And here we go! We're finally starting this show, which we've heard is amazing from our friends a while ago, and already, we're getting pretty triggered by what's going on D: Interest turned into anger and irritation at how stupid people can be....which makes me wonder how we're gonna react to the following episodes o.o

“It’s just 5 episodes, it’ll be really easy” oh sweet summer child....
I've watched hundreds of horror movies and TV shows. The camera shot directly into the ruined reactor core is 100% the most terrifying thing I've ever seen on a screen.
My grandfather was liquidator. He was participant of the operation 90 seconds(this operation Will be shown in the fourth episode) My grandfather died 2001, he was 36.
That's horrible D: I'm really sorry ):
Wow, that is incredible.
Your grandfather and all his colleagues were brave, brave men.
@@kyuujinreacts why are you smiling? Idiot? Is it funny?
Ему было 36 когда он был ликвидатором? Написано так, что умер в 36 лет в 2001
@@dont_read_my_nickname умер в 36
The soundtrack is so haunting because it’s made up using sounds from actual nuclear reactors.
Yeah my sister thought it sounded similar in episode 2, but to hear it confirmed is pretty amazing D:
@@kyuujinreacts A recommended documentary from the mid 1990s " Igor - The Child of Chernobyl "
@@kyuujinreacts The industrial sounds used by the composer really help sell the reactor itself as a major character in the series. Terrifying. I believe I read that the sounds were recorded at another, decommissioned, power plant in Ukraine or Belarus: one imagines some of the samples were of old rusty doors squeaking open, etc.
The thing about Dyatlov being way too calm during the event comes from him living through another accident at his previous job, he was working with nuclear submarines' reactors. He already seen people being ill from radiation and himself survived allegedly almost lethal dose.
Partially, that's why he was shrugging off the evidence. Well, that, and being in shock and denial.
One must note that Dyatlov as shown in the series is very much fictionalised. It's true that he was a very tough, no-nonsense supervisor, and was known to have a go at the workers every now and then. But he also was very knowlegeable and competent at his job. It's a myth that he was shouting and bullying the operators during the test. Everything preceeding the AZ-5 button and the explosion was in a calm, professional, day-to-day atmosphere.
I watched this with my husband (who is a nuclear engineer). He immediately knew and told me what was happening before the story did and he even screamed when the firefighter picked up the graphite. It almost becomes a horror movie just from the sheer knowledge of what's happening at that moment. I will say, though, that this was a tragedy built on poor design, lies, untrained workers, lack of information and cost cutting in the worst places.
10:12 "I would never work in a palce like this"
That night Reactor 4 explodes, there were 3 more. The last one was shut down in 2000!
To be fair working in a nuclear power plan (even the RBMK reactor model like Chernobylt) is very safe.
Finally! People have been begging sooo many reactions channels to do this mini series and not that many have done it. THANK YOU! You won't be disappointed, just horrified. Lol.
Our friends insisted we watch it after they saw it first and they kept saying this was a pretty intense show! After the first episode, I totally believe them xD
The worst thing about Chernobyl is it turned nuclear power into this bogeyman, an undeserved reputation. In reality nuclear power plans are extremely safe.
And the best way to combat climate change replacing fossil fuel power plants, while we develop better bateries and means of transportation for other renewable energies (or even nuclear fusion).
The vomiting happens because the radiation does the most damage to cells which are dividing quickly, and the quickest dividing cells in an adult are in the GI tract.
Also, vomiting is a natural, automatic reaction to being poisoned in any way. The body just doesn't know that in this case, it won't help.
Ohhh amazing, thanks for this, I love this show. About the Calls in Russian that you hear in the beginning, I believe you do get a translation if you turn on subtitles.
Oooh!! Great!! We'll have to watch it again then ;D
"The level of radioactivity must be *through the roof!"*
Literally. If only they had a second roof.....
07:45 Till this accident the biggest problem was a melt down of a nuclear core. This was the first time that a core exploded. Hence part disbelief at having the core blown off at this stage. Later it was just cover up, of course.
OMG you'e doing Chernobyl! Imo the best peace of TV ever made. You learn so much from this, and in such a superb way. This series will rip your heart out."What is the cost of lies" So much of this could be applied to whats going on politically in the world right about now. I bawled my eyes out through most of this. :(
We were supposed to watch it a while back and never got around to it 😅 I'm so glad we're finally watching this (our friends had only great things to say about that show)
@@kyuujinreacts very very nice i love your reaction i am so happy okay watch more movies ❤❤👍👍
❤❤
I live 20 min of driving next to one on a island so if it explodes I’m doomed. but I’m not do worried the safety is way better now!
