      Hi Robbie, thanks for your comments.
      we struggled with the grass as it was very wet and never dried. this made it unusable. we had to remove all of the clay soil and add drainage.
      There is lots of greenery in the garden now. you can see how it has come along in some of the videos below.

    Just lovely . Only It might have been a good idea to have the corner of the flagstone area match with the curve of the board path . More harmonious . Perhaps time and plants spilling over will correct that slightly discordant harsh edge . Even so , it is beautiful , and a good job .

    I couldn't believe it when it ended, not even a pause to see the end result. Very disappointing. All that work, and the before garden was softer and more peaceful, the edges could have been rounded and some planting done, left the lawn, put a small oval patio in the foreground right corner with a feature tree. Didn't think what was done was worth it, over all.

      Hi KC, thanks for watching. We decided to reconfigure the garden due to the lack of sun and poor soil conditions. the patio was moved to make the most of the sun when it came into the garden. We then chose plants that liked shaded and damp conditions. From the videos below you can see how it has come along over time.

    I love the choice of pavers but I was wondering what was the point of putting up a fence where your neighbour already had one?

    • @IndependentBlogger
      @IndependentBlogger  4 года назад +1

      Hi. Glad you liked. The reason for the fence was so it looked finished. Before hand we had the board going across and also the neighbours could see through the gaps as their house is higher. The double skin prevents this and allows us to tack the climber to the fence.

  • @homesteadtotable2921

    Quick question, @Ian Fiddler! Did you use a stain on the concrete pavers there? That made the patio come alive much better than I thought it could! It's very attractive.
    I enjoy watching others do hard work (because that means I get a break from my own neverending farm chores, and that looming project of a whole acre converted from pasture to a crop producing garden), but as an avid smallholder/gardener and aspiring market gardener, I feel like too much space was dedicated to hardscaping. I could feed my family something out of that space every day of the year, if I had it in a crop rotation, with space to spare for a sitting area.
    I understand you're working off of a client's brief based on their wishes, and the average man or woman doesn't have time for gardening anymore, but I'm just itching to tear open that patio in front of the shed and putting in a neat row of raised beds, and adding an espaliered peach and a small lean-to greenhouse for seed starting against that shed wall. It was getting a decent amount of sun every day the sun was shining!

    • @IndependentBlogger
      @IndependentBlogger  4 года назад +1

      Hi there,
      thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated. there was no stain on the pavers. they are natural stone. they look great when the sun shines on them and all the colours come out.
      We have introduced some raised beds into the garden as this allows us to plant herbs. as you can see the garden does not get much sun, apart from the paved areas, where we wanted a seating area. The remainder of the garden is poor for drainage so we are limited to what we can grow. We did try to grow vegetables in the past but they grow very leggy as they try to reach for the sun.
      the plants we have introduced are suitable for a woodland environment and seem to have taken very well. Watch for the next video where I will show the garden 4 months on.

    As a landscaper I appreciate how amazing it looks. That's because I realize what you are doing from the angle and view. However, a ground view few times throughout the video would have been huge (it gives us elevation and perspective). Also, a
    narrative (closed caption) giving us a description of what the crew is doing at the time would have really cool. But I enjoyed it. Thanks for posting.

    Idk why people are saying it’s too much concrete and was better before...it’s a really cool water feature, a patio, AND a lot of dirt/grass area! In my opinion it made it look A LOT bigger and more “high quality/expensive/just nicer looking).

    This is definitely a Maximalist design; it’s like the owner couldn’t decide what on what to do with their back garden so they went with all the ideas. Would have looked ten times better with out that odd decking. I did like the paving and the raised flower beds, they should have done a smaller water feature hidden in the back with a path.

    Independent Blogger, This is an interesting treatment to what appears to be a very small back yard. I could be serious, but other commenters have done that job. My concern is: Are you planning to build a trampoline or other "landing structure" below the play set on the lower side of the double wooden fence, so when the kids bounce out of the "tree house", they'll have something safe to land on? It gave me cringes when I saw how close to the corner that thing was built. I trust you to figure out how to keep the kids on the UP-SIDE of the fence. :0)
    Anyway, I wanted to point out the wonderful "Chair Dance" by the guy at 9:35 minutes and again around 9:56. I've played it over and over and think it's one of the best photo ops I've ever seen. Also just following one of the dances, you have captured a terrific Moon shot for us viewers and his family to view.
    Because I enjoyed this video so much, (really), I've subscribed and rung the bell just to let you know I'm not normally negative and I know this must have taken a long time and a lot of work to complete. Watching my e-mailbox for more. Take care and check on moving that play structure away from the corner. :0) A new fan, Donna B.

      Wasn't the "tree house" next door? If so it's the parents responsibility to protect the children.

      Hi Samm,
      Thanks for watching. We made the changes to the garden as the before design was quite restrictive with regards to the sun. also the lawn area never dried and we were unable to use it.
      The below videos show how the garden had progresses over a 15 month period. I have also added a link to the original garden before we started any work at all. This was done to give the designer an indication of the pattern of the sun. You may like that one too.

    When i seen them start building the little bridge i assumed that it was going to take you over the stream to a little Gazebo type sitting area. Which in my honest opinion would be better than what they actually did it would add more room for people to sit out back.

      Hi Joshua,
      Thanks for watching the video. We added the boardwalk for a number of reasons really. We wanted to get across the stream without potentially falling in. This allows us to maintain the garden on the other side. The curve of the boardwalk was to add softness away from the edges of the stone. finally we wanted to have a path that lead to the seating area at the side of the pond and back of the stone building. we wanted a reason for people to walk there and enjoy the rest of the garden.
      You may be able to see a better view of how it looks in the videos below.
