Great video! At over $400.00 for the fully fitted locomotive I find myself saying no way. The cost of locomotives today has outstripped inflationary costs by the magnitude of 5 times. A $30 locomotive in the 1980s, if released today, would cost about $80. I do understand the level of detail has increased but, to the point that picking one of these new locomotives up could damage them severely. You could never let a child play with these new iterations of what used to be a toy but now is an expensive collectable. Thank you for this forum you provide that lets an old man vent. lol
At some point onwards of the big retailers will have a sale, but this can take some time. I bought a brand new wartime black-livered Hornby Gresley A3 (Lemberg) for £120 over the weekend, but the tooling for this version of the A3 dates back to 2005. Still a gorgeous loco, though and in a livery I've always wanted. But I'm not so lucky all the time!
A model isn’t a toy. Wooden Thomas engines are toys . Scale models like Bachmann clearly state “ 14 and over “
I totally get where you are coming from here, indeed, I think we really have seen the bar shift both price, and quality wise in the past decade or so. In general, I dont have an issue with these prices, but that's me, and I can absolutely understand the hesitation for those who aren't happy with it. It's pure profiteering. You mention added detail but most of that is just an excuse: brake rodding is just a bit of plastic - and almost if not impossible to see on the real engines; then they provide pipes etc for diesel loco fronts which you can't add if you want a front coupling!

Hi, great review of an amazing loco, Bachmann have produced a robust and smooth very well detailed model, I have the euro freight model with the blue roof, I have fitted the motorised roof fan unit which I bought from Bachmann spares, it’s an easy fit as it comes with the screws and it plugs into the pcb 2 way connector, I chose a Legomanbiffo sound decoder which is very good, once fitted it brings all the light features and the fans to life, fortunately I got mine from Hatton’s for £147 plus postage, it runs very well and very smooth, I would recommend it as long as you get it for a price that suits you, thanks for sharing.

@@Proper_Chuffed Hi, the loco was £147 brand new dcc ready, I had a blank Loksound V5 Plux22 decoder that I took to a model railway show where DC kits (Charlie) did a re-blow of the sound file for the class 47 for £22.50, the fans were in a sold metal unit that cost me £30, the unit is a plug and play item, I prefer the Legomanbiffo sound compared to the factory Bachmann offering.
Nice review and lovely expensive loco . I travelled many a time behind Lady Di on the Glasgow- Edinburgh shuttle where she pulled mk3 push pulls . Bachmann are very good at charging top dollar . There are lots of 47s around I predict the price will come down later . Good video again !
Yes, there will be a price drop (we saw it when Accurascale priced their 37 at £169). Trouble is, the variant one wants may not be available by the time the price drop occurs...

Hi Hilton, I can help you out here with the 47/7 and fitting the details. It is a fact and somewhat of a relief, that none of the ScotRail 47/7 were fitted with snowploughs. Therefore the model coming with it already in place is not accurate to the prototype. Another thing I noticed and it was nice to see, is that the cab lights stay on when on the move. Lots of sound chip providers have this automatically switched off when the model starts to move, but there is no such thing in real life, the driver has to do it and they can forget! You will have to get a DBSO and ScotRail coaches now!

I think the unboxing process is a key part of acquiring a new loco. It demonstrates the joy of opening and seeing it for the first time, as well as sharing the packaging's features and the actual model variation you are reviewing, and the accessories supplied.
The Bachmann model is very expensive, and luckily for us over here in the UK, we can choose to hold off purchasing such models until one of the big retailers decides to have a sale event (as you pointed out). Trouble is, that can take a few years to happen, by which time one's favoured livery option may no longer be available: a case of "Pays you money, takes your chance", I guess!
One thing is for certain: Bachmann's 47 is a much more faithful interpretation of the prototype than that from Heljan.
Bachmann does have a very strong reputation when it comes to diesel locos. But as you say, it has to be careful that Accurascale (and to some extent Dapol) don't "eat their lunch", although it remains to be seem whether Accurascale's models stand the test of time...