The old man in the glasses at the beginning is also in the Amazon Prime show "The Expanse" which is amazing and like Game of Thrones in space. It will have you on the edge of your seat and theorizing like Code Geass. Please add The Expanse for future consideration.
He is also staring in the upcoming epic "Foundation."
One thing you have to realize about this event, the reason everyone denies that the core exploded, according to their training and the "experts" above them in the system, and RBMK reactor could not explode. It was not physically possible. This, of course, was a lie. The Soviet Union viewed nuclear power as their future, and that's not a very bad outlook. BUT, they built outdated designs because they were cheap and this design in particular because they could produce plutonium for their weapons program and remove it quickly without having to shut down the reactor and undergo months of shutdown to open the core. They built them with shoddy material and poor construction methods, and Chernobyl #4 even more so in the piss poor construction category because it was being rushed to bring online by a set date to win bonuses for the bosses. Nuclear power was so important to the USSR that the reason the truth about the reactor design was kept secret from the workers is that it was labelled a state secret to prevent people from doubting the state.
Compare this to western reactors, they are extremely safe. They are designed so a runaway event like Chernobyl is impossible. They use water as the moderator and coolant, so if there is a loss of coolant event the reactor essentially shuts down because there is nothing to keep the reaction going
Chernobyl was not the only Soviet Nuclear Accident and not the worst
Soviet Nuclear Accident. Since 1950 the Soviet Union had 57 land based
Nuclear Accidents. The worst of which more than doubled the release of
Chernobyl. These, for the most part, were in desolate places and closed
cities in Siberia and Kazakhstan and not reported. One accident was in
Leningrad/ St. Petersburg! They also had releases of weaponized anthrax
among other things that wiped whole villages off the map. I strongly
recommend you watch a documentary called "The Russian Woodpecker" that
shows Chernobyl was not an accident but a deliberate sabotage by the
Soviets. I was in Western Europe and Downwind of this when it happened.
We couldn't eat or drink any dairy or eggs from the Economy. We drank a
lot of powdered milk and ate powdered eggs for months.
It might just be me, but reality and things like this are FAR more frightening that anything I've ever seen in a movie/tv. This is such a great series, hope you enjoy it
Such an amazingly done mini series.
Having researched deeper into this, having watched numerous interviews with Chernobyl plant workers, I have come to a conclusion: nothing in this was any fault of the operators, or Dyatlov, or Fomin, of Bryukhanov. They did not break any then-existing rules. The blame lies solely on the reactor designers who took shortcuts. The safety test proceeded in a calm, professional atmosphere. AZ-5 button was pressed, as part of the experiment, to shut the reactor down (it was going to be shut down that night for maintenance). When the button was pressed, that's when all the hell broke loose.
There are supposed to be subtitles @8:20 not sure why yours doesn't have it? I've seen that happen before but they also didn't see the subtitles that are supposed to be at the end of episode 5 explaining everything.
Not sure why we didn't get any either, but we'll look them up ;)
@@kyuujinreacts That was the actual call audio, btw!
A big thing to remember with Russia in the 80s, the State had complete control, and didn’t want anything that would show them as weak to the West.
One thing to note is that the show does exaggerate and change certain parts for dramatic effect, but overall it really does well in replicating or providing a good representation of history as documented both by soviet and world-wide sources. Especially when compared to the video footage that was taken during the initial years it is really dramatic how well certain events were recreated.
Well actually, it does quite the opposite. Not only when it comes to the lives of the characters but also the political reality is all made up. This show only put to shame, people who sacrificed they health and even lives to prevent a even mayor disaster.
@Uncle Ho Yes, not only that, but also, the scene where she visits him in the hospital and describes him what she sees outside the window, lying to him, in real life is a very sweet and romantic moment (despite her husband health situation).
"The radioactivity right now must be through the roof." Yes, in a manner of speaking, you might say.
Man I thought I wouldn't have to relieve this show.....But since it's your reaction i'm sort of glad lmao
Been waiting on this one.
Let's Goooo !!!!
Uh oh, you're starting this series? Get ready for feelings. Let me grab my tissue box
I honestly wasn't expecting to get this triggered by the first episode 😅 I got mad fast!!
The sound you hear is real recording 8:02 my dad was a liquidator
I have watched several others react to this as its become one of my favourite short shows to watch, but oh boy I am going to enjoy watching you guys react to this.
I hope you do n.n this was a very difficult show to watch, I remember getting so angry and emotional all the time D:
@@kyuujinreacts Yeah, it's one of those shows.
Gets you more emotional and worked up because you know it actually happened.
