- How To Compress a Video File Without Losing Quality
Video files can be very large in size and it can take a long time to upload these large files to youtube or other social media sites. Compressing these files can make them smaller and faster to upload also is a better way to store your files because they are not as big and don't take up as much storage space. The trick is to compress these video files without losing any quality to the video itself and to do this we will be using VLC. It's a free program you can download.

You have played the same file @5:08. Look at the file names at the top. It should be "dash cam" vs "dash cam best".
Yes, sorry its a mistake, the videos at the end are the compressed ones, if you look at the beginning you will see the 2.5GB file playing, not much difference.

Once again another SUPER informative and useful video. Keep uploading more videos like this please!

Great video, man. I didn't know that VLC was able to convert videos. Keep up the good work, Brian :)
Thanks
Me too didn't know.
Thanks for video man good job salute
VLC has recently updated the software and I've no zero issues. It did an amazing job compressing my video and I like that I have the option to keep the quality of the audio the same during the conversion. I'm very pleased with the results. Thanks for the great video.
Have seen similar tutorials on the above subject matter but yours stood out for me because am able to understand and follow every step as instructed and it works. Now my days of compression stalemate are finally over. Thank you ☺️
So so so so helpful! I've had VLC downloaded for years. I've had the solution the whole time. Thanks for making this video buddy!
Ain't working for me, it's giving me an audio file with no video ! :(
Thank you! You have saved us no end of hassle as we have been trying to upload our services (no in-person services owing to Covid-19). May God bless and reward you richly.
This is awesome and really must try this one. Never knew VLC can do this. Thank you so much for this very helpful video.
oh that new thank you for video Britec09 and keep going for more :-)
You're welcome.
hello sir, output firle is of ".ps" format and size is more than the original..
No Audio On Playback, H.E.L.P.
thank you! you just saved me time (maybe hours) and risks on searching free software just to resize a video. I never knew vlc could do this..
Always check my channel first, over 1500 quality videos for free :)
Thank you so much Britech. It really saved my life. This is Epic. Loved it how VLC compressed my file video file size from 7MB to 1 MB without even messing up with the quality of the video.
Did anybody notice when he was doing the comparison if you look at the top they are the same file, deskcambest.mp4
This not only got rid of the audio, but also made the file 100 mb bigger?
My Audio remained, but it made my video file bigger too! Source file was mp4 and I simply wanted to compress it.
@@CreativeBlue If your file is already compressed, compressing it again won't help much.
Check the bitrate of your original file. If the compressed file has a higher bitrate, there's no point compressing it since it'll just fill in blanks with duplicate data to reach the correct bitrate.
A very useful tutorial. Thank you for making this, it's really helped me a lot!
Thanks! That was as straight forward as you can get, even I understood. ;-)
Thanks Bryan, looks pretty good! What would you say is the best qual/size converter out there for HD action sports footage?
Great thanks for this Tip buddy, I just uploaded my First Motovlogging video footage to YT and it was 2Gig. It took about 13 hours for me to render in Premiere Pro, and took 9 hours to upload, that was a serious hard work I should say, but thanks to your video, now I could at least reduce the uploading time.
yo did u find any solution to upload quick ?
Thank you mate. You make me realize that my favorite VLC will do a magic on recorded video. Cheers Mate.
Beautiful, more people need to know this about VLC!
awesome, gonna do that from now on
keep compressing until there's nothing left!
Than keep going and it will add space to your computer.

