I (@19 years of age) was privileged to be a member of the chorus in this production. La Toczyska was magnificent as Amneris, possessing a grand stage manner and a powerful yet beautiful voice. And I fondly remember her as being kind and gracious to everyone including me. Not only was she a great artist, she is also a fine human being. God bless her!
Toczyska sings like my teacher has been trying to get me to do for years now.😂 I’m getting there slowly but surely. Thanks so much for posting this. It’s a great guide and a reminder in a time of no chest voice of how important it really is. We can even see Freni fighting the good fight keeping the chest voice in there which is what allowed her to successfully sing Aida. Brava to both great singers and technicians.
I would love to hear more of your impressions of her voice if you can? The qualities, size etc? The presence of her sound in the theatre compared to other singers. If you can recall.
She usually chose her roles correctly but Aida is not a wise choice and neither was her doing Puccini roles, either. At least, she didn't become a FULL ON Renata Scotto (vipera) and do Lady Macbeth, Giorgetta, etc.
Podobają mi się trzy Amneris to : Oralia Dominguez, Stefania Toczyska, Małgorzata Walewska. Każda inna, ale każda z doskonałą techniką i takie wyraziste.
@@stefaniatoczyskamusic, Thank you. The combination of the jealous, vindictive Amneris and the terrified Aida makes for one of the most exciting scenes in opera.
@@sanfordpress8943 I don’t deny Freni’s artistry or career. And believe me I understand music, opera and voice possibility very well. But Aida, Don Carlo, Tosca, were not for her voice. She was a lyric soprano - no spinto and no dramatic . Unfortunately, von Karajan convinced her and Ricciarelli to sing the heaviest parts . Just imagine Ricciarelli singing Turandot ! I don’t doubt Freni’s talent but Aida is above her possibilities.
@mickyalexandru6894 heavier roles ruined Scotto and Ricciarelli but not Freni. Historically, yes,it's a heavier role and we may not prefer a Freni in it,so I guess it just comes down to personal preference .
@@sanfordpress8943 Always there is the personal preferences. I prefer a spinto or dramatic voice for the dramatic parts. Scotto was very deeply involved in her roles. But jumping over the fence was a big mistake. She harmed her voice with her own hands.
@mickyalexandru6894 I heard Scotto sing Butterfly in Central Park NYC. that was in the late 70's 80's. The voice was still good ,but only for a short time .
Stefania Toczyska was a great singer
She still is 😊 even being 81 years old. Her voice is still on point.

I am yet to hear a better Amneris than that of Stefania Toczyska ❤❤
The other mezzo I think is comparable is Oralia Dominguez. They’re both SO good.
@toscadonna I definitely will take a look at her. Thank you so much for the recommendation 🫶🏾

Best Amneris i have heard - such a powerful and warm voice with so much love in it

Toczyska is the best.
Great Amneris!! And a great conducting by Tchakarov, untimely passed away, sadly.
Wonderful. She is also superb with Margaret Price in an excellent video of Aida in San Francisco.
Viva Freni. A well crafted lyric soprano who was a perfectionist and who chose her roles VERY carefully. Wonderful
Exactly, she chose her roles carefully and that's the strange here. She sings a role, usually sung by dramatic sopranos, although she was a lyric one.

Абсолютно с вами согласен! Посмотрите полную запись оперы.))) Вроде пока не удалили с ютуба..

This is sensational ! What year was it recorded ?
1987!

Toczysca is / was one of the greatest Amneris . But, since when Zerlina sings Aida ???
Great singers can choose as they like. Freni was a well schooled perfectionist who had a great career. If you listen ,you'll understand
