Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway star in this comedy about a young woman who moves to New York and ends up as the assistant to the tyrannical editor-in-chief of a major fashion magazine.

I was always Team Miranda and Emily. She had a chip on her shoulder from day one and made it clear that she didn't care about what they did for a living. The speech she got from Miranda about that later was perfection.
Agreed. Some of the things that are taken as Andy being bullied by Miranda/Emily/Runway are really more Andy not taking the steps someone should take to make the best possible impression upon entering a professional field. It gets a little murky because while Miranda and Emily are both harsh and highly demanding, the areas where Andy is lacking are very much on her and not them. There's a difference between saying "okay, this is my first job in this field and it's not ideal and I don't plan to stay here" and showing up blatantly dismissive of the place you're applying. It's the same deal later on when her chore of a boyfriend is whining about the hours she's working. That's not unique to her job; that's the nature of the field she's going into.

And since when are bosses supposed to be your friend/confidant/life coach? You're there to do a job, and do it well, or go home. Like Capt. Conrad Howard said in the movie Bad Boys, "You don't like your job? Quit!"
I know I’m late. But I show this scene and the interview scene to show what NOT to do in an interview. I teach English but I also go over life skills. Yes, Emily and Miranda are cold. But you do not go into an interview expecting to get the job just because you “are a hard worker”. She wasn't supposed to be interviewed by Miranda, she was supposed to be interviewed by Emily, shown in the fact that she asked for Emily at the start of the scene.
She had an interview to be a journalist with Human Resources of the parent publisher. She was sent down by them for a secondary interview because there were only two jobs available. The more explanatory scene was deleted as unnecessary from the final film
The older I get the more I relate to Emily. All Emily wanted was to do her job well and go to Paris. Then comes this inexperienced newbie she has to train and has no interest in doing her job well and takes Emily's dream away of going to Paris. If I were Emily I'd be pissed off too.
Emily lost her dream simply because she didn't care for her physical health. She got sick because her body's immune system got weakened due to her under eating. She has no one to blame but herself and deluding herself that Andrea took it away from her.
Technically speaking, the events in this whole movie wouldn't have happened if Miranda's facialist hadn't ruptured a disk. Because she wouldn't have interviewed Andrea because of Emily's "incompetence."
Actually it does fit in a way. Emily said Andrea was hopeless so based on her past record with the two previous assistants, it's plausible she would have interviewed Andrea.
This is the most amazing three minutes of the entire movie. Everything about it is a treat. Emily Blunt is wonderfully bitchy and arrogant (in her dress with shoulder wings like a Roman soldier), yet she crumbles and becomes uptight when Miranda shows up. Meryl Streep is the opposite, smooth and gentle in her voice while she cuts people to pieces. Stanley Tucci with his clipboard comment. Emily Blunt saying Anne Hathaway's character is nobody while blocking her from sight, then Anne's face pops barely into view. The staff going from casual mode to high alert. The whole movie is summed up in this one clip.
i would have never guess that was Emily Blunt, the fact she has red hair and her "bitchy" attitude in this movie made me think she was some random actress i never heard of

In the book, Andy didn't know she was going to be interviewed for Runway magazine. She was brought into Runway in the last minute and was told she'll meet Miranda's assistant which she has no knowledge about. I wish they did the same for the movie because it would totally justify why Andy has no preparation for the interview.
@@Miumiu0404 Maybe they hint at that when Emily Blunt's character says "Human Resources certainly has an odd sense of humor"? I haven't read the book though, so I'm not very sure.
@@Miumiu0404 if you have to explain what happened in the book to fill in illogical gaps in the movie, it is just sad writing. Her hair is a mess as well. She only gets the job because she’s spunk and she does make the best of it, until she foolishly throws it away at the end. But the writers failed this scene.
I respect Miranda's work ethic. She expects a job to be done how it is supposed to be, and when it is supposed to be. No one chatting on cell phones, or screwing around.
