Jim, can you teach us how to care for our tools? Clean and sharpen them? Thank you.
That would be so helpful!
As I drive thru the neighborhood the voice in my head: meatball! meatball!
Thanks for the tip on chasing down the spiky growth on the evergreens!
Thank you for helping us be better gardeners.
Jim, I always pick up something useful. You and Steph are incredible! Thank you for sharing.
Jim - thankyou for the explanation and visual tutorial. You are the best.
to help visibility in the algorithm 😂.
Was I the only person distracted the whole video by how amazing that Rosa's Blush Blueberry looks right now?
Hi Jim. This was a much needed tutorial video. Appreciate the info. Now I can go out in my garden this week & confidently do the same. Thank you thank you thank you. ❤❤❤
A descriptive term/verb? that is now stuck in my brain for life, meatballing.....Thanks!? All kidding aside, it is a perfect term for its purpose. Thanks for another meaningful video!
My environmental hort professor called them meatballs or “Roundy Moundy”😅. Stay away from the meatball unless that’s the look you’re going for!
Thank you for all the garden tips!
I looooove the pruning videos! Thanks!!
AGAIN ANOTHER GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO! ❤
Just had a contractor take our overgrown Burford Hollies back. Some were 20' tall and so overgrown, full of mold and pests. Had to be done!
Thank you for explaining your process for pruning Abelia. I have struggled with keeping mine in check and maintaining that natural look in the past, so this was extremely helpful.
Thank you for sharing! Hoping you will also share when/how you tackle conifers that are trees, particularly in privacy screens. My understanding is that trees like Arborvitae need to be tip pruned to keep them full (or the trees will thin). But is that just the new growth? I would not hesitate to prune a globose shrub, but a tree? That is what I think is most intimidating…
We shear our green giant arborvitea and Carolina Sapphire trees. Not a big haircut though
Super helpful pruning video about - Florida sunshine illicium, Leanne Cleyera and night light chamaecyparis! Thank you. Please also show Dragon Prince Cryptomeria. I have some die back and want to know how hard I can prune them.
I've become a big fan of Abelia . Kaleidoscope was our first Abelia. We've noticed they tend to lose leaves more in the colder weather than our Miss Lemon and Radiance. Not sure if it's related to the limited amount of green in Kaleidoscope's leaves. We've also found out we prefer mixing Kaleidoscope with other Abelias rather than just mass planting Kaleidoscopes together. We have Miss Lemon next to a Kaleidoscope, and we also have Radiance next to a Kaleidoscope. The contrast of the Abelias really stands out in our yard.
Thank you for all the information
Obligatory "the deer munched on my illicium" button here; lol you said and I immediately said "hey!" :)
Very helpful video. Thanks Jim.
Great video, so helpful👍😊
My Florida sunshine illicium does that too! I thought they were in too much shade but maybe they just do that
Nice right in time. Thank you Jim & Steph @horttube
Thx Jim & Steph!
Thank you, can you show birds nest spruce and mugo pines?
Thanks for all tips on gardening!
So helpful. Thank you!
Very helpful.
I was trying to count how many times you said “meatball” 🤣🤣🤣 JK
Thanks for always sharing valuable content 😊
If you didnt trim the abeila which I call Amelia badeila lol would it just catch up with itself with the spikeyness like will it just be bigger eventually? Also any idea where I can get straight species?
Take to make the cuts!!!
Jim, do I need to cut off browning/bronzing or frost burn on my conifers? Can i just leave them and they will green up again? My upright yews get looong leaders and i cut them to get it to thicken but it just grew long leaders again. Should i leave those long leaders on the yews?
Have you heard of "cloud pruning"? Have you tried that method? Do you know any easy topiary forms?
Would now be a good time to drastically prune a cleyera in zone 8A? Would like to take it down about 12”. Thanks for your help!
Great pruning video! Illicium would be such a pretty groundcover. My Rose Creek Abelia need pruning this spring. Do you recommend removing crossing branches on Abelia?
Thank you Jim. ❄️🫠💚🙃
Your shears. What brand are you using? I have 2 pairs of bad shears and need advice.
Jim, am I right that you live on a dead-end street? I just noticed this recently, in a couple of recent videos. I live on one as well.
🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍 yes! I need to do this too!!! Do you need to cut them so they branch out and get bushier? I hate to cut my boxwoods back down but they are just stringy looking lol
Fantastic video, perfectly timed for my Atlanta garden. I’m a 40 year gardener, but pruning still intimidates me. Headed out the door with my pruners and shears. Thx again!
Hello Jim Putnam! We live in Zone 7 Greater Atlanta Area. We planted a host of Japanese Cleyera to become a hedge on the slope of of our large backyard years ago. The tall plants are not doing well and are looking very thin. What do you recommend we do to reverse this such they look thick and vibrant again? Thanks.
By the way, can the pruned Japanese Cleyera cuttings be rooted? If so, how can those cuttings be properly rooted to propagate the plants? Thanks.
...I have a Sunshine ligustrum that almost doubled in size, since planting it last year. [MD, now 7a] I loved its natural wispy look, but I ended up meat-balling it yesterday. Doesn't look too nice/is boring! Fingers crossed new growth'll sprout out, and I do that only once yearly, to keep it in bounds. 🥴🤞🤷🏼♀️👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^=
I do this 2x annually and it more than bounces back.
@@branch7010 (...thanks for the reassurance!...) 🥴🥲👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^=
The deer ate all my leaves off my camellias!!! 😕😕😕😕😕 are they gonna come back out you think? Those stinkers!!!!
Me too! They have even been eating my azaleas. I use “Deerstopper” which works well until rain washes it away.
@@frandavis8687 oh great I need to get some of that!!!! They are awful!!! they ate my roses too omg I hope they don’t get into my azaleas 🌺
When do you use a hedge trimmer?
I have three gas hedge trimmers, but I don't really have a need in this house. The old house had 100 foot lines of things and I used them then.
@@JimPutnam you’re making me feel like a wimp! Lol
SUMMER BLOOMING CAMELLIAS??? 😳😳😳
Jim buddy, I cringed on the nightlight hinoki couldn't have did it. Lmao you plant abuser....as if I'm not. I destroyed my 2 large fernspray hinoki and you explained exactly why I destroyed them with the nightlights neighboring hinoki. Do you think a weeping yaupon holly would make it zone 6A in a sheltered spot. Im growing needle palms and sabal minor in a sheltered spot with no problem. You think their location would be a spot? They say we're now 7A but we're not due to winter winds and desacation. I mentioned my palms for comparison for their cold tolerance and the limits of zone pushing I can do. That said I can't grow a windmill palm which is number 3 in the cold hardy palm groups tolerance.
😂
Can you propagate Florida ilicium from cuttings?
Great content
Hubby and I are on a pruning mission today. This video is perfect!
The vitex tree in the background is screaming at me to be pruned hard like a hydrangea standard would be 😂
When you prune "spiky" branches toward the center of the shrubs, like you did with the Abelia and Camellia Sasanqua, does this also encourage new internal growth that helps the shrubs maintain a full look? I'm guessing some evergreen shrubs will sprout new growth from your pruning cuts and some won't.
For sure!
I want to know what that car is in the driveway. I've searched and searched the net and cannot find it. I love it. Thanks for your video.
Love pruning because it’s a creative art. It makes a major difference in the landscape.