PS: it has for some time been a point of debate as to whether it would be one of the 309 class 37s or one of the 512 class 47s that would be the last "Modernisation/1st generation" diesels to be "last man standing" in regular revenue earning service. My money is on it being a 37. But, as you know, I'm a little biased...!

They're a good and fairly accurate representation of the 47, far better than Heljan's recent effort. I have 2 of them but I wouldn't buy one for full retail price, cant justify it.

The original Brush Type 4 D1500 to 1520 were different to the rest of the class as having ETH and steam heating from new, the ETH ran off the main generator so these locos had an extra notch on the power handle allowing when extra traction power was needed cut out the ETH. They also had Westinghouse brakes while the rest of the 47s had Davies and Metcalfe brakes. They also had electric cooling fans as the others had Serk oil fans.

I was a Driver and the class 47 was the traction I learnt on my MP12 driving course. We spent 8 weeks on the 47 so I think I should know a little about them!!

Yes, the best locos BR had. And unfortunately the 60s could have been the replacement for the 47s but were not maintained of treated as they should have been. And as for the 66s absolute garbage.
Great video Hylt. When I was a kid that ScotRail livery was always my favourite. I remember being excited about going to Scotland on holiday and being able to see these. Also got to travel on the push pull between Waverley and Queen Street, which I really enjoyed.

Sorry, got to pull you up on one item. She's NEVER called Lady Spencer, (9:03), she's always called, Lady DIANA Spencer. lol. That aside, I've got this model and as she's the first NEW loco I have ever had (if you don't count my "Britannia" 63 years ago which was a Christmas present), all of my loco's have been purchased second hand. (poor pensioner!!!). I agree with you that it's getting expensive nowadays to buy new locos and if it had not been for Christmas gift money last year I probably would not have bought her but I am glad I did. I went for the SF model as I thought the SFX was a bit too expensive just for the addition of the turning fans. She's a great loco, the pride of my fleet and always first out onto the tracks. I've since bought a couple of other new loco's and I'm looking forward to the next lot of birthday/Christmas monies for my next purchase - probably an Accurascale. Great video by the way. Agreed on the SF versus SFX model discretion, I find the Sfx version just a bit too much to justify some spinning fans! 😂 I’m so glad you enjoy her though, she truly is a beautiful model and it seems the standard now given Heljan seem to have struggled with theirs. This loco is one of the best in my fleet and worth every penny. I would remove the snowplough and fit the detailing if I was you.

Good work again Hylton, you are excelling yourself! There's far more to you than initially meets the eye! :) The newly tooled Bachmann 47s and 37s are really excellent modes. I have......ummmmm.....most of them I think! They're brilliant runners, superbly detailed and yet robust to handle. They get my recommendation too. They could still do with an upgrade though, by fitting a built in stay-alive and better bass speakers, as Accurascale's models have. Regards Julian

Very informative and nice video yet again! Even non 00 believers like me enjoy your videos big time. But on this loco I need to disagree with the mentioned crisp paint job, look at yellow on nose and blue/white on side, far from crisp. And in this day and age that should be better. On a positive note, the layout is taking shape nicely! Enjoying the progress.

I’m going to go ahead straight away and say I think it is bang on the money, I recently bought one of these new tooled 47s from a railway show back at the beginning of April, admittedly the price I paid for mine was only £150 and it was the standard DC version, the one I picked up was 47375 Tinsley Traction Depot Quality Approved in the Railfreight distribution European livery, overall I love mine, in the short time I have had it it has become a favourite of mine already and hasn’t given me any grief, I have fitted the nameplates and depot plaques to the body sides on mine and I have fitted the detail parts to one end and on the bogies, on those I did have to do a bit of painting though because 47375 had lots of embellishments on it but some of the extra bogie parts don’t have those embellishments on them, it is sort of understandable with that though as the accessories will be pretty much the same for these 47s and some don’t have embellishments on them, as I say I’m very pleased with mine, I’m currently in the mind to add a sound decoder to it and hear what the pre fitted speakers that it has and I may look at getting some crew figures fitted to mine as well, for those reasons I think it is bang on the money, mine is an excellent example and will serve me for years to come, a good review here Proper Chuffed.

