Good to see that your trouble shooting steps are basically the same as mine, just some differences in the sequencing. A few tips that is not on video:
    1) Clearing the CMOS. Unplug PC, remove the battery, press the power button to drain capacitor will force reload of BIOS. Hate having to RTFM to find jumper location.
    2) Use of onboard video. Onboard video uses system ram so the 1 ram stick must be place in ram slot 1. May have to RTFM to find which is slot 1.

A good tool for troubleshooting is the speaker for beep error codes, if the motherboard is still functional, you can determine and check beeping and look it up what the amount beeps mean. I.E. problem with GPU, RAM or CPU.

Fantastic video, great also for new people coming into computer repairs.
That motherboard seems to use those aluminium Nichicon FP series (solid electrolyte) electrolytic caps so it's unlikely to be those as.they are rated for 50000 hours.
Non FP series electrolytic caps can bulge, a dead giveaway.
Trap for young players - Double check your monitor video input setting as some monitors don't auto detect.
Hot tip - Hook up a speaker to check for beeps & probe the voltage rails using a cheap DMM.
Sometimes power surges kill MBs like these.
Brian, all your content is awesome & extremely useful to both newbies & experienced techs & please keep it up!

I was 50 years old when I took a Desktop Computer course in ‘06-‘08, almost 2 year course. Managed to get through it , along with going for and passing my Microsoft Computer Professional (MCP) course. We studied XP PRO, the dominant OS of the day and in my opinion, still an excellent, stable, secure OS and I learned so much about the in’s and out of Computers( Software, Hardware, Form Factors, MoBo’s, H.D.’s, Cabling( including making our own Cat5 cables:eg.>Crossover, Throughput), and doing Permissions for the Pro edition of XP. Vista was just on the horizon and the class ( about 25-30, young and old, hackers and noobs) wanted to get into the “NEW” Windows OS, which by means of sneak peeks, looked great. But our teacher, I’ll never forget, told us, “ They( Business) will continue to use XP for a very long time past it’s proposed lifetime, no matter what Mr. Gates thinks, this is a very well developed and written OS with very good security”(For the time). 12-13 years later, I have no problem agreeing with his prophecy, enduring the experimental OS’s that Microsoft continues to release to the unsuspecting masses. Sorry, Bill, but after my laptop, running an upgraded Win7-Win10 o.s. , craps out, I’m off to see the Apple bar and order a new system. Good luck 👍

sometimes it can help to get hold of the manual and check the trouble shooting section, back in the day when i 1st started repairing pc's Beepcodes from the internal speaker were helpful, but as things evolved past the 286 and 386 machines that I cut my teeth on the only beeps were to do with memory - 1 thing i learned early on when diagnosing pc's was to disconnect every cable that wasnt absolutely needed , especially the RESET switch and check the position of the CMOS jumper - as a pc can appear dead if its in the wrong position - and as a last resort clear the cmos, but sometimes its worth inspecting the pins on the slots as you never know what can fall in them I have found small whiskers of metal in them before now, and also on some of the chips with tiny exposed pins can be damaged if the card or board has been roughly stored with other cards that have protruding pins , more than one occasion I've had to use a scalpel and a desk magnifier to separate pins of something needed that was chucked in one of the drawers in the shop I used to work in... those were the days...

A bad capacitor(s)? Maybe a bas socket. I paused the video on the motherboard and didn't see any bulging capacitors, but I can't see the whole board plus you can look on the other side to see if there are any scorch marks. Could be a number of things.

@John Phamlore, I used to do hardware level repair many years ago, this video was not about fixing a motherboard, besides its 9 years old, so what's the point? its old junk. My time is worth more than what that motherboard is worth. I see so many people fixing 8 year old laptops lol how much can you charge for a job like that today and make it worth doing for the customer and you? I know how much I would charge for my time and its worth more then that laptop is worth and if you are not being honest and out to make money, then what type of tech are you?

    • @johnathanasiou9284
      @johnathanasiou9284 4 года назад

the cost (especially if you do this work professionally) to repair the motherboard is not economically viable & unless its a very specialised application ie video games or custom OEM hardware which used specific MB configurations then its unlikely a customer will honour an invoice.
Its far cheaper to buy a brand new MB.
If its nostalgic or rare ie Amiga, C64, 1980s style video game board then its viable but it assumes your time is free.
Brian runs a real world business & he made a wise decision!

Random question...Have you dealt with many Microsoft SurfaceBooks (3rd version) ? I got a second hand one, and it seems fine except I notice a subtle odd thing that happens with the screen when turning on. If simply waking up there is a very brief (micro seconds) white flash of screen that happens before the iris recognition screen and its flash happens. When turning on or restarting the screen briefly flashes purple like that of update screen, before the iris recognition screen and flash. I have another week to decide if I want to keep it, and this is the only thing that seems slightly odd. I don't know how significant this could be? Any idea if I should keep it or not based on this...It doesn't bother me as such, but if it's a sign it's a bombshell waiting to go off that's another matter...