@@sashkad9246 I have friends who work for overseas companies, and they do expect 100% all the time. The management also expected to put in more time than employees
It's an interesting switch. The original novel this film is based on was much more scathing of "Miranda" (who is a stand-in character for Anna Wintour, and "Runway" is a stand-in fake magazine for "Vogue.") It blatantly states that Miranda was never caught dead doing anything that could remotely be considered work by the average person. However, Meryl Streep and the directors decided to soften on Miranda and gave her several moments of intelligence, quick memory recall, and a keen intuition that both protected her and helped keep the magazine at a very high standard.
'Are we doing a before and after piece that i don't know about?' Savage, cutting and sums up this film brilliantly. All the actors were arguably at the peak of their powers in this movie which makes it so great.
In this movie, Meryl and Emily get a lot of kudos (deservedly). But the movie wouldn't have worked without Anne Hathaway's performance for them to play off of. A less talented actress would've been totally overshadowed in this 'nice girl' role, especially with those two serving it every second they were on screen. But Anne held her own and made you root for her character without resorting to the cutesy-pie, edgy-as-cotton-candy, look at my dimples, nails on chalkboard perky typical for a lead actress in a chick-flick.
Anne Hathaway has that innocent, goodwill, look/quality. ( But those when they break loose it can get wild). Rachel Mcdams would've been a surprise. Seeing Actors/Actresses in roles that are opposite of their usual is amazing. it also shows their brilliantly work.
Yes she didn't do the proper research to walk into this job interview.... but she was still the realist individual to step into that office.. which I think Miranda actually realized when they met
. Miranda may have initially been put off by the lack of preparation, but she could also see the authenticity and honesty in the candidate. Sometimes, those qualities can be even more important than having all the right answers. It's possible that Miranda saw potential in this candidate and respected their genuine approach to the interview. In the end, being true to oneself can go a long way in making a lasting impression.
I listen to the original score for this scene, and honestly It fits perfectly with Andy’s perspective. Everybody else around her is in a panic, while she is calm, cool, and collected wondering what’s going on
Here’s my issue here - I get that Anne Hathaway is supposed to know nothing about fashion, but if she’s as smart as the movie wants us to think she is, how the hell does she not know who Miranda is? It’s job search 101 to do research on the company you’re applying to work for, and as Miranda’s personal assistant, it would be idiotic to show up without even knowing her name.
in the book she applied with the parent publisher. there were two jobs available and she had no clue where. she was sent down for a second interview - it was either runway or autoworld. at runway, emily was her contact, not miranda.
@@itney2756 Back in the eighties and nineties there were interviews with HR and many times they would directly send you to interview with the department on the same day. Outside of knowing the parent company, most people did not have the luxury of looking up the actual boss. This was done mostly at very large companies.
Ultimately, Miranda decided to give the candidate a chance and hired them based on their potential and genuine attitude. The candidate may have had a rocky start, but their authenticity and honesty won Miranda over in the end. This serves as a reminder that sometimes, being true to yourself and showing your true colors can make all the difference in landing a job. It goes to show that being prepared is important, but being genuine and authentic can also make a strong impact during interviews.
i can’t believe how good of an actress meryl is . she was in the clip maybe for 20-30 seconds but the expressions she did , the way she moved her every every part of her body from hands to hair was just remarkable, from the moment she appeared she was in control of the scene . She’s the queen of acting
@@monicavillarreal3902You’re not a Meryl Streep fan, are you? She has 3. Only 3 out of 21 nominations. It’s the running joke at almost every Oscar ceremony.
I completely agree! Meryl Streep is truly a master at her craft. Every gesture, expression, and movement she makes on screen is so incredibly nuanced and powerful. She truly is the queen of acting and always delivers a captivating performance.
I love how in one scene Emily gets her ego super high only to get taken down a peg. You could tell the direction the entire movie is gonna go based on that one quote from Miranda (I will interview her because you interviewed the last two girls & they were a disappointment, whatever the line was). Emily might think she is better than Andy but in the ways that actually count to Miranda, Emily is still not measuring up. Her ego is not justified. Interesting to see how in a way, Miranda takes Andy seriously without knowing her. At least enough to say I will interview her since Emily couldn’t get past her appearance. As elitist as Emily and Miranda could be, I will give Miranda a gold star on that account
. It highlights the importance of not judging someone based on superficial qualities and shows that Miranda values substance and potential over outward appearances. It also sets up an interesting dynamic between Emily and Andy, as Emily’s arrogance and entitlement are challenged by Andy’s hard work and determination. It will be interesting to see how their relationship develops throughout the movie and if Emily learns any valuable lessons from her interactions with Andy.
