I've heard of a scientific research where they compared the speed (number of syllales pronounced in a period of time) of languages. Spanish was one of the fastest, Chinese one of the slowest. Their conclusion was that there is a speed limit with which human brain can get a meaning out of a sound, so languages with fewer syllables per meaning are spoken slower.