I am able to compress my video using this method. Thank you lot for this info!!
Hi Singh. Other people here have said that they lost the sound from their
video once converted. Did you have this problem come up at some point?
Thanks!
I am currently converting, will let you know once i have done it mate
Oh my god, i was trying to do with a online program that fails above 500 mb, and that was a problem, but now, thanks again to the awesome VLC i discover something great, very very usefull, i always want to send to my collegues small gameplays throught wasap, and this is the nice way! i love you, i dont know why not many people tell us about this very nice trick! This is the best tutorial of this one out here in RUclips. I subbed. Thanks!
Thank you for this video! I have had trouble with huge video files since I bought myself a camera
THANK YOU! I was uploading 14gigs onto RUclips and it would take all night lol Now I can upload in 30 minutes or less with no visible loss in quality.
Very helpful.. going to try this for my next 11hour ASMR video. I already wasted a full day uploading my clothes dryer sound vid yesterday. Glad I found you!
11 hour ASMR video what
Amazing Tutorial!
Helped me a lot. Thanks
Awesome stuff, saved me loads of time to not have to re-record my video, thanks so much for the help!!!
Really useful "how to" video. Got the video file size down to about 5% of original (did not need HQ). Thanks again Britec09 !
Glad I could help.
Thank you! From 2 GB to around 300 MB. Works pretty good
Thanks, it worked well, Keep uploading more videos like this please!
VLC is not working with the source file I have (MP4 created with Windows movie maker).
Hmm not sure why.
Thank you Britech as I found this video very helpful and thank you guys for sharing tips for video settings in comments
Thanks man. You are of great help. I was in a real dilemma. Great video.
Thanks
I knew there's a reason why I love VLC more than any other player. :)
Thank you, this was really helpful. A simple enough method that gets results.
Easy to follow too.
Great vid man 👍
Will this work with 60fps vids?
it dropped 9.80MB (unable for normal discord users) to 2.28MB
amazing discovery
beyond science but works for me
Yeah would like to see more about vlc settings you mentioned.
More on the way
WTF!! Using VLC for years now and never knew i could do this with VLC. Thanks man :D
You're welcome, learn something new everyday.
Indeed.. Never too old to learn new stuff.. 😉
Thank you mate! I learn something new about VLC every time, such an outstanding tool!
Yeah its a awesome program
thank u i didn't know that VLC was able to convert videos. great video ❤
Hello Brian.
As a bit of an amateur, I wold have liked to know what the conversion actually did.
Eg what did it change?
The bit rate
The frame rate
The codec
The resolution?
Something else?
Dude the difference between the videos is that right is brighter than the left. Everyone can see that. Wish it was just on same line as the original. Either way nice video!
this video is literally perfect. thankyou so much!!
Welp. I thought this wasn't going to help me out. But I was totally wrong. You just made my life easier. Subscribed
My converted file has no sound. How to keep the original sound?
Nice one Brian... more videos on this subject would be great buddy...