This movie made me realize and respect the hard work of the fashion and other big industries, BUT also realizing the reality of success in the fashion industry; betrayal, favoritism, trampling, and brutality.
this often happens in real life. high strung gogogo types burn everyone out and they wind up having to hire underqualified candidates because they are the only ones that will even try after a while. this actually can wreck companies. ive seen entire staff turn over in 2 years because of this.
eh... then they all sucked. high performers attract other high performances and even this type of boss will show more value to a high value subordinate.
Nah this sets up the premise that Emily isn't great at her job. Hence she and hired crap people. It's worked on later when Andy surpasses her. Emily was more interested in their appearance than their resume or personal attributes. Clothes can be changed but innovation less so
It's definitely a common issue in the workplace. When employees are constantly pushed to their limits and not given the support they need, they can become burned out and eventually leave. This high turnover can lead to decreased morale, productivity, and overall success of the company. It's important for employers to recognize the signs of burnout and take steps to create a positive and sustainable work environment for their employees.
Such a great, great movie. What a great, great clip. If this movie doesn't have you smiling at the end (well, really throughout) then you are soulless. :)
Wonder if the fashion industry is still the same after 17-18 years. I’m guessing it’s way more niche oriented and fashion mags even online don’t matter much these days. I know several very stylish women and none of them pay the slightest attention to Vogue even existing.

In the movie, we are supposed to feel empathy for Andy just because she’s the lead. She says in the interview that this positioning is better than some other opportunity she didn’t want. Her hair is a mess as well. She only gets the job because she’s spunk and she does make the best of it, until she foolishly throws it away at the end. But the writers failed this scene.
They cut the scene that showed the scene from the book.
@arvindhmani06 the book is so much better than the movie. Which is saying a lot since this is one of my favorite movies
Love her office interior
I respect Miranda's work ethic. She expects a job to be done how it is supposed to be, and when it is supposed to be. No one chatting on cell phones, or screwing around.
a good boss also knows it's unrealistic to expect everyone to be performing on 100% all the time.
@@sashkad9246 I have friends who work for overseas companies, and they do expect 100% all the time. The management also expected to put in more time than employees
She’s not a good leader by any stretch of the imagination.
I’m she’s a narcissist in disguise 😅
It's an interesting switch. The original novel this film is based on was much more scathing of "Miranda" (who is a stand-in character for Anna Wintour, and "Runway" is a stand-in fake magazine for "Vogue.") It blatantly states that Miranda was never caught dead doing anything that could remotely be considered work by the average person. However, Meryl Streep and the directors decided to soften on Miranda and gave her several moments of intelligence, quick memory recall, and a keen intuition that both protected her and helped keep the magazine at a very high standard.
"Who is that saaaaaaad little creature" LMAO
'Are we doing a before and after piece that i don't know about?' Savage, cutting and sums up this film brilliantly. All the actors were arguably at the peak of their powers in this movie which makes it so great.
"Are we doing a before and after" lmao
Stanley Tucci is a national treasure.
If only my KIDS will be just like those PEOPLE. When Miranda walks in. 🤣🤣
Nah. Rachel has a very confident look. I cant imagine Rachel ever looking sad or pathetic.
Agree
Anne Hathaway has that innocent, goodwill, look/quality. ( But those when they break loose it can get wild). Rachel Mcdams would've been a surprise. Seeing Actors/Actresses in roles that are opposite of their usual is amazing. it also shows their brilliantly work.
I love how this is so well written.
If Andi had that description of the leading lady of a chick flick; she could have been played by Reese Witherspoon.
She is so calm and cold I love it
"NO NO that wasn't a question "🤣
This part with the Dragon lady arriving is funny
I like to look attractive and have a fun style, but God, am I glad I work in IT.
Everybody else around her is in a panic, while she is calm, cool, and collected wondering what’s going on
I love that Emily and Miranda bumped into eachother and just continue with the scene
A first class production. Fun script. Even the poster is super clever, with the pitchfork shoe.