To add to the history section, thirty-three Class 47s were rebuilt with EMD prime movers between 1998 and 2004 then redesignated as Class 57. Bachmann also have a 57 in their back catalogue (and in several different liveries to boot). I recommend picking one up for a comparison with the original 47, and I intend to do that myself at some point.
As for the newer 47 models, they don't look too bad, but the price is very off-putting to me. I recently bought a couple of older second-hand models instead, namely 47209 'Herbert Austin' (in Railfreight triple grey) and the rare 47973 in Midland Counties maroon. I'm a bit partial to '80s liveries on the 47.

Why has it got miniature snow ploughs? I was an Edinburgh based driver in the '80s into the '90s. I don't recall the 47/7s ever having them in service, certainly not when they were Haymarket or Eastfield based.

Sounded like you said the locos ran at 75mph,they were 95mph, this one,as a,47/7, was a 100mph

There are two types of modellers. Those who are price driven and those that are detail driven.
Detail costs money. Because detail takes time. Separately applied detail does not climb onto the model by itself. Etched grills probably cost more than an entire body on an old Bachmann did.
The point is, this model stirs me. Because it is a replica. And I have no idea what decoder is in there, but that is very good sound. I can hear injector clatter and pushrod rumble. Detail is exquisite in the file. My mind thinks it might be an ESU. Or a Zimo.
High end sound decoders cost R2500 now. Which leaves you with R4500 for the loco. Which at these levels of detail is a bargain.
The problem is that Bachmann has always catered for the cheapskate. Now that they produce something worthwile, those will loose their collective minds.
Which irritates me no end. Its easy, there are cheap models on the market for this model……. go buy it. They are toys. Why complain about a replica’s price? You will never hear a high end modeller comparing his brass stuff to a R80 swopmeet loco with a coffee grinder motor.
But let this be clear, it’s chalk and cheese. I can spot a cheap loco from a mile away. This Bachmann looks anything but cheap. And it has that smooth, creamy movement that has always been absent from these. You cannot buy a Merc at Corolla money.
If you have Corolla money in your wallet, nobody cares. Keep it to yourself.
I think there's room for both types of moddleller in the hobby.
@@stephendavies6949 Indeed. And make no mistake, I do not think less of someone that can’t afford a 300 GBP loco. I’ve been there. But I despise those that shove their problems down my throat. I mean, what’s the use? Bachmann won’t change a thing. They will still sell out. But let me tell you what does happen. Guys like me that build these things custom, at 3 times the price Bachmann charges, are being ridiculed daily because we dare charge for our time. Sadly, as these things go, the cheapskates outnumber the connoisseurs by ten to one. And inevitably, we lose interest.
The result…… a whole country’s model railroad fraternity sitting with incorrect stock. And they are ok with it. Because it was dirt cheap.
@riekusvanderwesthuizen471 Ah OK, I understand your perspective. Sure, detail costs. It's a balance between the both, and each of us has to make a decision on where we stand on the subject. Personally, I have a foot in both camps, although I've never commissioned a custom-built locomotive.
I did have a close look at Ellis Clark's O Guage Black 5 at the weekend, and that looked pretty good to me! Do you have an opinion on it?
@@stephendavies6949 That is an absolute beaut!!! I model in double that scale but that loco and that company is what it is all about. Detail oozes passion. The Clark Black 5 smells of sheer passion. Its one of those I want to buy just to look at. And at 1000GBP it seems good value. Dynamic smoke would have been a nice to have....... but I think there is a mental barrier other side of 1000GBP.