I remember doing research into the whole event and watching documentaries ect after seeing the show for the first time.
It's both interesting in how everything happen and saddening at the same time.
i really like when i read PT.1 on your videos :D
Yes, the recording is real, you can find it on youtube
Jesus, you actually almost bought into Dyatlov's complete denial of what happened. Also you should watch this show knowing it happened in Soviet Ukraine. Meaning no freedom of speech and any talk against the ideology will be met with shit consequences like not being able to work again. Also the KGB is in this world so that's a factor.
Yeah we know ): we kept it in mind during episode 2 (where it got even more obvious) but it's so easy to forget that was the reality of things for them there
standing in a field of graphite pieces everywhere around them
12:08 it was part of the core, a piece of graphite that supports the reaction going. Those pieces were intensely radioactive.
You say you're angry at the authorities. Did you know that Nikolai Fomin (the balding guy with the glasses) despite what he said was not really a nuclear engineer? He basically got his certification through a correspondence course. So when he confronts Sitnikov (the guy sent to the roof) saying "You're a nuclear engineer like me", the guy is bullshitting. Dyatlov was an ass, but at least he was qualified.
I couldn't react to this. I basically cried throughout the entire show. I haven't been this depressed for quite some time.
I know what you mean, I couldn't keep it together during episode 2 D: we'll see how the rest goes ):
Especially the story of Vasily and Lyudmilla Ignatenko...got me in the feels it did
This show isnt just good, its important. especially for younger people who probably dont know anything about chernobyl
7:48 sorry but that pun was too good
XD I didn't even realize!! Ahah
Yes, those recordings in the beginning are real
The Soviet Union was all about secrets and bureaucracy. Legasov was being watched that’s why he hid the tapes, and covered it by taking out the trash.
The series is an excellent guide to the hazards of the Soviet system.
Just 3 words for any Americans watching this…… Three Mile Island……. Don’t rush to judgement too hastily……
13:40 There were no 'Fire women' there. No offense.
Wouldn't have known 🤷
Make sure to have tissues handy. Cause......... you never know
After watching episode 2...yeah I'm gonna need them!
10:24 if you live in the US, you're within range of a nuclear plant. I think there's 3 or 4 per state minimum.
We live in Canada n.n I don't know if there is one nearby actually 🤔
@@kyuujinreacts We're better... but not too much. Basically, if shit goes down, head as far north as you can. Ice actually provides protection against fallout almost as well as concrete! Stay safe out there eh!
It's about f**ing time!!
I hope i'm the friend who conviced you to watch it!
XD 1 of 2 ;D
Yeah, you can tap yourself on the back for that ;)
OMG - what happened to the Guinea Pigs???
Were they killed in the initial blast?
Hope they didn't die from radiation : (
...or worse still, during the clean-up : o
(Great that you're doing Chernobyl ...but please don't forget Fleabag, huh?)
We're not n.n Fleabag comes out every Wednesday!
@@kyuujinreacts My apologies - I saw the guinea pigs were gone ... and I panicked!
all of the firefighters died and the guy who touched the rock like thing is called graphite and the radiation spread all the way to uk ireland and scotland and radiation is still out there chernobyl was the biggest mistake in russian history bcause they used cheap parts for their reactor bcause they stole the plans from the usa and now we have april 26 1986 and im sorry for the victims who died that day and after
We know a lot about Chernobyl.. 1st few minutes was there a conspiracy around Chernobyl 🤔🤭🤭
XD yeah, I should've specified ahah
Oh 😍😍😍thank u 😍😍
It is gonna be so easy..
Um..
Ok..
Horrible content but am amazing series. I remember when this happened, i think i was 8 or 9. So scary
These 2 really don't seem the be the sharpest in the box..........
hope u can watch the boys :(
We will!! :D it's been voted on Patreon to replace Fleabag n.n

After the explosion, Dyatlov and everybody else were hard at work minimising any possible dangers that could develop, tasks like draining oil and hydrogen, disabling the electrics, directing emergency water into the reactor, etc.
It wasn't a total myth, though . The testimonies from the deceased workers do shows him pressuring them to continue one when when it becomes clear that something was off. He also had a reputation of being combative (, something he demonstrated during his trial.
Oh the fact that this wasn't the first incident involving him doesn't help his situation too
Et Vikings les filles ????
Ça s'en vient cette semaine n.n on a dû reporter à cause d'un conflit d'horaire, mais nous allons nous concentrer sur vikings cette semaine ;)
@@kyuujinreacts haaa Thanks :)
16:18 denying the truth? hmm sounds familiar. honestly, this show couldn't feel more timely given what's been going on this (past four) year(s).