@@ColinYapp Working Girl is a good example of this.
It’s because not only is she smart, but she’s arrogant about it. She knows everything about ´smart’ except how to be smart at a fashion magazine.
Meryl, Stanley and Emily were amazing and made this movie. This is my favorite Meryl role.
i can’t believe how good of an actress meryl is . she was in the clip maybe for 20-30 seconds but the expressions she did , the way she moved her every every part of her body from hands to hair was just remarkable, from the moment she appeared she was in control of the scene . She’s the queen of acting
That's why she has a million Oscars.
@@monicavillarreal3902You’re not a Meryl Streep fan, are you? She has 3. Only 3 out of 21 nominations. It’s the running joke at almost every Oscar ceremony.
the way her glasses dropped from her finger after taking them off her face is a measure of how well rehearsed her twenty seconds of screen time were
I completely agree! Meryl Streep is truly a master at her craft. Every gesture, expression, and movement she makes on screen is so incredibly nuanced and powerful. She truly is the queen of acting and always delivers a captivating performance.
Meryl Streep is just stunning!
Stanley Tucci is awesome in that movie. Steals every scene he's in!
“That’s all”- fucking slayed. I god damn love Meryl Streep
I like how Emily runs with minimal arm swimming.
"That I can't even talk about!" 😄
There was a deleted scene of the movie that explains why Andy was so ill prepared for her interview with Runway Magazine.
I have watched this movie 12 times. It is hilarious.
The rapid edit version of these scenes is absolutely brilliant.
This whole cast was brilliant
Only Character of Blunt that I am impressed about
I love how in one scene Emily gets her ego super high only to get taken down a peg.
Ur justifying an abusive boss? Naw, this lady needs to be reported
This is an amazing break down of the movie! Mad respect! I’m looking at this film through new eyes now.
That little musical "That's all" is everything.
"before and after piece" Ker SLAM!
They really outdid themselves with these one liners !! 🤣🤣😂😆😝😝😝
THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!
Emily looks stunning on this one
One of my favorite movies!
Meryl Stanley Emily and Anne just perfection!
This film is a masterpiece
Great movie. I watch this over and over.
This movie is just iconic.
Great Emily! Great film
Meryl Streep 🥰
The whole runway organization is a cult of celebrity- Miranda is it's idol.
This was a great movie and still is
I'm not sure if there are any Steven Universe fans here but Miranda definitely reminds me of yellow diamond
Just Leo Yaaaaaaaaas
Okay
yes. absolutely.
My two favourite actors and characters in The Devil wears prada, are Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. Excellently played 👠👜
God, I love this movie!!
Emily Blunt was always on point in this film
all the acting is superb.
Emily was fanatically fabulouse.
Love this movie!!!!
That description should list Tucci. He was brilliant in this movie...
1:36 I'm surprised they didn't have Miranda scold her for bumping into her.
Okay but why is this unintentionally hilarious
That’s all! Lolol loved this movie🤣😂
0:40
That laugh kills me. 😂
"that's all" lmao.
Great use of the intro theme from Snatch, when everyone is rushing about when Miranda is arriving.
LOVE this movie.
This movie made me realize and respect the hard work of the fashion and other big industries, BUT also realizing the reality of success in the fashion industry; betrayal, favoritism, trampling, and brutality.
Emily blunt just won a sag award, came back to see one of my favorite roles she plays
The evil chuckles always gets me😅
this often happens in real life. high strung gogogo types burn everyone out and they wind up having to hire underqualified candidates because they are the only ones that will even try after a while. this actually can wreck companies. ive seen entire staff turn over in 2 years because of this.
eh... then they all sucked. high performers attract other high performances and even this type of boss will show more value to a high value subordinate.
I love this movie
This movie was perfectly cast.
Love this movie!
Yeah…. These are no longer the “gatekeepers”…. With social media and influencers…..
The fact that Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are now family 🥹
Love Meryl Streep in this movie 🍿
If you watch realllyyy closely, you can tell Miranda is intrigued about Anne and I think, deep down, has a feeling she can do it.
She's used to people fawning all over her. Here's a girl who will tell her no and offer other ideas
This was great 😂😂😂😂😂😂
