From the chickens, to the horses joining you in your walk, the sheep, then the cute lil ducks...It's just purely serene.
Driving through the snow belt in Ontario on our way to Southern Ontario from Northern Ontario. Had to stop every half an hour and chip off the 6 inches of ice over our headlights to keep driving. We had a few feet that day for sure. Going off grid in Northern Ontario this spring with our five young kids and one more coming during the harvest!
Friends of ours dairy farming in Ontario, had a line between the house and the cattle yard to hold onto during blizzards in order not to get lost.
@@wendyrowland7787 That's an excellent idea! Gonna pass that by my husband. Our plan is to raise meat cattle the first year and increase our soil fertility. We're gearing up to do market veggies as our main income, but with me expecting and responsible for 50% of the harvest, that just isn't happening this summer.
@@waxingsustainable We live in NE Ontario....came from Niagara where the storms are bad. I don't find N.E Ontario to be that bad for storms. We get them but winters aren't as bad anymore it seems. Hubby is born/raised in Timmins and says winter has changed. We live on 73 acres with bush/field all around with a few neighbours on the same or higher acreages. We have a bit of livestock still....we'd not need a rope to the barn, so don't worry about that.
Wow! You are super brave to do that while being pregnant!
@@mycountrygal60 thanks, it'll be an adventure for sure!
DOUG and Stacey when my husband was an underground Hard Rock Gold Miner we lived in Silverton CO way on top of a mountain and not close to anything . The school had a basement and two stories . From the top window was a shoot to slide the kids down in case the snow was too deep . My hubby worked three different shifts . When he was on the grave yard shift it snowed five feet and nine inches straight down no drifts . Yep I had so shovel it . I accused him of paying the boss off to work that shift so he didn't have to shovel it ,ha! The kids in town would build snow caves and put their own flags up. On the fourth of July it snowed . We wee there for a year and then went back to our 1898 Hotel we restored after closed for many years . It was our home . Basement and two stories with an indoor play ground . We were at ten thousand ft. we never had snow there like in Silverton . We lived in the old CO. hotel that was just our home for 36 yrs. Now in WA. state and I miss the snow . CO. has dry powder snow . I have been colder in WA. since it is wet . Well maybe hearing about this deep snow will make you feel better . Enjoyed the video . Blessings, Linda
Beautiful video. Loved watching your animals. The chicken coop is like living art and the chickens look so healthy. Take care and keep warm. 🔥❤️
Love the video. I moved with my family to Scotland in April 1974. The first actual snow I had seen was in the following December and was at least 24 inches. Was great. Couldn't cope now, am disabled and don't walk well in dry weather lol, but love seeing what you do, how you look after your animals, fabulous.
How is Scotland? You like?🤠👍
I love it. No snow this year though. Keep up the vids x
im here in mich so we always get snow, it looks like u have the perfect thing going on there, get u some quilts and hug up with a good book
2 years ago I moved to a homestead town in northeast California...population 500...everybody here have been living the homestead life for about 100 years...
I think you guys got all of our snow this year!! It’s common for us to get 12” at a time even a couple nights back to to back but 2’ at one time is a lot to have to remove!!! I will admit that I don’t think about old age when building our homestead...thanks for the video, stay warm!
Hey Doug&Stacy.
We got like 10 feet of snow this year here in Mulgrave&Derry Quebec.
Really like you're vids
Oh wow! Eye opener for sure. There is no way I could do something like this on my own and definitely not at my age. Thank you both so very much for posting. A real wake-up call and now i need to rethink my goals.
Beautiful!! Loved seeing everything covered in snow.
Hard work! But such beauty... Thank you for sharing.
Hi, it's warm here into the 90°+ range. I remember living in Wales and your video brought back memories. Now I live in Australia and it's rare to get frost where I live but, we get the opposite struggle with heat. Each has its charm but I cannot do cold weather these days. Keep warm and stay safe. Thanks from Australia 🐨🐨
I'm in the mountains of Maine and have had snow like that since Thanksgiving. First year I am living in my little homestead full time - love it here, but I am learning a lot about Winter I never knew before - and I'm originally from a cold country. Can't even get up my driveway without chains, lol. I had horses over the Summer and Fall, but so relieved they went back to their original owner when the snow came. Loved seeing your horses in the snow - just relieved it is not me THIS Winter. I need to build a little more character first :-) Bless!
Congrats
Beautiful variety of chickens. My daughter’s last live hen was lonely so she slept in a box by the door in the house. 👍🏼😍
In Saskatchewan Canada as of end of April 2022 we still have more snow then that .it a bad spring this year.
The horses watching the drone...
That was so cool. Like they were Posing for a Picture.
Love this video!! Praying for you guys!!
Hey y'all... first time seeing your videos..no..we don't get much snow down here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast...lol... keep those videos coming. I really enjoyed....
I tip my hat off to you guys.
I was getting cold just watching y’all.
I’m cold right now.
I enjoy watching my Homies, lol
🤠👍
My heart feels for those animals, I can't help it. Freezing little feet bless them!