Thanks friend, was very helpful :)
You're welcome

Hi Britec09
So, I started my conversion of a 25Gb game vid about half an hour ago, and I'm at about 25% now.
It is very important that the video quality remains HD.
However, I see with great concern that a LOT of your viewers complain that the sound goes missing or the video file increases! Yet, you have not replied to any of them or made any additional videos to address this.
If I just put my trust in you and wasted 2 hours by doing something that you recommended and the audio is missing, I'm gonna be seriously pissed off!
Please address issues that your viewers have with your procedures so that we at least know what contingencies to follow.
I've been sitting here for about an hour or two and have compressed the same 10GB video twice. The first time the audio went missing and the quality was reduced. The second time the audio went missing and there were a million bugs in the video itself. Now I'm about to go and delete that software and begin searching for another program. lol
vlc is the only one working. I still dont really understand how TF it works but you wont probbably find a better solution
I also lost sound when doing it this way. Has anyone else found a solution?
@Mi Casa
I found that I could significantly decrease the size and still maintain fairly good quality by just playing around with the export settings in Videopad Video Editor. There are numerous places you can find license keys for the full version. ;)
Hey, did you manage to find a solution to the audio dilemma seeing as Britec09 is not responding
Thank you very much for this video. You solved a major problem for me.
Thank you so much I didn't remember VLC I create Music to he people sleep or just to relax and sometimes the video is long that's a lot GBs thank you again
I downloaded VLC. I followed your instructions. One crash later, I found that it had started to overwrite the file, then crashed, leaving me with a 26 second jumble and no original. 1.2 GB, vanished. Thanks. Now I remember why I stopped using VLC years ago.
tried this several times following instructions. Audio disappeared and when I selected MPEG 4 AAC audio I got this message. Help?
Streaming / Transcoding failed: VLC could not open the mp4a audio encoder.
Appreciate that video I have only just started playing around with video. I was using Openshot which left me with created files at around 32mb after following your video I was able to kep quality and end up with a file of 4.2mb Great!
Very nice and informative video. Helped out a bunch. Thanks! :D
Thank you for making this video, it really helpful
It did not work, the VLCPlayer went black when I clicked "convert and save"
yes this is meant to happen, just click the play button and the conversion will start, the sceen being black
What do i do if VCL doesn't start converting it automatically? Because when it does that it only saves me the video a second time in the same size
At the very end, when you were showing comparison, you played two the same clips ".... Best"
... Coincidence or mistake ?
your right lol it's a mistake, there is not much different a small degrade in quality.
The image on the videos is the compressed one, look at the beginning and you will see the large file playing, not much difference
He showed the same image to give everyone the impression there's no loss in video quality, i tried it, trust me, there's a big difference in quality
Great vid. Have you done overview of VLC features that some people may not be aware of?
Not sure I will take a look.
I did exactly what you said and my conversion actually got bigger.
what is the quality like on a 50" tv though Bri?
Well if its 1080p to start off I don't think it will be too bad, I used 720p because of quickness
Thanks, didn't know VLC could do that. Subscribed :)
Thank you Britec. I have been using VSDC Video Editor since RUclips decided in their infiinite wisdom to stop doing their RUclips Video Editor. I'm getting by with it but I've noticed my hard drive space is starting to get less after coversion plus when I'm uploading videos to RUclips I get a message at the side saying something about Your videos will process faster if you encode into a streamable file format and it takes absolutely forever to upload.
Thanks
Can you convert more than one file at a time? I have been ripping my DVD TV series to MP4 files and each 24 min episode is like 450 mb's. When I convert they come out at 181 mb's and look to be the same quality. So want to convert them all. This will save me mega space. Is this much reduction for standard def normal? thanks for any tips. Used WINX DVD ripper to rip my DVD and the files came out huge.
thank you so much bro, you saved me a lot of uploading time ❤️❤️🙂🙂
So helpful, thank you man!
If the video I am compressing is 60fps, will the frame rate be maintained when compressed? Awesome video!
Thank you very much for this video! Really helps me a lot!
very welldone bro very welldone it's working
m really happy with u now m your subscriber
Why when you make a 4k video size will be big but when download it from youtube the size will be much smaller than the orginal one
Alright Brian that's impressive! Didn't know vlc has that compression option. How match able would you rate in % between these two videos because quality is a very serious business for me thanks
Yeah I know, I was uploading this to another social media site with has restrictions, I don't use this method for RUclips on my channel.
if you're converting something with a subtitle how do you keep the subtitle? I finished converting but the subtitle is gone
Thanks for another video Brian. More "how to" videos please!
Will do
Thanks so much, I did as you said but somehow lost the volume? can u advise?
Thanks, @Britec09 this worked like a boss!
thanks, simple but very effective or rather explained very well that made something people struggle with look simple ad yet be very effective. also too often forget about vlc
This would be the same for master music recordings say a HQ .wav file? Would this program also be good for that or is there a different way music files are stored ? Would compression be bad for such files?
You are my hero of the week well done.. Many thanks
I converted a 29 mb video clip and after conversion it has become larger to 35 mb following the same steps, is there a setting that I missed?
was wondering how to compress videos, thanks mate!
Really help me a lot, thanks mate!
has an audio problem.. (no audio at all)
i played it on VLC it has audio.
i played it on other players (no audio)
cant belive XD its so easy and i use vlc that long and didnt notice that great option! thanks alot
I'm thinking this is a results may vary thing. I'm using this method of compression to cut down on the massive file sizes Windows 10 creates when using its Game DVR and my results have been as follows:
File size reduction: pretty good; 1.5GB goes down to around 125MB.
Video quality: Unnoticeable difference. I'm sure there is a slight degradation in the compressed version, but it definitely isn't that big from what I'm seeing.
Audio: In some instances, I'm not sure why, I lost the audio like others have. However, after clicking Save/Convert in VLC Player, clicking the "Edit Selected Profile" button in the Settings section of the window that comes up, going to the "Audio Codec" tab, and checking off "Keep original audio track" this would successfully convert with audio every single time.
Audio Quality: Also an unnoticeable difference.
This kind of leads me to believe that length and file type of your source video may impact how well this works. For an MP4 around 30 minutes, this works perfectly for me so far.
fantastic , can i convert without merging it the same MB with another format
Thanks so much! ,,,MP4 went from 377mb to 107mb. I have VLC player I had
no idea it can compress files!!!!
Worked great but it rotated my image 45 degrees lol. WTH? I'm compressing a motion graphic video file. Any ideas? Quality is perfect and size is perfect.
Hi what about doing the same on a Mac? How can I decide what size to go back to? I have a huge video file here that is 43 GB and I want to downsize it to under 2GB so I can send it via WeTransfer. Thnx for your help!
thank you i love this greatly help me reduce uploading time but also reduce the space it consume on my HDD specially may portable HD
Thank You Man. it's Help me Alot.
