India Underestimating How Much It's a Global Player

  • Strobe Talbott: India is underestimating the extent to which it is now a global player. It is not just a regional player. There will be a raft of opportunities if American statesmanship is handled properly going forward and if India steps up to the plate and thinks of itself as a major-league world power.

On April 29th, the Asia Society Policy Institute, The India Project at Brookings and McKinsey & Company hosted a discussion examining India's election and the choices that will impact India's political, business, technology, social, cultural and foreign policy spheres and explored the challenges and opportunities facing India outlined in the publication, Reimagining India: Unlocking the Potential of Asia's Next Superpower.

India as a reluctant world power?
Without a doubt, India is a rising global power, whether or not it wants to be one. Historically, India was a leading naval, military, and economic global power. The superhighway that connected India to the rest of the world wasn't blatant military aggression, colonisation or economic piracy, but the softer, more venerable culture, trade, ethics and religion.
Since time immemorial, the roots of Indian civilization rested on ethics and spirituality. India should reclaim that ancient legacy and light the way forward.

We Indians have our own issue of poverty, illiteracy and jobs creation. For example, if we outsource job to every existing European job, we will still need more jobs. We should not start taking sides of powers like USA, Russia which are not reliable allies.
Russia and USA have both been in opposition of One Belt One Road and have changed their stance, undermining Indian interest. Similarly, they forced us to buy less oil from Iran to stop nuclear proliferation, while they have big stocks of weapons to bully the rest.
So, we should focus on creating more jobs in India, making urbanization asap, raising Indian standards. We will face racism, others will say 1/4 or 1/3 Indians are not literate. The Goldman Sachs will not be there to defend us at that time saying a lot of Indians are becoming rich. It's not a lot. Maybe 1/100th are rich enough to even compete with the west. Pool the resources for the betterment of India and its neighbors.

At the micro level they are slum dwellers. Thousands of people live in small cramped rooms, with dirty, bug infested, mattresses and linen, wearing unwashed clothes for days, and cutting each others hair , just because they cannot afford to go to barbers, however walking up nice and clean roads maintained by govt. such a large country yet have so many homeless people, even living in vehicles. social media has opened the pandoras box, please see you tube videos of ' hoarders' and you will se how average people live in western civilisations eg usa

India has always been a major power. Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of Iran was India and it was Buddhist India that ruled. This area was also known as Asia Minor. Under India this area was beautiful, rich and peaceful. It was the Indian Prince "Buddha" who colonized the Orient and also the Indo Pacific. India was a non-violent empire. All the teachers of all the faiths are from Asia and it is India that is related to all. The primitive thinking British came in as friends and left India broke, uneducated, and her lands, power divided before India claimed her independence and the "Sun was Set" . If Britain had come in as "true" friends they would still be ruling the world. India has never been conquered. Egotistic primitive invaders and African slaves brought into Asia as hurt but India is still strong. The outside major powers are all about "Power and Greed" that is not India and never should be. India's strength in relations should be inventions, mathematics, sciences. Internally India needs to controlling it's population and getting everyone in India educated. Learn the good things from all the other major power to improve life for the average citizen. India needs to concentrate on it's space program and finding ways to get rid of oil, change ocean water into drinking water and be more business savvy in her inventions. Internally India needs to make India beautiful again, beautiful, clean cities that inspire, make the oceans, skies blue again. India needs to love her children, women with Law and Order. China, Russia have the death penalty for anyone dealing in drugs, India should do the same. 90% of Chinese women know how to play classical piano, India should do the same because it would give something in common with the 50+ European countries that as a global country India needs to do business with. The civilization that understands India will be the first empire since 5000+ years ago to take mankind into the next step in human evolution.

    How does one rate India?
I heard & read this in Astronomy. At the event hirizon of a black hole, a person's body gets stretched (to infinity, even) so the feet stretch towards the ground or black body, while the head remains high above in the sky.
India is somewhat in that state. On per capita GDP basis it is a poor country (where a $ goes a long way to feed a poor person in a poorer area for the day), with its statistics aspiring to be a middle income country. India's detractors love to display this part of India's statistics. It is so while India's GDP-PPP (PPP alone matters) is in third place. India ìs a land of extreme contrasts, unlike other country - with both extremes lying side by side. Añy other country can be categorised as rich or poor, intelligent or dumb, peaceful or violent, law abiding or not. India isn't a Commumist country where the population can be steamrolled to fit into one category. Communists in India do participate & get elected in two states to form governments and next time yielding place to extreme right kind of capitalism. In a couple of years India is going to be world's most populous (No.1) country, with 17% of global population. South Asia (India+ Pakistan+ Bangladesh of the erstwhile British-Indian empire) has now about 1.8 billion people as against 1.4 billion in PRC.

USA has been world police to large extent but they had vested home interest. What is wrong if india's too concentrates on issues of food, clothing, shelter, education and health care for its citizen than international politics. Is it not the duty of a country to target this issues than be major player in the world.

India though very strong today if attacked, still has a subservient mentality and therefore culturally too timid to be a world leader underestimating its own ability and always "bowing " when it comes to eminent confrontation militarily or economically. A sleeping giant that prefers sleeping a bit like the giant sleeping Buddha statues you see in Asia.
